I come here from time to time because it’s genuinely always been a safe space for me. I adore art and I’ve always liked how intimate the gallery is. I went to the Thursday night event where entry is free, and donated $15 as I want to support an institution so dear to me. This time however, I was surveilled by staff from start to finish. For context, I am a black student. It was blatant, persistent, and I truly felt so humiliated because they weren’t even trying to hide it. One of the female employees aggressively followed me for 30-40 minutes in and out of different galleries, she would cross my path every single step I took. She was always behind me, walking quickly to keep up with me in every room, around every corner. At one point I went to the outdoor catwalk to take a call from my doctor AND IMMEDIATELY SHE FOLLOWED ME OUTSIDE. I stood there awkwardly as she stood behind me, as I was the only person out on the catwalk. I spent a lot of time in the Haitian gallery, because I’m Haitian myself and it meant a lot to me - only to have two employees casing the exhibit that only I was in. Throughout this visit, the employees quite literally, were my shadow. I was never once greeted by any of them, none of them uttered a single word to me. Just glared or tried not to meet my gaze at all. T, one of the downstairs employees was kind to me, as well as another employees who worked in the gift shop who listened to my concerns about staff surveillance. I’m sad, typing this from my car because I’ve never been so embarrassed, I’ve never felt so small. From someone who has always loved this museum - Do better.

Tampa Museum of Art was a lovely surprise. It's only an hour from Four Corners/Kissimmee off I-4 and I took a chance on a quick weekend trip after Hurricane Idalia and it was the highlight of my trip. I had no expectations going in but knew there must be something there for me to see. And indeed, I was gifted with beautiful pieces from classical antiquity, Greek vases, coinage from ancient Greece and Rome, and stunning Haitian art galleries that included Haiti sacred sequin arts and paintings by Haitian artists Philome Obin, Andre Pierre, Robert Saint Brice, and Seneque Obin. Yes, this musuem is small compared to others but it has gems throughout and I was able to focus and appreciate the art without getting overwhelmed or feeling rushed to see the entire collection. I learned so much in my short visit. I was reawakened to concepts and wisdoms that I almost completely overlooked and I have a new appreciation for art pieces and artifacts I've seen on my travels. The museum is not only a great place for quiet reflection and inspiration but is also an ideal location for hosting events. I was honored to witness a beautiful wedding party taking professional photos on the covered terrace while I was admiring Tampa's waterfront. My only desire is to see the museum's gift store expand it's book selection and offer more creative mediums like journals, drawing and painting materials, etc. Overall, this is a nice museum, it may not appeal to everyone, but I'm grateful it's in close proximity for quick day trips to continue my research. Thank you Tampa!

This is a very nice museum with all displays in 2nd floor. The display of Purvis Young’s Art was beautiful. His style is very unique as he used scrap junk to create art. They also antiquities; The Classical World. They also have Salman Toor No Ordinary Love on display which has photos with male genitals showing and geared towards homosexuality. I really didn’t like this and I think it’s not inappropriate for young children. I enjoyed the museum and liked that Veterans and active duty military paid $15 versus $25. They have very reasonable parking in a garage; $5 for 3 hours. It’s in a great location. They also have a gift shop. I gave the museum a 4 because of the vulgar art by Toor and as we walked down stairs there were huge dust bunnies on every step with hair in them. I can’t imagine that the staff hadn’t noticed it. Seems the stairs haven’t been cleaned for some time. I recommend visiting if in area and love art!

This is a very modern art museum, and its nothing like other museums I've toured. We were very surprised because the museum was so open on the first floor. We were a little confused because we’re used to museums that do not have as much light and are much smaller like an intimate environment. We’ve lived here for almost three years; and we were hesitant to visit because each time we walked by, the museum looked closed. When upstairs, I expected to see more exhibits because the museum is very open. We’re from the Tri-State area, so touring Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia museums unintentionally upped my museum standards (apparently that's a thing). Overall, everyone was very welcoming and kind. It was a nice stroll to avoid the afternoon heat. The 2D and 3D figures were very impressive, unlike anything I've seen before. We will most likely visit again, strictly because it's a quick break from the heat, inexpensive and it's in a beautiful area of downtown.

