Sewri Fort, also known as Sewri Killa, is a historic fort located in the Sewri neighborhood of Mumbai, India. It was built by the British in the 17th century as a watchtower and a strategic defensive structure for the city's protection. The fort was constructed with the objective of guarding the eastern waterways of Mumbai, providing a vantage point to monitor the movement of ships and defend against potential attacks. Over the years, the significance and purpose of the fort changed, and it eventually fell into disuse. Today, Sewri Fort is a heritage site that attracts tourists and history enthusiasts. The fort stands as a reminder of Mumbai's colonial past and architectural heritage. The architecture of Sewri Fort follows a mix of British and Indian styles. It is built using basalt stone and features large walls, bastions, and arches. The fort offers a panoramic view of the eastern waterfront and the nearby Sewri mudflats, which are known for their diverse bird population, including migratory flamingos. While I don't have personal experiences to share, visitors to Sewri Fort can explore the historical structure, appreciate the architectural details, and enjoy the scenic views it offers. The fort's location also makes it a popular spot for birdwatching, especially during the winter months when flamingos flock to the mudflats. Please note that any developments or changes that may have occurred at Sewri Fort since September 2021 would be beyond my current knowledge. It's always a good idea to check for updated information from reliable sources if you're planning to visit.

With Bombay being an important stronghold for colonial powers, the Portuguese and subsequently the British built fortifications at many strategic spots along the city’s western as well as eastern coastlines. Built in the late 1600s, the Sewri fort then lay on the eastern shore of Parel Island. It has served as a check post, a place to hold prisoners of war and even as a godown for the Mumbai Port Trust. On the western harbour line, get down at Sewri station and cross over to the east. Walk past the lone traffic signal and follow the road that leads to the Colgate-Palmolive Factory. Look out for a flight of steps sandwiched between the factory and Mumbai Port Trust’s Giri Nagar. These seem to lead up only to a mosque, but are also the only entrance to the fort. Bring along water and some food, there is nothing in the immediate vicinity, except at Sewri station - Walk southwards along Reay Road and P D’ Mello Road to experience the city’s relatively unknown eastern waterfront; or move northwards on the Mahul road to see the salt pans - If you happen to be here in the right season, you can see hundreds of migratory pink flamingos that flock to the Sewri mud flats. The fort is at an elevated position overlooking them, or try the piece of land behind the Colgate factory to be on the same level as the birds. Better still, drive down to Mahul and find a fisherman willing to take you down the creek, to be right in the midst of the birds

Mumbai is blessed with so many forts strategically located at it's coast line like Worli Fort, Mazagoan Fort, Madh Fort, Bandra Fort, Mahim Fort and Sewri Fort. Amongst all these forts I think Bandra Fort and Sewri Fort are decently taken care by the authorities. Sewri Fort is just about 1-2km distance from Sewri station. It's strategic location is such that you can enjoy sunrise ⛅ if you go early on the morning. A beautiful red sun coming out of Creek water presents magnificent view. Fort is relatively in good shape though it's not a very big fort but it's structure is very much intact. At one side of the fort is a huge Creek from where you can see classic Flamingo point where thousands of flamingo migrates every year to this place and from the other side of the fort you can see highrise buildings of Mumbai. There is also a Durga near to this fort with good number of huge trees around presenting a nice view soothing to the eyes. There is no security guards taking care of this fort and there is no entry fees also. We reached to this place on our cycles and found approach road in a good condition. If you visit to this Fort, don't forget to visit Flamingo point also which is half a km from this place. Don't expect too much from this place but you won't b disappointed if you visit this place. Hope you will find my review useful. I recommend you to discover this hidden and unknown place of Mumbai and spread a word so more n more people visits this place and authorities awakes to take good care of this fort.

Sewri Fort in Mumbai is a captivating historical landmark that offers a glimpse into the city's rich past. With its intriguing architecture and serene surroundings, it is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and explorers alike. The fort's age-old stone walls exude a sense of grandeur, evoking memories of its colonial and maritime significance. As you wander through the ruins, you'll be transported back in time to an era when the fort played a crucial role in safeguarding the city against potential invaders. The location of Sewri Fort adds to its charm. Situated along the eastern waterfront of Mumbai, it provides a stunning panoramic view of the sea and mangroves, making it a delightful spot for photography and relaxation. Though the fort is in ruins, the Maharashtra Government has taken measures to preserve its heritage, adding information boards that share historical anecdotes. The fort's simplicity and lack of commercialization add to its allure, allowing visitors to soak in the authentic essence of Mumbai's history. However, it is essential to note that the site lacks amenities and can be challenging to access for people with mobility issues due to uneven terrain. Nevertheless, the overall experience of visiting Sewri Fort is rewarding and educational, offering a memorable journey through Mumbai's past. *Review by AI

  • Tushar Shirwalkar

One of the best well preserved fort amongst all the forts of Mumbai. Most of the structure is intact and is being restored and maintained by Mumbai Fort Circuit Project under Department of Archaeology and Museums. The fort was built by the British in 1680 on a 60 m hillock on the Parel island to ward off frequent attacks by Siddis. It has high stone walls all around with an inner wall. The entrance is a stone doorway that leads into a courtyard. To prevent enemy directly charging from the main entrance, the inner entrances are placed perpendicular to the main entrances. Architectural highlights include pentagonal room along with a long domed corridor, and linear vaulted structures, central courtyard which is around 60 x 20 feet. Two partially underground vaults The fort is worth a visit with family in the evening. From the highest point above the entrance gate, the fort offers grand views of the Sewri Mud flats, Refineries, Elephanta Caves , JNPT Port and even view of the main land. One can also walk to the nearby Sewri Mud Flats where your family can enjoy watching flocks of flamingoes at a very close range (during Dec-March period).

