I will post a review of my experience applying for the police officer position. The beginning process of applying was very smooth and informative from the recruiter. I was an out of state applicant and speak Vietnamese. I figure I may have a shot at this dream that I did not pursue in my 20's and now in my late 40's. I have never done drugs and have a 820 fico score and own a home with maybe 4 speeding tickets in my life. After flying 2 times there and rent a hotel and food I spent over 1200$ and pass every test from physical to polygraph to the written exam. I keep on asking the HR recruiter do I have a good shot because I don't want to waste all that time and money. He says yes and even said you are in when I told him the investigator said he will fly down to see me ....but to my disappointment I got the bad news 1 month after that I was not selected. The investigator flew from CA to interview my wife..former managers...etc...I probably had a few bad reviews from a manager or coworkers who did not like me since I was in sales. It took me a little over 2 months to write this since I am no longer pursuing law enforcement. I took 1 year off to pursue this dream by getting in shape and working part time while I interview but found that when you are over 40 it is hard to be hired. They are looking for people in the 20's. I now have a job that I can make 6 figures with a good salary and on the side I am a realtor and loan officer. I just want to advise people who are going into law enforcement to apply locally because it is expensive to apply out of state and get rejected all in a long process with no guarantees. Everything happens for a reason and I now am happy that I put that dream behind me and look forward to a future where I can make a very good living and feel good helping others.

Not surprised at all by the low rating of this department. I called today to report a burglary in my house after waiting 35 minutes for someone to pick up the phone officer Joanna (badge 1089) picks up and speaks to me in an annoyed and condescending manner. She claimed my 1,200$ golf set that I was trying to report stolen was just "maybe lost" and I misplaced it. what? when I told her I have video footage of my residence and need police to come check it out and make a report she said...yea I will tell the officers....without taking my name or information and almost hung up on me. She was not being helpful or trying to solve my issue so I asked to speak to a supervisor or another public servant that can help me. She gave me a long sigh and claimed they would tell me the same thing. She also claimed that me the victim had to work out everything on my own and a officer could not be dispatched to make a report because I didn't know who was the person that stole my golf clubs. She said it is my own personal responsibility to solve the issue because I cant describe the suspect. This "officer" is not fit to pick up phones at a call center let alone a police department. I even left work and went home to have a officer sent to my house to make a report which was her suggestion. I left work and called from my home and I was waiting on hold for over an hour. I have a feeling that Joanna 1089 was just sitting there letting the phone ring. Her tone and conduct was completely unprofessional. She was acting like I was inconveniencing her morning because my house was entered and things were stolen. She needs to be retrained immediately. Your department should be embarrassed.

I have some experiences sjpd in the nearly 30 years but haven't really felt they always did a good job. My worst experience was when a family member stole my stuff and they never asked her to return my property even tho they talk to her and she admitted to hiding it. Back then I didn't know I could just ask for badge numbers and file a complaint but I doubt it would have mattered. When you call them in certain area they will not show for many hours . One time I had a good experience with them because the did they job but it was then. I realised why the police do have such a hard job... and the political aspects urban sprawl are mostly to blame for that however if they city knows the police can do better and this has been this way for years somone on change of how the police are supose to do there job and who they hire are to blame. They don't pay the officers enouhh 1st off or give the department the right resources to do the job effectively. So I gave them 2 stars to be fair. It not my way to just complain but the citizens have the get more involved politically if they want the law to be what it's expect to be and sadly that's not the case. If the citizen of the city and state cared more about the job the police do and justice it would be better .many making a fortune here but not caring about anyone else only pay the police to really do a good job in there areas.. every thing else is not given any priority which isn't fair... hopefully one day this can change before crime gets worse.

To PMartini74...I used to work with those people in that control room, and the likelyhood of the "lines being busy" is nigh to impossible. SJPD Dispatch has one of the quickest pickup/response times in the nation. What sounds like "bombs going off" outside your door, may be a mile away. If you were asked to pinpoint the location, you would most likely be one of the people that: 1) Refused to sign a complaint should you even be sure of the house it came from) and 2) "Don't want the police to come to your door to talk to you because someone might see it. It's a low priority call because it's pretty much impossible to police every single call for fireworks that comes in on New Years and the 4th of July. Thanks to many of the voters in San Jose, they voted to cut funds for the police, thereby reducing the number of officers that can be on patrol. Priority calls are alloted to robberies, weapons calls, domestic disturbances with weapons, etc. Where people's lives are in danger. I have pets and there are alternatives, take them inside and turn up your television or radio to drown out the bangs, get a Thundershirt for them, if they're a hard case, get them tranquilizers from your vet. And above all, make sure they have licenses, collars and are microchipped. Can't blame your lack of preparation on the police.

