Edit: this was our long term vet care, but I can no longer recommend this practice. You can see my original review below. Over time it got harder and harder to be seen in a timely manner, which I understand. Busy practice. I’m a nurse and worked at a pediatric office for 7 years- I understand how medical offices run. My kitty was coming to the end- she had been sick a long time. So I made an appointment on Saturday to say goodbye. I was off on my timing by a day. On Friday morning, she was suffering, I called as the office opened hoping to be seen but was refused. I begged. He was so cold about it- “Go to the ER.” No compassion. No help. He did not even offer a phone number, or the name of where I should go. I started calling home euthanasia places but no one was available. I finally took her to a pet ER in the Sunset. She was so sick they would not allow me in the room with her. She died frightened with strangers. And the icing on the cake? On the car ride home with my empty carrier, SF Pet Hospital called. Their schedule was super light and would I like to move my Saturday appointment to this afternoon? If you value your pet- don’t go here. They will take thousands of dollars, break your heart, and your dog or kitty will suffer. Two stars. I would give one star but as a courtesy to the wonderful care I received before the practice changed hands, I will leave two. Photo of my Molly- who deserved love and compassion (and so did I). Original review: I have been coming to SF Pet Hospital since we moved to the neighborhood 17 years ago. 5 furr babies later (4 cats, and a senior dog)- having gone through emergency needs, chronic illness, end of life care, and everything in between I can say this practice is the very best.

I was prompted by my vet that my cat (3.5 yrs.old) was due for her annual physical. Flash forward to the appointment day/time. I took the time off from work I would need. Scooped the cat up, contained her in her carrier, drove to the vet, found parking, etc. The actuall "annual wellness check" consisted of the Vet, or Vet Tech, simply weighing her, then saying, "she looks healthy." Bill for a 5 min. "wellness check": $85 I wrote them once I was back home and had received their emailed bill, advising of my experience, stating I meant no disrespect, but really felt that if that was all they were going to do for an annual visit, I would prefer they only contact me when/if she needs a vaccination or booster. I received a "flat" reply that I would be notified - but there was no reference to my compliant, nor was the email signed. I responded to that email advising I would not be returning there with my cat, and requested my cat's medical records - which I must say, were sent promptly. Again there was no acknowledgement of my complaint. No apology. No concern that I was dissatisfied with the care my pet had received. I've been going to this vet hospital for 25 years, but management and staff have changed in the past 3-4 years. Historically, annual visits consisted of weighing, checking her heart, checking eyes, ears, feeling her abdomen, and lifting her tail for a look at her "hindquarters", taking her temp., etc. I've since spoken with multiple other vets, as well a the SPCA and was able to confirm they did not do the job they were paid for.

I am a first-time puppy mom and was happy to learn there was a vet in my neighborhood that I could walk to. That was my only criteria in choosing the vet, but I'm so glad it ended up being this place. My primary vet has been Dr. Leyba. When I first met him, I was amazed at how much time he spent talking to me not only about my puppy's health, but also about puppy raising in general and my anxieties and stressors with this all being new to me. Not only was the doctor amazing, but every staff member I have encountered at SF pet hospital has been warm, open, kind, and attentive to my dog's needs. My dog actually enjoys going to the vet and gets excited when he sees the staff that come out to get him (and give him treats). My puppy has been having a lot of stomach issues, so in his short life so far, I have talked to the vet quite frequently. They are always available by call or email and have a really quick response time. No question is deemed "stupid" by them, even when my dad was convinced that my dog had pooped out a living slug and had me send a picture to the vet asking what could be wrong with him for him to poop out a slug (which is not possible), they kindly explained in detail how it is not possible and reassured me my dog is fine. I tell everyone I encounter what a great vet I have, and I am so thankful to have come across Sf Pet Hospital. Thank you to everyone there! Desmond and I appreciate you!

If you're looking for a professional and compassionate vet, look no further. Last Saturday, my rat was very ill and we needed medical attention ASAP. We knew she was sick and had taken her to a vet earlier in the week but things had taken a turn for the worst. We knew that we would have to put her down to save her from suffering. I spent nearly 2 hours calling vets in the bay area to find anyone that could help and everyone said they were booked or that they couldn't help. Then I found San Francisco Pet Hospital. The receptionist went above and beyond for us and explained out situation to the doctor. Keep in mind that they do not take rats as patients and yet they still offered to help. The doctor also had rats as pets and understood what we were going through and was extremely knowledgably. It was very difficult to say goodbye to Ghoul (our rat) but the compassion they showed and willingness to help was just incredible. I can not put into words how grateful I was for their help. So if you're looking for a vet for your fur baby, this is the place.

