I made a reservation here for my ninth anniversary with my husband and he loved it but he's not the one writing this review, now is he? First, we both love seafood- he more than I, which is why I chose this place versus my first choice, French food. I wasn't a fan of the decor. It felt like it was dusty and hadn't been fully cleaned in a while, like the smudgy glass and all. It felt like I was stuck in some outdated restaurant from the 80s, which I think is when they first opened, so that description is actually appropriate. Ambience was okay. It was a pricier, more upscale place but it didn't feel snooty or unwelcoming. Our server was on top of it; he was quick, knowledgable and friendly. Everyone was really nice, so I feel bad about just leaving a three-star "A-OK" rating but I just was not about the food at all. Our dinner: -Wild Alaskan Black Cod Kabayaki (Sablefish) with soba noodles, green onions, spiced fish broth -Wild Ross Sea Chilean Sea Bass with butternut squash purée, gnocchi, sage brown butter -Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Cake with celery root remoulade -Bread Pudding a la mode with sea salt caramel ice cream Both fish dishes were cooked to perfection- the right amount of crisp and flakiness with such a fresh taste. However, the Wild Alaskan Black Cod Kabayaki was too salty for me and I hated the butternut squash purée on my Wild Ross Sea Chilean Sea Bass. I don't like butternut squash much in general but when it's paired right, it can be very delicious. I thought that the sea bass was just soaking in way too much of the purée and it just overwhelmed the dish. My husband loves butternut squash and even he thought it was heavy-handed on that sauce. I don't know why I bothered with the Jumbo Lump Blue Crab Cake. I've never in my life had a decent crab cake yet I feel the need to order it every time I see it on a menu, with this ridiculous hope that someone will actually get it right and that it will be outstanding. This was not that time. The Bread Pudding was complimentary for our anniversary, which was a sweet touch (no pun intended). It was the BEST bread pudding I've ever had but... I don't like bread pudding. It's very reminiscent of a White convalescent home, much like carrot cake and split pea soup. No, thank you. Honestly, the best part of the dinner for me was the warm, chewy sour dough bread. It was absolutely delicious and I could just eat that all night. If my husband were to write this review, he would undoubtedly give this place a solid four, if not five, stars. I wish I could do the same.

Don't you hate it when you pass a place a zillion times and never gave it one thought for one reason or another and when you finally go, you wish you had gone sooner? Ugh! I wish I had gone to the Water Grill sooner but glad I did go this particular time. I went with some coworkers and a partner of our organization for an after work early dinner. In total, there was 9 of us and they were able to accommodate us. I was one of the last ones to arrive but I had made it there before the bread and cocktails were served and ordered, which is right on time in my book. Let's go through what we had, shall we? The sourdough rolls... freshly baked, served with softened butter - the only way to eaten them. I ordered a Mezcalero for my cocktail and was pleasantly surprised with the smoothness of my drink. Definitely recommend if you don't like sweet drinks. Then we started often with calamari and baked oysters. The calamari was cooked to perfection. I've never been an oysters girl, but the presentation looked nice. Then I was elated when they brought out my shriml scampi, which came with jumbo shrimps. I also ordered a side of their yukon gold mashed potatoes. Not the best mash potatoes I've ever eaten, but still extremely delicious. Very buttery and creamy without being milky or watery in texture. Others at my table had the sword fish, halibut, sea bass, shrimp salad, crab and someone dared to ordered filet mignon. O-kay. Overall, there were no complaints, everyone their food. I really enjoyed my pasta, found it filling and tasty. I loved the hint of heat with it. Maybe they used pepper flakes, but something similar. Regardless, it was delicious.

First off, the food here is FANTASTIC. Probably the best piece of halibut that I’ve had in years. The side dishes were excellent too. It is what I would consider a “fair “value for the money. Excellent food at a slightly higher than average price – which I am more than willing to pay. You may ask yourself, then, why would I only rate at three stars? It’s because of the service. The restaurant was crowded so I ate at the bar. The bartender ignored me for over 10 minutes. It took forever to get a menu. It took forever to get a glass of water. It took forever for her to come over and take my order. It took forever for her to put my order in and, conversely, forever for me to get my food. Almost 20 minutes for my salad to arrive. Then, the people next to me had their food come out with their oysters. The server wanted to take the food back and told them they would “re-fire“ it before they brought it back out. I happen to over here and help them out by offering to take one of their halibut dishes, as that was what I had ordered. I am giving this review while waiting for my check, which I asked for 15 minutes ago. The people next to me, who are being served by the OTHER bartender, have received their check, paid their bill, had the rest of their bottle of wine, and are on their way out the door. I understand that people get busy, but what frustrates me is watching people around me get good service while being ignored…