So apparently fireworks ARE LEGAL in San Jose, since there have been dozens of them going off within 200 feet of my house for past two hours. Called San Jose non-emergency line... busy signal EVERY TIME I CALLED. I called 12 times. Eventually called Santa Clara Sheriff, who gave me their dispatch ph#, and no one answered. I let it ring about twenty times. Useless. Completely useless. It sounds like there are bombs going off outside my window every ten seconds. It's not far away.. It's right next door, and all around me. Where are the police?? I guess we should just make it legal to use fireworks since the SJPD can't enforce their own laws. I understand it's a busy night but this is ridiculous. The animals in community are all terrified and this is one day of year (next to New Years), when animals get lost because they run in fear. Thus, further contributing to San Jose's already horrific lost/spray/abandoned dog & cat population. This city SUCKS. There is a nasty cloud of smoke hanging in the air around my community now. Way to go SJPD!

If I could give them a 0 star I would. My roommate had his car broken into at our gated apartment complex, along with 4 other cars. He had his MacBook Pro stolen. Within less than 24hrs there was a bing on it from the person who stole it, giving us the address to where the laptop was. The police department told us they would meet us at that address, took all of our contact info. We were there saw 2 cop cars go by, tried to get their attention. Neither of them called us. We waited for 30 minutes. When we called the police department back they said they were too busy and not going to come. I am curious as to why a quick phone call to us, letting us know they decided they were too busy, was just such a burden for the people who are there to serve the public. I am so disappointed that my tax dollars go to pay these people. I know there are good cops but so far the San Jose police I have come into contact with have been very unprofessional and unimpressive.

  • Christi Hernandez

If I can give then a 0 I would. Today 9/26/18 I called to report a hit and run, as Well as an assault. There was very little to no damage to my car but it was a hit and run because the other driver was mad because she had no right away at a light and I did not let her go when myg light was green. He tailgated me and hit my car, drove on the side of my window and threw her drink at my car as well. We are talking about I had my baby and my baby nephew in my car. This other driver was able to drive away and officers saying there is nothing you can do! Talk about a MESSED UP SYSTEM. This person who I have her info, and know where she is at can't be arrested. Really? Then police asks themselves why the community don't trust them? Well here is your answer your job is to protect and serve!!! Do your JOB.

  • TREADLYFE

After a report was submitted from Morgan Hill it took months to find out which officer even had my report, Dectective Perez gloated about having cases on her desk for over a year as an explanation for zero follow up. Didn't even call a witness to the crime prior to discussing it with a district attorney and was getting ready to pass it off to another department by minimizing much of the situation. Part of this report was hundreds of people impacted by stolen information from six car dealerships across the bay, which continues today because they've done nothing to address this case. Not even a single follow up question about that. How does that make you feel knowing they ignore things that aren't just impacting one victim but potentially over a thousand?

  • Molly Barnwell

I realize most things/places in this day and time are going digital or electronic. But police work is now online? That doesn't make any sense. My family and I were visiting a tourist attraction in San Jose. While in the attraction our car windows were smashed in and every bit of our luggage/belongings were taken out of the car. We call the San Jose police where we were told they couldn't help us and to fill out a report online!??? What? So we did. Now in order for any of our insurance to help cover our losses we have tried doing individual reports that will not submit because we have already submitted once in the person's name the vehicle was in. So we basically just took a hell of a loss because of their non personable way of doing things.

