The entrance was a little hard to locate even with Google Maps, it's around back in the alley. When you first walk in you travel down a long flight of stairs down and back a long hallway. You can see but it is very dimly lit making it feel like you've walked into a portal to another place entirely. The atmosphere is festive and fun with a chill ultra lounge feel. We stopped by on a Friday afternoon right around 3:30. The bar was busy but not crowed and we were able to find 2 seats on the far end of the bar. Elias was our bartender and could tell right away he was a true mixologist who takes his job mixing drinks seriously using proper technique as he slapped a bunch of mint leaves going into the drink he was making for a customer at the bar. The menu is full of fun fruity drink combinations which give you an island feel. Plenty of rum drinks along with a few others but mostly rum focused. I ordered the 2044 Mai Tai and my wife got the Painkiller. Both drinks were made to order using fresh juice and garnishes served in fun unique glassware upping the presentation and vibe of the drinks. The taste was also on point which was rum forward, fruity finish and dangerously delicious just like a tiki style drink should be. You definitely want to take your time as many of the drinks do pack an extra punch of liquor compared to your average cocktail which is often identied by the skull on the picture of each drink on the menu. My 2044 Mai Tai had two skulls on it meaning it packs a even bigger punch. We just stayed for the one drink as we needed to get moving for other plans, but highly recommend if you are in the area to check this place out. Definitely worth a stop for a drink.

I made a reservation for the Bamboo Room about a month before coming to the restaurant. The man at the door was not that pleasant as we approached him and explained we had a reservation and he told us we needed to come back in 20 mins. so we waited outside for 20 mins. We did finally get to go downstairs and checked in with the host which told us our room was not ready yet and we could wait off to the side, which we did. We finally were able to get into the Bamboo Room which was very dark and nicely decorated. The young lady at the bar did not address us or even acknowledge we were there so we asked her if we could get a drink menu. We sat for a while with the menu and then walked to the bar to order when she told us she would come to us so we went back to the table to wait again. We were literally the only two people in the room. We had a few questions about different drinks and she seemed annoyed. Overall, we were not happy with our service. The drinks were just okay, they looked nice but neither of us got even a slight buzz and wondered what we paid for juice or alcohol. I think the experience was nice but I don't think we would go back. I saw many good reviews so maybe we came on a bad night or just happen to be the ones who got bad service. We also asked if we could go over and order a drink at the other bar area and we were told no that they were booked so overall we had one drink, took a few pictures and left for another bar. I would say give it a try and hope you get better service than we did or book for the Three Dots and a Dash area.

We had reservations for 4 at the bamboo room at 4 pm when they opened. We were first in line and it took 10 minutes for us to be seated. Once we were seated it took 5-10 minutes for us to be given menus. Once we had menus it took 5-10 minutes to put in our order. At 4:45 we had our first drinks. The bartender gave us individual attention to make sure we would be happy with what we ordered and even came back to our table to ask us about our rum preferences. The service was SLOW, but very intentional. All of the drinks and rum we ordered were fantastic. The Polynesian spell was our favorite, but they were all fairly well balanced. We then moved to the regular bar at Three Dots and a Dash and were seated promptly (we had a second reservation, but it wasn't busy so we were seated early). We ordered several drinks there and generally enjoyed them more. The cost to enjoyment ratio was just better in general. The service seemed better overall. We were attended to more regularly and everything was just quicker at the main bar. The pearl diver and the painkiller were our favorites, but I thought the strawberry banana highball was fantastic too. All in all a pretty great experience. But, if I was given the option in Chicago, i don't think I would return. I think there are too many other options and not an "incredible" experience to spend several hours out of a limited time in Chicago to attend to again. Would certainly recommend as an experience once though. As someone who seeks out "tiki bars" across the country, I would say it's definitely one to try.

