My grandmother is currently at St. Peter's 3rd floor, palliative care unit Unfortunately my grandmother was not able to get into a hospice they sent her here. 98% of staff should not be working here. They have zero compassion, they treat their patients with zero dignity. My grandmother is 95 with dementia full of cancer. I could not believe the absolute rudeness most of these nurses have not only to patients but to the patient's family members. I have been taking multiple trips from Ottawa down to Hamilton every second weekend to visit my grandmother. Every time within minutes of stepping into the room I either go to the desk or ring the bell as my grandmother will either need to be repositioned or diaper is full, that has obviously been ignored or unattended to for a long time. I was there for 4 hours the other day. Not one nurse came to check on my grandmother, to make sure she ate her meals or even simply tried to give her a drink of water to make sure she is hydrated I questioned the nurses on several different occasions as to why she is not receiving proper medical attention and multiple other concerns from the care that she was receiving. She's at end of life and being treated with zero dignity. With a heavy heart, every day as I cannot be there all of the time, it really hurts my heart to think and imagine that my grandma is just laying there not receiving the proper care that she should be receiving especially at this point in life. There is just way too much to write in a post with all the wrong doing here, peer lack of respect and compassion I hope whoever is reading my review will take this seriously . If you're thinking about putting your loved one in St. Peter's care. Please think again and do whatever you can possible to make sure they go somewhere else. It has been gut wrenching experience and hurts my heart to know, every time I am there and especially when I leave that my grandma sits there hours upon end without any nurses attending to her needs or making sure that she is hydrated or even breathing. It's absolutely disgusting what I have witnessed. So I can't imagine when I'm not there what's going on Just before I left to come back to Ottawa the other day her bed sensor went off. It was going off for approximately 4 to 5 minutes and then I hit the handheld device for the emergency alarm to go off. After several minutes of nobody coming, I started videotaping and approximately 4 to 5 minutes after I started to video tape, approximately 7 to 8 minutes after total with the emergency alarms going off, nurses finally came into the room. She could have been choking she could have fell endless scenarios. It could have been a real bad emergency but without any nurses, Coming to check for several minutes is absolutely unacceptable. This hospital should be looked into there is no professionalism. Most of the nurses I find working on this unit are very young simply there for a paycheck please keep in mind this is NOT all the nurses. There was one nurse in particular that was amazing. Her name was Karen if they could all be like her would make this place so much better.

Terrible experience. My sister was admitted with terminal cancer. As POA I asked for a phone to be hooked up in her room in the case she was unable to keep her cell charged. At the nurse station they told me they would set up immediately but I would need to call admin the following day to arrange payment. Thus was during the first evening she was there. I tried calling after leaving, no answer. I tried calling in the morning, no answer. I went to visit and discovered no phone in her room and the day nurse told me that the night nurse was mistaken and I was not required to pay and no idea why they did not hook up the phone. The next day my sister waited over 30 minutes after ringing a nurse to help her to the washroom, she couldn’t wait any longer and got out of bed, then she fell on her face causing a black eye and terrible face bruising. During another visit the nurse came in to help my sister with her meal…she saw I was there and literally threw a bib at me and said “ out this in her and feed her, I am too busy for this” I complained to the front desk and later overheard them complaining about my complaint. My sister passed away and no one was called, we only found out when calling in to check on her. Many other attitude issues from the staff, not a pleasant experience, unprofessional and condescending

Took me a couple of years to write this..My family and I did not have a good experience. We had to request that a couple of nurses stay out of my mother's room. My Aunt and Niece experienced roughness and ignorance and asked that the nurse never come back. They left her on the toilet for ages unable to get off herself..I know she was not happy to be there but when someone is dying it doesn't matter what mood she is in..compassion and kindness should always be there..some of those nurses should not be working with vulnerable people..hate to think what it would have been like if we weren't there all the time..such a bad experience..I try not to think about my poor mum and how it must have made her feel.

This hospital was very good at keeping my mom comfortable in her last days. The staff here the PSW's, Nurses, and Doctors were very kind, attentive, and great listeners when it came to my concerns about my mother's condition. The doctors always took their time out to talk with me, and explain in detail while having great empathy while explaining. The nurses were kind, and always willing to accommodate my mother when it came to her pain, and making her comfortable. The PSW's were always available and very kind. The atmosphere was very clean, quiet, and professional. I like to thank all the staff on 3 west that took care of my mother, and did their best to let her pass with dignity, and comfort.