  • Vithal Parab

This is one of the heritage site in Mumbai. A very good place but very less known to rest of the Mumbai people. A must visit place to understand history of British ruled Mumbai. It was functional till independence, but as we forgot our ancient culture & heritage, this fort also over looked. A very good & maintained fort though it was small. During British rule, chances like this place & surrounding would be part of the fort. One can see sewri creek from here and was built to control that route. Mumbai trans harbor link goes around it. That gives additional views to this place. Try visiting here over a weekend, walkable distance from Sewri station. Best time to visit is evening,

This Sewri fort (शिवडी किल्ला) was built by British in 1680 as a watch tower for Mumbai harbor. I recently visited here with my friends to enjoy the peaceful sunrise. However, I was surprised to see that the fort was not in good condition. It is definitely not a place for tourists. Worst thing is that this is a historical place but you'll smell booze and piss in corners of the fort. People are smoking and drinking alcohols. Really a shame! The only good thing about Sewri is the Sunrise and Sunset view! Government should improve the place and protect our historical monument.

  • priyank gala

The place is unsafe for women.. The locals asked us not to get inside the fort as it is crowded by vile men. One could see from outside people consuming alcohol and their very appearance seemed loathsome. Also we could hardly see any taxis or rickshaws taking us to the spot although its not more than 10 mins walk for young people from the station. Ola and Uber can be booked if one is not travelling by train. The flamingo point is another 5 -10 mins walk from the fort. Got to know that one must visit the place in early morning hours to catch a glimpse of flamingos possibly

  • Chaitanya Kamat

This fort is very beautiful, but the government is not paying attention. Just putting a board outside or arranging for the lighting doesn't mean you are looking after a historical monument. There is no government official to take care of the fort. Nobody cares. People have painted their names everywhere on the walls on the fort. Shivdi Fort is a majestic fort. If govt takes proper care of it, it can earn revenue (if they care at all).

  • Niharika 'Nix' Nayak

It looks like a pretty nice place. Lovely view. Only issue is that women aren't allowed. My friend (another girl) and I walked in because we didn't see any signs and even stayed there for 45 minutes. Nobody said anything at first but after sometime someone shouted for us to leave and we left. The area didn't seem very safe either. If women aren't allowed they should put up a sign that says so.

  • Mohsin Khan

Locating this Fort from road was difficult. As near by all HPCL and BPCL trucks stand. And when we drive more inside. A small patch is there which lead to the fort. Recently BMC has done the beautification work and it's good. But cleaning is not done on a regular way as compared to sion Fort area. But the view is amazing from here... Birds has formed there homes. One can find peace here..

  • Nishant Singh

Best place to go if you want to see flamingoes but take your binoculars. The place is empty in the mornings and the view is from the top of the fort is scenic. You could also see the development of the Mumbai trans-harbour bridge. It’s a beautiful fort but people have spoilt the wall by writing their names but still worth a visit.

  • Sajid Sayed

SEWRI fort in Mumbai built by the British in 1680, fort served as a watch tower, atop a quarried hill overlooking the Mumbai harbour. During winter flamingo is seen in abundance mostly dec ending and Jan. Jalalshah & Murad shah 2 Shrines/DARGHA make this place more religious. Can view new bridge construction work in progress....

  • Mohan K Nair

The fort was built primarily for defence, and embellishments are absent. It is bordered by high stone walls, including an inner ring for added protection. The Sewri Fort is a fort in Mumbai built by the British at Sewri. Built in 1680, fort served as a watch tower, atop a quarried hill overlooking the Mumbai harbour.

It was a good place to go for relaxation but unfortunately everywhere you see the peoples are having weed like charas ganja an all... It smells really bad there you can't even stand by them... It has a good view point but again you'll find ganjedi people's there an end up suffocating to that smell

  • Adriel Fernandes

Not a great place to visit by itself however worth a trip if you are planning on visiting Sewri to see the Flamingoes. It's quite close to the Sewri Jetty and not much to look at since it's a ruin and barely anything remains but you could get a good vantage point of the Flamingoes from here.

  • Mohit Shah

Not well maintained and it is very small but good place. But it is a good place to see flamingos during the winter. It was made by the British. It will take time to locate this place as it is in the very much interior of Sewri. No need of sport shoes as there is no climbing required

  • ravikant vijay chavan

Historically place and the structure is still good but the fort currently is in worst condition in present . Currently used for smoking, spitting and for playing cricket by local children's. boys climbs on dome unmannerly. Sorry not safe for family visit

  • Vikrant Khuspe

Silent calm place. Old structure is eye-catching and sea view is amazing. The fort itself has 1-2 floors and attractive structure of rooms. Person can easily spend an hour or two. No food and snacks shops in 500m area. Bring own water to chill here.

  • Vikrant Ghenekar

This is a peaceful place. We are unable to see sea properly. Need to improvement. Sevari's fort is a historical place.

Fantastic place. Most of the fort structure is intact. A nice view of the sea, and the upcoming sealink. Wish the authorities would give a little attention to keep it clean and put proper signboards and approach road.

  • SHUBHAM AMBOLKAR

Great place in mid of crowded city with surreal view of sea and mangroves. You can also see the under construction Mumbai trans harbour link road between ulwe and sewri. Morning is the best time to visit the fort.

  • Avnesh Rai

This place is so peaceful that you will feel the whole ancient vibe here. It's my chill spot when i need a mental break. Just sitting here looking at the sea and waiting for sunset is basically the best thing
