The 1920s American motion-picture cathedral was a unique architectural phenomenon developed to capitalize on motion pictures as new, inexpensive entertainment for the masses. While we watch streaming services on our smartphones in the 21st century, people in the 1920s were blown away from the fact that photographs could be animated via a hand-crank silent film projector. Tampa Theatre opened in 1926 and was designed by legendary theater architect John Eberson who pioneered an "atmospheric" style of design, which treated his guests to an "intimate moonlit Mediterranean sky dotted with stars...." In the 1960's, changes in society and the film industry rendered large, single-screen theaters like Tampa Theatre economically obsolete. In 1973, Tampa Theatre was faced with demolition but because of its architectural and historical significance, Tampa's civic and business leaders rallied to preserve the building in hopes that a revitalized theatre could also help revitalize a struggling downtown. Starting in the late 70's, restoration began and in 1978, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared an official City of Tampa Landmark Building in 1988. The theatre currently holds year-round programming to include public tours every so often. During the tour, you'll learn all about the history and get an opportunity to listen to one of the few remaining fully functional pipe organs in the country. Don't let the exterior fool you. The interior is a sight to behold!

Back in 1978, I joined the Tampa Theater's movie club. In 1980, I took my blind date to see Monty Python's AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT on June 3rd. In June 2021, we celebrated 41 years together by renting the Tampa Theater marquee to let the world know that this is where our love started and we're going strong. Sunday, August 29, 2021, we attended THE BLACK PIRATE with loved ones to celebrate a dear friend's 75th birthday. This is a fantastic venue for movies, concerts, and special events. The tour is incredible, and we learned so much about how the theater was built, its artifacts & history, and visited nooks and crannies. The staff is friendly and helpful. Parking can be a little expensive, if you park on the street or in a lot, but if you have a disable parking pass, parking is free. Carpooling can cut down expenses! Since 1978, seats have become more comfortable, with tables next to some seats for refreshments. You can buy concessions in person, or order through the app & get a text when it's time to pick up your order. The sound system is definitely 100 times better than in 1980. Buy tickets online or in person. Join the club for discounts on events and to help the theater grow. I love this theater and can't imagine Tampa without it! Note: During Covid, masks are required inside.

What a treasure this place is. I lived in Tampa 5 years when I went to USF and started my career, then moved back to the area 4 years ago. I missed out by not getting to the Tampa Theater much sooner! The architecture is singular- sort of a tropical Spanish Art Nouveau. Gorgeous tile floors and features, gargoyles along the lobby ceilings and the theater ceiling line makes it look like a nighttime skyline. Wow. As to practical matters, the AC struggles to keep up with a full house, but I was comfortable after I settled into my seat. My seat was comfortable and I could see the stage well from my back-row seat in row X. Bar lines are long but move fast. Staff was very courteous. One quibble - its 2022, time for electronic tickets. Standing in line at a will-call table was the only disappointment. Folks, its 90 degrees with 90% humidity. Let’s speed this up! Overall, I was chuffed and will look for events at the Tampa Theater just to go back and enjoy this local gem. Recommended.

Came here to watch a movie called "Waves" in February 2022 for the first time and was intrigued with the history of the building. They give a free 10-15 minute tour if you're interested. There is a lot of seating downstairs and upstairs; however, seating upstairs has less legroom. Regardless of the legroom, I decided to sit upstairs because of the general view of the theatre. They have a lot of drink and cocktail options at the concession stand, great popcorn, candies & chocolate, and mini hummus or salami/cheese packs. They also have the wine-infused salami pack option. Before the movie, there was a man playing the organ, so that was interesting and lovely - a free show! The movie ticket only costed $10 plus a $2 online fee. I am glad I finally got to come experience the inside and would recommend coming for movies and live shows, as well!

This theatre is simply awesome. It was listed by the BBC as one of the 10 most beautiful movie cinemas in the world and certainly is the most beautiful I have ever been to. It was built in 1926 as one of America’s most elaborate movie palaces. It is an amazing piece of American history and we should support and preserve this unique building. When we showed up there was a pianist playing before the movie started which was a lovely touch. The decor is fabulously over the top. I loved the movie line up which is aimed at movie lovers. They seek standard snacks but also adult beverages. Movie tickets can be bought online or in person and are standard prices and they have paid parking. They have a great website where you can read about the venue. They occasionally run tours for $10 which you can book on their website.

