late Christmas shopping and ran out of time to order a book I wanted to gift a friend. I called skylight and the person on the other line was very friendly and found the 1 and only copy left. It retailed for $40 but was $23 online. I know small bookstores barely get by but I asked about some sort of price match anyways and the man said they couldn’t go as low as the online price but would give a discount. A few hours later I came to pick up the book and told the woman at the counter what I had asked and what I was told. She was rude, short, unhelpful, and made it seem as though I had made it all up in the first place. I went out of my way to go to this bookstore specifically because of the good customer service earlier and the better pricing. If I wasn’t short on time I wouldn’t have purchased anything from Skylight simply because of her bad vibe. It’s a nice looking bookstore but I won’t be going back. There are much more welcoming places that hire people that love literature and aren’t just there to be in Los Feliz and get a check.

Skylight Books is one of the greatest bookstores ever... and as the greater L.A. area loses some other all time favorite bookstores that reality makes Skylight Books even more valuable. Even though I'm a native Angeleno who's lived here for 56 years I'm incredible passionate about everything L.A. Things such as it's history, cultures, entertainment industry, myths, legends, etc are things about that I'll never tire learning about. Skylight Books has always had a great selection about L.A./ So Cal and they stock both newer and older books. The store itself is pleasantly setup and a fun journey to browse through. It's one of those places that has books of such variety that even when you arent looking for anything particular you'll find something that you didnt realize you need to read tonight. Please come out and support this wonderful business. It's a true gem not only of Silver Lake but of Los Angeles.

This is one of the finest bookstores in LA period. I got Angry Youth Comix by Johnny Ryan on sale.. where its OG price was 50$, they had it for 20$. This I got from Skylight Book, then they have Skylight Books Arts Annex which is what wet dreams for Comic Books/Graphic Novel lovers are made up of. I was planning on buying only one for the day however their collection was soo good that I ended up purchasing two more with a super cool Skylight Books Tote Bag. Ram is a very warm hearted and super enthusiastic as well as a polite person to help you with looking for what you want. He suggested some solid picks for me to get for my comic book collection and I did bought them. If you're looking for a place where you would be looking for what you always wanted to buy for yourself, this is that spot. Get it for yourself or your loved ones or your friends to gift em. You won't be disappointed.

Skylight offers the perfect experience when it comes to local bookshops. Staff is always knowledgable, offers are interesting even with a price higher than Amazon (after all, physical shops will always have that handicap). I particularly love the Staff Picks and have followed their advice several times. Never regret. The Art/Geek annex is equally great. Skylight is a great fit for Los Feliz's population of entertainment people. There are many Author Events on the main space and you can find offers for the Indie Bookshop Day once a year, but queue up early if you want to make sure you get what you want. Kids section is bigger than the Sci-Fi, for example, so you can find enough great books for the little ones. If you are visiting, make sure to stop by! Anyway, great space.

It's kind of a bookworm's dream. It reminded me of a slightly messy, very cramped library. That's how it smells - like a library. There are old books, new books, and everything in between and you can get it all for much cheaper than Skylight Books. I had a $30 gift card, which at Skylight Books would be two paperbacks, but here I had a hard time coming up with enough stuff to cover it! I've always loved used book stores, but this was kind of ridiculous. Everything I wanted was $3 - $6, so even with the $5.50 to take the subway down to Union Square and back up to Columbia, the prices were still considerably cheaper than Skylight Books or even my beloved Book Culture. I love this store, but I just wish it wasn't so crowded all the time!

  • Bradford Hastreiter

Highly concentrated ridiculousness. I had an awful first experience... Entered the door and was talking in a hushed voice then shushed anyways by the bookseller. There was a monthly politics book discussiion group on and was repulsed to here an obviously poorly educated straight girl putting down transgendered people's gender position (trust me, by the looks I exchanged with other customers while that genius was speaking, she was definitely wearing no clothes). then went to the health section, which is more like a couple of shelves, and not worth your time if you are interested in the subject. Wont be back... Sorry... steeped to strong for me

I recently moved to the Midwest and needed to buy my friends in LA a wedding gift. I always try to avoid Amazon, so I searched for an LA independent book store that I could order online from. Skylight’s website was easy to work with. Even better was that I was personally emailed by a real person who thanked me for the order, and offered to gift wrap the books as a complimentary service. That alone is worth paying full price for books plus shipping. I’m happy knowing my money went to a place that fosters community and human connection.

  • Paul L. Munoz

Every time I visit the place, I mostly get a cold reception unlike having one at a Dwell in Design event a few years ago in the LA Convention Center. Anyway, the annex has some great coffee-table books & graphic novels & the main store carrying a few mainstream & some radical & underground materials, but the business pales in comparison to the recognized quality-brand establishments such as Barnes & Noble as well as Taschen, Assouline & Amazon Books (recently set up in Century City).

