The feeling in this place is like no other hospital I’ve ever been in. All of the nurses, doctors, physical therapists, workers are exceptionally kind and caring. Doctors are educated in the most up to date treatments. We thought we were going to have to travel to Boston or Chicago for my daughter’s scoliosis, but then found that we had a Shriner’s here in Salt Lake City. My daughter got fitted for a brace (custom made to fit her and her back-with trained specialists who go to a post grad school to learn how to make these braces) when she was 13. She wore it under her clothes while sleeping and then to school until she went to cheer practice. When she was 16 she started her period and she didn’t wear her brace any longer. She had x-rays every 6 months to keep an eye on it. Her back had little movement until she turned 17, then it moved by 2 to 3°. Because one of her curves was slightly over the 51° curve we opted to have surgery. Dr. Heflin educated us on the pros and cons and let us make a decision. We chose to have surgery since she was still young and in good shape, she wasn’t planning on dancing or cheering any longer, and we didn’t want her to end up being a hunched over old lady. The surgery went well, the only small complaint I have is that sometimes the nurses were not diligent about watching when she had her pain medicine in the hospital. So, we would have to request it and if they were busy with somebody else, by the time they got to her, her pain had really kicked in. We also had to replace a few more pain pills after she was released. The nurse was not very kind or thoughtful when I asked for them. I know that with the opioid crisis, They have to be careful. But, since my daughter was basically an adult, I think she needed a little bit more than a younger child might need. She had major back surgery and was sent home with 10- 5mg oxycodone tablets. She just needed a few more and was fine after that with ibuprofen/Tylenol. She actually did better after she stopped taking the muscle relaxers-I think they made her a little emotional. Dr. Heflin’s assistant was amazing, she called a few times to check on my daughter (and was very apologetic about the nurse and the meds). I would definitely recommend Shriner’s to anyone. Just stay on top of your child’s medicine in the hospital-asking for it just before they are due for another dose so you can stay on top of the pain. It’s been 8 months and my daughter is doing great-she still has some numbness along her incision line-which is normal. Shriners encompasses great people, at the top of their game!! I will forever be grateful!!

I have donated thousands of dollars here over the past few years. Unfortunately, we came to need their services a few months ago when my son was diagnosed CP. I actually wouldn't know what this place is like since it's so expensive. I'd genuinely like to know where all of the donated money goes? Please don't give me a generic response like "please email our customer service". I have actually already emailed them. I spoke to a financial counselor who offered no help and one of the directors. No one offered to help us. AT ALL!!! How in the world do you come up with it costing between $750 and over $1500 just to walk through your doors. This is their "facility fee" for anyone who wants to know. And just by the way, Primary children's facility fee is usually well under $100 per appointment. Shriners was going to charge us over $2000 just to see a neurologist. Despite the unbelievable wait at Primary's, the total cost of our first neurology visit was just over $200. So how this place is getting away with taking donations AND charging families unrealistic amounts of money is just disgusting.

I am a former patient of this hospital. Back in my day I was at the old facility. My experience with hospital was first rate. Marie Holmes was the director then. Connie (was not her real name but what we all called her) was the head of the outpatient clinic.Dr. Dunn was my physician. Mrs. Kimble was the therapist. Mrs. Brennan was the the O.R. nurse. Kris Ferguson was the social worker. Mrs. Patterson was a ward nurse. The staff was truly amazing. They became our family away from home. They really made the best of difficult times. I am sorry to see that the old hospital is now gone. I spent a lot of time traveling to the hospital; and being hospitalized there. The view from the ward sunroom was truly amazing overlooking SLC both day and night. I had come to this website to see if any historical photos but I am sad to see there are none. Your present and future are only as good as your past. Please consider posl.p.ting some of the hospital's past. God bless you all for everything you did for me

I love Shriner’s Hospitals for Children SLC. They have been a blessing in my life to say the least. The doctors and staff are kind-hearted people who truly care about their patients and want to not only help you physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. I was a patient at the Shriner’s Hospital in Galveston, Texas and received incredible care there. I came up to Utah for college and the Salt Lake location has been just as incredible. Shriner’s Hospital Salt Lake has given me opportunities to meet and speak with other burn victims who have been through what I’ve been through, leaving me with hope and strength to push on. Shriner’s Hospitals all over the US help their patients know they’re not alone and that they’re going to be okay. If you, your child, or someone you know are admitted into a Shriner’s Hospital, you’re in good hands.

We are so appreciative of the services Shriners offers. My daughter has CP and we've benefited from the excellent Physical Therapists. They really make the therapy fun and have creative ways to get the children to move and build strength. We've also been the recipient of multiple donated gait trainers and walkers. They let us take them home and use them to see if it is a good fit at home. We did that until we ended up with my daughter's wheelchair. The Wheelchair department is fantastic. I love that they really want the chair to be perfect for each child. My daughter could pick the color and even got wheels that light up. They also are very attentive to things they can add or modify on it to help it be the most beneficial to us - like something to hold an oxygen tank, or a tray to attach on top. We love Shriners!!

