Cold food, such slow service.. Will not be returning. We went to San Carlo on Saturday night to celebrate myself and my partner being pregnant with our first baby. San carlo is where we had our very first date a couple of years ago so we were excited to go there again. We left so disappointed due to the lack of service they delivered. We arrived for our table at 9:15, and had to stand at a busy bar next to loads of dirty glasses. Being pregnant and having to stand for long isn't ideal especially in a small confined space with waiters barging past. We were there for about 20 minutes and then taken to our table. Our drinks order was taken and we had asked for some water as being pregnant I get very dehydrated, and then about 15 minutes later the same waiter came to take our drinks order again? We said we had already ordered but please can we get some water. another 20 minutes went by and no water, so my partner had to get up and go to the bar to ask for water. Finally another 10 minutes later we had everything we ordered. We then waited for ages for our food order to be taken, and even longer for it to arrive - which when it did, it was cold. We complained about the food and they took that off of the bill which was very kind. We then made our dessert order with a waiter who we hadn't spoken to before. 30 minutes later it still hadn't arrived. Another waiter came to us with the menus and we had expressed that we have already made the order, he then found out that our first order was never even processed. They gave us our dessert also on the house which again was a kind gesture. But overall the experience was awful, and I won't be going again due to the lack of care. 3 other tables around us had also put in complaints, as their food was cold and there were waiters shouting at them.

We had booked a table for 2 at San Carlo for our wedding anniversary, not even sure why they ask at the time of the booking what’s the occasion as no one there really cares. The atmosphere was dire with frustrated guests clearly not being looked after, the restaurant had about 12 front of staff on the night serving not many tables, still service was lacking. It took ages to get our order, the wine was very mediocre for the price, the food very average. We had a charcuterie to share to start and it was worse than what you might get from budget off license, nothing was remotely close to what Italian charcuterie should be. And again - service poor, for the establishment that calls themselves fine dining, there was dining, but it surely wasn’t fine. The ladies toilets were absolutely filthy, toilet paper everywhere, urine all over the floors, it stank and no soap, but a bunch of empty soap bottles all over the basin counters.. It was quite shocking. I the. Gents were the same from what my husband later told me. When the bill arrived we refused to pay service charge and complained about the service and food quality, we were given 10% off and service charge was removed. I don’t really think we were listened to when we complained and were given that discount just to go away, it felt like they have been dealing with complaints that way other than actually improve. Won’t be coming back.

We've dined here before and it was spectacular. Unfortunately tonight I was disappointed. In their defense it was a busy Saturday night, we booked in advance and had a wonderfully placed table front of house. Unfortunately the previous guests at our table had left gum on my partner's chair which wasn't noticed. Staff were helpful with my partner cleaning it off his trousers, providing a brush for him to scrub it off with and replacing his chair. But it was a shame it was missed in the first place. We ordered the mussels in white wine, cream and garlic sauce to start. It was far over-salted! But we didn't complain. My partner ordered spicy Italian sausage and penne pasta main. I had a mouthful and it was also insanely salty! I ordered the scallop and pea risotto main, which was overpriced considering it came with just two scallops. You can pick up 6 large, juicy and fresh scallops for just £5 from most fishmongers in the city! When I mentioned it to the waitress, and of course said that it wasn't her fault, she said that I must've ordered the dish as a starter as the main comes with 3 scallops. This would still be measly, but is also untrue as photos posted with Google reviews show the same MAIN DISH with just two scallops. Disappointed tonight. We've had perfectly seasoned, liberally served dishes here before. Perhaps they had a different chef, or have cut back with food/lease increases?