The Water Grill is a great place for me, it is right across the street from the hotel I have been staying at while traveling. Heading to LA for work, you get in, your tired and you want a good solid meal, you can get that at the water grill. The atmosphere is upscale causal, the cocktails have the right balance - however I wish the beer menu was more expansive - Coors light? - with so many breweries around offer craft local selections. I find the selections to be a great mix of seafood and turf based varietals. Having sampled both I can affirm that the culinary team has their A game on - my new favorite is the scampi with papardelle - explosive flavor, perfect amount of garlic and a generous portion. Server staff, is friendly, attentive without being intrusive - Kelly made our dinner even better with Her professionalism and care to ensure the diner had want they wanted and needed. One note however, being their with a friend out of Boston, the chowder needs work - hey he's from Beantown, tough crowd. Stop in, try it out I haven't been disappointed yet. Price is commensurate for the area in town, but you get what you pay for - here it is worth every penny.

The once shining star for seafood fine dining may be slightly tarnished by a corporate hand. The hustle and bustle of New Year's Eve is certainly an excellent sign of the restaurant's popularity, but having dinner reservations pushed an hour past for an evening with a Prix Fix menu is really unacceptable. Each time there was an inquiry as to when seating was available, being told just 15 minutes more was a complete lack of respect for patrons of fine dining. The food has always been exceptional for fine dining in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, for one evening there were some major mistakes. The popular clam chowder was underseasoned and lacked actual clams. Although an order of Seabass was perfectly served at the utmost best temperature, the accompanying puree had no reason for placement on the plate. The rest of the Prix Fix was delectable, although the order of King Crab legs seemed a bit thin. The house and management were most apologetic about the miss steps, and the staff tried their very best to salvage things. I certainly hope the corporate hand isn't going further in the demise witnessed on New Year's Eve.

My recent visit to Water Grill was nothing short of extraordinary! The service was impeccable from start to finish. The staff greeted us with warm smiles and expertly guided us through the menu, making fantastic recommendations. Now, let's talk about the food – absolutely divine! The freshness of the seafood shone through in every dish. The lobster bisque was rich and velvety, while the grilled sea bass melted in my mouth. I couldn't get enough of the exquisite flavors and presentation. As for the ambiance, it was the perfect blend of elegance and comfort. The dim lighting and soothing ocean-themed decor created an intimate atmosphere that was ideal for a romantic dinner. The soft music in the background only added to the charm. I'll definitely be returning to this seafood paradise for more unforgettable dining experiences. Highly recommended!

This was across the street from our hotel when we were visiting LA, reviews looked good and the location was perfect so we went! It was a Saturday night, we didn't have a reservation but it wasn't a problem and we were sat immediately. They have an excellent selection of oysters - both east and west coast. We split an order of raw oysters. Then he ordered the lobster bisque and I ordered the fish tacos. Because I cannot eat egg, the waitress asked the chef if they would serve them grilled for me. They did! I was VERY pleased with my selection, and my husband was pleased with his. Our waitress never checked on us after the food was placed - which was a bummer because his bisque was served without a spoon. Fortunately I was able to get someone else's attention and they brought us a spoon. (he did have a couple of pieces of bread left over, but sometimes it's nice to have a spoon AND bread to sop up your soup) The place was clean and comfortable - simple decor. Would I visit again? Absolutely!! I LOVE seafood and definitely miss it living in Arizona!

I can't say enough good things about this seafood restaurant! The service was impeccable, with a genuine warmth that made us feel like old friends. The waitstaff's knowledge of the menu was impressive and helped us make excellent choices. Now, let's talk about the food – it was a seafood symphony for the taste buds! The oysters were briny and fresh, the lobster tail was a decadent treat, and the seafood pasta was a burst of flavors. Every bite was a journey to the ocean's depths. Ambiance-wise, this place hits the mark. The cozy, beachfront setting exudes relaxation and elegance. We dined al fresco with the sound of crashing waves in the background, creating a magical atmosphere that enhanced our dining experience. This seafood restaurant is a true gem, and I can't wait to return for more seafood delights!

First off, Don't come to LA'S best seafood place and order a steak... I ordered a Filet mignon and it was terrible, I sent it back. It tasted like a grainy burger, but it was tender. I've been eating at steakhouses since I was able to chew and this was a turnoff. The crab nuggets were cut up pieces of crab legs in the shell, I felt like a toddler again. The tempura lobster sushi was overhyped.. Mostly rice with a piece on top smothered in sauce.. Like a state fair sushi. The Crab pancake was good, but I was confused of the salad it came with- I would just order that and be done. The Mexican corn was OK for presentation wise, but was hoping for more flavor. Lastly. The monkey bread was the best. It made my night and I'd literally come to this restaurant just to order this and nothing else. If you feel you had a meal that didn't satisfy you Herr, just order that dessert and you'll instantly forget any negative memory on the pallet.

