So everyone has already talked about the books and customer service but let me tell you about the owner. I emailed earlier this year to ask about a copy of the four Little Women books. Bob then went above and beyond to find me the most beautiful books imaginable. Not just pretty but “oh my god, I want to cry” beautiful. Furthermore he ordered them in with no pressure for me to buy and told me he’d put them in the shop window as this was during lockdown so I could even take a look before I bought them. Martha, noticing my nose pressed against the glass and my tear-filled eyes, then let me have a sneak flick through them. I didn’t even wait to get home before I made the payment, Reader. I’ve never experienced someone with such a passion for books and uniting the right book with the right reader. No matter what the request has been, he’s been able to find me the perfect edition. Gutter has shot to my list of top indies in the past two years, they are absolutely impeccable. Would absolutely recommend to my family and friends. Repeatedly.

Unfortunately I cannot recommend The Gutter Bookshop to anyone. I'm sure the selection of books is excellent but the staff member my husband dealt was extremely rude and aggressive. I ordered a book on December 5th which never arrived. On January 3rd my husband went to the shop to investigate what had happened. He was told as I don't answer my emails (an email I never received!) it was not their problem I had not received the book. He then insisted my husband apologise for enquiring as to why the book hadn't been sent! We make a point of buying from independent book shops and all members of our family are prolific readers. We will not be returning to The Gutter Bookshop and we will be actively discouraging our friends and relatives from doing so also. This is no way to treat your customers and certainly not good business practice!

I've been a long-term patron, visitor, browser, lover and "recommender" of this wonderful bookshop. The care and attention to the written world (!) and love of books is so apparent. I'm still stunned at how Bob and his tiny team of mostly Bob and Bob have got my orders out during the pandemic so quickly. Even Bob's twitter account enhances the whole experience. It's a lovely shop, great books and great choices and always able to chat about next choices. Thoroughly recommended. Can't wait to see you all again at book festivals, out in Dalkey (hello Martha) and in the shop again in 2022. Thank you for all your help and supporting us, the readers and bookshop browsers, through COVID.

Gutter Bookshop (in both it's Temple Bar and Dalkey locations ) filled a niche for a high quality independent bookshop in Dublin. The owner has forged a path other have since followed, the shop is well stocked, full of excellent staff personal choices in books , well run, and Bob had been both advocate for retail bookselling in Ireland and a help and wise counsel to many other businesses. Their online and social media presence is second to none. It's a bookshop you will walk into and not leave without buying something, often something new to what you expected beforehand. That's why Gutter has thrived, and will continue to do so.

One of my first experiences of Dublin was in the Gutter Bookshop: New to the country, I went to a book launch, and had the loveliest time, and had the honour of meeting Bob. 9 years later it's one of my favourite places to be. Great books, and always worth it for a chat with Bob! Also love the personal touches like the staff recommendations. The online ordering is also fantastic, and with a great selection of gifts other than books I actually did most of my Christmas shopping there in one go. Bob, and Gutter, are one of the best parts of living in Ireland, may we always be so lucky to have you as part of our lives!

The Gutter Bookshop is a staple in the Irish literary community. Bob and the Gutter team have been model for professionalism, friendliness, and excellent customer service for the years I've known them. They have been an absolute delight when dealing with them at book festivals and conventions, have demonstrated endless patience with ordering in tricky titles in a prompt manner, and are always a joy to chat to when I can make it into the shop in Dublin. We are so lucky to have a bookshop like Gutter who are tirelessly passionate about all things books and their readers. I can't recommend them enough.

  • Sara Hauber

Welcoming, friendly, knowledgable, and with the perfect selection of titles. Some new, some classic, and several specialty topics that other shops would miss. The shop itself has a beautiful vibe. The lighting and layout encouraged me to enter and browse, hanging out and exploring books I had not heard of but soon realized I would enjoy. If the owner is also the book buyer, he has impeccable taste. I absolutely love this shop and wanted to buy dozens and dozens of their titles. But I settled for 10 of them and a promise to return for more every time I am in Dublin.

  • Dustin Keltner

Stopped in with my parents on my 2nd trip from America. Asked at the front "have any mysteries set in County Cork or County Kerry" and got a 10-minute guided walkthrough of the shop. "She writes in County Cork, hers are set in Cork City, hers are in Donegal but absolutely worth a read, first of her series is here and she has a new release on this shelf over here..." No lead-up to this walk-and-talk, he had it ready in the time it took to get out of his chair. Always the mark of a great bookshop. Would suggest to any book fans to make a stop.

For a small space, which adds to the intimacy of the experience, they have a good variety of books and each section has a good selection of titles. Lots of books but an easy place to browse in. The big picture windows make it feel bright and airy. The bookshop doesn't just sell books, it supports readers through it's quirky little index-card reviews, and it supports authors by hosting readings and launches. The owner's love of his shop and of books is infectious.