Parking will cost $10 but since we came at 2pm on Saturday we were able to walk .6 from Oxford Exchange and park for free. Took :10 to walk over the bridge and one block. Super easy. Our reciprocal museum/garden pass allowed us free access to the museum, normally $25 for adults, $15 for seniors/military/etc. The museum is relatively small and even reading all the information we were done in two hours. First floor had Estero Seguro exhibit (airplanes with hearts), I am a simple person… that is how I would explain it to my nephew. And Fleurish:The art of Naren Khan. Very pretty large displays of metallic flowers. Level 2 purvis Young paintings (on doors, windows…) see photos. Self taught. Additional displays of art by Estero Segura (History Bites its tail) .see photo. Next up was Miguel Aguirre (My Free Country) see photo. There were photos, tapestries, paintings, all to be considered. Come and spend a few hours. So lovely.

More impressive than I had anticipated with a diverse collection of works, although mostly contemporary. Thursday 4pm to 8pm is pay as you will and otherwise you get big discounts for student rates (and also AAA members although they don’t advertise that!) Current exhibitions such as Time for Change and the works by Salmon Toor are especially relevant and important given Florida’s current political contexts. Definitely worth seeing if you are in the area and have even a mild interest in art. Facilities were clean and well kept. Parking situation within close proximity to the museum is paid, so look into that if you’re planning to visit the museum (might be worth it just spending the day in the area which also includes the Plant Museum rather than just coming for the museum).

We finally made it to this museum after wanting to visit for years. The staff was kind and courteous. My wife was asked to check her small purse in a locker, which we found inconvenient. Also, the cost of $20, even with a veterans discount, was higher than expected. Allow 1.5-2 hours for your visit. We were impressed with the antiquity exhibit and found the descriptions very helpful. The contemporary artwork from Purvis Young Redux had a good urban, inner-city struggle vibe that was interesting to explore (Basquiat’ish). Learning about C Paul Jennewein and seeing his work was another highlight. There was a cool room with what looked like steampunk art but most of the room was roped off. This was unfortunate because we wanted to see more. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves and would recommend a visit.

I'd say that this is museum was a bit smaller than I was expecting, but currently has some iconic and historic work from the Florida Highwaymen (mostly self-taught African American artists) that is worth checking out. It should be opened until about the end of March 2021. They have a few other collections as well and currently they are featuring that and Ancient Heroines. It's their 100 year anniversary and they will be undergoing a remodel of sorts so that's pretty exciting too! Admission costs $15 for adults and $7.50 for seniors, military, Florida educators, and professional artists. Students are $5 and children are free!! There is also a small cafe with a gift shop right next to it as well. Also, it's right next to the riverwalk so you can have a nice stroll afterwards!

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the Tampa Museum of Art and was truly captivated by the exhibits and the rich collection it houses. The layout of the museum is both thoughtful and accessible, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the art. The staff were knowledgeable and welcoming, enhancing the overall experience. It's evident that the museum takes great pride in curating diverse and impactful artworks. Whether you're an art enthusiast or just looking for a day of culture in Tampa, this museum is a must-visit. I'm looking forward to returning and exploring more of what they have to offer. Highly recommended!

On Thursdays 4-8pm get FREE admission or “pay what you like”!! I really enjoyed the exhibit by Peter Max, 50 years of cosmic dreaming, at the Tampa Museum of Art. Peter Max is a very talented artist. On Friday's Tampa Museum of Arts has pay what you will and are open late which is nice. Unfortunately, the museum has a lot of wasted space and the actual viewing area of the art in the museum is really small. I don't think the normal $15 admission fee is worth it as you can breeze through this museum in 10-15min. Sono Cafe in the museum has really good wines and paninis. Tampa Museum of Art is also a great place for weddings and special events. The museum lights up with color changing LED's which look really cool at night.