On August 5th, Monday, My friend Maureen,a senior, had driven to SJC, from San Mateo area,in error, due to memory lapse, and without her cellphone. A kind person allowed her to call me, in late afternoon, I drove to that area, but with 101 traffic, an hour and half later, she evidently had departed the area, I circled, for an hour or trying spot her car, but no avail. I finally called the SJ Police dispatcher and within 15 minutes two officers arrived and specifics were given to them. I was quite worried. On my drive to San Mateo, the young lady from dispatch called and related the officers had found her and car. So relived! I returned to address, and the officer had stayed with her 'till I arrived. Thank you so very much ! W Thompson

Last night around midnight, my wife and I were suddenly awoken by loud bangs and the sky lighting up with Fireworks. I waited 10 minutes and when it just got louder and more fireworks, I called SJPD's non-emergency number. It was busy! I tried several times, and finally got a ring, but it just went in a loop with a message that someone would be on the line. Previously I lived in Sunnyvale for the last 10 years, and never experienced anything like this (fireworks at midnight and non-response from the police non-emergency line). Eventually after waiting on the line for over 10 minutes, the fireworks finally stopped. Wow, even when I lived in Los Angeles where police response was a joke, I at least could get someone on the line! Wow!

They can WRITE MANY SPEEDING TICKETS AT ALL THE CHALLENGER SCHOOLS IN SAN JOSE. That school cost about $22,000 per kid ITS A BILLION DOLLAR SCHOOL, LOTS OF PARENTS DRIVING RECLACE AND KIDS WITHOUT SEATBELTS! do YOUR JOB But they put u on hold when u call police and when u tell dispatch what happened it's worthless bc they never send anyone out. This is a pathetic San Jose is simply too big for these people to take Bite out of crime. My biggest problem with they put u on hold when calling 911. By the time they show up if they even show will be too late and someone would suffer. Many times u call they never show up and if they do it's HOURS LATER! I've noticed most Po pos hide in the day and come out at night. Be warned civilians

I was threatened by an angry man and his girlfriend at the Safeway off Capitol & Tully. The man said he was going to “kick my ass” & “kill me!” Although he made obvious terristic events and I had witnesses, Officer John Cary of the SJPD let the man and his Girlfriend go. They said there was nothing they could do. (Sorry they made him “apologize” The SJPD are the worst officers in the South Bay, they only help certain people. When certain people commit crimes they arrest them, if crimes are committed against a certain group of people it’s always an excuse why they won’t help you. San Jose community needs to start protecting ourselves since the police choose not to. Let the annual Purge begin .. . .

  • Danil Kislinskiy

Still await after three weeks when Police assign someone to the petty theft we reported. Nothing is moving forward, called police hundred of times. UPD. Sergeant just closed a case without any tries to investigate it. He refused to do anything officially by phone and said something like you should be happy that i'm talking to you now. When I insisted to reopen the case (because he just closed it before calling) he refused as well and said he doesn't care how people would protect their property. It's the worst experience with the police in the entire world!!!!!!!!

  • Eva Wick

There is an abandoned car in front of my house.I called 311 and non emergency, was on hold repeatedly for 30 minutes or more,no one answers the phone! Web site is no help, reported this car with a picture,it could be abandoned in front of my home after crime,I don't know why it's been in front of my home in Willow Glen I just recently moved here and am disgusted by lack of help from police and inability to reach anyone online or on phone I pay 12k property tax/ year but no police service available! if I park at a meter I'm ticketed if meter expiresbutno

  • nishant panigrahi

I caught people carjacking live in the parking garage of my community which I videotaped. The SJPD's response was that they couldn't do anything since the car wasn't actually stolen. A second time I had my own car vandalized and an attempted theft when I was sleeping at night. The SJPD's response was that they couldn't do anything since they needed to have detailed evidence of the suspect provided. I guess the only way to get SJPD to work is to catch the culprits in action, let them steal and then call in. Well, that's great use of Tax Dollars

  • Jim Feaster

San jose police chief Mr. Garcia is doing a great job Actually fantastic ! He has changed department He gave it a fresh look and Direction. • Henry Ruddle

I was involved in a traffic accident this week, and I was quite impressed by the very efficient and professional police response. In less than five minutes, uniformed police were in charge, managing traffic and taking reports. The other driver had minor injuries, and the EMTs were right there to check him out (thankfully, he did not need to go to the hospital). I mentioned to the officer taking reports that I was on my way to deliver food so I was anxious to finish. He took that into account,

  • Gabriela Reynoza

If I could give a 0, I would. 2 days ago my brother was stopped for a traffic violation and when the officer ran his name he started calling him a criminal and told him to fall to the floor and kicked him to the ground hence the fact that my brother was in an ankle brace since he has a broken ankle! The officer did not care . He kicked him to the ground and treated him like dirt. So thankful we have these types of “peace officers”.makes you second guess this criminal justice system.

