There are lots of great things about this gym: All the equipment I need, free weights and machines Never empty and never overly crowded: and everyone is friendly and willing to spot. A lot of gyms have that; what really stands out at UAC are the staff. The owner knows my name, the employees are always really friendly, and they keep the atmosphere better than anywhere I’ve gone before. As a student, there have been 2 specific policies that have stood out at UAC: 1) their discounted student pricing which makes this top quality gym affordable on my budget, and 2) the ability to pause a membership for up to 3 months at a time. I live out of state over the summer so this saved me a lot of money. Now… if I could only break my bench press PB… Edit- I did break my bench PB before leaving this summer. Now I am back on the grind to get to that number so I can pass it again!

The customer service here is lacking, and the facility is pretty basic. I was talked into getting a month to month membership. I was informed that the gym needed a full 30 days cancellation notice. Then, a week later, I gave them written notice that I wanted to cancel my membership because I found a better gym. A gym representative, Stephanie, then informed me that I would be charged nonetheless for the following month because I didn’t give them at least 30 days notice and suggested they needed the funds to pay employees and maintain the facility. Beware that if you join and decide to cancel, do so a full 30 days in advance of the billing cycle lest you be charged for a whole month you have no intention of using.

This gym is perfect! Both the members and employees/owner are very professional and committed to standing by covid regulations. The staff and members are friendly and helpful and the space is super clean and well laid out for a variety of workouts. The owner has helped me through many stages of my life and goals over several years. From maternity, post natal workouts, injury, and the dreaded Covid 19lbs, he has been my go to trainer and I was thrilled when he opened his own place to support such a nice and knowledgeable person. He continues to impress me with how he is running his gym and I look forward to watching his success and supporting this incredible establishment.

I joined UAC during the pandemic when I was 62 years old. I left a downtown Portland, expensive private club for a location closer to work and with a focus on fitness, a variety of equipment and a skilled team of trainers. I found it with UAC. Sean, the owner, weathered the pandemic by building a quality and customer focus business. I've had boxing training and total body fitness training with members of his team. Fast forward 3 years and I am still at it and feel better than I did 10 years ago. this is a great gym, excellent help and plenty of options for every age and fitness goal. Craig VV

That’s a wonderful gym. Everything is clean and well organized. The owner cares about the people, engages in conversations and is very authentic and kind. People here mind their own business but are also respectful. I’ve been here for almost a year, and nobody ever was rude or creepy towards me. It’s my first gym and I feel so comfortable in this place I made a lot of progress and keep coming here as much as I can. If you’re looking for a community gym with good atmosphere, that’s the way to go. Anyone is welcome from the first timers to professional bodybuilders.

Outstanding local gym. There's an excellent array of lifting equipment (multiple benches, platforms and squat racks) as well as machines, cardio machines and an area for cross-fit style workouts. The equipment is all well maintained and clean. As others have said, the gym has a welcoming vibe for all sorts of people working out. There's usually a number of people around, without it being packed or needing to wait for equipment. I've been coming semi-regularly for a year now and have consistently enjoyed my time here and getting back into weight training.

Easily my favorite gym of the last decade and that's saying something given how much I've moved around. I consider UAC fully equipped, clean, and professional. You don't pay for frills that you'll never use. UAC knows what it's about. And the gym atmosphere has been great. Clientele have been respectful, focused, conscientious, and cleanly. I have yet to run into anyone that continuously slams their weights, hogs multiple machines without sharing, or eats up space taking photos/videos of themselves at the expense of others. Refreshing! Big fan of UAC.

Large space, wide range of machines and equipment, great dumb bell selection and none of them are missing, the cleanest gym I’ve been a member of, with spray bottles and cleaning towels within like 20 feet of you wherever you are in the gym. And a great price. The only negative I can think of is during the spring the air was a little woody/musty inside - im guessing from the big wooden roof gathering moisture over the last 6 months and the doors/windows being shut for as long - but it wasnt a major bother to me.

Changed my life. I've tried to get motivated to take care of my body before but it never took before I joined UAC. Since I signed up in September, I've gotten to the point where if I don't get to go to the gym for a few days I find myself missing it. I'm in better shape, I have more energy and most importantly I feel better about myself and my life. It's such a welcoming community, the staff is so knowledgeable and helpful and the space itself is great and always getting better. I'm hooked.