Summary: Good service, somewhat classy decoration but food was just ok Service: Warm welcome. We had a reservation and were quickly shown to our tables. The waiters were very friendly and attentive. Got the bill fairly quickly when I asked for it, which was a nice change compared to other restaurants that take 20+ min. Overall very happy with the service. Food: The mushroom risotto was of good portion but it was too bland and it felt very watery instead of creamy so I would avoid it. We got a pizza to share and it was pretty good, I really liked the dough, it felt premium and not cheap like other restaurants. The ravioli was average and to be honest kinda expensive (around 18 pounds for 5 large ravioli). This was the large portion of ravioli which was meant to be a main dish, I assume the smaller one (11 pounds if I recall correctly) will probably have 2-3 raviolis only. That's just ridiculous. Taste wise they were just fine, a little hard on the bite but not really an issue, just personal preference. Room: Overall it's a nice place, definetely a good place for a date, nice furniture etc.. However, tables are somewhat tightly arranged and the noice level in the restaurant was above average. It wasn't even full that day, I'd imagine it gets unbearably loud on a full night. I noticed the same in the San Carlo restaurant in Manchester.

As soon as we walked into this shiny Italian wannabe posh restaurant following a beautiful walk by Saint Nicholas market we couldn't comprehend the awful attitude of the manager/ waiting staff . They looked at us in a strange manner, as if the restaurant was fully booked when the place was half full and curtly asked us if we had a reservation. Our elderly guest was being harassed by the staff in a condescending way to take his plate while he was still having his soup as if they were ready to serve our main courses. But no, that was another 45 minute wait. Also worth mentioning that they look at you as if you are undeserving of their meals for not ordering wine , apparently not sophisticated enough to dine with them otherwise. We had to clear that up by mentioning we were travelling and didn't want any alcohol. This patronizing , and very condescending attitude taught to the waiters is uncalled for. In general the place is pretty, but the attitude of the staff put a big damper on the joy of eating their delicious food. But was it worth waiting that long? Absolutely NO!! A well travelled visiting Family from Amman -Jordan like us have definitely had better experiences in other cities.

I’ve been here twice in the past months, one table of 9 and one of 5. Both times it took a blood boiling amount of time to receive menus, drink orders, and then eventually food orders. The wait time for the food was RIDICULOUS on both occasions, taking almost 45 mins for the larger table. One starter was missing which was a soup and took another 10 mins to arrive. There was then another long wait for mains, as well as dessert orders. The price you pay, you expect great service in a timely manner, or at least a heads up on wait times (although one of the visits was during lunch and half the restaurant was empty). Furthermore, the table of 9 was booked online and they tried to tell us the table had been adjusted to 5 and someone had called from the phone number on the booking which was an outright lie The table was for a special occasion, and we ended up squished onto two round tables pushed together which made us difficult to converse. The whole experience on both occasions took up to 3.5 hours and was exhausting. I don’t plan on returning, and would prefer paying the same amount for a place that values the customer experience.

We have mixed feelings about San Carlo. Even though the interior is nice and most of the waiters were really polite (especially Tom), it took them over 20mins to sit us at our table, even though we had a reservation. They seemed lost as to which our table was, they paid no attention to us and we had to remind them that we’re standing there waiting, and they asked what the reservation name was, 3 times, even though we could see it on their list with a table number assigned. The food then didn’t arrive for almost an hour and by that point it was almost 10pm and we were tired and hungry. We then found a hair in the fried zucchini which was the tip of the iceberg as not only - even though the waiters apologised - they CHARGED US for the dish with the hair in it and none of the managers came over to address the issue or apologise or at least take it off the bill. We will not be returning unfortunately as last time we came we waited over 1.5 hours for food and it’s just not worth it - seems like it’s not just a one-off…

As I sit here waiting for 10 minutes to pay the bill. The good, Pasta was delicious, however not very hot. Probably the cold plate it was served on. The bad, Tricolore salad was soft and over ripe for both the Tomatoes and the Avocado making a very slimy dish. I was surprised upon returning a full plate of food not one question as to if the food was ok. In fact I’m yet to be asked how any of my meal was. The ugly, well the very nice but really not very good waiting staff tried to take food whilst it was still being eaten. Waiters do not step aside to allow a guest to walk through the restaurant. Oh no you get bulldozed. Lastly, the floor towards the gents toilets looks like it’s not seen a mop for a few days. The gents toilets themselves are absolutely disgusting. Water and urine everywhere. Not a pleasant experience. Shame as the other restaurants in the chain have been a delight. Not in Bristol. For those still reading, not paid yet. Oh well ‍♂️