It's trendy, pricey, and more than a little pretentious. It is also very, very good. Everything I've had there is top-notch. Fresh seafood masterfully prepared. The seafood tower is probably my favorite, but again, I thoroughly enjoyed everything. The design and decor are absolutely beautiful, lively, fun, and inviting.

First time eating at the Water Grill with my girlfriend Ling. We had a good time, the atmosphere is busy and so understandably the service was rather slow on a Saturday evening. Recommend trying the halibut tail tortilla dish, Ling and I did not expect the sheer size of the tail and had quite a chuckle over it. The clam chowder was rather disappointing as it was really watery, not thick. Ling said it might be a taste preference but I don't think it's worth getting it considering the price. The bread they serve the table, however, was delicious. It had cheese baked into it and was served with butter. Ling and I were almost full from the bread before our appetizers were served! Ling loved the sushi we got and said it was very authentic and comparable to Japanese restaurants. With the right dishes, Water Grill is a great place to eat at.

Food was good, had a Chillaen Seabass that was grilled perfectly. The sauce was a bit sweet but that's more of a preference than an issue, portions were very generous. Location is a bit hard to find from the indoor valet. Service was great. Ambience was good. Our table was a bit close to the kitchen though. The noise didn't bother me but the heat from the kitchen made it a bit stuffy. Was here for a special event with the special course menu. Dinner here was good, but come here for drinks and dessert. I did expect more than what I got, but that is part of the experience. The food was okay. I had expected more spices and flavor from the stew and from the seafood. The crab was over cooked and the oysters were not cleaned well enough or detached from the shell. The lobster was very good and cooked perfectly. They have a wide selection of drinks and desserts and that is where they shine. Drinks were well balanced, clean and high quality. The banana pudding was really good and that is considering I'm not a big fan of carmel. Not too sweet and a great balance of salt.

You really have to try a little bit of everything here to truly appreciate the quality of the food. Perhaps trying the "fruits of the sea platter" would be a good way to start. The tuna also excellent but my favorite would probably have to be the Alaskan Halibut. This place is a fish lovers paradise. Like most fine restaurants the portions at Water Grill are extremely small. You have to have a five course meal to fill your stomach and enjoy your dining experience. The five course meals can get extremely pricey, but you do get what you pay for. The arraignment of the food on the plate seems carefully crafted. I was tempted to lick my plate clean, but it probably would not have been appropriate at a fancy place like this. The desert was excellent and carefully crafted as well. If money is no concern, you should not be disappointed here.

Wow, What an experience! If your looking at reviews to see if it is worth a try... look no further. Normally I would not call eating at a restaurant an "experience", but this was extraordinary. Chris, our server, introduced us to the most amazing oysters we have ever had. I tried them a few times in the past (other restaurants) with no delight ... but these, Wow! We also had the clams which were just as fabulous. The broth was delicious. Our main meals were the Chilean sea bass and a Lobster. Everything was fantastic! And we could not have had better service. Even if you go for a few appetizers - go for it!!!!

Food was not that good had to send items back immediately table was dirty and when the server cleaned it he brushed the crumbs on my lap food wasn't prepared properly and I know I'm a chef as well water wasn't even cold the steak was decent hair was on my bread plate and napkin. This is not a place that I would visit again. Food was not worth the price at all and they need to learn about portions. And I don't like the concept of ordering a steak entree and only get a steak and all sides where a la carte. 57 dollars for a 4oz steak that w they try to pass off as an 8oz. Just a total waste of my money. I could have got a better meal at red lobster honestly.

The manager was lovely and made some great recommendations. But I was very impressed with the level of great service from our waiter Carlos. He was on the ball the entire evening and made sure everything went perfectly smooth from start to finish. Genuinely good service by someone who has perfected his trade. The ambiance is also great here. The menu is delightful for seafood lovers, and we indulged in some lobster, crab, and a selection of oysters and other things. Everything was done perfectly and tasted delicious. I also had a steak (who doesn't love a little surf and turf) and they do them perfectly as well! (Oh and don't sleep on the chimichurri) overall a 10/10 experience. We would definitely return.

Went to LA Water Grill yesterday for Mother's Day lunch. Their fish dishes are fresh and have excellent flavor. My wife has a slight allergy towards shellfish, however, all the seafood at Water Grill is fresh, there is no fishy taste or smell. My wife and mother enjoyed their Mother's Day special Halibut Gnocchi. It was a great dining experience. Too bad I missed the DineLA menu. I will definitely be returning to Water Grill, not sure when since their prices are on the higher side.