  • Michael Andreen

My vote for best bookshop in LA. Of course I found the new book my British wife wanted about football. It in no way caters to the balkanisation of reading by limiting itself to a particular attitude or community. That said, it is a community hub for Los Feliz and greater Los Angeles, but it does so by somehow representing the range of what's being written and thought, in a rather confined space. Graphic novel and fine art annex next door also merits this high mark.

  • Ross Blocher

Skylight Books is a relatively small shop, but the use of space is smart, intentional and well-designed. Each time I come in, I am delighted to find new books I’d love to read, as well as some of my top picks in each category. The staff is dedicated and helpful, and also do a great job of highlighting local authors and bringing them in for talks and signings (as seen in this recent conversation with Mallory O’Meara for her book “Girly Drinks”).

  • Vincent Aragon

This rating is for the personnel at the Annex who was just so disgruntled and looked so miserable that he was working, that I just left and didn't want to be saturated with his apathetic energy. I was attempting to follow up on order of books that was being mailed and being a new member almost makes me what to rescind my membership. I should have just bought the books at the OG location up the street, which I usually do. Lesson learned.

  • Christopher Rountree

I’m a member at Skylight. One of my favorite places in LA. Before birthdays and holidays I’m always here. The level of guilt I’ve got about missing all (almost all at least) of their incredible series of readings and book openings. Their poetry and local poet section is wonderful. And at XMAS they wrap my presents for me — and I’m terrible at wrapping, so, wow, yeah that’s helpful. Also did I mention obscure books on cacti.

  • Michah Harrison

A very well curated and maintained bookstore. Always current best sellers lists as well as staff recommendations. It's a little too easy to find great books in this store, hard to leave without picking up a few extras. They also have a great art book selection just a few doors down on the same street. Parking can be difficult in the immediate area, but there is plenty of neighborhood parking just a short walk away.

  • Michael Allaway

Incapable employees who complain about their job, roll their eyes and scoff at customer questions work here. A local gem for their unique selection on LA Fiction, Philosophy, and other smaller genres, this place is great for ideas of what's out there. But I'm still trying to understand why they wouldn't take a $20 bill for a $16.99 book, especially after browsing for half an hour. Amazon wins.

  • Carlo N.

Skylight Books is a bookstore along Vermont ave and Franklin ave. The store is small however they have great book selection on their shelves; they're arranged according to category. The best part is the tree at the center of the bookstore, where you can seat and read. Prices are fair. Staff are friendly and professional. Overall, it is a good bookstore to buy a book and/or hangout or read.

  • Rob Devlin

MEGA AMAZING book and mags store - definitely the best one I found in LA with a massive selection of all of your favourite titles. The surrounding area in Los Feliz is jam packed with cool coffee shops/bars/restaurants/cinemas and general vibes. Barnsdall Art Park is a short stroll and the ideal place to migrate too with a huge wad of mags to sit read and enjoy the mind blowing views of the city!

  • David Schmidt

This is the only place I'd risk going over the allotted time on my parking meter ticket and getting a fine. I even factor in the potential parking fine into my budget while at the store. True story. A bookstore's used book section tells you everything you need to know about the character of the city. And you'll never find anything close to the selection here.

  • Abraham Abel

Between the two stores, there was a decent selection of categories and books. What was extremely disappointing was the piped-in music in the larger of the two stores. I can only handle a small selection of Rap music. What was being played was that type where the artist uses derogatory lyrics especially toward women. It was distracting and offensive.

  • Ashley Weinberger

I love this place so much. Between here and the art annex, I could absolutely kill several hours and still want to hang out inside. One of the best horror selections I’ve seen in a bookstore I’m a while that doesn’t rely too heavily on Stephen King. Additionally, they have an excellent list of author discussions/talks and other literary events.

  • Colin Fields

Just first impressions, but seemed like a bookstore for reading enthusiasts rather than a place to post on instagram. Had a great discussion with one of the workers there who was all too happy to spend 30 minutes with me to give his best/favorite recommendations for the genre fiction I was looking for. I will definitely be coming back here

  • Skies

This shop is a spacious book lover's dream. They seem to hold a lot of local events here, but they also had so much to pick from with a wide variety in almost every genre. I picked myself up some small poetry chapbooks and a few pieces of stationery, but if I didn't have a small suitcase to pack I probably would have bought way more!!

  • Fatima Lemus

Placed my order online 4 days before Christmas and didn't expect it to be ready for pick up before the 25th. It was a nice surprise to have it ready fast especially because they were out of stock on a couple of books. They have a great pick up system and didn't wait very long. I love shopping small and contributing to local community!

