The medical staff was top notch. They were very courteous, knowledgeable, skilled, and caring. However, the inter-departmental collaboration was TRASH. Let me share some incidents: 1) we missed several meals during our 4-day stay, either they never took the order, or meals were not delivered. Thank goodness we prepared some snacks on the side so we didn’t get starving. 2) the discharge pharmacy screwed up the prescription and we had to wait for 4 hours to see a person. 3) we tried to contact risk management for some issue. I waited and waited and waited, and finally I couldn’t stand it and call them. The main office was closed and I was transferred to an on-call person, but it turned out that person is also just a voice mailbox. I spent an entire afternoon waiting for them to solve an issue but they were just absent. By the way, what is the point of having an on-call person if it is just another voice mailbox? 4) our nurse only got the diet restriction from the doctor right after the cafeteria was closed. 5) security officers did not give a dime about other departments or policies. I read their patients guide brochure and it says we could have personal pet visit as long as the medical staff approves. So I brought my dog to the hospital, and the security stopped us from entering saying only service animals are allowed. I had to read the pet therapy language in the brochure out loud in the lobby. And, to my surprise, they did not recognize their own policy even when I read the whole paragraph out. I had to call nurses, risk management, we listen program (which did not pick up my call) and bunch of other people to get this resolved. I really appreciate the medical services they provided there. I just hope they could do a bit more to comb through the logistic mess.

Its been a last drop in my care today.. So HIGHLY disappointed in UCSD as a whole system! I was really ready to write this long time ago, but was hoping to forget all details of my care... My MD (plastic surgery) put a referral for me for PT. Then, 2 weeks ago, I had a call from PT to schedule an appointment, but she couldn't do it since ( as she said) the referral was put incorrectly - however it was approved! She said that someone will call me back to schedule after talking to MD. Two weeks AFTER that conversation I had another call with the same problem, and was told that the message about clarification of care will be sent again STAT to MD and I will get an answer and appointment in 24 h. Yes, today I had a call and was able to set up an app with OT ( not PT) for 11/8/22. When I asked to schedule next ones I was told that the next will be in December due to Holidays. I am, as a patient and human expect CARE not once a month! If you can't accommodate patents flow - than say so, refer them out, outsource! But to throw a "bone" of 1 appointment is humiliating for patients and unprofessional for the UCSD SYSTEM! Next - Hematology department! I was seen by NP and she ordered many blood tests to determine if I need an iron infusion... Do you think she ever called back with results? NO!!!! I had t go to Scripps and get my infusions there. I NEVER in my life had so many problems with scheduling, performing, following up and indifference in care! I had my surgery on July 5 2022, 2 weeks after was admitted to ICU for sepsis, had to go 3 times to ER, had a thoracentesis done and NONE of such visits were easy! I have to say that only 2 departments are stand out of all other care! It is ICU and wound care in Encinitas!

0 Star Terrible experience!! I honestly I don't even know where to start my dad ended up at this hospital, named Doctor Mazen F. Odish came helped me out. Now let me tell you, Odish did not even smile or say, "Hi, How do you do? How's your day?" Odish was my dad doctor and he was beyond rude.Threatening to make my dad leave the hospital before even been helped. he told me take your dad home don't come back here. Also he told me STOP bring your dad to the hospital, There is NO excuse for this! he forgot the word care in his profession with ZERO excitement Of course it's not his father, but he can do better! he could have given me one minute to live the moment and enjoy it with my dad But of course he had to ruin it, Of course not questioning his job, but it's a thing I say when I can't believe what's happening around me, Odish gave to me the most dirtiest look ever and he made a disgusted face. as if I had asked him something else. he goes like, "I had nothing to do with it, this is just what i see. your dad needs to go home & again don't come back" This was extremely rude, Very unprofessional and to do that in my face! he was talking to loud angry and with his dirty behavior and unethical. my dad had been verbal abuse & insult, Emotional abuse & mistreated by odish, he treated my dad was like a dog no assistance or care. he probably would have helped a dog more. Odish is the rudest doctor ever! Very unprofessional and disrespectful Shame on you! if you are ever sick please don't go there. Or if you do go and end up with Odish, please ask for someone else take care of you. AVOID AVOID AVOID Odish is sucks.

