St Martin-in-the-Fields is a Church of England parish church at the north-east corner of Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, London. It is dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours. There has been a church on the site since at least the medieval period. It was at that time located in the farmlands and fields beyond the London wall, when it was awarded to Westminster Abbey for oversight. It became a principal parish church west of the old City in the early modern period as Westminster's population grew. When its medieval and Jacobean structure was found to be near failure, the present building was constructed in an influential neoclassical design by James Gibbs in 1722–1726. The church is one of the visual anchors adding to the open-urban space around Trafalgar Square. Twelve historic bells from St Martin-in-the-Fields, cast in 1725, are included in the peal of the Swan Bells tower in Perth, Australia. The current set of twelve bells, cast in 1988, which replaced the old ones are rung every Sunday between 9 am and 10 am by the St Martin in the Fields Band of Bell Ringers. The bells are also rung by the Friends of Dorothy Society each year as part of London Pride. Being in a prominent central London location, the exterior of the church building frequently appears in films, including Notting Hill and Enigma, and television programmes, including Doctor Who and Sherlock. The church has a close relationship with the Royal Family, whose parish church it is, as well as with 10 Downing Street and the Admiralty. The church established its own almhouses and pension-charity on 21 September 1886. The 19 church trustees administered almshouses for women and provided them with a weekly stipend. The almshouses were built in 1818, in Bayham Street (to a design by Henry Hake Seward), on part of the parish burial ground in Camden Town and St Pancras and replaced those constructed in 1683. The St Martin-in-the-Fields charity supports homeless and vulnerably housed people. The church has raised money for vulnerable people in its annual Christmas Appeal since 1920 and in an annual BBC radio broadcast since December 1927. The Connection at St Martin's is located next to the church, and works closely with the church's charity. It supports 4000 homeless people in London each year, by providing accommodation, medical and dental care, skills training, and creative activities. The church has a close relationship with the Royal Family, whose parish church it is, as well as with 10 Downing Street and the Admiralty.

St Martin In the field is located in the north east corner of Trafalgar Square. The closest underground stations are Charing cross and Leicester Square. Bus routes include; 3,6,9,11,12,13,15,23,24,29,53,87,88,91,139,159,176,453. If you are driving to St Martin please note the church is located within the Congestion Charging Zone. There is no parking on site but passengers can be dropped off at the adjacent Duncannon Street. St Martin In the field church can be entered using the steps in front of the church or via a ramp on the North side of the church. The Crypt can be accessed through a lift in the church and a glass entrance pavilion using the steps or a lift. St Martin In the field church only accept Contactless or Card payments in the Cafe,shop or Box Office. This is to help minimalise the potential spread of COVID through contact with cash. Most areas of St Martin have step free access. They also have a range of facilities to aid visitors with disabilities. Toilets suitable for wheelchair users and visitors with Buggies as well as Baby changing facilities are located in the Cafe, Crypt & Meeting Room area during opening hours. Guide Dogs are welcome and water is provided. Outstanding music and artists enrich the cultural life at the church with a series of outstanding classical concerts, Crypt lates (Jazz,Soul & Folk) Candlelight and Lunchtime Concerts along with popular Crypt Café,Gift shop & Lecture series. They also offer choral music and Artist development programs and there are opportunities to perform at St Martin,book a rehearsal space and join the Music Patrons Circle.

St. Martin in the field is one of the first places we think of when considering chamber ensembles in London. This is an important historic building and landmark in the city and a world famous venue for classical concerts. The church is also well located at Trafalgar Square, a place most visitors will eventually find themselves at some point in their visit to London. These days you can reserve tickets to performances online or you can simply visit their box office at the church itself. Concerts are not expensive and usually run no more than an hour and a half. If you visit during lunch, you can even sit in on free lunchtime concerts (Last time we visited, suggested donation was £3.50 per person). If you are around London during early December, you can catch the St. Martin choir leading Christmas carols at the first lighting of the tree in Trafalgar Square. This is always a nice activity to see and participate in. It really sets the mood for the rest of the month to be a jolly and festive time. In the end, we highly recommend visits to the famous St. Martin in the Field church when spending time at Trafalgar Square and encourage those interested in chamber music to consider attending a concert here during their trip to London.