  • Holly Slocum

A fun, quirky bookstore! We heard Wallace Shawn read from his book, “Night Thoughts”. There was a full crowd and Mr Shawn was hilarious and thoughtful at the same time. Naturally, we purchased several books (his and others) from their varied selection. Fun neighborhood to walk in and close by restaurants looked great. We’ll be back!

  • Daniel Garcia

Because periodicals, magazines, information curated for you and your passions via print is rare and needs distribution. Here we are all equal, whatever drives you, makes you special, they will connect you with others who wrote about it, shot photos of it and will keep you from feeling alone at night. When you are alone at night.

  • Won Kim

Good neighborhood bookstore. Love the sections on culture and social issues, and the karge selection of indie graphic novels. My only issue is that I wish the selection of Buddhist books was a bit wider, and included books representing the South Asian traditions (East Asian and Tibetan traditions were well represented).

  • Maria Southard

Take a look inside! A lovely place to find reading material and to pass the time. Clean and aesthetically pleasingly arranged excellently arranged myriad of books, including for children. Reading accessories, calendars and knickknacks. Lovely large tree in the middle adding to the restful, yet intellectual vibes.

  • Janet Kim

This is a fantastic independent bookstore with a great selection of everything from magazines to children's books to coffee table books. The store hosts many events and is a wonderful place to browse and buy gifts. I've been shopping here for over a decade, and it is definitely one of the best stores in the area.

  • Brian Marks

Great selection, well curated, extremely knowledgeable and helpful booksellers. The annex a few doors down has an excellent selection of art books, film writing and graphic novels, along with magazines. The store also has great talks and readings from prominent writers. One of the best bookstores in Los Angeles

  • Mina Delgado

Very small..tight..not good for scooter or wheelchair. My last visit was 6 mos ago..may be changes. Book selection is specialty books mostly urban, hipster, LGBT friendly, astrology and culinary and travel fare. Journal and letter writing materials. Comparable prices..slightly higher. In and out in 30.

  • Laura Hauther

The best bookstore in L.A., hands down. The bookstore staff are readers and writers, they really know their stuff. The also have a "Friends with Benefits" club for discounts on current books and recently added a First Editions Book club. If you live in LA and love books, Skylight is the place for you.

  • California 73

I was here for a Q & A with a writer that covers zombie apocalypse and outbreak narratives; it was a quaint bookstore that gave the event an intimate cozy charm. The book store clerks were friendly and the neighborhood was safe with lots of little restaurants and shops to keep you busy on a weekend!

  • Dave G

Great local bookstore used to be semi regular at their events pre pandemic. Needed some books as xmas presents ordered on-line and picked up 2 days later. Support local businesses. 12/21 There is road work happening nearby. Be prepared for an extra 10-15 minutes to park and get to the store

  • John Carter

Great for people who love to read. It's a cool place even if you're not super into reading too. Love the decorations and the vibe. They have a lot of small artisan shops inside to explore as well. You can purchase many different items ranging from paintings to metal art

  • Rahul Mitra

Great service at a fair price. Exactly the kind of brick-and-mortar book store that should be supported. You can buy from Amazon (and I do that as well) but when a store is as well run as this they provide you with wonderful new discoveries and great recommendations

  • Tom Shahriari

Meh. Decent book store. Very popular with locals, my daughter included, but I wasn't all that impressed. Cramped, but not quaint. Not very well laid out. Mediocre selection. High prices. Pathetic seating. Still any place you can browse books gets at least 3 stara

  • Maeda Humbert

Excellent book shop. So hard to find these days. Wonderful service " with a smile". Amazing children's book selection. We grew up shopping at Maple Street Books in New Orleans. This is huge by comparison but the wonderful eclectic vibe is alive and well.

  • Joshua Williams

If you're looking for anything art-related, come straight to this side of Skylight Books. If they don't seem to have what you're looking for, feel free to ask and the staff will readily look up the book or publication to see if they can order it for you.

  • Ted Gideonse

One of the two or three best bookstores in Los Angeles, it's got an amazingly well curated collection of books, fantastic recommendations form staff, and an art book annex that is truly inspiring. Also, their membership club provides amazing discounts.

  • Laura

It’s such a great bookstore with so so many books. There’s a whole other building for art/manga/comedy/etc so if you’re wondering why you can’t find those in the main building, that’s why. The staff is super friendly and happy to assist if you need it!

  • Brooke Powell

Awesome resource, great selection! Note: there are two different skylight books very close to each other...one is small and mostly magazines and art books. The other one has more stuff. Hope I come back and spend a bunch of money here soon.

