Texas State Cemetery is beautifully kept and full of rich, Texas history! Lots of shade to help on a hot day. Be sure to check out the visitor center for a quick video and to cool off in the ice cold a/c. Walk the grounds and pay respects to many of our state’s founders, including Stephen F. Austin. Other notable graves, Chris Kyle, Ann Richards and many more. Nancy was a kind and knowledgeable tour guide. We came early to beat the heat and she was more than willing to show us around.

Beautiful resting ground for some of Texas's most revered politicians, ground breakers, athletes and military heroes such as Stephen F Austin, Governor Connelly and Chris Kyle. We were treated to an impromptu tour when we arrived and we were awed by how impressive her depth of knowledge was about the grounds, the history of Texas and the backgrounds of those laid to eternal rest here. As a lifelong Texan, this was my first visit and I was blown away.

Love the state cemetery! I downloaded the IPod tour and was able to find the several historic graves (Ann Richards & Tom Landry are my fave people there). The pillar debris from the Twin Towers actually made me emotional. There is a section of Confederate graves that some say are haunted. Cool way to check the state cemetery out is to drive through it's main thoroughfares and than park and walk at your leisure. Everybody should check it out once!

For a plot of land to symbolize death, this particular cemetery gives a more tranquility beauty instead. Trees, Flower gardens, and a stream that moves throughout the land. From soldiers of the Texas revolution, Civil War, the world wars, and beyond, to famous politicians, and other key figures of Texas history are interred in this place. It is a place to talk a walk and to pay your respects towards these folks long passed.

Although the state capital building a few blocks away seems to attract the tourists and attention, arguably the Texas State Cemetery is a better destination for those looking for a pleasant stroll through a well-kept green space with a heavy dose of Texas history. It’s a very easily navigable and accessible place with lots of familiar Texas names from Denton Cooley to Stephen F. Austin. Absolutely worth a visit.

Made an unexpected stop to the cemetery, and we were so excited to see the resting places of so many famous, beloved Texans. The temperature was extremely high so we were only able to walk a small section, but look forward to returning to see the rest of the beautiful grounds and memorials.

if you visit it, please, don't talk so loudl, show some respect. The place is in a way very very interesting, I learned many things about Texas's history and this country too! I was just a bit bothered by some unrespectful people talking at a high volume, I am not used to this..

It seems weird to "like" a cemetery but this has a lot of history and heritage to it. The care taker definitely have a lot of respect for those resting their because the premises are immaculate. There are plenty of monuments and headstones to wonder through.

  • Lorena Lopez

Immaculately landscaped cemetery, I really like this one. Again, lots of important historic Texans are buried here, like Ann Richards. There is quite an impressive memorial to Stephen F. Austin and to the victims of 9/11. Great serene place to walk through.

  • Manuel Perez

I was here to see the funeral of Navy Seal Sniper Chris Kyle. Very beautiful ceremony and the presence of the military there gave the event a powerful feeling that is almost overwhelming! The landscaping and overall design of the green is amazing!

My parents are buried there, passing away 4 months apart was hard, but the cemetery personnel were so very kind and accomadating. Close to Barbara Jordan and Tom Landry. Bob Bullock pulled off a tremendous coup getting the cemetery restored.

  • James Hall

This cemetery is beautiful. It makes you wonder how much money they spend on the landscaping here. It makes for a very nice walk with a loved one (as long as the thought of walking around the dead doesn't bother you). Definitely needs to

  • Austin Ng

A nice place for tourists to take a walk while shaded and learning about some of Texas' most notable statesmen and politicians such as Stephen F. Austin, Barbara Jordan, Bob Bullock, Senators Yarborough and Tower, and numerous governors.

I vote 5 stars to the location given by the maps app in Honor of Chris Kyles Memory and Life not only as a SEAL or Sniper, but as a dedicated and determined Father and Husband to his family. R.I.P. Kyle as u Deserve and Earned it.

Final resting place of many key people in Texas history from Civil War to present. Grounds are well maintained. Easy to walk through. The area designed as a garden. Peaceful place to clear the mind. Well worth the visit.

There is a free 30 minutes or so tour of the grounds. The grounds are immaculately maintained. A contemplative place as you meander along. The cemetery honor those who had contributed to the betterment of Texas.