Our experience was fine, and didn’t really have any issues, so I am giving it less stars because we were personally underwhelmed by this establishment. We thought it was going to be more of a vibrant bar setting, but it’s not. It’s extremely dark throughout the entire place, creating this intimate vibe with jazz music playing. We were expecting more of a beach theme with island style music, or at least modern hits. Or maybe more of an interactive experience somehow. The service was average— they came and checked on us on occasion. The food was hit or miss. The Thai fried chicken was delicious and comes with four different dipping sauces. The corn salad was okay, but it just tasted like very heavy sesame oil and the shrimp on top was flavorless. (FYI the corn salad dish is the one that comes with the dry ice effect so get your cameras ready) The one drink I ordered came in a different mug than advertised, and it was okay. My friend got two separate drinks and they were pretty strong. I think it’s a bit of a tourist trap. We did see a group of young friends celebrating a 21st birthday, so maybe it’s a place to visit once and that’s it. I personably would have preferred to go to another bar.

Your google maps directs you to enter an alley (not scary) and you wonder, where is this taking me? You feel like Indiana Jones and you continue on your journey, the gatekeeper checks your status and allows you to pass through the gate and into the caverns. You find yourself descending below the brush and skull walls, and find yourself in a realm of pure amazing escapism! There are two bars within these walls, the "Bamboo Room", which is smaller and the focus is on craft cocktails, some with a tiki twist! Best to call ahead and make reservations for this room. The other is the original (Three Dots) and larger room, also, to be of the safe side, make reservations! The cocktails in both bars are made with a true approach to mixology, and the beverages are delicious! All the drinks I ordered were beyond tasty! They have the same food menu available at both spots, and the selections are tasty! The people here are very welcoming and very friendly! I like going to spots like this at opening, and experience them in their purest form, plus more photo opportunities without getting in the way. This spot is a must for tiki enthusiasts and non-tiki enthusiasts. As the night progresses, so does the crowd, as with most spots, so plan accordingly. This spot was nothing but awesome, and I highly recommend a visit!!!

On my most recent trip to Chicago, I visited here twice and had a great time both times. The first time was around 9 p.m., and of course, it was packed, and no seats were available, but we still somehow had great service, and the drinks were delicious. The second time, we went around 5 p.m., and we were able to get a table and really sit and experience everything. I had 4 different drinks, the strawberry junglebird, the Saturn x negroni, the house key, the namesake three dots and a dash drink. All were unique, tasted delicious, and most importantly, were strong. A lot of detail went into the drinks, the menu, the decorations, and the glasses. You can tell the people who created this space really put their whole heart into it. As for food, I tried the corn and coconut salad because it was such a different type of dish, and it did not disappoint. I hope to somehow recreate it until my next time in chicago. This is a place to add to your list as this will be a part of all of my itineraries for future trips to Chicago.

Three Dots populates many lists of chicago speakeasies - it is still a very fun bar, and has fantastic drinks - a secret hole on the wall it is not. With its ample outdoor seating and river north crowds you cannot miss three dots, but it's location and theming are still a must do. It gets crowded thurs-sat so if you are able to plan ahead and make a reservation I would highly encourage you to. Service can be a little slow but is attentive and accommodating once available. If you have a large group they have several very fun group drink options. Food is available and good. One thing to bear in mind and take advantage of is that they are a part of Lettuce Entertain You Enterprises who has a fantastic rewards program. The food is good and comes out quite quickly, I particularly like the fried chicken, we also got the tacos. Both easy to share and go down a treat with the drinks.

Three dots and a dash is a delightful speakeasy style tiki bar. It was recommended to me by a friend, and I was not disappointed! The atmosphere is wonderful. Climbing down the steps with the wall of skulls is quite the experience. It feels like you're going on a jungle cruise. The drinks are wonderful, the amount of time and effort put into crafting. These is evident. The glassware is wild, customized for almost each and every drink. Lots of garnishes per the tiki style. And in my opinion, reasonably priced for the quality. I'd be very curious to sit down and have that experience here.

This is a cool place to hang out if you’re just going for drinks and snacks. I liked the wall of skulls as you go down the stairs. We got the pu pu platter that has coconut shrimp, spring rolls, Thai fried chicken, pork sliders, crab rangoon, and prime skirt steak skewers. This cost $85 and you can get these individual items for much cheaper at an Asian restaurant. Unless you’re sharing with a group of 4, I would not order this. Even if you’re with a group of friends I would just skip this altogether. The different cocktails I would order just because they come in some unique designs. Just be aware that everything is pretty expensive here.