We were in Bristol attending a ceremony at the registry office and we decided to have lunch beforehand as we couldn't stay after the ceremony and happened to notice San Carlo so in we went ! From entering to leaving we couldn't fault it . We opted for the lunchtime special menu and we weren't disappointed. Lovely table, buzzing atmosphere and great service and not forgetting the superb food . We started with avocado, tomato and mozzarella salad and a minestrone and both were delicious and full of flavour . Next we had a margherita pizza and a pollo milanese and again delicious . Then we followed with 2 cappucinos. Service cannot fault, politeness cannot fault, friendliness cannot fault, food cannot fault, cleanliness cannot fault so we'll definitely go back again next time we're in Bristol and we visit regularly . Thank you all at San Carlo

Amazing place, food and atmosphere. We had our anniversary dinner at San Carlo in Bristol and the food and service was amazing. Food arrived quickly. Only my daughter starter which was mozzarella between two pieces of bread which i think was deep fried and was soaked in oil, the main taste was the oil, plus when my partner booked the table he have included in the form we are going to have anniversary and was hoping for something but it looks like they don’t really red the info that comes with the booking request which was s bit disappointing as surely if there is a space to incl such an information they should read it and act accordingly. Apart from that everything was great.

Lovely restaurant, tucked away in central Bristol. We ate here for a birthday meal and enjoyed the experience. I would definitely return. Pros We both enjoyed our food. I had sea bass and my husband had the four seasons pizza. Wonderful atmosphere, from the background music to the mirrored walls and lighting. It was a really classy experience. Waiting staff were very professional and attentive. Prices seemed very reasonable considering the quality of the food. Could improve There were no olives at all on the menu in any form and we love olives so were disappointed. There was no veg at all accompanying the fish on the specials menu, which is fine if there had been a good selection of side dishes. I didn't feel there was much choice though: spinach or beans and that was it. Not many vegetarian options and even then they were not labelled as such for easy reference. On balance we enjoyed our meal and would return.

Went for my birthday, when going to other places you'll be made to feel special or at least get a 'happy birthday' from staff. Despite mentioning it in the reservation we got neither this nor a particularly nice table. That being said food was great, with almost to quick table service and only the dessert falling slightly under expectations. My monkfish pasta was delicate and delicious, with a great spicy brushetta to start. All desserts seemed pre-prepared and didn't even come from the kitchen so I would only have two courses in the future. Overall would recommend but not for a special occasion, staff are blunt and my personal feeling was of a restaurant that felt like you were privallaged to be there. Sometimes you click with a place and for me it seemed to lack a bit of personality and friendliness but I'm sure for some this is a great place to go for a meal! Just don't expect service with a smile...

Amazing food. Visited San Carlo while on a trip to Bristol. I had booked ahead online for a Monday evening around 1900, it was very busy for weekday but our table was set and ready for us as soon as we arrived. There is a brilliant atmosphere San Carlos and the decor is good. My order was taken promptly and there is an extensive wine list that we ordered from. The food and wine were fantastic and tasted delicious, the bruschetta was particularly fresh and delicious. There is a massive choice of Italian food including pizzas on the menu. The desert menu is not massive but I sampled them all and they were all delicious. The staff initially were brilliant and very attentive to customers, when the restaurant got busy a few tables had trouble ordering a desert and getting the bill and paying. I will definitely recommend here for an Italian meal and will visit again when I go to Bristol again.