Fabulous venue with wonderful acoustic sound, accessible by taking tube to Charing Cross. Booking online for any concert or event is easy where tickets are emailed, once choice of seat in halls, galley or gallery have been made. Decor within St. Martins is beautifully maintained. Visited venue several times for Baroque concert by candlelight & had hoped to book for Piano version, where Beethoven's 5th Concerto (The Emperor) due to be performed, although fully booked . The venue has Crypt restaurant below in basement, accessible by stairs or lift (suitable for wheelchair users) including toilets. Previously, customers could pre-order interval drinks & have them within the Crypt, however this was not accessible during recent visit & drinks offered on ground floor entrance of venue, which were of limited choice. Toilets were also not accessible & customers asked to exit venue & enter part of the Crypt, only to be misinformed, as several of the "alternative" toilets all locked!! This was remedied by a member of staff allowing customers access to Crypt toilets. Not very professional & marred the evening hence 3*.

I have passed by it hundred of times and recently I visited a section of it with my lovely cousin a few days ago. St. Martin-in-the-Fields church dates back to 1222 (Norman times) , but the current building was actually completed in 1726. A cool “hidden” (not really hidden lol) crypt cafe where we felt like transporting back in time. A little creepy feeling but once I entered it quickly disappeared. Interesting place to sit down, chat and relax while enjoying a nice and expensive cup of coffee under a unique crypt setting. The church is named after St. Martin of Tours, a 4th-century bishop known for his charity work. Hence the rich association of the church with charitable work. If you wonder why “in-the-Fields” part of the name. Well it is all because during its medieval all this was a countryside area just outside the city of London. The name “in-the-Fields” remains as a historical reference. BEAUTIFUL CHILLY DAY TO ENJOY LONDON EMBRACE THE WEATHER ♥️

My first visit to your Autumn Lecture series was truly inspiring. Ken Loach spoke of his journey through life and his remarkable career making films (1963 - 2023) about ordinary people and the struggles of homelessness, racism, unemployment ... the battles faced to access help getting accommodation and any financial support. The prejudice and cruelty metered out to poor citizens was incredulous! The film clips were astonishing ... sadly these films tell the story of today! To also hear about the media's censorship power in deciding what can or can't be shown on TV, in film or on the radio is shocking! I left the Chuch feeling inspired by this amazing man, Ken Loach! The big question is "How do the 'little people' move forward to change from the status quo?" Thank you for all the great things you are doing at Martins in the Fields. Mrs L Roberts

My first (and definitely not last) choral recital. This was an amazing way to spend a little time away from the hustle and bustle of central London. I was blown away with the atmosphere and the honesty of the singing. I am going to explore some more of this kind of music that has managed to escape me for the first 60 years of my life. The church is pretty impressive too. The main window looked like something Salvadore Dali would have come up with. Whilst waiting for proceedings to start there’s plenty of literature to explain the good work the church does. If the concert and the leaflets don’t get you donating I’d be amazed. An absolute MUST visit when you are in the area

What a brilliant night, Cabaret Musical Night. The singers were just amazing, such beautiful Voices. Each and every one of them. Goosebumps we all had. The company, the people, was just an Epic night. With many more shows to come throughout the summer, I'm sure it will be a sell-out. Tonight kicked off the summer vibes of the love of musicals and singing. If you love musicals and singing, then just go ahead and buy a ticket. The drinks and food were just delicious. The 4 of us really had the best night. Look forward to oncoming shows, a first of many more. The Crypt was just beautiful look forward to going again to attend the many more shows on offer.

Strategically located in Trafalgar Square, it’s a small Neó-classical building with historical attribution to the 13th century. Then there was a re-build by Henry VIII, torn down around/after James I, and then this current building erected during George I’s reign. It’s a simple structure but has been in use since it’s erecting in 1726. Today, it is most famous for its lunch time concerts. And it has billed itself as “church of the ever open door”. A uniquely modern take is a restaurant in its crypt.

This church is probably best known for it's prominent location in London situated right across from Trafalgar Square and the National Portrait Gallery as well has being only 10 minutes walk from Leicester Square. It's supposed to be the parish church of the royal family, making it another draw. There's a lot of history related to the church dating all the way back to Roman times, so it's worth taking the guided tour. The cafe is also interesting, as it's location in the church crypt. I especially liked the clear glass window with it's peculiarly shaped mullions behind the alter.