My son, Tommy, was born March 30, 1965. He received your loving care for many years from age two to age twenty. having around 20 surgeries. March 30, 2016 was his fifty first birthday and because of cancer, three days later he went home to be with his Heavenly Father. I want to thank you for not only the medical part, but the love, knowledge, fun, wisdom and gentle care you showered on him. Truthfully, you had a great part in raising Tommy to the fantastic man he became... plus you gave my husband and I peace of mind while he was away from home. Your doctors, nurses, teachers, grey ladies, recreation leaders and Shriner's were part time parents... Tommy often spoke of "Uncle Gene" a Shriner who visited with him at least once a week. Again, I thank you for your loving care. Dorothy Ricci Tommy's Mother

My name is Ryan, and I have had over 14 surgery's in my day. When I was a baby I was born with Club Feet. By the time I got done with most of my surgery's I finally had one in Salt Lake City Utah by Shriners. hospital. The hospital wasn't very comfy like most places, I still have horror nightmares thinking about this place. I am now 31 years old, and can still remember my days in the hospital. I had a cast that was put on too tight, at night time I was screaming because of pain. The cast was creating a hole in my right foot. I still have this hole which eventually will need to be corrected. The nurses would tell me to shut up and go to bed people are sleeping. This mistake that you have created will be with me for the rest of my life. Thanks.

We first brought our daughter to Shriners Salt Lake when she was 9 months old from out of state after completing tons of research on what specialist could best meet her needs. She is now almost 6. She was born with a limb difference and deformity on her left arm and had surgery in February of 2019 by Dr. Hutchinson and his team. We couldn't be more pleased with the care we have received, especially since we travel to come once a year for appointments, how well her surgery turned out and how much function she has gained. When she was there for surgery, she was given a stuffed animal by the security staff and a blanket that was donated by a fellow parent. We are proud to be a part of the Shriners family!

  • Brad Giles

We are very grateful to Shriner's Children's Hospital for how they have helped our daughter. She has osteogenesis imperfecta and has had excellent medical care from the staff at the hospital. They are always so caring and attentive that my daughter actually looks forward to her visits! They know us by name and really care about our family. The physical therapy department is phenomenal and have helped her develop so much strength and resilience- thank you Mark! Our doctors, Dr. Carroll and Dr. Tyler, are the finest doctors we have the privilege of knowing. We are grateful for all of their care. We highly recommend Shriner's Children's Salt Lake City, Utah.

I despise coming going to Shriners, we only go occasionally because it is down the street. The reason I don’t like it is for one employee, Isabel has such bad attitude and a heavy voice, we dislike her vibe it just doesn’t feel like a good place. The previous time we went we had asked for help from isabel and all she did was 1: give us attitude and 2: after she said she’ll get help for us she instead went on her phone for 17 minutes. We always see her poke fun at the poor children that coming into Shriners. We hope Isabel does not continue to work in this profession and soon terminated for her uncanny behavior.

My daughter has been a patient of Shriners Hospital, SLC for more than a decade. We have seen the x-ray, orthotic and seating departments as well as worked with the therapy, clinic, surgical and inpatient/outpatient staff. The medical team has become like family to us and truly care about my whole family, not just my daughter. Nobody likes going to the dr or having surgery but the employees go out of their way to make it a positive experience. It isn't uncommon to see the hospital administrator chat with families and he is present at almost every event. Can't say enough good about this hospital.

  • Michelle Cox

I will not ever come back here again I have had the worst experience ever one if I go to a dr I want someone to explain what is going on with my kids not just say ok well let's do this and see you back in 6-9 months I have been told by 2 drs that surgery is probably my next thing to do for my daughter never have her dr here ever suggested surgery they just make her be in pain but refused to give her pain meds but afos aren't helping and she fractured 2 bones this last year because of negligence with care I am not happy and I finally found drs that actually care about her pain

I am 68 years old and a polio survivor whose life was completely changed by the Shriners organization and the hospital in Salt Lake City Utah. My first surgery saved my leg from being amputated at 7 years old. My hometown doctors said my leg would only deteriorate and amputation was the only thing left. Thank God my father came into contact with a local Shriner. I went to school in the hospital joined Girl Scouts and the Shrine Circus came to the hospital parking lot. I also got to see Dennis the Menace. I credit my life and all my blessings to God and the Shriners.

  • Angela Sparks

Shriners is a great organization. I'm very grateful to them for their help. My son has gone here for years now and we long almost everything about it. The surgeons, radiology, and pops dept are wonderful, helpful people and Dr's and I cannot say good enough things about them. Only complaint is the security / front desk is extremely rude and unhelpful every time I come here for 16 years now. I really can't stand the attitude I get every time we walk into the hospital. By far the worst part of the experience. They make me and my child feel like a burden.