I had a referral sent over two weeks ago from my PCP and during that time there was allegedly a sever problem that lasted several days. I called last Wednesday since I hadn't gotten a call back and was informed about the issue, but I also made it clear that it was a referral for neurology. This was the start of a week and a half of nonsense. I called their appointments number and referrals number, repeatedly told the referral was in process, the referral was processed, that I would get a callback on a certain day... Every time I called I made it clear that this was for neurology. Then, finally, after about eight or so phone calls, I called today since, once again, they didn't call back. I was told they aren't accepting any new patients for neurology for the rest of the year, that their appointments are at least six months out and that they sent a letter to my PCP yesterday. Why did you waste my time? Why didn't you tell me all this the FIRST time I called? This is absolutely ridiculous and I wasted so much time on hold, talking to various people and getting the run around. Now I have to wait to get another referral from my PCP! Ugh.

I used to think UCSD was an amazing hospital, that actually saved my life twice… but it is not the same as it was. Something stomach disease wise is coming back with a vengeance and I’m in terrible pain and nauseous.. among other symptoms. The doctors look over worked, stressed, and in a hurry. Please be sure that if you are admitted, that they are giving you correct medication doses, if you take any at home. Your medicine will be listed on your chart but they always don’t look or look and get mg’s wrong. Warning, be sure you keep track of whether someone has come by to take your food order or not otherwise you won’t receive dinner or they will give you what they decide they want to. Missing a meal from them was a common occurrence. During my hospital stay in 3East, the nurses were understaffed but when I stayed in 2West, another section, they were over staffed. Sadly, they are unable to figure out what is wrong with me so I am making a drastic decision and going to fly to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. They have the most innovative and new tests that no other hospitals here have.

My girlfriend and I were there today because she was in so much pain with her back that she couldn't walk . She is also recovering from a foot surgery and is waiting on an operation on both knees which means she is already confined to a wheelchair. After a few hours of doing nothing the staff said we should get a bus home.We told them that she couldn't walk and they referred it to a case.managernwhoni believe her name was Tina. The reply came back that Tracy, my girlfriend, had no injury and should leave the hospital even though it took myself and two nurses to help her to the bathroom right in front of us. Tina or whoever she was did not come and check out the disaband Tracy had to walk leaning on me without shoes on to get a taxi and then when I got her home we had to go up there flights of stairs. Tracy was crying in pain and is now sleeping while I look for a suitable attorney so we can sue the hospital and case manager personally so that this doesn't happen to other people.

This hospital is utter garbage. An elderly man walked into the ER and told the front desk people whom checked him in that he couldn’t walk. They didn’t bother to give him a wheelchair, he WOBBLES to the restroom; with his cane, Leaving a trail of Urine, behind. As he walks out of the restroom, *shocker* he slips on his own urine and FINALLY the nurses decide to help him up (AFTER another patient alerted staff) and seat him in a wheelchair. They asked him what happened while he’s on the floor, the man mentions he told them he was having difficulty walking and they were just in “shock” over this? This place is a joke, we were here 7 HOURS. They “threw out” our “chart” … WHAT? Once we FINALLY got in, the “room” was an ambulance bed in a hallway. Once the doctor finally saw us, they send us on our way, AFTER AN ADDITIONAL 45 MINUTES of waiting. On a lighter note; great cafeteria food. I’m ACTUALLY surprised. Great food, horrible hospital.