I enjoyed a most unique experience at St. Martin-in-the-Fields when I decided on a whim to try the brass rubbing. I had just had a nice lunch at Cafe in the Crypt and the brass plates on display outside of the cafe caught my eye. I soon realized that I could make my own brass rubbing off a plate. There were several dozen to choose from, at different price points depending on size and complexity. A very pleasant young lady at the gift shop assisted me, and then carefully wrapped my brass rubbing when I had completed it. A truly unique souvenir of my visit to London.

Visited for a Crypt Lates performance on Saturday. What a great venue, the crypt was constructed in the mid 1700s and is a vibrant mix of the old and new. Great acoustics, well organised seating and good facilities. A simple reasonably priced menu is available and foid arrives at your table quickly. There is a bar and again the service was good. The Denmark St Big Band provided the music which was also great. So all in all a good night with great music in a really special venue.

St. Martin-in-the-Fields with Neoclassical design by James Gibbs and completed in 1726 is a very famous landmark with quite a history to read about and experience directly when visiting Trafalgar Square …the church is a very prominent feature in the expansive Trafalgar Square area..there are many concerts that are performed at this very special church location…as one enters this historical church site , the rich history back to the medieval period can be reflected upon…there is a courtyard behind the church that has a cafe providing a relaxing experience…

Went in for coffee and snack pre-theatre. Wednesday two weeks before Christmas. We had two children (4y/o and 3 months) easy to find a table. Chocolate coated flapjack, coffee and walnut sponge, latte and pot of tea. Very reasonable and you know the profit all gets ploughed back into the charity. The barista saw we had the 4y/o and even added marshmallows and chocolate to the babycino. Lovely touch.

Visited recently for an immersive exhibition: Space, The Universe, and Everything. I have to be honest and say that I was slightly underwhelmed, and was definitely expecting more than what was on display. The website said the whole experience would take 1hr, but you could realistically be in and out in around 20 minutes! The final part of the exhibition - the projections, set to bespoke music within the church, were definitely the highlight, and were truly beautiful.

I went to one of the Bach Christmas Oratorio by candlelight and it was absolutely beautiful to see the church lit up on this way. What a wonderful atmosphere and such talented singers. I couldn't take any photos during the concert, obviously, but I took a few just after. Such a beautiful place, will definitely go back for one of the lunchtime concerts. The gift shop in the crypt downstairs is great as well- picked up a great book- definitely one to check out.

Beautiful church. I wanted to look inside but they were about to start services, and was shooed out by a parishioner. Never new any Christian, Hebrew, or Muslim service being secret or as unwelcoming as this was. Weird. Although they have hired security, it looks like they need to procure some sanitation or have bins available for all the trash about. Sad.

Because of time constraints we were here only for lunch in the crypt. The food is served cafeteria-style, with a wide assortment to meet any tastes. Of course, the food is not the main attraction here. The surroundings, including the gravestones in the floor, are fascinating and certainly add an atmosphere not found in a normal lunch setting. Highly recommended.

Still elevated to the clouds of joy and mesmerized by the incredible talent of The Baroque Chamber Orchestra of London. Incredible performance on this Friday after Thanksgiving in St-Martin-in-the-Fields. We had front row seats. The intensity of the cellist and the top violinist will stay with me forever. Bravo a thousand times. Must must MUST experience.

I used to come here a lot when I first moved to London for my master's degree in the early 1990s (they were just adding the glass lift at the front!). But I haven't actually been in about 15 years. I recently discovered that it's still magical! A couple of Sundays ago I went to a performance of Choral Classics at 3pm Sunday. The 6 singers filled every corner with their wonderful sound for an hour's long performance. And, It was free!

What a beautiful place to visit. Such friendly and helpful staff/volunteers. I managed to get here just in Time for evening prayer, I was handed a bible with the correct passages already selected out for me. Wonderful prayers given. Was able to light a candle here. And sign the book for the late queen. Beautiful architecture. Such a humble place, busy but peaceful. Evening prayer lasted about 15 minutes at 4 o'clock Saturday.