The food was amazing and as expected we went mid day and it was very slow. Got good service. The atmosphere wasn’t all there for me. I don’t like the fact that I had to pay for parking to go to this restaurant there should be some kind of ticket for them for their customers. I’ve last tried the water grill in Irvine, which exceeded my expectations compared to this one.

Amazing seafood spot! Tried a bunch of cocktails, my favourite was the cucumber margarita (margarita verde). To begin with they serve you this very soft bread with a sea salt butter, which was very tasty! We got it thrice, lol. For appetizers, we got the chilled tower for 2, which I think is great as it comes with a good variety of seafood, including lobster, prawns, oysters, mussels, and snails. For mains, I really liked the whole sea bass- very flavourful. My wife is vegetarian, they were able to make a vegetarian pasta! Our sever, Chris, was a very friendly guy and amazing at giving us recommendations. Would definitely go back!

Fantastic food, but maybe too big for their own good. It took 20 minutes from sitting down to get our drinks, another 5 minutes to get bread and butter. We ordered a dozen oysters, the ribeye, and cioppino. It took 30 minutes to get our cooked food, and our oysters didn't show up until we were half way through our meals (we canceled the oysters when our hot food got to the table first). Although organization was lacking when we went, our server was great. Management stopped by and apologized (comped our drinks which was very nice) which made the situation better as well. Overall would recommend, just make sure to block out a few hours for your dinner.

This is the best place I've been. I genuinely enjoyed the food and how fresh the seafood tasted. I savored each bite. The staff is amazing and the manager Sarah is very professional. My waiter Jared has been so kind and the most professional waiter I've had in a very long time. He explained the menu to me when I had questions and even showed me which sauces to use for the oysters. The entire staff communicates with each other, which I love since I work in the food industry myself. This is the best dinning experience I've had thus far. When I come back to LA, I will definitely come back here because they left a imprint on me. Thank you.

  • Abe Elsaeed

I had to say something. Jared the waiter was sooo gracious and knowledgeable . He recommended the sea bass. I don’t like squash so I swapped it for mashed potatoes. This dish was probably the best sea bass/fish I’ve had in my life. I cook at home so I kept trying to figure out what they had in there, but I could only sense butter!!! Not much right!! . It’s just amazing. If I am every back in LA I would definitely come back for this dish! I The think they would stay in business if they just served this dish!

We had a wonderful meal at Water Grill on 10/18. Our servers were excellent, professional, friendly and attentive. They paced our meal well and tended to our needs without being intrusive. We ordered an oyster sampler, tomato salad and a wedge salad for starters. I ordered the California spiny lobster and my husband ordered the black cod over noodles. Every dish was excellent. The bread with Asiago cheese and onion was delicious. It was a perfect dinner! We would definitely return next time we’re in town.

Staffs are friendly and very professional and that’s what it counts before food. I asked suggestions for wine and main dish; Oregon white wine that the manager recommended was outstanding and perfect pairing, our server advised me to try spiny lobster(Australia) which was on season, super fresh and meatier made my dinner wonderful! Iced shellfish platter was good too, super fresh and snails are included! I unfortunately have to take one star out for slow service. But everything was great and beyond.

Our dinner conversations went beyond our dining time but nobody rushed us or gave us the impression we should clear out. Overall the professional atmosphere was appreciated by our table.

Water Grill is Classy and Romantic. Dim lighting, comfortable seating and smells that will entice your taste buds. I allowed my waiter to choose the two best dinner entrées the restaurant had to offer. Jared (my waiter) did not disappoint! Absolutely amazing food and totally worth the price. I can’t wait to go back.

We liked the food, presentation, quality and the taste. We ordered different fish dishes / black cod, sea bass, salmon/ carrots, sprouts, puree. Our server Flavio was very sweet. Ambiance was nice. I love that open kitchen concept. Absolutely recommended restaurant.

Had an amazing experience, thought that the menu looked a little pricy but was surprised by the portions and quality, me and me friend we and and spent over 200$ and every penny was worth it. The atmosphere was nice and high end, we were afraid of getting turned down because of a dress code but luckily we were safe. If you are looking for fresh seafood, this place is it!

Last time I dined at Water Grill before tonight, it was in 1992 when I was working in DTLA. 30 years later, the food is still amazing! We ordered a dozen of oysters and tuna tartare as appetizers. Chilean sea bass, lobster roll and cioppino as entrees. Everything was scrumptious. Our waiter Chris was friendly and professional. Good job Chris!

