This Gion gem is easy to miss. Signage is subdued and the building itself isn't visible from the street. Everything about The Common One feels secret and serene. Here, each cocktail is crafted with absolute precision and the bartenders are artists. There is no menu and drinks take a fair amount of time to create. Consideration is given to whether a drink will be shaken or stirred, what glass will be used, and even the shape of ice cube that will be showcased. When they present the finished product they show you the various bottles that were used. It's clear these cocktails are something to be savored. A few things to note: 1) Don't expect them to speak English. In fact, At the entrance a note on the door asks that folks not be mad that they don't speak English. But don't worry, they speak enough to understand what direction they should be taking with your drink. 2) There is a cover charge, but from our experience that is not unusual in Japan. If anything, it makes for a more committed customer. You're not going to order a single drink if you had to pay $8 just to get in. Also, let's not forget there's no tipping in Japan so that's a savings. 3) You can't see the bar area from the entrance so don't be upset if they say they are full. Some reviewers mentioned they were denied admittance when there was clearly space inside, however, you can only see the private tea rooms from the front. It's true these are largely empty, but they are for private parties and don't serve as overflow for the bar. The bar itself has about 14 seats and one table. When it is full, they stop letting people in. For the time it takes to make each cocktail you wouldn't want patrons elbowing for space at the bar. This place is perfect as is!

Just a word of regret. The store has the best atmosphere and atmosphere, but the worst service staff and amateur cocktail skills. I visited bars all over the world, but it was the lowest by far. It's the first time I've ever been to a bar that serves "bad cocktails" with a straight face. At the counter, the staff were so absorbed in their conversation that they didn't pay attention to the inside of the store at all. Cocktails are a mess anyway. Even college students working part-time don't make cocktails like this. Zero professionalism. This high-end bar/tea room is down a hidden ally that transports you to a different time. The property is split between a tatami-mat tea room and a traditional western style bar. Both provide amazing ambiance and look very traditional. The host/bartender (Tomosuke) was very helpful, formal and spoke wonderful English. We were served sweets and spiced water while they made our drinks. It took a while for the drinks but they were well worth the wait. We had an incredible matcha-vodka and matcha-whiskey. They were well balanced, tasted great and were aesthetically pleasing. Please note they make the matcha fresh and this process takes time. Expected a wait for drinks but know they are working hard to create them. They had English menus and were foreign friendly.

Racist. Reject service to foreign customers. To elaborate, my friends and I (a New Zealander (myself), Korean and Austrian) approached quietly after dinner for a drink. As we approached, a large party left. We asked for seats for 3 people and the host declined, stating that they were full, despite it being very obvious that more than half the vicinity was free. A very flimsy excuse for rejecting customers purely on the basis that they are not Japanese. Sadly, this was not an isolated experience in that particular part of town. I can confidently say that if that very same individual visited my own home country he would be welcomed with dignity and respect. I very much hope he sees this review and reflects on his prejudices.

BARに行ってみたい✨という願いを叶えてくれるために連れて行ってくれたのは、祇園の路地裏にひっそりと佇む素敵すぎる町家BAR玄関からBARの入り口までさらに石畳を歩いて…辿り着いた場所はもはや夢の世界BAR TIMEには少し早かったこともあり常連さんが二組おられるだけでしたが、初参者の私たちはカウンター席は畏れ多くてその手前にある小さなソファ席へオーダーの仕方もわからなくてモゾモゾしていましたが、素敵なバーテンダーさんが丁寧かつとっても親切に教えてくれはりました‍♀️メニュー表はなく、お好みを伝えて作っていただくとのこと…お好み？お好みもわからない…と正直に伝えたところ注文の仕方も教えてくれはりました私は“食後なのでデザート的な”“甘めの”“お酒に弱いので度数は低めで”“苺を使ったもの”をオーダー✨人生初のオーダーメイドカクテルは、ほんとーーーーーーーに美味しくて最後の一滴までしあわせ気分でいただきました10度ほどのアルコールとのことでしたが、よほど美味しいandいいお酒だったからか全く酔いませんでした（普段ならかなり酔ってる度数です）夜が更けるにつれて、常連さんたちがどんどんご来店〜あんなにシーンとしていたのが嘘のようにワイワイ賑やかになりましたBARって静かに飲まないといけないと思っていたのでびっくり！笑　ちなみに、オーダーメイドカクテルのお値段は一杯2000〜3000円のようです（テーブルチャージもあります）タバコのモクモクがなければまた来たいねって言いながらお暇しました

We showed up with no reservations and we were seated right away after we accepted 1,100 JPY cover which we didn’t mind. They don’t have a menu, I believe average cocktail costs about JPY 1,600. I started with a dirty martini which was not dirty but still very delicious, I then asked them to surprise me with a traditional Japanese cocktail, I requested it to be sweet. They prepared a matcha based gin drink infused with some cucumbers. It was very good! The ambiance is very nice reminded me of speakeasies back home. I was surprised to read other reviews about racial discrimination. I am a person of color of myself but I did not experience any negative behavior.