If you're looking for a positive, safe and convenient place to work out, check out United Athletic Club. The owner, Sean, is a very friendly and personable guy. His staff is always cheerful and cleaning equipment. He was bold to open during COVID, but he is taking the right precautions to keep everyone safe. Masks are always required, and there is an abundance of cleaning supplies available. Their hours are great, and the location in Sellwood is convenient with plenty of street parking.

UAC is exactly the community gym I’ve been looking for since moving to Portland a year ago. The community vibe, clean and well maintained variety of equipment, and professionalism of the staff is what motivates me and my fitness journey. On closures and hour changes they are very good at keeping clients informed via their multiple social media platforms. The staff is always willing to answer question and greet you on the way in and out. Would highly recommend for all levels of fitness!

High-quality equipment, friendly vibe and clean space. The owner is a longtime personal trainer who converted a former warehouse into the perfect neighborhood gym - equally great for hard-core body builders or people who just want to get in shape. They’re taking COVID seriously, too, with strict mask policies, thorough cleaning, plenty of space and a big garage door that stays open to improve air circulation. I’m thrilled to have United Athletic Club in my neighborhood!

  • Ellen Mekjavich

I bought a membership for my daughter and I when it opened and have not regretted it. The owner communicated clearly about unavoidable changes due to COVID-19 and is always helpful and friendly. I really like the calm, clean, no frills vibe, and no one trying to sell you extra stuff like at corporate gyms. Just nice people trying to be healthy and strong..not a scene at all. I also appreciate the opportunity to support a black-owned business in Sellwood.

The BEST gym! Clean, organized, and great energy all around. There are many options when it comes to equipment whether you’re coming to lift, do cardio, or it’s leg day. Equipment is thoroughly cleaned after each use and everyone is masked up. Sean has inspired me to get back on my fitness journey with challenging yet doable workouts which leave me feeling strong and confident each time. I love this gym and so will you!

  • Carla Thomas

I’ve been going to this gym for a few months and have absolutely LOVED it! Sean, the owner, always checks in with me and helps me out whenever I have a question or just need a little bit of motivation. I’ve also started to do boxing lessons here with Elias and they have been such a great addition to my workouts! I love the community feel of the gym!

I'm writing this review after a week at UAC. I'm just really happy with this experience. The facility is top notch with everything I could ask for from a training perspective. The sign up process took me three minutes. The staff has been very welcoming. Everyone working out is respectful and takes care of their own stuff. Awesome neighborhood spot!

  • Jason Bumgardner

What a great place to work out! I left one of the “chain” gyms last year and won’t ever go back. UAC has everything I need to get a great workout. They are VERY strict with the COVID protocols and have a huge garage door they can open to allow fresh air in. The personal trainer/owner is great and is always helpful with my conditioning needs.

  • Joseph Falvey

I really enjoyed my time while at this gym. Pros - never have to wait. very nice place to workout during the summer. 5 squat racks. 2 olympic lifting platforms. supporting a small business. Cons - it can be very cold during the winter. limited parking in front which employees also use to even less space. street parking majority of the time.

  • Calley Ekberg

I love this new gym! Everyone is masked up and the cleanliness is like no other gym I've been to. Spray bottles with cleaner are in reach, as are hand sanitizer. Physical distancing is practiced and taken seriously. The equipment is always in working order and the owner regularly maintains the machines.

  • William St. John

Really great locally owned gym. I've been going here for a few months, it's very welcoming, no weird vibes. It's not too big or too small, has a surprising number of good machines and bars, and the staff are always busy training people or cleaning up. Highly recommend!

  • Kevin Riggs

UAC is a hidden gem. Sean is constantly upgrading the facility / equipment, and maintaining equipment as required. A lot of different equipment, so you are not limited in what you can do. No long waits for equipment and everyone is super friendly. Sad to be moving.

  • Andrea Millen, Psy.D.

Highly recommend!! Amazing gym if you want a kind, not-too-big/busy, community-oriented experience. The owner, Sean, and staff are welcoming and warm. Fellow UAC members are generally focused and respectful. The gym is also very clean and organized. Thank you!

  • Carl Jones

UAC has the best vibe of any gym I’ve ever been to. You’ll understand immediately if you jive with it. Join up for consistently available equipment, clean facilities, and kind people working to build muscle in this down to earth no-frills gym.