So elegant! So beautiful (in a Gaudí kind of way)! So many options for events to attend! Why don't more Tampans highlight this as a must-do? Whether you are interested in a typical Blockbuster release, retro movies for nostalgia, silent movies with live organ music, sing-along musicals, guest speakers (from lectures to comedians), or just want to admire the history, there is something here to tickle your fancy! Yes, it's fully indoors and the roof is enclosed, but the nighttime sky and stars effects on the ceiling made it easy to feel like you're outdoors. The seats were comfortable and the beer refreshing. My only complaint was the lack of seat-specific tickets for the movie, but there aren't many bad seats, if any at all.

Nearly all of my reviews are food, but here is a must go to place. This is not anything like your ordinary movie theater. This is a grand movie palace erected nearly 100 years ago during the height of the roaring 20s, when money was very plentiful and opulence ruled the day. Spectacularly ornate. Roam around and see the amazing details in the craftsmanship. Everywhere you turn, there is something unique to see. And the movie ticket was only $10. Think of going to a museum for $10 and they also offer a first run move that just came out. By the way, the movie was "Asteroid City" and despite the critics loving it, I hated it.

  • George Ebanks

We enjoyed a showing of "Interview with the Vampire" for the theater's "Nightmare on Franklin Street" spooky season event. It was wonderful to see this movie w/ a crowd on the big screen in such a vintage setting. Unfortunately, sometimes the acoustics can make it difficult to understand some dialogue. Also, make sure you get your concessions early because they do close the concession bar a little too early (IMO). Otherwise, you should definitely check out this historic cinema & support the arts in Tampa.

This is the most beautiful theater i have ever seen. Everything about it from the moment you purchase your ticket, to the end, engulfs one with magic. Please check this place out and pick a movie you like. It’s perfect for any ROMANTIC night. Truly feels like your stepping back in time. Last time I went was on 4th of July to watch the 1989 film “Glory”. What an amazing movie to enjoy on this patriotic holiday. Make sure to round up a dollar at the concession stand and donate to keep this place going!!!

  • Christian

I've come to this theater since I was a child as did my Mother. It's still breathtaking after all these years and has an amazing selection of live shows and movies for pretty much everyone. It's a Tampa landmark you absolutely should not miss. They show current movies and it's a much better way to spend your money than at the national chains. The sound and didplay are amazing for such an old theater. Make sure to sign up for their newsletter. They announce free movies and upcoming shows there.

  • Suly

This place will make you speechless. WOW what spectacular experience is to do the backstage tour. It is our first time in the theater and doing the tour guided by the CEO/manager takes the experience to another level, we feel the love he has for that place and that is transmitted to you. The architecture, the colors makes all seems like you are in a movie. Definitely this place is something that you need to try, even the young kids will enjoy it.

  • Dorothy Levine

I enjoyed the CatVideo Fest last night & it was amazing! This was my first visit to the Tampa Theatre & I was very impressed. The staff are friendly, courteous & made me feel very welcome. They even made sure I was in my Lyft ride safely!! The concession stand had a great assortment of movie snacks! I had a bag of popcorn & root beer soda. The seats were very comfortable & the acoustics were amazing! I hope to be returning again very soon!

  • Michelle

Probably one of the most beautiful places in all of Tampa Bay. Try and get there for Pause, a weekly happy hour with tours every 20 min. Its really nice just to enjoy looking at all the details & take the place in. The newer seats are great and more in keeping with the original design. The updated concession stand & digital projection are very nice updates that provide needed modern comforts but don't take away much from the vintage feel.

  • Melissa Previte

Such a historically beautiful piece of Tampa culture preserved in pristine condition! The venue shows movies and special events in such a unique way! You can purchase snacks and local beers or well crafted cocktails as you view a show in style! I definitely recommend going upstairs for a different perspective! Parking is a little tricky at times as you will almost always have to pay in the streets or surrounding lots, but it's worth it!

  • Melody Mahusay

Beautiful venue. We sat in the mezzanine, which had tables in between the seats for snacks and drinks. Only three bathroom stalls in the ladies' room on the mezzanine floor, so time your visit! Be aware that although the website says that concessions serve a salami and cheese tray, they do not (or at least they didn't when we were there). Only food options were popcorn and candy. Lots of drink options. We enjoyed our evening very much.