This is for UC San Diego Women’s Health office The office and check in were fine but I recommend that if you have “ ELIANA DEUTSCH” as one of your nurses, request someone else. She was the most unprofessional, uncaring, and insensitive health care worker I have ever experienced. I left this appointment in TEARS from how awful my experience was. She didn’t listen to me, she didn’t tell me anything new about my baby, and made it known that she did not want to show me my baby on an ultrasound, but eventually did once I told her that the front office said it shouldn’t be an issue! What was worse was when one of the staff members told me that ELIANA DEUTSCH has had multiple complaints about her from other patients. I was sure this place was great because of the reviews but was mislead. I can’t believe this place has her representing them, she had no compassion at all. I will never forget the way she made me feel about my pregnancy.

My first experience was ER and excellent multiple doctors seeing me and real care. After hitting a buck /deer that jumped in front of my bike I was hospitalized at another place in Oregon which miss diagnosed me and had morphine leaking out of my ivy with each dose until I pointed out the issue. To UCSD night and day. More fractures found that were missed and excellent treatment. 5ribs three vertebrae fractures, collapsed lung, dissection of artery in my gut l, and contusion of my pancreas. First referral appoint went bad but because I 1 was not prepared for an early appointment missing anxiety medication I’ve been on since my accident and just confusion on my part. Subsequent appointments have been excellent and great. This has been a rough road but UCSD has been like family. I apologize for my one break down and bad patient day and am grateful for the quality of care.

  • Jessi Velazquez

Doctors have been fine (when I can actually see them), but I'm sorry, the delay in scheduling here is flat out ABSURD. Completely blocks any medical care from getting done!! NO POINT IN EVEN PURSUING CARE. Here's the use case: I schedule an appointment in May for a date in late September. Then, on that date, I get referred to dermatology department to clear up a skin issue before we can proceed with the original care. Dermatology department isn't booking until February. So now, I must live with the skin condition's increasingly adverse effects before I see them! Let alone how long will it take to then clear up the skin issue, and get back in line for the original care plan??? At this rate it will never happen!! UCSD health needs to get their stuff together and figure it out, this is non-care. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND how this is helping ANYONE.

  • Bree Baziuk

The staff was absolutely rude, short staffed. Didn't pay attention to anything I said. Made fun of me for mental health issues. Blocked me from leaving & threatened to call security on me for not getting changed out of my hospital gown, fast enough. I was in the hall way for like three days with an I.V. in my arm, to where it was bruised and sore. Moreover, the nurse forgot to unattach the barbiturates they were injecting. Wouldn't let me shower and asked to observe me in the hallway, including my torso and breasts, in front of the other staff and patients. Received no help or diagnosis. Not to mention they kept me drugged up, while the staff at the Receptionist desk and otherwise talked badly about me and other patients. Saying "I didn't need to be there unless I was dying" amongst many other things.

UCSD regional Burn Center and clinic, words can’t describe how much thankful we are for the marvelous care and support. Dr. Brain Piatkowski is a remarkable physician. He took excellent care of our patient’s wound and made the healing process go even faster. The anesthesia team were exceptional! Dr. John Finneran was incredibly caring about the patient and made sure that all information were addressed and understood by the patient which made the procedure goes very smooth. The nurses were accountable and kind. Kyunjgin Park, Ferris Bautista, Shar and Brenda provided an astonishing care and compassion for the patient. The house keepers were on top of their duties. Every staff member was amazing. Thank you so much everyone. We greatly appreciate your dedication, kindness, and support.

Had a outpatient sinus surgery here in at 7 out by 5 with two weeks recovery time they said in my pre-op instructions.. She punctured my upper sinus cavity leaking cerebral spinal fluid so had to do a skin graft up there and be admitted to the hospital where the nursing Margorie Carlolong just ignored the doctors orders, nurse just did not care I was bleeding out, did not care about me until I almost bled to death, didn't think I was going to leave that hospital bed and to weak to get up I thought I was dead. Do not go here... .I see they responded to this post basically saying ooops our mistake but we are not going to fix it or do anything for you sorry...pathetic medical school UCSD we are the test subjects. It is a "practice" after all right ?.

