During my most recent visit to Dallas for our annual charity golf tournament, my friend and co-founder introduced me to one of the best bars I've ever been to. With the increasing trend of speakeasies attaining critical mass, Thompson's stands out from the crowd. If you weren't with someone who knew it was there, you would probably walk right past it. I noticed something that I'll post in the pictures, that gave me a hint as to what we were going to do. The interior is set up like a library/lounge/lodge, and all the decor is lush and full of character. Each sitting area could be from a movie set. There are actual books that you can read in there, just but sure if you can buy them. The music was a mix of vintage compositions, jazz, and blues, which added to the ambiance. The list of cocktails is outstanding, with many classics and modern takes on old creations. A great list of Texas inspired concoctions, mixed and served by warm, friendly, and patient staff. In addition to having an awesome drink menu, they also boast an incredible happy hour, with includes their signature cocktails and high end liquors. While the main hosting area is decent and delicious, there is also an actual speakeasy, with a secret entrance, that you can also enjoy. It was closed for renovations when I visited, but I will be sure to check it out upon my return. This place attracts a wide range of clientele, because the appeal is timeless. Feelings of opulence can be experienced when in these types of surroundings. But this is the kind of place everyone is welcome and encouraged to enjoy themselves.... Quietly of course... We have loved Thompsons since moving to Fort Worth 5 years ago. If it's for choice cocktails and atmosphere then this place is your bag. All the bartenders are great at their craft and we had never had a poor experience until last night... my husband and I are bodybuilders in season so alcohol is off the menu, but cigars are a different story. With the new opening of the cigar bar we were excited to see Thompsons live up to their already high standard as a cocktail bar and one of the best in the area. But, we were very disappointed. As far as atmosphere and vibe, they did an excellent job. As far as service, it was horrendous. It took 20 minutes for us to get addressed by the server, nice girl but she acted as though she had never held a tray in her life. One server in the busy bar. We ordered 2 diet cokes, water and 2 cigars, which the server knew nothing about. While I completely understand everyone starts somewhere, the expectations of this bar in all aspects are set very high. I expected thorough knowledge and had we been drinking cocktail recommendation, We weren't met with any of the following. It took an additional 25 minutes to get our diet cokes and cigars. We had to ask 4x in the span of our 2hrs there for water which was not brought til we approached the bar and asked the bartenders. While one strike for Thompsons won't keep us away, I was so surprised at such poor service. I would KILL to work under that roof and was tempted to take that servers tray countless times throughout the night. (If yall are hiring, I'm not kidding!) We hope for a better time our next time in, we still hold the establishment in high regard. Cheers!

Fantastic three story bar! We went for an evening of drinks and had so much fun. Same menu on all three floors, but all the bartenders were lovely. First floor is the bookstore themed bar with leather couches and gorgeous decor. Hidden speakeasy in the basement has a dark prohibition feel and has house rules, so if you’re looking for a quieter bar, this is the level you want. Third floor has a complete cigar lounge with humidor. Humidor seemed a little dry though. Staff was super nice on all three floors and our drinks were great. The views from the third floor were wonderful. They also have an event center on the second floor if you want your own private space.

So, since I'm an awesome and amazing elite yelper, I decided to look up speakeasies and stumbled upon this amazing piece of amazeness. Boy oh boy did my was my husband surprised. We walk into what looks like a hole in the wall and we were sooooo surprised. It's a bookstore bar, but that's not all. When you walk in you see books and liquor on books at the bar. After you sit down theres an awesome set up behind you with a vintage look. Look up above your head and theres a book of pages that look really amazing. The bartenders at this location were amazing . We started with a Brittany, she has a cute little simba tat on her back and she made me the best chocolate mint martini. Devine made me and the guys this pineapple fusion t word thing called the spirit of texas. 3 dudes drank it. Then there was Fern, he made me a banana contraption ...dont so banana! He then made me an italianate beast,or mint julep. It was amazeballs!!! Best place ever. I'll post pics of down and upstairs later, but heres what's mid level. Cant wait to come back.

How about a cocktail with a side of Quaint, and Charming! That’s the best way for me to describe Thompson’s Bookstore. If you want to know the best places to go for a cocktail, ask Hospitality, and Entertainment industry professionals, and they will definitely point you in the right direction. Entering, you’re transported back in time. The cozy furniture, diverse clientele, and assorted literature, create the perfect ambiance for stimulating conversations. Our bartenders were a delight, and really helped us select the perfect Japanese whiskey for the night. Interesting, they offer pours by the oz. Good to know if you’re watching your budget. You can go crazy on Wednesdays, when everything is half off. Enjoy yourself at Thompson’s bookstore! Maybe you’ll find me at the bar, with a book, and cocktail! Xoxo Lorenzo

My wife and I came here to celebrate our anniversary this past weekend, but our experience was pretty bad. We would make our order, wait a bit, then say something after noticing people that came after us were getting their drinks. We did this for over 30 mins. before throwing in the towel. I flagged down one of the bartenders and asked her to remove the drinks I never got from my tab. Instead of giving any kind of apology, I got a shoulder shrug and was questioned about whether I had really had the drinks or not. I'm not sure who's running this place, but not serving customers and then questioning their integrity is a pretty awful business model. Anyways, don't waste your time here. There are plenty of other cool places that we went to, and for a little cheaper too.