  • Frank Di Leo

What an absolutely beautiful theatre! The architecture is spectacular. Really enjoyed looking at all the old 1920's era architecture. The staff was very attentive and knowledgeable about the building. The concessions ran like a well oiled machine and no matter what time of the show you went for a snack or drink they expedited the process so that you were quickly through and back to your seat. Wonderful place. Will definitely be back .

  • Dolly 'HulaDoll' Reynolds-Dolce

Every time I go to this theater, it's like taking a step back in time! Built in the 1920's, the architecture is absolutely beautiful. Seeing a movie here is less expensive than your average movie theater, and it's sooo much better. It's not just seeing a movie, it's an event! It's nonprofit so that's an automatic draw. If you have the chance to attend something here, do it! And check out the creepy baby head while you're there.

  • allesandre bernstein

The soul of Tampa is this theatre, one of the last great architectural wonders left in Tampa the rich history and feel of this place makes it feel like your exactly where you are supposed to be when sitting in its grand presence. Every trip here, I discover something new, top of the line service and refreshments, a staff that is happy and engaged to be there. Sense of pride being in this place. True gem of the cinematic south.

  • Mary lynne

I have lived in the bay area my whole life and have never made it to this theatre. I finally went and I saw the screening of Casablanca. The experience was incredible. The history this theatre has is amazing. The srchitecture inside reminds me of something from The Phantom of the Opera. I definitely will be back to see other movies, comedy acts or shows. I highly recommend you check out this historic site

  • Nicole

I’m a huge fan of the Tampa Theatre. The architecture is gorgeous and I love their Christmas movie series in December. I finally had the opportunity to do a ghost tour and it was awesome! Jill was amazing. She’s articulate, focuses on the facts, and is a great story teller. Highly recommend! This is a great way to support the Theatre, learn some of its history, and have fun.

  • Renee “Renee B” Bertschinger

Visited the Tampa Theatre for the first time yesterday to hear "A Conversation with Robert Mazur". It was excellent and the theatre is a beautiful historic gem. The event was well organized and executed. We are excited to go back and attend future events. There is a concession stand with snacks full bar in addition to close parking available. Would highly recommend a visit.

  • Joseph Nolan

This is one of the most beautiful turn of the 20th century theaters built in 1926. The architecture, experience, and just wonderfully clean and spectacular stage and screen are splendid. I had a great time and the staff was friendly, good prices, and will be coming back again. Saw few movies there and recently,Leslie Jones stand up very funny show. Highly recommended.

  • Josh Mitchell

Visited for the first time last night and was thoroughly impressed. From the friendly staff that's extremely efficient and friendly, to the beautiful venue that you can tell is diligently cared for in every way. I would happily attend another event there and whether your sitting front row or in the balcony the steep tiered setup ensures you won't miss a beat.

  • Danny

Loved the deco!! Only complaint is you should clear out the first few rows of seats, make them easily removable?? If you want to host the "Feel Good" shows?? IMO most folks wants to Dance, when they go to the show... They can always sit in the mezzanine/balcony if they so choose. Everyone should be accommodated equally. Nobody wants to block anyone's view.

  • Yelene Labori

We will be coming back!! We absolutely loved everything about this theatre: its aesthetic, its staff, its cleanliness, it's just beautiful. We saw the timeless masterpiece, "Singing in the Rain" and where better to watch it than a traditional looking theatre like this one. (Good prices too) Overall great experience. Definitely a hidden gem in Tampa.

  • Kariane Phillips

It is such a beautiful theatre and is so full of history. Everyone was very friendly and the outside area was well lit. I utilized the pay to park lot at the corner, and it was only a short walk. We sat on the 2nd balcony because it was recommended by a staff member that it was a better view. Overall, it was worth going just to experience the venue.

  • Lid McEnery

Tampa Theatre is our city's most wonderful gem! We have enjoyed every single show and tour there. Recently, we attended the Little Mermaid Sing-Along; our first public sing-along. The crowd was so much fun and the experience made us feel like we were kids again. We have been fortunate to meet much of the staff and everyone is so kind and FUN!