  • Mariam A

The museum had some very interesting pieces. It had a variation of all forms of arts from photographs, to drawing, to paintings, to sculptures and fabric art. It was definitely interesting to walk through. And the statue outside was beautiful!! I was a bit upset the illusion room was closed. I was looking forward to that. For some reason, I was expecting a bigger museum. It was only one level. If you’re a student, you will get a free admission so have a proof ready and you’re good to go. The cafe downstairs was really nice. The natural flower centerpieces, the sofa, and the lighting were all very relaxing. And then you can go outside and walk by the river. It was perfect for my husband and I. We had a great day.

  • Stephen Dysert

I recommend visiting this museum on a day when you can get a discount or come in free. Bank of America card holders can get in free the first weekend of the month. The particular day I visited was a “family day” free to everyone. You might think from the size of the building that this museum would take a while to visit. But the exhibits won’t take you long to visit. That being said, it’s an eclectic mix of art both ancient and modern. Find something you enjoy and then slow down and really enjoy it. If you’re a Tampa local they have a lot of cool community opportunities to get involved and make art together. But if you’re a tourist I wouldn’t make this museum a top priority.

Amazing museum with equally amazing staff. We took a group of high school science students from a Title I school that had never been on a field trip before who were questioning how science aligns with art and they were dumbfounded with the experience the staff set up. After returning to the school I've never seen the kids grab their journals and make notes so fast to start on their post visit assignment. There were even regular visitors who said they 'coat tailed' our tour at times because it was so fascinating to listen in. What a unique and fun experience with a fantastic adjoining park to sit and have lunch by the water.

Went on a "Fourth Friday" to meander around the inside of this impressive building I had only previously viewed from the outside. This is an impressive group of spacious rooms. At the time of the visit their was a facsinating display Greek artifacts that showcased the amazing skill of peoplein that ancient era. There was some modern art as well that was fun to look at for the tricks they played on the eyes. One other enjoyable exhibit included cartoon art drawn on the surface of baseballs. The building is well airconditoned and even the bathrooms are works of art althought the men's room was a bit on the smelly side. It was an enjoyable place to explore.

I am the designer at Sachin & Babi and we had both our campaign photoshoot and a fashion show at the Tampa Museum of Art. We couldn't have asked for a better location! The architecture is so unique, which gave our photos and the atmosphere of our show such an elevated feel. You feel like you're somewhere special. Not only is the space beautiful, but Nick, the private events coordinator, was the best person to work with! He really went above and beyond for us. We are so grateful for everything he made happen for us. We couldn't have done it without his help! We would come back in heartbeat!

Great experience for my kids who had never been to an art gallery before. We loved the variety in the sculptures and painting styles. It was a very accessible space with lots to take in. Some of the pieces were on loan to other museums, but will hopefully be back next time. Excellent guest services by the staff. The gift shop was really nice too. Parking downtown is always a little tricky, but it was totally worth it for this great museum. Would definitely recommend to any art lover.

Tampa Museum of Art is a hidden gem that's definitely worth a visit. The exhibits are always thought-provoking, and the galleries are beautifully curated. The museum boasts an impressive collection of modern and contemporary art, as well as a great selection of classical art. The museum also offers great workshops, kids' programs, and events. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, making for a great overall experience. I highly recommend this museum to anyone in the area!

Nice open and well presented galleries. Beautiful open atrium with a huge art installation floating overhead. As of July 2021, the current temporary exhibit presents recent works by artists from various points of view. The pieces by people of various backgrounds enriches the experience. This makes the museum relatable to everyone and brings greater awareness. There is a small cafe that provides food and drink options with a small area with tables outside. This area sits beneath the large shaded portion of the building. A nice way to end or extend your visit.

  • Mrs Davis

1st visit. Nice facility, but very small. Didn't take long to get through all the exhibits. What I thought would be an all day outting turned out to be less than 2 hours, and that's walking very slowly, taking pictures at every exhibit and spending time in the gift shop. I didn't like the fact that if you park in the parking garage you have to walk over train tracks to enter the museum. Active or not it's not a good idea walking on train tracks with little kids. I would say one visit is enough, not the type of place to visit over and over again.