Absolutely love this spot! Discovered this little gem while visiting downtown Fort Worth and looking for a good cocktail. We were going to Bass Hall for a performance and we had about 90 minutes before the show. This was about a 5 minute walk from the 777 Main Street Garage which was perfect. The happy hour is amazing for their signature cocktails. My friend and I ordered the Aviation cocktail and my husband had an Old Fashioned. The cocktails were very well made and we loved the mixologist that created them. He was super friendly and chatty even though they were extremely busy. Can’t wait to go back here and check out the speak easy next time. I would recommend this place for anyone going to Fort Worth and looking for a good cocktail.

We went with another couple to the new opening after the renovation. We could not have been more disappointed. One bartender downstairs, then we went to the cigar bar to get better service and it got worse. He didn't pay attention at all. They all seemed busy and the downstairs bartender seemed overwhelmed. It was a Saturday night!!!! After all the marketing they have done I was surprised how big of a dud it turned out to be with the terrible service. Very disappointing as both couples were really looking forward to going to Thompsons. Ultimately, we headed back to the stockyards.

This place was amazing! It was our first time there this past weekend and we did have to wait to get in but no long at all the guy running the door on 8.12.23 was awesome, good dude. Anyways my wife and I stayed on the main level for a while and then decided to check out the speak easy. That was the only disappointment for us. I thought the main floor felt more speakeasy and the speakeasy felt more like a club. Anyways, 3rd level was a cigar lounge and it was a nice set up. Over all had a great experience and Rosè took good care us all night. We'll be back, this place is what the hype says it is.

Went for the all day happy hour on Labor Day around 7pm. Tried to call to see if they were open but no answer, decided to swing by and they were open! Bar was not busy , sat down and took a bit to be acknowledged. The phone rang at least 3 times while we were sitting there and no one ever answered it. The bartender was not attentive, only attentive to what appeared to be her boyfriend at the end of the bar. Great atmosphere with well priced drinks for happy hour. It’s unfortunate that the service was poor otherwise we would have stayed for multiple drinks.

I was in downtown Fort Worth on vacation and I stumbled on this place walking back to my hotel after lunch one day and I'm glad I did. Very nice place and I loved the atmosphere. Staff was very friendly and welcoming (only went to the cigar lounge to smoke as I don't drink alcohol). Only thing that can be improved is the cigar variety, although I wrote out a list of recommendations as suggested in the menu and gave to the bartender (im talking directly to management here hahaha). I will definitely be back.

This is hands down our favorite bar. The happy hour atmosphere is the best and the quality of the drinks is top notch. This is a great bar to start your evening at. They don't serve any food so we pretty much stay until we are hungry. The downside is that when this place gets busy the service can slow way down. Again perfect for a mid-week happy hour. Not so great for a Saturday night. Can't wait to see the new renovations and additions upstairs.

I really enjoy this place. The atmosphere is super old school and the music is super chill i.e. AL Green, Ray lamontange. The drinks are very unique and the bar tenders are absolute craftsman. I had a 100 years of solitude and a witch hunter. My wife had a Norma Jeane and a Killing Pablo. The witch hunter was like a vanilla coke with mint and the 100 years was like a whiskey with a bit of sweetness and smokiness. The killing Pablo was like a jalepeno margarita, keep in mind my wife added extra spice (jalapeño agave).

Expensive but worth it for the detailed and themed cocktails. Had my birthday here and it was wonderful. Service is always friendly and helpful. We went with a group of about 5 and it was a bit crowded but that's to be expected on a weekend. Check out their social media for the password for the speak easy part. It's a fun and unique experience that we love sharing with visitors.

What's the password? S-P-E-A-K-E-A-S-Y. We snuck on down to thompson's Bookstore's "hidden" entrance around back and gave the password found on the botton of any receipt from the bookstore. Inside was a quaint bar with seating and room for plenty. There were 3 or 4 small groups when we entered, too many to count when we left. The specialty cocktails were twists on clssics but with a theme. Several were delicious. The "100 years of solitude", actually made me want to be alone.