  • Christianne Kinder

Long wait times to get in with a UCSD doctor, even longer delays with messages from your doctor in your mychart account. The doctors are so quick to prescribe certain medications without treating the actual issue, making you spend more time and money in the medical system. The billing for services is also ridiculous for these reasons. Also, if you request specific testing that you think will be good for you, the doctors will challenge you on it, instead of helping you figure out next steps. This hospital and chain of locations is so impacted, with a lot of people in the SD area having their choice of doctors being a UCSD doctor, that it's truly hard to get an appointment or get decent care.

  • Patrik Puska

Absolutely horrible experience with Gastroenterology department. Having stomach issues and the doctor ordered 2 tests. Both of them would cost me a fortune even with insurance if I would do them here, eventually doctor ordered to do it at Labcorp. 1 month after the test, results are still not posted to my chart even though the lab confirmed sending them over. Doctor could not care less, it takes him 3 weeks to respond to any of my messages. There's no follow up from clinical staff on anything. Everytime I call, front desk gives countless apologies but no action is taken. Absolutely horrible, do not waste your time and money here and look for better options to find a better quality of care.

  • Telis Kaleas

The worst experience with my last visit to UCSD Medical Center at La Jolla location. My appointment was mid-day and it took me forty minutes to find a parking and to my suprise the fee was $7 for 4 hours, almost half of my copay. Are you kidding me? I thought all these new structures at the UCSD campus will provide free parking or min fee like other institutions. So I was late to my appointment and I had to wait extra time. I don't have problems with any of my doctors but UCSD Management should figure out the parking issue and is not parking company issue. PLEASE DON'T SEND ME ANY RESPONSE since its the same for every post and your phone number doesn't work.

  • Jamie Robinson

This is by far the worst experience I've ever had with a healthcare provider. The nurse insisted I get the HPV shot even though I'm 37 years old, and they did not conduct a pre-authorization. They're now saying I owe $800+ dollars. I have spoken with their office more than 50 times and they refuse to submit the claim correctly, even though I've given them explicit instruction on how to contact BCBS and fix the claim. Shame on every single person that works in this godforsaken, money-grubbing office. I never even wanted this gd vaccine in the first place and you insisted on it so you could charge me. Losers.

  • L D

Laura and Jacques at the front desk are literally ucking awful. I asked her who the nurse was who triaged me and she said “who”? While she’s sitting right next to him. They prioritized a guy that’s had a skin rash for weeks over me who had something lodged my in throat and couldn’t breathe . These people are TRASH. Jacques was actually arguing with a patient. Said and I quote verbatim “ Why you can’t walk straight”? I’m black this Jacques is mixed. I’ve always loved this hospital but today was just AWFUL. I realize we are people but if you cannot handle your job you need a different profession.

  • Amanda Sams

I don’t know why they keep deleting my comment. Maybe because the truth of this place is very disturbing and disgusting but let me re state what I said. This place will make you sicker, the staff is constantly high, they will leave you in the hallways or hours at a time. And the place is so unclean! Rude nurses who don’t care for health and so much criminal negligence going on here. I will be back to see if this comment gets deleted and I’ll keep making the same review. DONT COME HERE, YOU BETTER OFF SOMEWHERE ELSE!

  • Laura Rigg

Avoid this place if you can. My wife had to go here while we were visiting San Diego. They had us sit on a hospital bed in a hallway and were never even given a room. We waited hours for a nurse to give her numbing drops and confirm that her eye was okay. All of that cost us over $2,000. We paid every bill they sent us and somehow still got sent to collections for around $400. They never called or emailed and we haven’t received anything in the mail from them for quite a while. Terrible.

  • Marian Styler

Absolutely the last place you should go. Most patients were either homeless or being guarded by security because they were a risk to themselves or others. I waited in the ER hallway on a stretcher for over an hour after being brought by ambulance. They were finally able to put me in a shared room that had a staff member posted up in the doorway because my “roommate’ was one of the people I mentioned above. Patients were screaming all around me. What a terrible place to be brought to!!!