The atmosphere is great. Walking in really teleports you to another place. Kinda blown away by the theme. This bar is pricey but I guess it makes sense to maintain the atmosphere. Had to try the platter and out of all the food places I been to. I can say with confidence everything on the platter was delish! The spring rolls were meh but everything else was like taking a bite out of heaven. The drinks were good too. The bartenders actually know what they’re doing cause it is mix well. Overall would make a great date or just a place to chill.

Originally tried to get in on Saturday night but it was packed and we didn’t feel like waiting around for an hour as we didn’t have a reservation. Came back Sunday night before dinner and there’s a reason why it was so busy.. the bar is awesome and well deserving of all of the positive reviews. Hidden with an alley entrance you enter the downstairs bar that has great service and even better cocktails. After having hit and miss experiences at other cocktail bars, every drink we had at Three Dots all tasted great and match the tiki environment. Very reasonably priced for what you’re getting at ~$16 per cocktail.

Three Dots and a Dash absolutely delivers a unique experience, and the drinks are extremely photogenic and creative. The service, even during an off period, was a bit slow but not terrible. The food was great, although one of our items didn’t come out of the kitchen with the rest of our order, and we decided to just cancel it after half an hour of waiting. Overall, this is a unique place and I’d say it’s worth trying, although I’d probably keep your expectations of service and food in check. The drinks are where Three Dots and a Dash excels.

I love this place. I’m not local but a friend of mine recommended it in one of my visit to Chicago and it didn’t disappoint. Now, I try to visit every time I’m on the city. I love their signature drinks and attention to detail. Last time I was there I ordered food as well and the chicken and steak skewers were AMAZING! Definitely you need to try them. It gets crowded because it is very popular so, if you can make a reservation do it, otherwise you can try your luck to get a sit at the bar.

The vibes of this place are exactly how a speakeasy should look and feel. My husband tried Idle Hands and he proclaimed it to be one of the top three cocktails he's ever had in his life. I tried their house drink Three Dots and a Dash which was solid and tasty as well. The presentations of their drinks are super unique and the bar staff were friendly and welcoming on a chilly Monday evening. This was one stop of many for us in our tour of Chicago speakeasies but this is a solid one and at the very top of our list for the next visit.

Noel was our server. He had phenomenal recommendations and was so friendly, helpful, and attentive! 100/10 on service! People like him are what really make the dining experience an experience. Sam and Pepe visited to drop off drinks and food and were friendly, smiling faces, which was a warm welcome after having come from a poor experience at a previous bar. The service, food, and drinks were swift and quick! Perfect for in-between catching our ride home. Highly recommend, if for no other reason (the amazing food, wonderful atmosphere, hidden gem amongst the chaos), for the wonderful staff!

Excellent atmosphere. Dimly lit, good music and a cool mix of contemporary and traditional tiki and island style interior. Table service is usually prompt and attentive. Bar service is good but beware it can get busy and a little waiting may be necessary. Lots of out of town visitors stopping in to see what it’s all about. Food is great. Drinks are pricey but quite accurate, consistent and usually worth it if you’ve got the coin! Good times.

Climb downstairs to an elaborate tiki bar. Fun atmosphere with skulls everywhere. Drinks were impressively creative and glassware was fun. Not much in the food choice area. And time limit on sitting. After 90 minutes without ordering a second drink or food, we were told it was “last call”. So fun atmosphere built for groups or drinkers. Group drinks that serve 4-8 is normal. Music was good and not too loud. Making a reservation required a 20 dollar charge probably because the place was hard to find and Incan see people giving up and going elsewhere.

I love tiki bars so much and this is one of the coolest themed spots I’ve been to! The entrance is in an alleyway with string lights, a bit confusing but google maps will show you the way. Highly recommend making a reservation if you know you’ll be coming by because it can get pretty crowded. The drinks were really delicious, they have classic tiki drinks and some different ones as well. Appreciate the history of some of the drinks (who invented them, where they were invented) that’s included on the menu. Got the crab rangoons as well, they were so good! Super flavorful and awesome dipping sauces on the side.