  • Rae

We visited the Tampa Museum of Art on one of the family days where they had several crafts for kids, as well as story time and live violinists playing. Was a great way to engage kids in history and contemporary art. The museum has a good mix of mediums, as well as local high school artists which I really enjoyed seeing. You can explore the entire museum in just a couple hours, it is not a very large museum. A few areas were under construction, limiting exhibits. Make sure to give yourself time to walk the Riverfront after visiting the museum.

  • Eileen Quijano

Small but nice. Staff was very nice except for one kid (employee) upstairs who came up behind me and my grandson very abruptly and said to backup. We were not that close, just looking at a painting, discussing it and reading the info next to it. Nothing was ever touched. I felt very offended. We were very respectful of everything. I think the other patreons were a bit put out by his actions as well.

Beautiful experience. I highly recommend this as a COVID-19 activity -- it's super sanitized and feels safe, and both the visitors and staff were conscientious about social distancing. Beautiful art, breathtaking photography exhibit, and wonderful gift shop (I got two pairs of earrings for $30 due to the 10% off sale). Took me about an hour and a half to walk through all of the exhibits that are currently open. Highly recommend!

I had the pleasure of sponsoring an event here as a vendor. As a Tampa native, I have never had the opportunity to visit this museum and I must say it is absolutely beautiful. Such a wonderful place to host an event! I had the pleasure of working with the Special Events Manager, Bernadette C. She was so lovely, explained everything that was expected & made herself available upon my arrival.

  • T Slush

The exhibits were nicely presented, but with only part of the second floor open, the museum is on the small side. The entrance and gift shop are clean and well maintained, but the gallery area on the first level is very minimal. There once was a cafe, which no longer exists, and by the looks of it, the museum did little to occupy the space properly. It's just too empty and lacking energy.

  • Todd Wortington

Great night! The music was awesome. I recommend brining a drink. They do not offer any at the event but do allow you to bring one in with you. The only thing that disappointed was they didn't play the final song on the playlist. Other than that it was a perfect night.

Great museum for a short visit. It's right by a water channel so it makes for a great sunset view. The museum isnt very large spacewise, but the displays are well arranged. Our visit included ancient Greek artifacts as well as several of the love pieces, and an infinity room! We used groupon and it was well worth what we spent. Parking is tricky so we rode an uber there.

Tampa Museum of Art was a disappointing setting for the Candlelight Concert because the lobby was too casual and small, the view of the performers and stage broken by the long staircase in the center….it was not representative of the ambience and sweeping grandeur advertised online of concerts in other venues. The music was great and the quartet performed beautifully.

  • Lori Walker

The music and ambiance were perfect! Only one recommendation: Every time guests opened the doors to go into the hallway which led to the restrooms, the bright lights were very distracting. If the doors were just left open with the hallway illuminated it would have been much better.

One of my favorite places to go if I have a few hours to spare in the afternoon/evening. I always park at Armature Work and take a 20 minute walk along the waterfront to get to the museum to avoid downtown parking. Love going here so much I became a museum member. I love that they’re open late in the evenings as well.

  • Jasmine Brone

Really nice place. Definitely a good place to step inside if you need to catch some cool air for a bit. I got lucky and didn't have to pay when I went. It's beautiful and they are working on making more sections to the museum. The paintings are amazing here and I like how they have featured artists every now and then.

  • Christine A

Inexpensive and had some beautiful pieces but rather small. The people who work there act more like security and give no information or help in the exhibits. The extremely limited exhibits make it an hour and a half visit, tops. It's a beautiful space so it might be better once they open the closed off sections.

It’s a beautiful museum. The building itself is interesting. The museum displays an impressive permanent collection of Greek and Roman antiquities. The art ranges from ancient to modern. Also, enjoy delicious food, coffee or gelato at the Museum's Cafe and find a unique collection at the Museum Store.

  • Jeremy M

The museum structure itself is very unique and stands out among other buildings in the area, however, the actual exhibitions inside on display are very few. At the time of my visit, there were around 3 or 4 small rooms/areas to tour. For the price and parking, I didn't feel it was worth the price.

This museum is located in a heart of Tampa. It has always something to see and do for everyone; great exhibits, classes, summer camps and great place to eat. A beautiful terrace overlooks the river, a park and downtown. It has easy access to River Walk and many other neighboring attractions.