  • Lucia

Very expensive for poor service and alright food. We started with a fried fish platter which came fairly quickly and was delicious. However, it went down from here. We then waited 1hr 45 minutes from finishing our starter to receive our main! We asked the waiter how long it would be and he informed 5 minutes which then the food came. I had the chilli prawn spaghetti and whilst the prawns were very nice and quite large, the tomato sauce was quite runny underneath all the spaghetti. The drinks were nice and the food was okay but for the service I don’t think I would be coming back here. If you enjoy to be at a restaurant for a while and enjoy to talk between courses then you might not mind the wait.

We were taken to the table, we had to wait for a friend, but we weren't offered a drink, we had to ask. When our friend arrived we had to wait for ages until we were able to get someone's attention. Our food came and then no one came to check if we needed anything else, more drinks, if we were happy with our food or to offer us a dessert. We had to wait for the bill and then the waiter was getting ratty with us because we wanted to split our bill. There were a lot of staff, so no excuse there. The toilets definitely didn't match the deco in the restaurant and they were dirty and the floor was wet with body fluids. The food was Ok, but there are many Italian family run restaurants which are much better. We are not going to be back.

Been one of our favourite restaurants since moved to Bristol in 2019 - not sure if tonight was a miss but won’t be going back. Calamari starter was colourless like it hadn’t been cooked - the pizzas were shocking and then £5 for 4 pieces of pepperoni added to the pizza - the dessert was good thou. Best part of the meal was the bottle of Coca Cola. The worst part the bill came and had an extra 6 items on it totalling an extra £90 which we got removed but took bout 5 minutes to get this done when we just wanted to leave. The staff are alright. After raving about this place for years it feels so sad it’s slipped and looking at the other reviews recently it might not be a one off - it’s a shame as tonight spoiled this restaurant

We were recommended this restaurant by a member of our family but sadly it didn't quite hit the mark. My main meal had plenty going for it such as it was cooked well, ingredients were nice and tasty, presented well but it was only warm. I informed the waiter who just looked at me, i repeated that my meal is not hot and again he just looked at me!!! Later he asked my wife what she would like for dessert and although it was a fairly loud atmosphere i clearly heard her reply but he didn't so i had to raise my voice!!! Overall i expected so much more than the lovely building and decor and would love to give it a higher mark but sadly not on this occasion plus we are due back in a couple of months for a family birthday but not sure i would return in a hurry as service certainly didn't live up to the meal prices.

Service is very poor and they still have the nerve to add a 10% service charge. We only a table of four and we had to ask 3 different staff for our pepper sauces and English mustard which they brought out french mustard first. By this time our meals were cold. We ordered our second drinks whilst we ordered our meals and they were not ordered. Our drinks waiter served us up to the point of our starter came out, then we didn't see him again. We were told by one of their staff there are 5 managers and yet all 5 walk around empty handed and still can't get it right. I think in total we had 8 different people serve us which must be a world record. The bill came to nearly £300 for four people. Just wish I noticed the service charge of £26 before paying....... I definitely would not of paid it !!!

Pretty interior. Friendly staffs (except for the manager). Food was below expectations. Painfully slow service. Wanted to order a cake for my friend’s birthday but was told we’d be given a tiramisu on the house. But we got one scoop of gelato with a small candle. Was not complaining then considering they’re giving it for free but was still disappointed bc no cake on a birthday celebration? We ordered another cup of three scoops of gelato but was charged twice for that. Only realized after we left. For a decent restaurant, this was a disappointment. The one star is for the lovely waiter who offered to take photos for us.

  • Kate West

Very disappointed, service abysmal. Table booked for 5 people at 20.00hrs few months ago, 25 minute wait for table. Eventually ordered starters with 3 of us having a starter which included prawns, to be told 18 minutes later no prawns left. Long wait for main courses, 3 of which had to go back as food cold. I make better Lasagne than was dished up. Lots of other diners complaining of how long it took for food to arrive. Only paid 50% of bill. Will never return and would certainly not recommend.