  • Valerie Voigt

Emergency response is good, BUT: 1. They asked me to bring in a bag of evidence, took it, and then told me there would be no investigation despite bountiful evidence; 2. Non-emergency call answering is basically nonexistent. I finally gave up and called 911, but she assured me that non-emergency was max 5 minutes hold and transferred me before I could tell her she was wrong. I gave up: the crazy person will continue causing a hazard in the parking lot. I hope nobody gets hurt.

  • LEO PULIDO

There is not enough police to service every call. If lives are not in danger they lag.. For obvious reasons. Too many calls not enough cops. If you go to the station.. At first it had the DMV feel.. Once I got to the front, believe it or not they were very nice, professional. Had real human advice. We spoke for about 15 minutes. He was in no hurry to get me out of there. He listened to my problems and gave advice and different legal outcomes for different solutions. Not bad.

  • Matt N

I just tried calling the non emergency number to report a dog that's been in a car for over 4 hrs plus an additional 24mins on hold. Then to be asked to peer into the locked vehicle's window to assess the dog's well being. Well I'm not a vet so if you all care the address is 2876 Hemlock Ave. Grey Nissan SUV. Do the jobs your paid for. What's next asking the public to enforce the laws. Thankful I'm only visiting and don't have to rely on these jokers to have my back.

  • Vanessa Taitano

No answer after an accident in an intersection at a freeway entrance. A few minutes later, two cop cars drive by and dont even stop. Yet they love to pull people over right at the off ramp of 17 and bascom avenue all the time... which is one of the most dangerous places as weve seen like 5 accidents happen there in the last few weeks. One of these days, the cop car is gonna get rear ended. So dumb, two of us called, no one ever answered.

  • Hao Chen

While surely not perfect and not leaving good impression to all (it is impossible to be), I think this police department deserves a better overall rating. Through my few encounters with police officers and staff there, most of them are friendly and professional, with a couple exceptions. Considering recent politics and funding issues and the amount of negative incidents they need to deal with on a daily basis, they are doing a great job.

  • ariels dad-408

Very poor customer service, in the process of arresting me I asked for no handcuffs they said no that's #1, #2 on my way to the jail I was hungry so I asked for them to take me to Wendy's before we they take me in , they refused.. they said theirs food were I'm going l.. the sandwich was awful, the bread was dry , and my ham was warm... worst customer sevice ever .. never eating there again.and to top it off the bill was expensive

  • R. Farjad

Someone had parked in front of our garage door completely blocking the house for hours. My wife was alone with kids and wanted to leave the house. They were worried they could be theives or burglars. She called police many times, but they couldn't care less! They said it was not a seriouss matters anda not life or death issue! I guess they wanted to wait for something serious happen before they do anything that's all late!

  • Ray Gonzalez

Most San Jose Police Officers will take citizens as a challenge, they will do anything to upset you or provoke you, be careful do not fall on their game all they want is to proof their selfs how much power they got over citizens. Dispatch service gets a 0+ they seem to act like attorneys providing legal advised. Over all I feel very insecure and afraid of our San Jose police force. There is no Zero stars too bad!!!!

  • Javier Vizcarra

I was at the Bad Bunny Concert last night at the SAP Center, and there was illegal vendors selling alcohol to young kids as old as 12 years old and San Jose Police wasn't doing anything about it. That is wrong in so many ways. San Jose Police department, step up your game tonight because the illegal vendors selling alcohol to young kids will be there tonight. Send them a message, we don't want this here.

  • Dummy Work On Car

A picture is worth a thousands words. San Jose Police or Police across the nations should come up with a 911 app where the public can upload photos when calling 911. Dispatchers ask for description or address when people call in 911 when people are in panic and don't remember anything. Why not have an app where we can send description and police can locate the address to come quickly.

  • Bailey Avanzo

NOT helpful what’s so ever, coming from out of town and getting our window bashed in on our rental car. Reminder we’re NOT from here. They told us to go online and report it? Like that’s going to do ANYTHING. Your job is to protect the public. Besides that ONE person which would be your security community police officer that came was GREAT! Give her a raise! Officer Concerpuon.