  • Babs

Went to see Jesus christ superstar movie with main character there, Ted Neely. It wasn't super crowded and staff was really friendly. The theatre is really pretty, almost 100 years old. But the architecture is beautiful inside. Very cool older movies and cool place to see them. Got rocky horror picture show tickets for next time …

  • Buster Levin

We had an amazing time at both opening and closing nights of the Gasparilla International Film Festival. The Tampa Theatre is a magical place so rich in history and charm. They have a great concession stand, and the popcorn is delicious. We can't wait to take the family back for an upcoming movie. Definitely a treat of Downtown Tampa.

  • Lt Krunchy

I always love coming here… Recently was there for the Summer Series showing of Casablanca… Great atmosphere… The only thing I think that could be improved is, concessions before a sold out show… Normally I never have to wait. I was in line for over 20 min & chose to get out of line so I could see the entirety of Casablanca instead…

  • Maria Hamadeh

Absolutely beautiful. I was in awe of the detail of every square inch of the Tampa Theater. So much History behind it! Stunning theater. Had a movie screening at the Tampa Theater and it was truly magical. I will be making it my go to spot on the weekends, especially when they feature the Classic s in Silent Film and Casablanca!

  • Charles Bean

Attended the Sold out Ancient Aliens Live show at the historic Tampa Theatre. While a little disappointed in the show, the Theatre in itself is worth the price of admission as it's a totally beautiful structure. Go see a movie or an event here as you'll be amazed. Ancient Alien's gets 3 out of 5 ⭐ but Tampa Theatre gets 5⭐ …

  • Chance Bigler

An absolutely beautiful venue, lovingly restored by the community. The owners (who I don’t recall) are gracious enough to lend this venue out yearly for the Rocky Horror Picture Show which has always been an absolutely wildly fun time. There truly is no experience quite like watching modern cinema in such a historic location.

  • Janet A Torres

The Tampa Theater never disappoints. We go annually to see "It's a Wonderful Life". As soon as you drive up, you know you're in for a wonderful and special experience. The staff is also aware that it's a special place and the history of the theater remains with you throughout the entire movie! Thank you Tampa theater

  • Janet “Eats for Life” Secher-Torres

  • Hannah Baird

What a cool experience!! I've never seen a theatre like this before, it is truly stunning. The seats are pretty steep which makes them a bit intimidating to walk up but you have a great view truly no matter where you sit. I would highly recommend getting here early to a show just so you can explore the theatre.

  • Hillary Miller

A slice of history downtown, this functioning theatre serves as an event space and a cultural icon. Must- see at least once of you're in the area. Today we saw "Flying Ace", a silent film from 1926, (the same year the theatre was built) with full accompaniment on the organ also from 1926. Incredible!

  • Michael Mullady

This is a real gem for Tampa!! I had wanted to go here for the longest time and for whatever reason didn't get around to it until tonight. Would definitely come back again. We saw a live show but they also have movies frequently. The tickets are pretty reasonable as are the concessions!!

  • LiveWorkPlay Media

Stopped out today for showing. Not my first time in the theatre but one of the most beautiful, ornate theaters I've ever been in. If you don't know the history of this historic, non-profit theater opened in 1926, I highly recommend a trip to their website and to the theatre itself.

  • Albizu Acevedo

Even if the movie is not great, the experience of walking into this gem of Tampa is always memorable. The most beautiful theater in the area. Great place to watch old classics. They hold many events, and it is a non-profit. I hope it stays around for another 100 years or more!

  • Gin Dingus

This is the most gorgeous theatre I have ever been in, and I watched two of the best plays I've ever seen here over the course of two days (a tragedy and a comedy, back to back, it was cathartic)! I absolutely recommend coming and checking out the performances, and the view!

  • Karem Lopes

I've been living for 24 years in the Tampa Bay area and this was my first time inside The Tampa Theater. Such a beautiful, historic place. The ceiling is painted like the night sky and even has lights that mimic the stars. I was amazed. Highly recommend for a date night.

  • Iris Montgomery

I use to attend the theater all the time as a little girl. And being back in that building brought back so many memories. Great customer service and enjoyed all the smiling faces as we entered and exited the theater. Love it and can't wait to return for the next event.

