"Visited here after arriving late at the Hyatt and needing a bite to eat, ordered the Irish stew and club sandwich"
Recently visited the Gentleman & Scholar at the Hyatt with some family, looking for a quiet place we could enjoy a drink and a bite to eat as it was the last night of their visit. With the rest of the establishments in the vicinity being full and noisy (as is to be expected on a Friday night), we decided to go with what we thought we knew and went to the Hyatt. We had only ever known superb service and quality at other Hyatt hotels, so we were confident this would be the same. The pub was not busy at all, only two tables were occupied with two people each when we arrived fairly early in the evening. This didn't change much during our stay. We sat outside as the A/C was quite cool inside the establishment. Having waited for about about 7–8 minutes to be brought the menus, as there weren't any on the tables outside, one of us had to go inside and ask a member of staff, who hadn't bothered to come round, preferring to congregate behind the bar and chat — I think it was four of them! The gentleman we spoke to seemed to think we were blind and insisted there were in fact menus on the tables outside, when there were not. Having eventually realised we were in full possession of our visual faculties, he brought out menus. This echoes the "slow service" noted by other reviewers. Not a great start. I ordered a G&T, asking the waiter whether they had any particular gin he thought worth trying. The other two ordered a glass of prosecco and a beer. The waiter struggled to remember which gins they had at all, having to look at the menu himself and then recommending his personal favourite, which I chose. I'm not sure whether he was new and nervous – which I'd be happy to forgive to a large degree, as I have personal experience of waiting in a restaurant and bar and know the feeling. However, we all got the impression that something else might have been clouding his perception of reality. The drinks came, and while the drinks themselves were alright (you can't doo much wrong with a beer and a glass of fizz unless they were off), my rather simple G&T was underwhelming. It's a simple drink to make, but at about 20£ for a double, you'd better get that absolutely perfect! The ice machine is must be some average grade thing, delivering rather small cubes that melt too quickly, rather than the high-grade bar ice one expects at a hotel of this name and for that amount of money! The Hyatts I know from recent experience all had this. The glass itself was also not much more than you'd find at IKEA, I am sorry to say. That goes also for the prosecco glass, which was chunky and something you'd get at a provincial insurance company's Christmas party. It felt and looked cheap, as did the plastic tooth-pick in my G&T for garnish. No coasters were provided. The toilets in the pub, which I used, were shocking. The stench in there was disgusting, as was the cheap plastic air freshener that had seen better days and clearly hadn't been replaced after being depleted. One can generally judge a hotel by its facilities, and if this is what the rest of it is like, I would recommend Hyatt take its name off the building. Same goes for the ones in the lobby, with added toilet paper draped across the floor for decoration that night! The food we ordered was lovely, and the waiter eventually seemed to have woken up a little more, visibly making more of an effort and thereby somewhat redeeming the rough start. As for his colleagues, it is baffling how they could gather behind the bar and chat as if on break, while there are more waiters than occupied tables, with new customers having arrived and not been seen to. This is not what any of us were expecting at a Hyatt, which we had known from other cities to be top-notch. I will not be returning, as the prices do not in any way reflect the quality of service or the experience one would expect, I am sad to say.

This is the pub within the Hyatt hotel. A pretty disappointing experience overall. First observation when ordering at the bar was the literal dozens of small flies buzzing around and feeding on the beer inside all the draught tap spouts. Absolutely gross! A pint of Heineken lager was £7.20. Expensive by any standards. The staff were lovely but the service was fairly slow, even on a clearly quiet night. The food (chicken burger in my case) was expensive (£19), bland and poor value overall. Definitely better food and drink options in the area, which is a shame because otherwise the hotel itself is decent.

Had just flown/took train all the way from Vancouver and felt absolutely horrid. It was late and we were hungry and not in the best of moods....our server Christian turned it all around for us with his amazing attitude and spectacular service! We are dairy free and this is usually a challenge wherever we go...but not here. Fantastic options were already available and then he went the extra mile speaking to the chef and making notes on our Hyatt room to ensure we were well cared for during our stay. Really delicious proper fish and chips and kind care made all the difference. Slept like lambs after all that. Very grateful.