  • kampcom

I thought you could report anytime but it wasn't listed that you couldn't. Anyways, I tried to report a domestic abuse crime on Friday around 5-6. The operator told me to wait till Monday. I now know why victims dont report, get the courage enough to report than get knocked down to wait 2 days. Than on Monday 5/13/2019 the officer in the front desk refused to take the report.

  • Cyrus Shahriari

Two officers came by this evening to report that a distant family member has been hospitalized. Both officers were very professional, courteous and most of all took the time to explain the situation. I did not get the names as I was shuffling to contact other family members. Thank you in any case if anyone is reading this on the adminstration side.

  • David Alvarez

By far the worst police department in California. You call them for something and they re-direct you to there web page. Seriously? Or they tell you they won’t send and officer because it’s not an urgent matter. Like really? I just reported to you people breaking the law and you tell me it’s not an urgent matter. POS department I swear.

  • Alina Wu

I called 311 to report Reed school bullying issues and results in a medical bill due to son got beaten up a big lump on head, the principal is refused to do anything about it, so I called 311 for waiting 30 minutes without anybody answering my call. This SJ PD is not doing a good job here but they still getting pay? Wow! Disappointed

  • Charleigh Huntington

I came in this afternoon to report a crime after being urged by Family Justice Center Lawyers and the district attorney to report to the police or they can not do anything about my case only to be refused to be heard and turned away without being able to report my abuse. How do victims even get help? It seems you can't.

  • Kyle Lanza

Useless police department. A coworker and I had our rental car broken into and our backpacks stolen out of the trunk. They told us there is nothing they can do and to file a report online. If there is nothing you can do you might as well shutdown your police department and let this city turn to more of a free for all.

  • Abhik Roy

My mom's car was stolen early this week and she was devastated. San Jose Police found the car by the end of the week and called us. Arresting those car thieves would have been ideal because it cost us time, effort, and money to get the car back, but great Job on finding the car!! You have regained my respect.

  • omar pimentel

Our scion xb was broken into by 2 men in a nissan quest so i call 911 and not even 15 minutes pass by and san jose police dispatcher call me back and ask me if i can id those people who broke into the scion and thank god s.j.p.d caught the thieves. I cant thank you guys enough man keep up the good work...

  • Paul Chiang

Call center said that I had to stay in place until police arrived to answer questions after a family member's car was stolen when I was driving it. When a cop arrived hours later, he told me that he needs to talk to the owner instead of me and he could talk to her over the phone. Totally uncoordinated.

  • Jacqueline Bartolomei

If you have to submit an online report of an incident, good luck with that. I hope you don’t need to contact them for support because you would need three mornings to speak with somebody and when finally your call is answered you will have the most disrespectful service you could imagine. GOOD LUCK!!

  • Charles Dougherty

There have been far too many vehicle break-ins in the Edenvale-Haven neighborhood just in the past week. Maybe a neighborhood protective association should be started since the police have not been able to stop this. Then deduct the cost of hiring a private security company from our property taxes.

  • dabz N slugg

Officer Daniel Rodriguez Is Committing perjury in my own personal case he need to be investigated he knows I’m telling to truth but denies it and gets away with it because he wears a badge that I pay for , I pay a lot of taxes and I like all tax payers deserve respect and honesty

  • Sharmin Rodriguez

The cops that came i spoke to today. One was a complete jerk to me even though i did nothing wrong. He threatened to deem my rv unsafe because he felt like it. My rv has been inspected and is safe. So he can shove it. Definatly doesnt make me want to like cops anytime soon.

  • Tonya Edwards

Don't entrust your minors to the officers with this force. It only takes a few bad seeds and they will cross polinate the rest. Usually because you don't betray your own. Letting grown adults walk away, from an adult situation. Adults words are stronger and more adamant.

  • Anson Barnes

They protect us every single day and make sure no one can harm us God bless the San Jose police Department and all there efforts to keep us safe, no one ever has to live in an abusive home environment (: if you need Santa Clara county services call 211 …

  • Christian Moreno

A cop pulled me over and accused me of being in a gang, when i told them that i wasn't they didn't believe me and they put me in the back of a car, called two more officers and then searched my car while breaking a panel. Thanks, they'll hear from me soon.