Hello I was a patient of St Peters from December 2022 to February 23 2023. My sisters just told me over Christmas 2023, that the social worker Jackie Fox, the OT Sarah something and the PT Alison something, said I was Cognitively Deficient because I couldn’t count backward from 100 by 7. My sisters replied that I have 2 University Degrees and am fluently trilingual and would not have been able to count backwards from 100 by 7 even BEFORE my stroke! Only a neurologist, psychiatrist or neuropsychologist can diagnose someone as Cognitively Deficient and it takes many tests. I would NOT recommend St Peter’s rehabilitation hospital!

Caution - We sent my folks to go down to St Peters with regards to a dizzy spell my mother had. After a 2.5 hour interview, both my parents walked out with a (mis)diagnosis of dementia and both had their licenses taken away. In discussing with my father - the Doc didn't tell him he was evaluating him and didn't let him finish his answers before cutting dad off with the next question. Now we have to go and get them re-evaluated -$800 each to get their licenses back. NO discussion with the family - no discussion with the GP, and no answer on her dizziness! - rediculous! My father (now passed) has been here for a few months now, first for rehab and then for palliative care and I confirm that he absolutely could not receive the care, dignity, respect and love that he has received here at any other hospital in the world. I am eternally grateful for the nurses, doctors and staff here (2 West) who have been taking care of him selflessly in the twilight of his life ♥️ Ignore the poor reviews that you read here as some people will complain about anything without putting themselves in the shoes of the constantly stressed caregivers. Have a heart people.

The nursing staff were good with my mother for the most part but some were just ignorant. I think someone has signed something as they didn't listen to my mother when she was trying to tell them no more drugs as she wanted to gain control of herself at least for a short time I think but they just kept pumping it into her until she was sleeping 24/7. In general a terrible experience but some of the staff were really good with her and understanding.

St Peter’s has stolen my auntie dignity they chose to drug her instead of calling her family. They treat the elderly worst then people in jail, this place is nothing but a pharmaceutical cash cow. The doctors have zero care for anything but a pay cheque from there big pharma daddy... it's absolutely disgusting.. they spend no time actually looking at patients... just a glorified dope dealer.. hope they lose all rights to practice medicine..

I wrote a review earlier. My Mother passed away October 10th, at age 93. Her throat motor functions, and late-stage Dementia prevented any kind of physical recovery. The Literature states there are no drugs to reverse late-stage Alzheimer's. The brain damage (apparently) becomes too severe. I tried to help. Daily visits. Very Frustrating. The rating is not a reflection of St Peters; it's the "unfairness" of not being able to do anything.

Absolutely horrible care, bedside manner, spoke to one doctor who was so rude and claimed we waste their time because I’d like to see my loved one before they die. They don’t keep their word and won’t allow people to visit their loved ones here. Absolutely brutal. But don’t worry, if it’s only 48 hours until death, you can visit someone you love... if they happen to guess the right time frame. Brutal place. Horrible.

My father was admitted to St Peter's back on May 10th . He had 3 to six months to live. He passed away on Sept 6th. The dr's and nurses were fantastic. A special shout out to Dr Jordan and his nurse Dan on 3 west and the other nurses . They made what time he had left easlier for him. The staff treated him with dignity and respect and were there for him right to the end and my family thanks st Peter's for that

Our dearest mother passed away a week ago at St. Peters Hospital. Mom was on the third floor, West side. Dr. Nick, Dr. Jordan, nurse Amanda, nurse Dan, and all the other nurses and staff were absolutely wonderful and compassionate. Thank you for everything you did for mom and the family. We are forever grateful. Thank you for being a part of our mothers journey of life. God bless you all! ❤️

My family is so appreciative to the amazing staff on 3E for caring for my Mom so well during the last two-and-a-half months of our Rosie's life. Words can't express how grateful we are to these lovely, kind, compassion people. They treat their patients with grace and dignity, and they make it look easy. It takes a special kind of person to give such quality care, and St. Peter's has many of them.

  • James Buchanan

My wife Catherine was at St. Peters with cancer and I can not say anything more then being so gratefull for the for the care and understanding with the nurses and other employees there. What a wonderful place to be for people who need great care. They also have a great understanding for the families of the patients. The staff needs to be greatly appreciated.

My Mother was a patient at St Peters for several months and I found the staff showed care and compassion above and beyond. Her stay was a positive experience and she was able to return home for a short time but sadly passed away in June. Many thanks to the Staff of 2nd floor Rehab and Social Workers for going that “ extra mile”

  • maria cordeiro
