My mate and I went on the 9th of December. We were there later in the evening, after midnight. It was quite busy for being late, but didn't have a long wait to get a drink. My mate ordered a Bailey's on ice, which he was told they didn't have. So the bartender said he would make something similar. He came back with Brandy Alexander's. Except for the cream, they are not similar. But it's the thought that counts. The drink was not my cup of tea, but that is not the bartenders fault. I ordered a coupon beers but told the bartender it was his choice on what beers he brings back. I can tell you that the bartender is not a beer drinker . Again, not the fault of the bartender. I have no review of the food, as we did not have any nor do I even know if they serve food here. On another note, while my mate and I waited in queue to get in, we let these two women ahead of us, as I believe one said it was her birthday. A few moments later, the birthday girl got in to a kerfuffle with the doorman as she felt the door man got a little handsy with her. While she and the doorman discussed the incident, The other woman and I started chatting for a fair bit and we seemed to hit it off. Then we (my mate and I) were pulled aside and led downstairs, by the manager I assume, and asked what we saw. It was really just an eager girl going in a bit early and an overzealous door man. By the time we were finished with the manager, the two girls had left. Anyways, the woman I was chatting to seemed to be incredibly cool, incredibly beautiful and quite funny as well. In my stupidity, I never asked her for her number, as I was a bit distracted by her friends conversation, and maybe a bit mesmerized. Then when I thought to, it was a bit too late! I am hoping that she, one of her friends, or an acquaintance that has heard this story from her, may read this and relay this back so I that I may get in contact with her.

To get to this bar you first walk through a dimly lit tunnel road opening up to a club of four or five different bars. On the right you would find a rather underwhelming stairway taking you to The Baxter Inn bar. Once inside you would be taken back to one of those bars that are shown in classic retro movies from the early 1900’s. The place itself has a old worldly exquisite feel and boasts an unmatchable collection of more than 300 rare and exclusive whiskies. The staff are thoroughly professional that take the time to explain the menu and also offer a bowl of free pretzels. I had the Ventura while my wife had the Baba (tall glass in the picture). Both cocktails were lip smackingly delicious and I can’t wait to visit this hidden gem again soon! The Baxter Inn - You have won our hearts!

Had the best best best night at the Baxter Inn!! Leah was especially amazing, making us amazing cocktail after amazing cocktail. We asked her to make us whatever cocktails she wanted to and she definitely did not disappoint! Would 1000000% recommend people to come here on a Tuesday night to witness Leah’s amazing skills and creations x

After working in Sydney for more than 10 years never knew about this place until yesterday.. what a unique and weird place. The entrance is just a back door and you go down into a basement. Then you see the largest collection of whiskey and alcohol that I have ever seen. Some of the whiskey that we tasted was very good. The bartenders know what they are doing. Simply say what you want or let them decide if you explain the preferences. The whiskey shots range from about $15 upwards to more than $800..! If whiskey is what you like definitely check this place out. Be prepared to spend big.. The experience itself is awesome. Don’t forget if you are going here don’t drive.. as you will come out a bit fresh..

Hands down, still the best whiskey bar in Sydney. I always opt to sit at the bar, so I can get the recommendations from the knowledgeable bar staff. It always amazes me how much they know, remember and hit the mark with their suggestions. The selection on offer is enormous and I always end up getting to sample whiskeys that are tasty and won't find in your local Dan Murphy's store. But they do those as well, if you are looking for it. My best experience has always been to sample scotches from the various regions in Scotland. It always makes for a great night. Keep up the excellent work team.

WATCH as he puts the cherry down my orange peel? Baxter's has been on my list for a while and on a night out we didn't see a queue so we took the plunge. It's a great place to spend some money on delicious drinks! Seriously some of these drinks were so easy to drink and it was fun trying the different cocktails. They offer negroni on tap and of course memories of blackout night followed The menu was pizza from Frankies and since it's now shut I'm not sure what they'll do for food. However they do offer free nibbles. Hope that's enough All in all very nice venue.

The nostalgia of having to walk into a dark laneway and then down and back entrance to a basement to find an Old Style whisky Bar was like walking back in time! Sitting at the Bar you get overwhelmed by the selection of whisky on display! And the continuous cocktail making performance was entertainment enough for anyone looking for a good night out! Only found this place due to the lack of venue opening at late hours on a weekday, and this place open till 3am!

Really good whisky bar with an amazing selection of whiskys from around the world. Staff know their stuff and are friendly and it's great to see them pouring the drinks and climbing on ladders to find stuff. The whisky cocktails are great too. Underground, secret bar with an entrance down a fire escape in a back alley off the main street. The candles seem to have been dripping wax for years but it looks great. There's some space to sit depending on how busy it is. Early in the evening is great if you want a quiet time at the bar with a mate, they'll give you free pretzels too.

  • A Bunny Yay

This is an underground powerhouse that transformed me into a whiskey drinker. Try their whiskey sour or the old fashioned and you'll never go back! The Baxter Inn has fantastic staff who smile and look after you all night. The venue is wonderfully "hidden" with a dark, moody atmosphere. Beautiful horse portraits and boxing legend photos frame the walls to create an old town, American vibe. You'll get free pretzels here to snack on, yay! This place is incredible and set the bar so high I didn't want to review it (I hate queues). Thanks to the team at this establishment.