All of that staff are so kind and empathetic especially to a first time puppy father like myself. No concern is too small, and you treat my not-so-little-little boy like he’s your own. I had an incident over the weekend where my puppy received a very unique injury in his jaw, and the 2 24-hour pet hospitals in the area wouldn’t even take him inside to take a look, saying it was just his baby teeth and not a problem. SF pet hospital worked with me to get my GSD puppy in and examined when they opened, gave me options, and their insights as if my puppy was their own, and were able to treat him same day. I’ve only been using them for a month, but from the interactions I’ve had with places in SF since bringing home my puppy, they have already won my loyalty! Please don’t change and continue to be good empathetic people looking out for the best interests of the pets and their parents!

My cat Pickles is now healthy and happy due to the care that she receives here. She had severe stomach issues for years and none of her previous vets offered an explanation but were happy to run expensive tests and treat her symptoms with expensive medications. Within five minutes of our first appt at SF Pet Hospital the doctor asked if she ever was diagnosed with IBS and of course I said no. The vet gave us some meds and Pickles has been healthy and stable ever since. She’s even gained all her weight back! I’m very happy with the care my cat has received here and would highly recommend them to any pet owner.

Dr. Villard is a wonderful veterinarian he's knowledgeable, and provided clear guidance.. Dr. Villard was extremely accommodating and supportive of me and my Foxy. My baby is like my child...I felt so worried and he made me feel comfortable in a highly stressful situation, also my Foxy has a history of seizures brought on with any anxiety or noises, she too felt comfortable in his hands. I feel very lucky to have Dr. Villard as my doctor for Foxy. He's been my veterinarian since 2009 and has always treated my Foxy with great care. Thank you The front desk also was very professional and helpful.

Lee and the entire staff have cared for my cats and now Wilbur for over 30 years! I am incredibly grateful for the great care my pets have gotten. I seriously have a long list of the way you have made a difference in the quality of our pet's lives that wouldn't fit in this space. Our family gets so much joy from having and loving our pets. Your staff has helped to make that possible. So to answer your question, veterinary care just doesn't get better than this! Thank you so much for all you have done. With gratitude, Janaki Tompkins

I can't recommend this place enough! My kitten got great care, and as her owner I really felt the vet listened and responded very thoughtfully to all of my concerns for her health, which put a lot of my anxiety as a new cat-mom at ease. They even helped me get an earlier apt after I explained her condition to the doc. They put me on a cancellation list and I was called within the hour for an apt weeks earlier! I feel I got very lucky, but it also speaks to the level of care and commitment they have for animals.

I had a little flea emergency and was able to make an appointment online within 3 days. I arrived 20 minutes early and was promptly seen. The vet was informative, practical, understanding and efficient. The rest of the personnel was kind, welcoming and on top of it. My very first appointment took a total of 45 minutes and only cost $210 for a heartworm test, visit fee, flea prescription and two vaccines. I’m very grateful and impressed with my experience. Thanks to the team at SF Pet Hospital.

We have been very happy customers of SF Pet Hospital for over 5 years with our two dogs. Friendly staff, great care for both animals and the humans that bring them in. Appointments are usually available a week or two out and they are prompt to get you checked in and out the door with all things taken care of in a timely manner...I appreciate that they are respectful of everyone’s time. Could not recommend more highly. Even our dog rushes to get in the door when we turn the corner of the block.

Their fees are unreasonably high, but the quality of service isn't on par with what was like years ago. A huge lack of care, communication, standard protocol and professionalism from my latest experience with Dr. Geldert and some of the staff. Furthermore, I'm extremely disgusted by Dr. Geldert’s unethical conduct to put all the blame on the pet and owner by adding defensive, false statements in the clinical summary a day after I posted my online reviews about her.