  • Marissa Gonzalez

They were very gentle and careful when they handcuffed me , their vehicles are incredibly roomy not comfortable tho . Overall, they were very professional. Will get arrested by them again , forsure this summer . 100% recommend it’s like a free Uber ride .

  • Aalok Karnik

spoke to PD regrading street closures on Cinco De Mayo weekend and they were super courteous. Forwarded my call to others who could assist me with this information. Not sure if I should give out the officer's name here. Thank you San Jose PD.

  • Frank Nguyen

Called to report a bike theft on my property - after ten minutes to get through, I was told to call back from 12-4PM to report and get a case number. Please put that information on the website so others would not waste their time like I did.

  • DeVondra Beauford

Had them do a wellness check on my son and they try to tell me the address not valid when I've sent UPS items and have court preceding against the person who lives there so I know it's the right address. Lazy police officers.

  • Eric Bayler

Miserable, non-responsive, and completely unhelpful. Four-hour wait for response to a hit-and-run accident. As the victim, I would have to pay $50 to get a copy of the incident report for filing with insurance claim.

  • E Morales

Nobody answers the non-emergency number. I have called in the past with no luck. Today, been trying to get ahold of someone to make a report but the call system reroutes to the main answering portion over and over.

  • Amanda Crowe

I waited on hold for 45 minutes to file a report with suspect information. If I didn't have suspect info I could have filed the report online. 45 minutes?! That's crazy! Worst police department experience ever!

  • Peter Brim

There is basically no Police Services on the weekends unless it is a shooting, knife fight or car jacking. Everything else is low priority. This city police services is a joke compared to neighboring cities.

  • Lakshminarasimha Rao Boppe

Please take a note of the timings before you reach, the lobby hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM. I arrived around 5:30 PM only to learn about the lobby business hours on the front door. Hope this helps someone.

  • Romello Farrow

Constantly harasses people. 7 times I've been pulled over in my 97 Grand Prix because my vehicle is "Suspicious" how many times the officer showed to court? 0. Waste of my time and waste of tax dollars.

  • Salina Gutierrez

Seriously the worst number ever. I have been on hold for a half hour trying to get a hold of someone at the non emergency department but of course nobody is there to answer. Don’t even bother calling

  • Mike D

The Trump rally. Disgusting mob violence. The worst police behavior ever. The mayor, police "leaders", and cops themselves should all be fired. Comes round goes round people. We won't forget.

  • Marilou Flores

This is about the maroon gmc van at Interbay Dr. In San Jose.not moving expired tags, smelly coz somebody sleeps there.stinky pee on the street.thats really Bothers neighborhood need action

A neighbor was wandering and confused. Was not sure if medical emergency or dementia, did not know where she lived. Called SJPD for 10 minutes. No answer. Called back. No answer. Scary.

  • Yin Kelz

Waiting over 4 hours just to have someone escort me inside my ex work office. Every-time I call they don’t have anyone available as yet. You won’t get a estimated time at all!

  • Janice Carey

My husband walked out to find his Honda stolen. They found it by 10:30. The officers were observant. The thief lost his stuff that he left in the car. KUDOS San Jose Police

  • Benjamin Dombro

Me and my wife live by Kelly Park where there are homeless encampments by the creek. They play loud music and use power tools all night. I call SJPD and they do nothing

  • sheryl silva

Thier 911 may have fast response times, but non emergency has 0 response time! Was on hold and stuck in a loop of recordings and no one picked up after 40 mins on hold!

  • Jay Akhtar

Long wait times, so much delay for the reports to be available for pickup. They only accept cash, no cards. Paid parking on street if visitor parking full.

  • Rodrigo Ryder

I needed help filing a report and the officers just laughed at my face laughing that I got scammed. I guess they wont be recieving any donations from me

  • Daniel

Called twice for noise complaint from neighbour party. No officers showed up to resolve it. I had to sleep with my earplugs on. I am so disappointed.

  • Clayton Bigzby

Detained a citizen for no reason. She was filming from the sidewalk and not getting in the way and the cop put her in a patrol car. Tyrants.

  • Dj Christian

The most useless police department in California. Super unhelpful. They car more about stopping a modified car than stopping actual crime.

  • Jyn Bee

911 dispatcher and officers who dealt with my emergency incident handled it very well. Response time was quick. Thank you!

Don't bother trying to report anything to non emergency. They just put you in an endless cycle that leads no where.