  • Scott Little

Agnes helped pull some book ideas/recommendations for a gift for my mom, and she blew me away with terrific suggestions. Her love of books and depth of knowledge of authors is incredible. Skylight is lucky to have her! Love this bookstore!

  • Shagane Barsegian

Worth visiting, driving and hanging out at as a couple or family. Enjoyed the variety of books and atmosphere. Wish there was just more space in the kids section so you can read with kids and kids had sit down space to look through books.

  • Maria Dunton

Ordered online and had very easy experience. Communication from bookstore regarding order status was excellent and book arrived sooner than expected. Thank you for making my holiday shopping so simple. Now I just need to visit in person!

  • Natalie Estrada

I like it because it's a small book store, but in the downside, they're very limited. Their books are much more expensive than Barnes and Noble. If you like little book stores then this is it, but it's a little bit more expensive.

  • Bijun Liang

i particularly like the art book side of this bookstore. has a good collection of material for photography, graphic design, architecture, etc. there are some smaller zines by local artists. very fun to browse through all around

  • Lorena Salazar Zermeño

I have been visiting this bookstore since I was in undergrad. It is nice to know that some things don't change, and withstand the test of time. The staff is friendly, and helpful. My favorite place in LA for bound paper books.

  • tori holder

Awesome bookstore and local culture supporter. Be sure to check out their arts annex next door and go to some of their readings and events. Great selection of small press, independently published, zines, and local books too!

  • Barndi Kim

A local bookstore with big selection and stock, I love that I can NOT shop Amazon and have a local bookstore to shop at instead. They also sell cards and little things to give as gifts. Helpful staff, meter street parking.

  • Scott Noon Creley

One of the best book stores in California. This place and the associated art book store have an amazing selection. The poetry section is extensive and features a huge range of work, which is a rarity in many bookstores.

  • Jordan Angulo

Great local book shop, their art annex is also good to check out. Lots of stuff to browse and staff picks seem to be very on top of current events and culture. Attend an author talk or event here when you can

  • Naomi Klaus

Favorite bookstore in LA. Awesome collection of the most up to date political science, theory, art, culture and fiction books. I could get lost in this place for hours. Super cool, friendly, eccentric staff.

  • Michael Lehrman

One of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. Good selection across many genres. They hold author events often, and the staff is friendly. Sometimes I’ll spot a friendly cat that seems to live there as well.

  • Elizabeth Modesto

Books were organized by genre, however were not alphabetical. This made looking for desired books near impossible. When asked for clarity on how books were organized we were told “that’s a good question.”

  • Virginia Green

Loved that they support union. However, walked in today and wasn’t greeted. Then one of the personnel walked past me and looked at me like I was trash, but greeted a guy and his pet. I walked right out.

  • Julianne Zuccardi

My favorite bookstore to peruse.and patron. Also love their next-door comic book, zinr, and magazine store. With so many comic book places going the way of the do-do I'm glad this one is still kicking.

  • Kyle Hunsberger

Great little bookstore on Vermont. Staff was very friendly and had a small but unique selection of books. Will definitely come back again particularly next time I'm in it's very walkable neighborhood.

  • V. Gilmore

One of the best bookstores in Los Angeles! Don’t be fooled by the small size. They have a very large selection. I love the staff recommendations shelf! And if you become a member, you get a discount.

  • Jake Grubman

This shop is legit. It's bright and well organized, and it feels like it has the right book for everyone. I especially liked the full shelf of new translated literature near the front of the shop.

  • Jonah Morris

One of my favorite bookstores in LA. Definitely has the kitschy gift / trinket section most bookstores today have but looking past that, their selection and staff recommendations are excellent.

  • David Kavin

I almost exclusively go to their annex for the graphic novel section. While a lot of the inventory can be found other places they ALWAYS have books I've never seen anywhere and that's exciting.

  • Nash Holcomb

An awesome bookstore with an excellent selection of books, ranging from old literature classics to contemporary politically anti-establishment/radical content. Definitely worth checking out!

  • Cai W (he/they)

Came here for Lisa Hanawalt's book signing ! Such a cool little store, with an awesome skylight to live up to its name! Bought some other graphic novels there, they have a nice selection.

Awesome local bookstore in Los Feliz!! They have a good selection of books. The staff is super kind and helpful. They also do. a really good job of limiting capacity during covid.

  • Wayne Edwards

A very cool bookstore in Los Feliz that I never heard of before. Not too big and not too small. Lots of character. Just right for special events like the reading I went to.

  • Memory Collector

Probably the only bookstore where I never left with empty hands. A few left place to find independent magazines around the world. Hope you survive. I will do my best.