  • jacqueline hasbrouck

I was a patient here when I was 10 yrs old. I am a polio survivor and now am 67 yrs young. I was here for a series of surgeries over several separate stays. My memories are of a doctor coleman who had the bedside manner of a snake!! He did rounds with his students, while leaving us patients stripped naked in front of everyone. He used us for experiments. I still have night terrors about this place. I could fill several pages of the things is experienced and saw. My only hope is that because of these kids and myself some good was accomplished.

  • Jake Hansen (Statefarm)

My wife Ember has osteogenesis imperfecta type 5 they were amazing when she was growing up since then now that we have our son with the same condition he's several months old and they won't even contact us we've had to reach out to them and only successfully once just for them to say they'll call back I guess my son Aiden's life doesn't matter as much as others in their eyes sounds like this so called non profit needs to be shut down they're just taking money and charging patients at this point

Shriners Hospital for children has been an answer to our prayers! The staff of outpatient occupational, physical, and speech therapy and the brace department have helped our daughter in ways that no one else could. They have taken a special interest in her and in our family. We always feel welcome and cared for. Because of Shriners our daughter has found her ability to move, her voice, and can preform most activities of daily living independently. We can never thank them enough!

  • Anime

Without this hospital I dont know where or how I would have been able to provide my chikd with the care and devices hes needed. The staff are loving and genuine. Ive never met anyone there who treat it like just a job. Ive been taking my child there for 10 years and still see the same people. My child also gets to meet other children like them and knows that there are other kids just like them. It helps build confidence and bonding with others for my child.

  • Easton Moosman

I’m Easton Moosman and I’ve been going to Shriners since I was 9 months old, when I got my foot amputated. I’ve had multiple surgery’s since, all of them went great. They’ve made all of my prosthetics and whenever something was wrong they fixed it. They’ve even made me a fin leg, because I love to swim! They have a big room on top that has toys, basketball, ping pong and much more. I love Shriners and want to say thank you so much for all you do!

  • Heidi Jacobson

Used to think this place was amazing. After today I am not so sure. I get policies and guidelines but shouldn't care come first? I even talked to a "Care Specialist" about my son situation and after speaking with her, I feel that title is miss leading. Not only was she not sympathic, she suggested to go elsewhere. My son need his wheelchair looked at so he doesn't have to continue to struggle to use it, did realize that asking for too much.

  • W H

We are very thankful for your hospital. All of you, even the personal who cleans are kind. Your nurses are a blessing to us and very involved in our daughter's care. We are so thankful for Dr. Hennessey and her kind care to our daughter. Physical therapy is top of the line, Mr Wade is very helpful and and orthotics is a sweet team. Truly the whole hospital team is a blessing. Thank you for your service to so many. GOD BLESS YOU!

  • Jen Southwick

Dr.Carroll treated our daughters developmental hip dysplasia and was hand down the best physician we’ve ever worked with! The staff at the hospital were always kind and patient, they treated our daughter like she was the only person that had to care for and took phenomenal care of her and made sure as parents we were comfortable too. I’d recommend Shriners to anyone that’s needing orthopedic care for their child.

  • Ashley Pedersen

Shriners is an amazing resource and offers amazing care for our daughter. We use them for all of our orthopedic care including, casting, bracing, physical and occupational therapy. Their wheelchair shop is amazing for ordering wheelchairs, but also overseeing all the maintenance. They are also amazing at helping us find and build community within our disability group. We love Shriners!

They helped our daughter with her prosthetic due to amniotic banding. The staff were absolutely amazing! I have never met people in the medical industry who were so kind, concerned, and helpful. The facility was beautiful and was obviously geared to create a welcoming experience. Simply put- they are the best! If you want to see charity in action- check them out!

I can't say enough wonderful things about Shriners and the staff here. My daughter has been a patient for the last 15 years and we are treated like family every time. There aren't enough words to thank the surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, doctors, and all the staff for everything they have done for my daughter and family. The care exceeds expectations.

They are willing to help in any way they can, and we were able to benefit today from that caring and outstanding service that I have only encountered here at Shriners!

Shriners Hospital for Children is an amazing place. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, and work well with kids. Shriners only charges families within their ability to pay, providing lots of charity care for those who wouldn't otherwise be able to afford medical treatment. It has changed my life.

My son is now using Shriners Hospital. Such a difference from Childrens Hospital. Nothing compares to the level of care, compassion and quality as Shriners provides. If you have a child that needs care please try Shriners. Best thing I ever did was switching care providers.

  • Tracy Smith

My daughter has been a patient of Shriner's Hospitals for Children since she was an infant. They have performed multiple surgeries on her hands and continue to follow her for her scoliosis and other orthopedic issues. Wonderful place to get the care she needs!

Took my 13-year-old to Shriners in SLC in the summer of 2020 to get his knees checked. Total cost for x-rays and a routine office visit with a doctor was $914.00, charged to me and my insurance. Expert care, but it comes at a premium price.