It’s always such a joy to come in to the Gutter Bookshop. Bob, Marta and all the staffs are amazing and always very accommodating, even when the shop is busy and I’m armed with a long list of books needing to be pre-order. They always do their best to find the book I’m after, no matter how obscure it is or even if it’s out of print. If you’re a book lover, the Gutter Bookshop should definitely be on the top of your list when you’re visiting Dublin!

  • Jennifer H

One of my favorite shops in Dublin, I always seem to find treasures in here. A great spot to pick up a signed first edition, or a unique children’s gift recommended by one of the staff. And if they don’t have the book you want, they’ll find it and order it in especially. During lockdown in 2020 and 2021, the packages arriving in the post were a glimmer of light. Long live the Gutter Bookshop!

  • Brian Herron

Absolutely beautiful little bookshop that I really hope survives. Stocking a range of idiosyncratic titles along with the usual best sellers, everything is so artfully arranged that it's just a joy to walk it to. It also sells fun but wholesome type toys like puppets. It's kind of what libraries and schools *should* look like. Bright, clean and fun to explore. Hey everyone! Go buy some books!

  • Mary R

This shop was dangerously close to our hotel on our visit to Dublin. I’m sure my husband doesn’t miss the two sweaters he left behind so that I could squeeze more books in his suitcase. I was thrilled to find a signed copy of a Kazuo Ishiguro book, and purchased a few other books recommended by the bookseller. I can’t wait for a return visit!

Mind in The Gutter? Good! Great little bookshop in the heart of old Dublin's Temple Bar street. It's more modern than a lot of the existing book shops boasting newer Irish authors and hot releases. My daughter ooohed and aaaahed over the new releases. There's a gift section and staff picks table. Something for everyone at The Gutter.

  • Helena Stone

I love this bookshop. First class service and expertise and always willing to go the extra mile to help me, even when I foolishly leave my debit card in the store. It may be a 215km roundtrip for me to shop there, but I gladly make it. And for those times travelling is not possible/allowed, their online service is second to none.

  • Mairéad Boland

I ordered two books from The Gutter Bookshop yesterday in the hope that they might arrive before the end of December to read over the holidays. They arrived this morning! Incredibly efficient service - thank you so much! Looking forward to starting Why the Moon Travels by Oein DeBharduin after breakfast. …

  • Paul Gordon

Great service, really helpful staff and always have what I want. I've been ordering from the Gutter Bookshop online during the pandemic, and I don't know how they do it as a small independent bookshop, but they're quicker than the large multi-national retailers (who I won't name)! Keep up the great work.

  • Ada OP

It is a pleasant bookshop, with a good selection of books... and very nice wrapping paper! It is not that easy to avoid the run-of-the-mill glossy pink horrors but they have done it and have the cards and stationary to hit a very good combo! Also: books! But you already knew a bookshop would have them.

  • Edel Hennessy

The shop is always a pleasant browse. But having moved away from Dublin recently I'm always grateful for how prompt the delivery service from the Gutter bookshop is! They have such a great selection of books it's always great to be able to support an independent bookshop and get releases quickly too!

  • Neil Laughlin

This eclectic independent bookstore in the Temple Bar neighborhood was a great chance find after a stop for coffee. The welcoming atmosphere invited us to sit and browse the fine book selection, and the staff was very friendly. The children's books section was particularly good.

  • Daragh Reddin

A beautiful, welcoming bookshop in the heart of Temple Bar with a thoughtfully curated selection of fiction titles, children's books and a lovely selection of signed first editions. Excellent online store with click and collect and delivery service.

  • Eddie McGuinness

Love this place and BOb and staff are so good to deal with and help full too If they don't have what you're looking for they will help plus good insight for other areas and ideas around style and authors etc Lovely to pop in to just look around too

  • Kayleigh NicGearailt

Sadly only ever ordered online being based in another county but all the online orders are packed so beautifully and the staff could not be more genuine. Did an order today and definitely boosted the post holiday blues. Great range as well!

  • Aileen Carroll

I love love this book shop & I'm lucky to pass it regularly on my walk home from work. I sent an enquire via their website & was responded to quickly by helpful staff member. Could get lost for hours here making your book selection....

  • David Rogers

It's name seems inappropriate and perhaps a bit off-putting but, if you know your Oscar Wilde quotations, you'll understand where they're coming from! Always a nice place to browse in and it's hard to leave without buying something.

  • Meli L (Meli)

Every time I come to visit Dublin, I go to this beautiful bookshop I discovered in 2016 by accident. The staff are very friendly and they seem to have everything I am looking for :) be sure I'll come around again the next time :)

  • Mary Kirwan

I ordered a book online with The Gutter Bookshop during Lockdown number 3. The delivery was super quick and the packaging, I was happy to see, was environmentally friendly. I will buy my books from you again! Thanks so much.

  • Cathy Power

This is the kind of bookshop where you can walk in and pick up about 20 books you want in 20 minutes. I was there for Nuala O'Chonchuir's launch of Becoming Belle. She always launches there and it is easy to understand why.

  • Anna Csepanyi

An amazingly curated bookshop with a great selection, and amazing staff. I particularly love that they have a rotating selection of staff picks, and they highlight the best of current and classic Irish Literature.