  • Bonnie Chase

My son-in-law waited there for SIX HOURS last night with a bowel obstruction. No meds, no doctors, no labs, no nothing - if you need a real hospital, this is the worst of all possible choices. He’s now at Sharp, been there for about 30 minutes. He’s on his way for a CT Scan, he’s had meds and been seen by a doctor. DO NOT GO TO UCSD, whatever you do. My daughter (who is an RN) says a man with actual heart attack symptoms at UCSD was NOT SEEN while they were there. Unbelievable.

  • Lubella Gauna

Im so very impressed with this hospital. We are from Palm springs and my father ended up in the ER and hospital here. All i have to say is the doctors and nurses here are THE BEST! my father was on the 5th floor and my father was well treated. The Nurses were always there for my father. Very attentive with him. Im so happy that the ambulance brought my father to this hospital. I truly trust their doctors and services.

  • Kimone Dockery

Everyone will have their own opinion. For me I believe the staff within this organization are tremendous and ensure they are attending to the needs of their patients. Yes you will have one of situations but the good out weighs the bad and by far the care provided within this organization is one of the best not to mention the scenery or architecture of their buildings. Speaking for a pt point of view.

  • GM.

I've been in the emergency room for ten hours waiting to see a doctor. They tell us there are no beds, then they find me a bed, and I'm sitting here for three hours while doctors who are available come in, don't look at my charts or labs, say they're ordering tests, and walk out, having ordered no tests and looked at no labs. I've never seen a hospital run this badly.

  • Devon Bennett

Go to a different ER! Terrible waiting times in the triage. Came by ambulance and was left in a waiting room for 4 hours for chest pain, nausea, arm pain, dizziness. Unless you are specifically trying to see a UCSD specialty, avoid this ER. 90% of patients are suffering while rude nurses look unimpressed with what you’re going through.

  • Michael Caplan

This hospital is understaffed, and its care for neurodivergent individuals is unsatisfactory. Despite frequent apologies, actionable improvements are not seen. Pain management is particularly lacking. You’re likely to find superior care at institutions like Kaiser. Both the nursing staff and administration appear indifferent.

  • Yana Kind

My son was admitted to the burn icu and the doctors and nurses and child life specialists and everyone who took care of him are true angels. Thank you for taking such good care of my son and continuing to help him heal. We are forever thankful for these amazing people. Truly I can not say thank you enough; God bless you all!

  • Lucy Lynch

On Wednesday the 15 2023 I had a appointment with Dr. Jay Doucet, I'm so disappointed on what he did. He removed a tube attached to my right side of my stomach with a drain. He said No anesthesia or pain medicine needed. Because it was painless. He Lie!! It was the most painful that I ever felt in my life. Lucila Jimenez

This place is a zoo. During my stay at Hillcrest. Poor communication, disorganized btwn staff, NO LEADERSHIP.. Nurse tell me to do something vice asking. Room is a Motel 6. Monitor equipment way behind technology. Visit Mission Viejo Hospital you see why Hillcrest only has a 2,5 star rating.

  • Marc Tyndall

The plastic team and the trauma team are skilled, but plastic team won’t win any awards for besides manner. Hats off to the ICU as well. The nursing team is where this hospital is best though. Hospital wide Florence Nightingale would be proud. As a veteran I’ve seen my share clinical staff.

  • Media WareHouse Guy

i stayed in the burn ICU here for 7 weeks. the people here is very nice. the cafe has good food. i go here once or twice a week. child life was good here. the building is big and beautiful so this place DESERVES a place on my top 3 favorite hospitals.

I have a rare tumor called a chordoma, it is cancer. My surgeons Dr Yan and Dr Beaumont are the most caring talented doctors in the WORLD. I also want to give a shout out to all the staff. Absolutely incredible. You saved my life

  • ThePirateMarcos -

Biggest scam for parking. This hospital needs to be held accountable for falsifying tickets. They ticket vehicles with valid parking all the time hoping you won't fight it. They are scamming you. Should be investigated.