  • Valerie Q Figg

What a great upscale tiki bar! The drinks are amazing- some stronger than others, and there are warnings on the menu regarding strength- both in visual presentation (garnishes and glasses are lovely) and in tastes. Each drink was $16-$18, and was well worth it. I would recommend getting a reservation if you would like to sit. I visited on a Wednesday evening with no reservation and it was still packed, with only standing room in the bar area.

This is a tiki style bar with smooth music kind of like Bossa Nova and with excellent and original coctails! Is located in an alley not in the street, but even the entrance has this hawaian look worth a couple of pictures. I believe for a weekend will need reservation since for a Thursday we needed to wait 10 min outside to go in. Worth the wait, and I believe ia a nice place to go with friends and have some fun drinks!

We went to the bamboo room here and had an amazing experience. John was our server and was excellent. He was super knowledgeable and taught me a lot about rum from around the world. I loved the vibes here, and they have a delicious and eclectic drink menu. We even were able to pop in to the main bar. I would definitely recommend. The bamboo room is my favorite spot there because it was a cozier and quieter vibe with a bigger emphasis on the cocktails. I will most certainly be back!

Walked in on a random Friday night where we decided on ramen but wasn't hungry enough. Feeling the vibe walking into the bar itself. Seats were first come first serve without reservation, but we were blown away by the cocktails that were on the menu. What was even better was the food. Fantastic tiki bar - make reservations as soon as possible! Seats fill up fast. They have inside or outdoor seating. Outdoor is casual and chill - the inside is more lounge-like with loud music and dimly lit room. I recommend booking inside. Cocktails were all very tasty - I highly recommend the Trader Vic Mai Tai. Food is also great and paired well with our drinks. Three Dots and A Dash is Morse code for V - a drink invented after WWII (V for Victory).

This was my second time here, and I enjoyed myself. This time I made a reservation in the bamboo room, which is new, more secluded and a little more upscale. This is definitely the place to go for the asthetic and the overall experience. The drinks are okay, mostly pretty to look at. This place is expensive, also not easy to find, luckily I remembered where it was from last time. I also just wish they had more of a food selection. Would recommend.

  • chad markowitz

Came here for a work event. The vibe was awesome. Coming in had a very fun, unique, and creative experience and set the mood very well. The drinks were amazing and had beautiful tiki drink ware they were served in. Each drink had a unique name, cup, and list of ingredients. They were also delicious. The food was all appetizers for this event but the staff was always walking around with things to try so there was never a shortage. Highly recommend.

A bit expensive and a little hard to find but it’s worth it. The drinks are cute and Instagram worthy. Reservations are very recommended but when I was there I did see a couple of walk ins. The tables are timed as this place is busy and can be packed. Even though it can be packed, you can still hear your server and the people at your table. We ordered the Pu Pu Platter and everything on that platter was delicious. Would definitely go again!

05/17/21: Visited Three Dots and a Dash with work colleagues and had a great time with after dinner drinks there. I couldn’t believe it’s been over 5 years since my first visit here. This is one of the first places during my first trip to Chicago. It was definitely fun and I got a fancy fruity drink with very cool dry ice, kitschy umbrella, lovely orchids, and Tiki themed scalloped/island bowl. So fun!!

Absolutely loved Three Dots and a Dash last night. We made a reservation for the Bamboo Room and we highly recommend doing the same! The Bamboo Room gives you a small private bar experience with access to high end artistic signature drinks. Our bartender was very nice, and all the cocktails we tried were cool. We also saw several other different cocktails ordered by others, everything looks awesome.

Such a cool tiki bar! Great find while we were in Chicago. Cocktails were excellent, on the pricey side but well worth it for their unique flavors, taste and impressive presentation. One of my favorite tiki bars in Chicago. Loved all their drinks. Delicious and potent if you get the ones with one or two skulls in menu.