Love staying at the Hyatt as the staff are amazing but this is the second time I have tried the bar and sadly the service is slow slow slow slow ..they all look very busy but service for food drinks anything even asked them to put on some ambient music flew over their head really need to improve on the service ..I mean all I ordered was a soft drink wings and fries ..over 45 mins wait ..no great food asked to speak to a manager which took another 10 mins
Visited here after arriving late at the Hyatt and needing a bite to eat, ordered the Irish stew and club sandwich. Irish stew looked worse then food my dog gets, complete mush, cold and bread that might have been cardboard. Club sandwich was cold and dissapointing. No napkins, no salt/pepper and no condiments supplied, service was non-existent. The worst meal I think ive ever had and I paid £40 for the privilege!
Absolutely worth it, please have the best cocktails and food in the city, The staff is friendly, and I just love the music.

Nice bar, comfy seats and a relaxed vibe. I felt the cocktail list was a little lacking, maybe a few more would be nice. However, the Old Fashioned I had was very nice. The lady behind the bar was quick and pleasant, but a little quiet. I couldn't hear what she was saying to me. Other than that, it was a nice visit.
Absolute rip off! I am used to paying fair whack when in Birmingham City Centre. I am aware of what is accepted in certain estaishments depending on their clientele and their brand. This was just a bar and we were charged £18.50 for a pint of beer and an Aperol Spritz! Ridiculous! Will not he returning!
Every time we stay at Hyatt, we pop into Gentleman & Scholar for an evening meal and drink. The food is good, and the waiting time is reasonable even when the place is packed. What makes the place great is the staff. Thanks to Santos, Aftab and Abhi for going above and beyond during our recent stay.
So grateful to our bartender Luke for making the experience so much fun. The drinks, atmosphere, and food were out of this world! Definitely worth a visit (or 7!)

Great place to go for a drink after a concert at the Symphony Hall. Then you can get a taxi when the traffic is better. Nice Bohemian atmosphere around the hotel. The sort of place where you can people watch and get inspiration for a novel. Price is steep though
We had late snacks here following an earlier party at the hotel and we were staying overnight at the hotel. They were quite busy and the food orders took forever but they kept us informed, apologised and explained why the delays. We were
Really wonderful place to eat, the staff were great and the food was nice. They had a really big array of spirts and really nice draft beer's, cidar and larger array as well

Beautiful cocktails made by Mika. She is the consummate professional. She could and should be a bar manager. She is an asset to the company. Would highly recommend this pub and will definitely be returning.
A great place to celebrate, but can be very noisy for conversation

Caesar Salad
It was alright food wise. Interesting twist on a caeser salad. The service was good and rather quick but over all experience. There are definitely better places for a drink and nibble.
The service is very bad and every time you go the prices of the drink vary and within a very short period of time. The place is not clean and the waiter of the place is very rude.
Dirty stained seats & rugs. Weird fake fireplaces & bright lights. £ 13.50 for a sandwich! Only saving grace was the very friendly staff even though they lacked in training.
Nice place bar service very good

The service here is impeccable. The gentleman with the beard was always happy to help. We stayed at this hotel for 5 nights, and got great service each night.
Great hotel bar. A vast variety of coktails and late night food. Heated smoking terrace. Service is excellent very professional staff. Highly recommended.
A good place to eat if you are staying in the hotel and don't want to leave. If you want to try something new I would recommend the doughnut burger....
Could be so much better.

Good outdoor space with heat lamps. Street scene currently marred by large construction works. Drinks somewhat pricey.
Great selection of beverages, excellent for watching the world go by. Fantastic singer. Relaxed atmosphere nice decor
Robert was out bartender for the evening. Such a lovely guy. Fantastic cocktails and a lovely atmosphere to relax.
Rubbish - one member of staff serving. We booked another venue for meal after waiting 20 mins to be served drinks.
Frustratingly slow to get a drink! However it is a nice comfy place to sit when you do get your drink
Nice atmosphere. Nice outdoor seating area. VERY pricey drinks. Food sizes are small for the prices.
You don't have to be neither to frequent this establishment .Just go in and enjoy off the normal.
Overpriced and terrible bar service. Only upside was that it was empty so we had plenty of room.
Quiet. Clean. Standard fare. The service is slow but it's never going to be a bad experience.
Attached to the hyatt. Always a good experience. Check it out if you like a touch of class.
I wasn't allowed to enter because I wasn't wearing jeans.slacks were too nice for them!!!

Brilliant. Service was quick and drinks were flowing. One happy customer
Good if no live music plays. The place is small for any live musicians!
Called in for a Cocktail with my wife perfect place to relax at the bar
Great place to meet and mix with friends, love the atmosphere in here.
I like the black burger bun. Food is good, beer is priced ridiculously
Great place for a drink. Although those drinks are at a premium price.
Great venue visited during the Specsavers Partner Seminar. Fun times.
Very nice surroundings but very expensive. £4.50 for a pot of tea.