  • Joe Caccioppo

Beautiful vintage theater. So much details in every nook and cranny. Keeps you mesmerized just looking around. Really nice restrooms downstairs. Big bar before entering the theater. We went for the Scott Kelby Photography Workshop and he sure picked the right place.

  • Tiff_ Eatz

First time getting to experience a movie at the Tampa Theatre! Absolutely loved everything about it!!!! Can’t have a bad time here!!! Going to come back for sure for Titanic! Thank you all who have kept this beautiful theatre so beautifully maintained!

  • Ron S.

Loved the nostalgia, chipped paint and all. Sound system was loud and clear. Biggest complaint was the seating. The seats are small and crammed in. If you don't know the person sitting next to you ahead of time, you will by the time you leave.

  • Jack McClarran

Went to see Jurassic Park, the original, at a special showing. Oh my goodness. This place is gorgeous, the ambience is wonderful, and that volunteer pianist before the show? Incredible. Worth every penny just for the historic theatre itself.

  • David Mangold

Saw Asteroid City and Star Wars IV revently and the sound was not right. It was quite annoying. This place is beautiful, but I did not enjoy myself because the sound was so bad. It's almost as if the highs were jacked way up and over-driven.

  • FlipFlop Floridian

I have been going here since my younger days and one of best experiences here was seeing Ravi Shankar. I recently went here to see the movie "Asteroid City" and the place is as beautiful and elegant as it always has been if not more.

  • Jeremy Blythe

Went to the Haunted Ghost Tour today... UNREAL!!! What an experience!!!!! The stories and history, ambience and just everything about the Tampa Theater was an amazing experience today. Highly recommend this tour... Don't miss it!!

  • Tracie Carley

What a fun place to see a movie! The venue is so interesting. It really adds to the experience of watching the film. After Casablanca there was a film expert available to deepen the experience if you wanted to stay afterwards.

  • Pete Balzer

Wow!! This place is beautiful! First time here and very impressed! Very cool theatre with great views from all seats! Great artwork everywhere with much detail. Must have taken a long time to create this back in the day!

  • Emma Ballard

Gorgeous and historical theater. I saw Everything Everywhere All At Once again here a few months ago and it was even better because of the theater. I wish I was wealthier so I could buy a pass to come here all the time.

  • Imperial OneLimo

I love this theatre. Stepping in this theatre feels like traveling back in time. A beautiful historic place. I went 3 times in the past 3 weeks for the Original Star Wars films they were showing. A great experience!

  • Bob Ramey

Beautiful place. First visit, got to see "It's a Wonderful Life." The building has been kept as original as possible. Great place to see a show. Refreshment prices are a little steep, but go to a good cause.

  • Stacey Dowse

Absolutely love seeing events at the tampa theater! Just the scenery and architecture are amazing. Have seen miracle on 34th street and this past weekend hocus pocus. Will go again no doubt

  • Alejandra Miguelina

As the other reviews say the theatre is simply gorgeous and very clean. Seats were comfortable. We saw the Beerasic Park. How fun experience. All in all, a wonderful experience.

  • Jennyfer Peters

What an absolutely beautiful theater. It was easy to get in it was easy to get concessions and my seat was perfect as you can see I could see the stage and I was pretty close.

  • Paul Streicher

Used to go see movies here in the '60's. Same decor. Ornate and beaitiful style. Was lucky to meet the star of Jesus Christ Superstar, Ted Neely this day. Such a nice person.

  • Robina McCormick

I'm in love with this Tampa landmark! The history can still be admired amongst the new upgrades. Don't forget to see the tiny toilet in the women's bathroom upstairs.

  • Scott Damiano

Gorgeous and historic place in a small, unassuming location. Loke the Tardis, it seems bigger on the inside. Even the bathrooms and hallways are beautiful somehow.

  • Art Myers

What a beautiful place. We went for 115 Grains movie premiere. If you have the chance to get out there. Do yourself a favor and take in the beauty of this place.

  • Greg P

One of the best venues in the bay area to see a comedian. Large enough to draw national acts, while not an arena where the performer can feel too far away.

  • Martin Heenan Jr

Our recent experience here was CASABLANCA and it did not disappoint!! We sat in the first row of the balcony, center stage, and the evening was wonderful!

  • Jazmin Bonilla

We had the opportunity to bring our kids to the fantasy theatre for back history month. The show entertains our 5-year-old students. We had a great time.