We were asked to pay 1100 yen per person for a cover charge, which is excessive given the quality of the cocktails. It seems like they only ask for cover charges from tourists. Cocktails were expensive and below average quality. Ambience was ok. Service was bad, we waited for 10 mins for the waiter to look at our way to ask for the bill, which was weird given he was standing jn front of us. Again, maybe it was because we were tourists. Overall, it was not worth the money and time. They treat tourists different and charge more. We will not go back and explore other bars, which have respectful staff and better cocktails.

An absolute delight! Me and my colleague found this bar randomly by just following the most interesting side streets and alleys in Gion late at night (as you do, of course). Even though the place looked closed at first, I'm so glad we went it because the place was absolutely beautiful. It really looked and felt like an exclusive bar. I ordered an gin and tonic and it was incredible. You even got some delishious snacks with your drink. So tasty! The drinks are a bit on the pricey side, but you are paying for quality so you won't be disappointed. Will definitely visit again!

Had such a lovely time at this place - loved the look Drawn to this place because of the lights on the pathway. It looked/is very stylish and thought that it was going to be very expensive. Our total bill of four spirits drinks was just over 8000 yen inc the 1000 yen charge. The recommended Japanese whiskies were very nice too. The snacks were good too. The staff are very professional and lovely. Also, we went on a Tuesday night and it wasn't that busy. I'd go again.

京都の夜で食事後にもう少し飲みたいならここ‼️ 注意して入口を探さないと見落としてしまうが、そこがまだ隠れた名店たる所以。入口の門を潜って細い通路を歩いてる時は、「大丈夫か？」と思うけど、その先にはこれぞ京都って感じの町屋造りのBARが現れます‼️ 広いカウンターも10席程と、和室個室も数部屋あり彼女とでも、接待でも、女子会でも利用できます。生花やお香のバランスにもセンスが感じられ、会話とお酒が楽しめるように、音楽も流さないこだわりで、距離を縮めるには最適。 お酒の種類も訳わからないくらいありますが、 特筆すべきは質の高いバーテンダーの存在感。「今日はさっぱり柑橘系」「車だから味はモヒートでノンアル」なんて希望だけで見た目も味も満足の一杯が用意されます‼️ おつまみには「燻製ナッツ」を一度は頼んで欲しい。いい香りと食感でお酒が進むの間違いなし。僕はおかわりしちゃうほど好きです。 価格は高すぎず丁度良い。お洒落に京都を楽しむにはうってつけのパーです。

I’ve been to many cocktails bars across Japan in 7 different cities. This one definitely stands out in terms of attention to details, service, and quality of the spirits used. One of my best nights in Japan for sure. You’d love this place if you like drinking in a quite, yet welcoming atmosphere.

I'm extremely disappointed in this bar. My friends and I walked into this bar when it was empty and was refused service. We confirmed the service refusal through another friend who had dinner next door. They had their chef ask for availability and was able to get in. They don't seem too friendly to foreigners.

Worst experience ever. Got there at 6:30PM and was rejected right away when the place was 100% EMPTY. The hostess gave a look that felt very uncomfortable. He was probably checking if I was local. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t accept foreign customers at a tourist area like this. DO NOT RECOMMEND.

Cute entryway path caught our attention. Drinks were well made but don't expect creativity here. They do the classics and do them well. Expect a 1000yen seating charge which means we stayed for at least a few drinks to a make it worth it. Accompanying snacks were great though!

Enjoyed our time spent here! The bartenders were very knowledgeable and went out of their way to make us comfortable. My drink was very tasty first one was an old fashioned and the second was bar tenders choice, which was a yuzu and vodka drink. It was very tasty.

I went there alone as a tourist and I’m not a Japanese. I speak English and they can speak English as well. There is no menu, they make drink based on your request or what you prefer. Cozy atmosphere and tasty drink! All staffs are polite.

職場の先輩に10年程前に連れて来てもらったお店でフィンランディアバ－の系列店。今回は幼なじみと食事後に訪問させていただきました。祇園ならではの京町家の落ち着いた雰囲気は今も変わっていませんでした。私は飲めないので飲める相手との食事の後に機会があればまた伺います。ノンアルコールで作っていただいたカクテル美味しかったです。

Lovely spot. No menu, expect to share the liquor and flavors that you like. 1100¥ cover which includes a small snack plate. They have a huge selection for those who love cocktails or want something with a great Japanese flavor.

지나치기 쉬운 작은 입구라 앞에서 조금 해맜지만 문 오른쪽의 동판에 영문으로 가게 이름이 써져있습니다. 긴 길을 따라 걸어들어가면 아담하고 귀여운 바가 나타납니다. 입구에서 바텐더님이 안내를 나와주시고 바 자리로 안내해주었습니다. 룸도 있는 것 같았습니다. 바텐더님은 매우 친절했고 짧은 영어로 즐겁게 소통하며 좋은 시간을 보냈습니다. 또 오고 싶습니다.

The ambience and interior is definitely good. You can definitely enjoy your drinks while enjoying the surroundings. Also, the staff were nice, giving recommendations and enjoys casual talks.

Lovely staff. Great cocktails made as per your preference. The bartender even gave me some snacks to take home because I loved this specific rice cracker. They have a cover charge.

Like other reviews said, they will reject you and claim they are full when they clearly aren’t. We were two Americans and they waited to hear us talk back before lying to our faces