The seafood tower for 1-2 people is so worth it. I get it everytime! And the bartender Marques always takes good care of me. Make sure to get one of their signature drinks, the Margarita Verde

I Dined in for lunch. The ambiance was very attractive and the service was certainly good. So, for appetizer I had the “clam chowder” and for lunch I had the “king salmon”. Both meals were delicious. Though the Resturant was packed with customers my food came in a very timely manner. I’ll definitely go back for the dinner experience.

Tried oyster sampler, calamari, octopus, Alaskan King Crab legs, and black cod. Oysters had too much shell debris, and appetizers were too salty for my taste. Black cod was bland and Crab legs were too salty. When I came here six months ago, it wasn't this salty, but not sure what happened. Service was friendly, however.

Food was fantastic. Service was nice. People were very accommodating and drinks came out quickly. I will say this though, I left my debit card there. In the little check envelope. The next day someone went to Nordstroms and bought 700 dollars worth of clothes. I'm pretty sure it was a host staff. So, be careful leaving stuff behind.

Very nice and classy seafood restaurant. Their oysters are super fresh and they have a huge variety. If you're not a seafood lover they still have steak options as well. The crudo sampler was delicious and very creative. It is a bit pricey so be prepared to drop some money. They are also very accommodating to allergies. I have a severe dairy allergy and they were very nice and clean.

CRAB LEGS! Filet mignon! Seafood tower! So delicious. The crab leg was so juicy and warm, it was the best. Their bread pudding was also probably the best I’ve had so far. Edit: went again recently and the food was as delicious as ever! The spiny lobster was to die for and you can get the fish ceviche style! Scallops were tastier than the tuna and octopus was very soft. Love it

Excellent seafood dishes but also great burgers. We had burgers for lunch twice and they were great. The lobster bite appetizer is fantastic. The Chilean sea bass was exceptional.

I like the ambiance and the atmosphere and seems like a great place to have small meetings or celebrate a special day. Our waitor was extremely nice and always checked in on us every so often; our water glass was never empty. We went here for a birthday and had 5 different dish as well as 2 appetizers. My favorite was their poke appetizer and the entrees were ok.

Came for happy hour for oysters and calamari. The champagne was great and so were the oysters & calamari. This place is pretty pristine and I would love to come back to try other food

We walked-in after 9pm, so lucky they still seated us. One of the oyster kind wasn’t fresh and sands inside, which our server replaced it with his recommendation. Otherwise everything we ordered was tasty. Good variety of menu and 5 stars to the servers. We will visit again!

Unbelievable. Food and service was horrible. Was told they can accommodate 15+ people. Took over 2 hours for our food and my friends fell asleep. When the food arrived nothing on our table was good. Got the most dry risotto ever.. I would not come back and would never recommend.

Really enjoyed the service and food. Suggestions from the server were spot on and he was very attentive from arrival to departure. The sea bass was cooked to perfection and the scallops were not only presented well but tasted fantastic. The gin gin mule was a 10/10. Would definitely recommend this restaurant.

If you love seafood, please visit this place. Amazing food, great ambience and nice people. It is also in the heart of downtown LA. The service is a bit slow however, it is totally worth it. Definitely recommend the octopus, the oyster sampler( has a mix of East and west coast ) and the caramel bread pudding

Beet salad with tandoori yogurt and salmon as the entree. DEEELISH. Friends got the fish and chips. The chips were shared amongst the group. Water Grill is on the pricey side, but I will be back. I was also impressed with their bourbon selection. Great people watching too.

My recent visit to a high-end restaurant was disappointing. Despite a lovely ambiance and attentive service, the food quality fell short. Dishes were overly oily, undercooked, and excessively salty. It was not the fine dining experience I had expected. More

My first time trying Water Grill. We were a party of 6, so we got a chance of trying a whole bunch of different appetizers. Most of them were really goodappetizers, especially the crab cakes. However, main course lacked a bit of seasonings.

Food is great as always, variety of oysters is incomparable to others local places. I've been a customer for over 15years. I have to say this was the worst customer service experience. I really don't know where to start on how bad it was.

The water grill specializes in seafood, including sushi, oysters and several types of shellfish. I had the tuna poke to start and it was perhaps one of the best over had. Very large portion compared to other places. Would have been enough

Nice interior, classy. Came in with a reservation on a busy Saturday night, no wait. Our group ordered a few different entrees. King crab was over cooked, seafood soup was overcooked as well and lacked any real flavor, had to add salt.

Very nice traditional sea food restaurant, a little pricey but not for the location and the quality of the place, service or the food. I had the scallops and they were excellent.