Terrible as classical concert venue - attended Tenebrae choral concert in July. The pews were uncomfortable and very tight squeeze. Profiteering means that they put 12 people in a row which should sit at most 10. We had an obese person in our row which meant very tight squeeze for the rest of us. They hire out cushions but the seat squeeze and length of pew meant that it was not possible for everyone to put down a cushion.

Went to their light show. £10 for about 15 mins, but you could stay longer in the Chapel if you wanted to re watch the light projection. The light projection was very good. Staff were everywhere, directing and always on hand to help. Shame it was only on for a few days, I found out about it through their Facebook advert. I was expecting more, but thats maybe because I was comparing it to other similar events I've been to.

Squidged into the northern corner of Trafalgar Square, with a compromised view of the magnificent frontage, and dominated by the bulk of the National Gallery. This is nonetheless one of the great renaissance churches of London. I’ve been fortunate enough to attend two concerts here, both were wonderful musical experiences - the Requiems by Fauré and Mozart. The Crypt is the setting for a decent cafe with a cloister vibe.

We got tickets for one of their candlelight concerts during summer time and it was brilliant. The concert lasted for 1 hour and it felt quite unique, the Vivaldi/Handel and Bach music was tremendously well played and the atmosphere was just excellent to enjoy a different evening in one of Londons most emblematic churches

This beautiful church is a real gem and I love the feeling I get when I walk in from busy Trafalgar Square..... just absolute peace! Downstairs (in the crypt) is a great stop for lunch, with lots of seating and a good choice of hot/cold food and drinks, all reasonably priced (for London) they also have an interesting gift shop with a great selection of gifts to choose from.

Very convenient to access as it's locating in central London. I joined the Sunday service in the morning. I felt welcomed and the worshipping hall was clean and well-kept. I was surprised to find an underground cafe there. I bought some small gifts at the gift shop next to the cafe.

A surprising find from a building you walk past every time you visit Trafalgar Square. An amazing building in itself with great use of its historic catacombs, now a quality cafe and music venue. Definitely worth a visit both historically or for a rest and rehydration stop.

Great wheelchair access & helpful friendly staff who let me charge my wheelchair. Staff were efficient at clearing tables but I didn't feel rushed. I had a hot drink & slice of cake which were good quality but more than I am used to paying. There was a disabled toilet.

Concerts are a little special here. The church itself is over granduer with a basic structure of puritanism. The distinct far window is to behold is this the entrance to a portal. Candlelight concerts are not just candlelit, but have candles shattered about.

A peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. We had an excellent lunch here in the crypt. Good food at a reasonable price, considering the location. Highly recommended.

Concerts here are very nice, though a lot of cheap seats are with very limited to no sight of the performance. Acoustic effect is very good for chamber music. If you get a chance to go see the performance here by London Concertante. They are brilliant!

Definitely visit St. Martin especially if it's for a concert. I recently came here to attend the Vivaldi Four Seasons by Candlelight concert. Absolutely beautiful!

Beautiful airy church upstairs, cozy cafe in the basement. They have a large gift shop with British themed gifts, a holiday shop, and a few religious items. The cafe and gift shop support the ministry of the church. It was a wonderful stop.

Loved! I attended a candlelit concert on a Friday night after dinner in the crypt. The concert was great, highly recommend! The cafe in the crypt is cool to checkout whether you eat there, or not. The food was good and reasonably priced.

Went for lunch in the Crypt. Excellent, helpful, kind service. Convivial atmosphere in lovely surroundings. Roast chicken was nice; vegetables were a bit like my old school dinners. £12.50 for chicken & veg lunch a fair price.

Listened to Handle’s Messiah there. The church is on Trafalgar Square, in the heart of London. Apparently lots of American churches are designed based on this one. Autistics were great. Down in the crypt there is a cool cafe.

Beautiful Roman Catholic church built in 1722. A neoclassic design. It sits alongside the famous landmarks of Trafalgar Square. Get there at the right time. It offers a quiet refuge from the outside mania of the square.

Always a lovely experience, lucked out with a piano concert while visiting. A must stop every time I'm in London. Be sure to head to the crypt to make your own brass rubbing as a souvenir.

Great cafe underground with amazing bricked roofs. Good standard drink and food available with self service.

Our favourite spot in London for classical concerts. The sounds in the church are absolutely mythical!

Went to listen to Vivaldi's four seasons. Was a lovely evening. Café in the crypt is also great.