  • Nuria Bonilla Handrop

This place was a nice surprise! At first it seemed like a place for a more mature and calmed crowd but then we realized there is a basement where they have another bar and more space to hangout. Honestly my husband and I were very impressed by the downstairs bartender, he had us all hypnotized with his skills...then we finally tasted the drinks he prepared and we were truly pleased, one of the best drinks I ever had (Lady Marmalade) we'll definitely come back for more.

  • Ty Roland

This is a cool little spot especially if you are into bourbon and gin. The main floor bar is comfortable with a handle of spots to hangout and bar staff who will answer questions and help you find what kind of drink yoi are looking for. The bar downstairs had friendly and attentive staff I absolutely plan on coming back soon

Thomson’s Bookstore has a very cool concept for a bar. The ambiance and decor is inviting and quite nice. The drinks are extremely well made. All the drinks I had there were refreshing, tasty, and made with care. The midnight moonlight and the telling of the bees were great tasting drinks. The gin old fashioned was quite strong, but well made. The details that elevate an establishment to the next level, Thompson’s Bookstore took those into account.

This place was a chill atmosphere. I was told to come back during the week when the speak easy is open downstairs. They also have a cigar lounge upstairs. Sarah, the bartender, made me feel like u was at home. Super welcoming. Can't wait to go back. The drink is a blood over flowers...might have it wrong, whiskey, cabernet, and muddled fruit. The taste is amazing

Cocktails were wonderful and went around 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. on a Monday. They had a pretty good crowd. They may want to staff a bartender or at least someone to take orders. As they have very beautiful drinks that are a little complex and it's there's no rhyme or reason to who gets served next. Bartender was very friendly just very overworked.

Promised my wife that if she stayed out a little longer; the crazy drinks would be worth it. we ordered. 25 minutes later I asked. server apologized and said she'd take care of it. 35 minutes later I was standing at the bar with the server ordering the drinks JUST THEN. My old fashioned was... adequate. My 17 yr olf nephew does a better... never had a drink in his life.

No joke waited 25 min for a drink. Would have left but they took my card hostage before drink was even made. There was maybe 10 other people in the building and pretty slow (5pm on a Friday). Thompsons need to take a week off to better train staff as drinks should never take that long. Also drinks were mediocre for the price point.

Super cool cocktail bar with very interesting drinks. I went by myself and felt pretty welcomed by the other customers and staff. Thanks guys! Also, happy new years! Uodate 2: Still awesome place

Cute little bar that feels hidden. Their happy hour is generous, $6.50 for a classic cocktail from 3-8PM every day. I tried the Aviation, which was delicious. I loved visiting Thompson’s Bookstore. All the cocktails were phenomenal and the staff was so friendly and accommodating. The space is perfect for a date, casual drinks and group meet up’s. The care that goes into crafting the cocktails is so refreshing and reflects well in the beverages. We had the best time chatting with the staff and they were all so helpful and a welcoming.

Had a wonderful birthday happy hour here. Sat at the bar and spoke with the bartender, Elijah, for a few hours. Elijah is a masterful cocktail artist who knows a surprising amount about the intricacies of Japanese wood carving and how to ruin whisky for people with some incredible recommendations. 11/10 would ruin whisky for myself again.

Cocktails here always amaze me. I’ve been downstairs mostly and love the chill and dark vibe. Great happy hour selections and prices. Definitely recommend any time of day.

Thompson’s Bookstore is a cleverly themed cocktail bar that has a prohibition feel to it. We were a little disappointed that the downstairs speakeasy was under renovations when we went. Also, it’s important to note that this is a cocktail bar (notices the bottles and bottles of liquor). They have bottles of beer available, but nothing on tap.

This is our favorite place to kick off date night. Their menu is quite amazing and the bartenders know their stuff. The staff is always very friendly. This place looked closed at first glance, we decided to try the handle and were not disappointed. The old fashioned was not too bitter or too sweet. The staff were clean and friendly. They seemed to strive to impress us with every drink - we appreciated this. Overall, a great bar with great employees. Thanks for having us!.

  • Andrew Enoch

Overall it's a pretty cool place. If you're expecting a speakeasy, I think it falls short of that expectation. The downstairs speakeasy had music playing as if it were a club. The service upstairs was slow, but it was busy. The drinks were good. The menu had a ton of typos.

Beware bartenders pour less (OUNCES LESS) on your second round! 9/8 evening ordered the same drink twice from my server, and the second was much smaller and the same price. Bartender and management more interested in profit than service. Server was professional and good.

good look but not great at finding seating for people and you can stay as long as you want which means people can take up the seats for hours leaving many people to stand around so it makes for a loud environment instead of a cozy speakeasy. So for a speakeasy, they miss the mark. For a cool bar, spot on.

Cute speakeasy. Upstairs is just as nice as the speakeasy is. If the blue light is on around the corner, you can sneak in the bottom entrance as well.
