Shri Mariamman Temple in Mount Edgecombe, Durban, South Africa, is another significant temple dedicated to the Hindu goddess Mariamman. The temple is located in the heart of the Mount Edgecombe area, which is known for its beautiful gardens and golf courses. It was established in 1885 by South Indian immigrants who settled in the area and wanted to continue practicing their religion. The temple's architecture is inspired by the Dravidian style of South India, characterized by its elaborate sculptural details and towering gopurams (entrance gateways). The temple's main gopuram is adorned with colorful sculptures of various Hindu deities, including Mariamman, Ganesha, and Murugan. The temple's interior is equally impressive, with intricate carvings and paintings on the walls and ceilings. Devotees come to the temple to offer prayers and seek blessings from Mariamman, who is believed to protect against diseases and bring good fortune. The temple hosts several festivals throughout the year, including the annual Mariamman festival, which attracts thousands of devotees from all over the world. During the festival, the temple comes alive with music, dance, and elaborate processions featuring the temple's beautifully adorned chariots. Shri Mariamman Temple in Mount Edgecombe is not only a place of worship but also a cultural and social hub for the South Indian community in Durban. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the Indian diaspora in South Africa and is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.

Beautiful temple, only issue is the temple rules keep changing, been there this July camphor can't be lit any where in or around the temple which is strange as camphor has been used traditionally for thousands of years and in that temple as well now one can't burn camphor there. 2 years back the goat that was offered was not allowed to go round the main temple, this year the goat was allowed to go round the main temple. I think the members should stop changing traditional rules and making their own. Devoted people are coming to pray and when they leave they should feel happy.

Very pleasant visit for the annual prayer during Easter. Very well organised. Queue very well managed. I was very pleased to see old and devotees with disabilities were given prefence to bypass queues. Plenty of official make queue systematic. To top it all, beautiful live bhajans rendered by music groups, made following lines more harmonious. Plenty of car guards as well. Even when I was leaving temple at about 10pm, cleaning staff was deployed to clean up everywhere. Not forgetting stalls making fresh bhajas and other savouries very tempting.

Now religion is a personal preference. I was invited to lunch at the temple today and to celebrate their Navariti prayer today. The temple it's self if a beautiful work of art. Just being at the temple with the vibe and festive atmosphere and good music was uplifting. The bountiful food was delicious all cooked over open fire. The patrons were all friendly. It was a most enjoy afternoon spent at the temple just soaking up the atmosphere. Recommend.

I've been going to this temple since I was a little girl and now take my daughter's along with me. It is a beautiful temple and on my recent visit there were even peacocks walking around. However I find every time we go something has changed or is not allowed. This time around there was no 1 to assist us or to turn the idols we brought along. We were told they had all gone and it wasn't even 3pm yet so that was disappointing.

I do not recommend the services from the priest at mount edgecombe temple was turned down after being involved in a car crash and requested for blessings only to be refused even though I came all the way from Gauteng 4Nov21 but nevertheless I continued praying to the almighty without the unfriendly priest I must say that in my local temple a priest will never turn down a patron when faced with a dilemma

A must visit if temples are an interest , I remember this temple stemming from very humble beginnings to the beautiful structure it is today Be sure to catch the Easter festival , the are food stalls , and other markets . The food stalls serve Meat as well . During the Diwali festival many more stalls can be found in the temple hall .

The Temple is in good condition. Good enough parking in the area and is generally very safe. They accept donations and offerings. Usually you can give fruit and milk. But clothes are also accepted. You usually spend under an hour here unless its a peak period like Good Friday, or other religious observations.

A landmark in Durban for over 125 years. The festival around Easter time is an event to be experienced. The temple is also a popular venue for traditional weddings. Expansively renovated and restored but incomparable to the intimate setting I recall from my childhood visits. Still awesome

How can they stop us from not burning camphor? Its an important part and we are also not allowed to pour milk on the shivalinga. The shivling was so dry and left burning in the sun. Heart breaking to see

A significant step of a Puja is prohibited (Burning of Camphor), however there is an alternative which is burning of oil lamps, but these are not provided around the temple.