Dr. Hunter is always so compassionate, knowledgeable, creative, and genuinely cares about the pets and their humans. She also provided a warm hand off with Dr. Hancock to prepare for next steps for our sick cat as she was out of the office the following day. Dr. Hunter called the next day followed up on care, gave recommendations, and we had new medicines that night. I'm beyond grateful for her and the team! I have will continue to recommend them to everyone.

San Francisco Pet Hospital is a long-standing SF institution built on love and professionalism. I have trusted them with my puppy, my chimix with complicated health issues, my cat who always has weird cat behavior, and my other cat who has other, different weird cat behaviors. Dr. Leyba and the whole crew at are always happy to see us, figure out the latest enigma, and sort out all the little details that add up to the best care for our pets.

The SF Pet Hospital team is amazing. We rescued our sweet pup, so this was our first time bringing her in. Dr. Hunter took to time to (patiently) answer my long list of questions. When I had billing questions, Jeannie, was there to help and was so great to talk to. I am grateful for this team and am so excited to have found a reliable, down to earth team to help care for our sweet gal!

Everyone is so friendly and helpful. I know vet offices are so stressful and busy and I really appreciate everyone’s care so much. I appreciate the thoughtfulness about which exams are necessary at this point in my cat’s life/health status. Some vets seem to want to do every test under the sun and it can feel like a cash grab which has not been my experience at SF Pet Hospital.

  • MacKenzie Sewell

Excellent service! My kitten needed a vaccine and ended up having a reaction to it. I was told to bring her in right away and when I brought her home 30 minutes later she was back to her usual energetic self! The staff were all very kind and caring and I am so glad that they were the ones looking after my sweet kitten! Very excited to be a continuing customer!

I tried a few vets when I first got my dog and none were honest and just wanted to do things that were not necessary to get more income.. But when I tried SF Pet Hospital and met Dr. Leyba he was fair , reasonable and cared about addressing the issues that my dog had without inflating the visit cost. And the staff are very helpful and friendly too!

Probably the worst experience with a vet clinic I have ever had. I travel often with my pet and after paying over $400 for a health certificate at San Francisco pet clinic, they couldn’t get it right. They never apologized for messing up 4 times (that’s right, way too many times) and on top of that, they seemed annoyed to have to keep trying.

  • Nayely

I'm so glad I brought my old pup to SF Pet Hospital. Dr. Nordberg answered all my questions, explained the test results thoroughly, and genuinely wanted to find the best medication to improve my dog's quality of life. I didn't feel like just another number for her which was very refreshing. Would definitely recommend them.

SF Pet Hospital is the best vet in the city for sure. We've been taking our pup there for 6+ years and last year we decided to try a new vet that was much closer to our home. Big mistake. They didn't come close to the level of care, attention to detail, and thoughtfulness. We're SF Pet Hospital lifers now. <3

We've had our furry-faced family members seen here for years. Over good times and bad times, the doctors, vet techs and staff all provide outstanding service. Using a winning combination of skill, compassion and great communication, we feel lucky to have this hospital in our neighborhood.

  • Alice Lin

Amazing vet and office staff! SF Pet Hospital is so accommodating to our reactive dog - he get's the special "horse" exam room. Dr. Jas is awesome - he is the foxtail whisperer. Thank you all for the kindness and compassion!

  • Nicolas Peterson

Dr. Villard gave our pug a clean bill of health. He gave us tips on how to manage his behavioral quirks. Office staff was super friendly. Easy to get to from anywhere in the city via public transit. Now our go-to vet.

  • Maggie Gindlesperger

Everything was perfect! The front desk was wonderful. Dr. Hancock was incredible. He took the time to walk us through all of the information about our new puppy. We feel so lucky to have found SF Pet Hospital!

  • Brian Kemler

Super positive, friendly and helpful experience. Great care - they love animals and treated our baby Tiko like he was their own! Caitlin and Kelly were amazing care givers and a pleasure to work with.

  • Ash Campo

Love this place! The staff is always super nice, we bring our two cats here and do their yearly checkup in an hour or less. They've always been up front with pricing, sending us estimates in advance.

  • Conor Schmitt

We love taking our pets here, all of the doctors and staff take such an amazing interest in our pets. Without a doubt the best veterinarians we’ve ever seen!

  • Joshua Grossman

Best vet experience of my life. Easy to access, kind staff, and clean rooms. I'll be coming here with my old cat for veterinary care as long as live nearby.