One of the best bars in Sydney if not one of the best bars I have ever been to. I give this high score mostly for the staff there. The bartenders know their craft very well, and must be perfectly trained. The selection of whisky is fantastic. They also have an amazing Sauvignon Blanc if that's your vibe. The bartenders focus on personalized approach- they will tell more more about the drink you are having, entertain you by conversation when needed and just make your visit better. I'd recommend to sit at the bar.

I really struggled here, the lighting was super dark. The candle light and the massive wax structures under the candles looked cool and made the place feel fairly gothic, but the gold lettering on the wall of drinks was impossible for me to read. Looked cool, not practical. So I largely have no idea what I was drinking from their (quite large) selection of whiskeys. There was a cloudy apple cocktail I tried that was delicious too. The drinks were good, the lights were not to my taste.

Wow! What an amazing bar! Excellent bartenders slinging out creative and traditional cocktails with an impressive selection of whiskey and gin. Cool speakeasy vibes, feels like walking into the Great Gatsby novel. Drinks start at about 25$ so the tab could easily get away from you, but worth it! If you are looking for something special this is the place. It’s down an alley in an unmarked location but across from the Duke of Clarence signs. I’m highly critical of cocktails but I have no notes for this bar!

  • L H

While the cost of drinks may be high, I can say that the knowledge and quality of staff interactions far exceed the expectations set by other established pubs in Sydney. I unfortunately didn't reserve a table, so I was unable to order food, but they were accommodating enough to allow bar seating. If you're looking for a premium whiskey experience where on and off menu drinks are offered, then this is the place to visit.

A great bar, not just for whiskey. A cool hidden gem in the city. The entrance is a bit dodgy down a fire stairwell but the vibe is great and it was open late for a Thursday until 3am before the last bell rang for drinks. Can take a while to get drinks at the bar when really busy so make sure you have friends already at a table waiting. They do manage capacity so you may have to line up for a while.

Absolutely loved this place. Even though I'm not a whisky drinker. The atmosphere is like you've taken a step back in time. You'll find yourself walking down a dodgy alley way, to then make your way down some dodgy stairs to find this amazing bar. It is definitely worth checking out if you're in Sydney. The cocktails are amazing. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. You get mini pretzels at your table. And there is a massive range of whisky/scotch drinks to choose from.

  • Evelyn Xu

Absolutely loved this whisky bar. It’s hidden in a narrow alley way and underground, so make sure you find the right place first. Drinks are not limited to the ones on the menu, so talk to the bar attendant about what you like, they really know how to make cocktails. I had two different whiskey based espresso cocktails, neither of them are on the menu and both are delicious. The same with whiskeys. If you don’t have specific requirements, ask and you will get what you want.

  • James Grant

Intimate whisky bar right in the heart of Sydney. The atmosphere is classy, and the drinks are super refined. Old fashioned was one of the best I've had. Whisky selection is comprehensive. Beer selection has some interesting drops which was a pleasant surprise. Service was impeccable, the barstaff were friendly and patient, even though we went during the most busy time on a Saturday night. Free pretzels which are definitely appreciated. Absolutely highly recommended!

  • J M

Was enjoying the bar too much that we forgot to take photos of the drinks! Great vibes and service, couldn't give 5 stars for Atmosphere due to the noise level but I guess it's understandable due to how popular this place is~ There is a HUGE variety of drinks and their signature cocktails are also GREAT. Be prepared to queue up though~

The best whiskey bar in a speakeasy fashion. I love whiskey and this bar had more selection of whiskey than I have ever seen. The staff is very knowledgeable about the hundreds of products. A hidden gem open 7 days a week from 4 pm until 3 am. Also a good wine selection that my wife enjoyed. If you get to one bar in Sydney, this should be it. You won't be disappointed.

Must go spot in Sydney and not just for whiskey lovers. Multiple options for non whiskey drinkers but for myself the best whiskey sour and old fashions I’ve ever had. Even bottomless ordinary pretzels seem like the greatest treat. Atmosphere is always amazing and the bartenders are by far the greatest.

Have been a few times and always met with great service and atmosphere except for last night. The barman serving was disengaged and made me, my wife and friends feel like we were inconveniencing him. My friends were from out of state and after I had talked so highly of Baxter's I felt embarrassed in front of them. The end result was we had one drink and left.

Very busy place which is understandable because of the awesome vibes. Hard to get a seat but when you do, it’s very chilled out. Whiskey collection is huge but prices are average. Visited the joint on a Wednesday around 10pm and it was quieter. The professional bar tender took us for a tour into there cellar, very nice gesture. My clients enjoyed it. Definitely will be back for more !

  • M So

Down the stairs at the back of Barber s Shop, The Baxter Inn has a nice vibe and pumping music. I recommend to come a little earlier, so you can get a seat. Unfortunate that some of the mid range whisky isn't in stock (3 of 4 that I tried to order), however the bar tender was able to recommend alternatives. It is a bit loud in here, but you get a good feel of a good old bar vibe.

Are you enthusiastic and passionate about whisky? If the answer is yes, you definitely need to visit this place, I think they have more than 500 whisky around the world, which probably could be more. It's a hidden bar in the heart of cbd, nice music, and nice pretzel snacks.