We visited for a birthday dinner for an 8pm booking. By 10pm we STILL hadn’t received our main courses. Asked 3 members of staff where our food was and no one came back to us with an answer. Tables around us were all similar but no apologies. Extremely poor service. No indication or notice there was a wait, everyone simply left with no food and no apologies either. We eventually left with no main courses and went to a local for dinner that was still serving which was MUCH better. Don’t waste your money on poor service

Quality food but not for anyone with an appetite. Attentive service but did start to clear main course whilst table still eating. We dined 1930-2100hrs on a Saturday - popular and sadly, no management of large group bookings which made for a very noisy restaurant, loud tables, and family literally shouting at each other to be heard which didn’t make for the relaxing, special dining experience we had hoped for.

Communication from staff was poor and when the food finally arrived, my boyfriends chicken was raw, pasta wasn’t cooked, almost as if they’d forgotten our order. Even though we did get some money off, the night was kind of ruined already. Would not recommend especially for the amount of money you are paying!

San Carlo Bristol is a lavish Italian venue for diners who appreciate fine dining. Only a 5 minute walk from the Bristol Hippodrome, San Carlo Bristol is also the idea food spot for those looking to enjoy an evening of dinner and theatre. Starters and anti-pasties were genuine Italian pleasures. Fish dishes were fine not great. So Italian classics would be ideal to choose next time.

Atmosphere was nice, and the food was above average. The staff were also nice. Unfortunately, the food was horrendously slow to arrive, and some of the sides had been forgotten until prompted. Yes I was in a sizable group, but the restaurant was far from busy, given that it was a Tuesday night. I'm sure it would be a much better experience in a smaller group.

Antipasti were great. Tuna tartare was simple yet seasoned with just right amount of salt, and Mozzarella in bread was just so tasty. However the mains weren't unfortunately as good as antipasti. Spaghetti alle vongole had way too much oil in. I had to wipe my lips at every bite and I was almost disgusted by how much oil was left on the plate after. Service was prompt. Due to a let down by mains, I would say 3.5 stars to be exact.

Have been here many times over the years as the food and service are so good and my expectations were met again! I had crab and lobster cocktail then the fish soup starter which were both enough for me and tasted delicious! My friends shared a mozarella and prosciutto starter with garlic bread followed by veal in breadcrumbs and parmigiana which they both enjoyed. None of us had room for dessert! I will go again!

The food was absolutely brilliant until we found a black hair in the pasta but the customer service was very poor, had to go to the bar and get my own drink as staff more interested in a table full of girls. I remember coming to this restaurant two years ago and the service was excellent and the food was perfect! But since then clearly all this has changed.

Definitely the worst dining-out experience I’ve ever had. We had a booking for 6 people to celebrate my brother’s 30th birthday. From the outset, we felt very unwelcome and even ignored by the staff. After a wait of at least 30 minutes, we

Wow what a difference a pandemic/ brexit can cause to a 'fine dining' - restaurant business. Visited recently and was rather underwhelmed by the experience, in comparison to previous visits. On arrival our booking was questioned, our coats

Used to love this place, gone very downhill while the prices have sky rocketed. Sat down at 5:45, not very busy, food arrived at the table at 7:45. Food was pretty average. Staff didn’t seem to care that much, customer service used to be

The restaurant provides special lunch set which is amazing, 3 courses only costs £19.50 with fine dining high quality and service. This is one of the restaurants under San Carlo group, I visited Fumo in London which is very good, too.

Awesome food and service. Only slight issues was that the mussels in the seafood platter were slightly gritty not having been rinsed thoroughly. Otherwise an amazing experience.

We are using the lunch special which runs until 4pm. Excellent mozzerella starter. Mains were small, so might be worth adding sides to this if you want a little more. Primitivo wine was excellent. Service was great.

Excellent decor. Good food. But with bad services that ruin your dining experience.
