This place is awful, I flew in from Toronto to Calgary only tp realise that I dropped my credit card in one of my winter jacket. All the hotels I went to refused to do anything until they saw a physical card, so I went to Wicked Hostel and they accepted to type in just the long 16 digit for payments (was a good thing but not so good when I went inside). I paid for two nights because I had an interview on a Monday and I arrived Saturday night. Not clean a clean place, that night the Flames played a game, so many drunk fans lodged there drinking. Washrooms not clean, kitchen not too clean, infact they place lived up to it's name Wicked. I managed to get to a friend that night who can help me use his credit card the next day to pay for another hotel. I told reception at Wicked Hostel that I need my money for the 2nd night. She told me it is non refundable, I told her I endured a horrible night and absolutely nobody was going to force me sleep a 2nd night there. She reluctantly refunded my $49.50 which I paid for a shared bedroom with 6 bungs. I ended up paying for a decent single room hotel for $55 and had peace of mind that Sunday night. Will NEVER recommend Wicked Hostel even if it is $10 per night MY RESPONSE to the owners unfortunate reply below: So you had a lady last weekend also complaining about your awful smelling place? So you have gone global. To start with I am a man not a lady, my name is Diana-Abasi not Diana. Your response to awful services is very pathetic, you should be apologising to customers and not reinforcing your poor services. I am only reviewing a pending review Google reminded me to, I never said I was at your terrible place last weekend. I arrived in Calgary Saturday 13th April 2019 and the Flames played that night. I was at your smelly place with druggies everywhere that morning at 12:30 am or there about on the 14th April. I have attached my RBC Mastercard statement to proof I paid for two nights there. You can also see the refund for one night on that statement. If this is how you respond to criticism by abusing customers who give you negative reviews then your business will never change. I don't know the lady that was there last week. If you told your staffs not to accept credit card numbers for fraud reasons then that's okay, I even mentioned that it was a good thing they did but when I went inside I understood why they accepted because they just want they money to offer poor services. I would have been better off sleeping in a couch in a hotel lobby than passing the night there. Your business is awful, smelly kitchen could cause health hazard, dirty washrooms and all that. The staff who was in the morning after I slept was very insulting and told me I can NEVER get a refund and I explained to her calmly that no responsible person can pass a night in that place and I was ready to even let go of the money before she agreed to refund it. I bet you the owner don't sleep there, it is only a business premises for you. And if you do, then you are one hell of a dirty person

Good location and quite clean, other than that, there's not thing to write home about. Electricity outlets are not available for all beds, and it's 2022. You cannot charge your phone, camera, laptop without going to kitchen or common area, like washroom or hallway. Staffs are not very conscientious, to put it lightly. It was a 2 nights stay. The first day I checked in, I left my luggage in the storage room and made it very clear that I need to leave early in the morning the day I'm checking out. I made sure they know this on the second day as well. Since the staffs are not attending the reception during the night time. I double checked with them, they said they'd pull my luggage out of the storage room the night before I check out. This morning, when I came down stairs. You guessed it, my luggage was still locked inside the storage. I had to knock through all the dorm room 6am in the morning to see if there's a staff staying there. Luckily there was a young lady, who I presumed working part time and staying in hostel, has the key. But still, I almost missed my flight and had to pay 45$ for Uber instead of the buss pass I bought. Should I have missed the flight, there'll be a 300$ reschedule fee, a 700$ for one week hotel stay in Calgary, because the flight only run once per week. And a 150$ for a re-test for Covid. I would have also need to reschedule my quarantine hotel when I arrive at the destination. Which would also cost 500$~1000$ more.

The pros are it's a fairly good central location and the beds are super comfy. Free breakfast is good but can get busy. The free laundry service is exceptional. There are a few cons. The shower/bathrooms do get cleaned once a day but they seem to get dirty pretty quickly with the volume of people in the hostel. People say this is "cheap", well maybe for Canada but not in general terms, for $40+ a day you expect a clean bathroom. They also accommodate long stay residents, which tend to be aussies who sit around most of the day looking for new jobs and seem to think the world owes them something. I also had an issue with a girl in my room, who seemed to have quite severe mental health issues where she spent all night talking to her mum on the phone about which hospital she needed to go to. One guy told her to be quiet multiple times before he vacated the room. This isn't the hostels fault but be aware of some of the people it attracts. Some nights the noise levels are not kept to the curfew. It kinda feels like it's run by people who just need a place to sleep themselves before they move on. It's OK, if it's the cheapest place to stay in Calgary by a fair amount then the few niggles can be put aside.

The hostel location is prime. It is in the Calgary downtown area. Great location. You can walk several minutes to other places in downtown. The hostel is very clean, offering free breakfast, and offering free laundry if you live more than three days. People come and go if they only do a short-stay, but there are long-term tenants as well. Staff members are nice, and answer questions. People living here have diverse background, and they care about each other. The hostel offers different social activities around the week. Free wifi, and you can cook by yourself as well. Space for eating and self-studying are sufficient. If you live with others in an 8-people dormitory, you can still buy a lock to save your valuables in the individual cabin on the wall above your bed. The 8-people dormitory also has outlet near each bed to charge phones and so on. All positive experiences as this is a different life style.

Wicked Hostel is a really nice place to stay. Actually one of the best places I have stayed in Canada... Its very special for me as I have spend my first few days here at this beautiful place when i first landed in Canada ..I have made many friends here...You will feel like a family member here... The staff is awesome and really friendly and helpful. The kitchen is always clean and good equipped. The rooms are really nice and clean. They also have a gorgeous in-house brewery for pub crawls on Fridays & Pizza-Bowling on Saturdays. And you´ll find enough computers upstairs to write home how good this hostel is :) Axel is the coolest dude you will ever find..Meet him once you are there and you gonna love his sense of Humor... Special thanks to Niina - Classy and Fabulous girl

My honest review? Yeah ok, it's in a good location and you get free breakfast but there is a very high tolerance for loud noise past 11pm (currently 1am as I write this review due to lack of sleep from noise) no night watch or security so tells you everything you need to know honestly...they offer laundry service but they wash it for you? Super weird but great if you don't care about your clothes. All in all, out of the two hostel's in Calgary, the other one is $5 more but you get bigger lockers and zero tolerance for noise past a certain time.

Had a family member book here 5 days in advanced, with emails to prove it, only to have his reservation cancelled the day before his stay. When I called to inquire, the lady on the phone was rude and enforced to me that she would have replied to the booking ‘right away’ when they had noticed something was missing, when they had in fact (with receipt proof) waited 5 days and waited until the day before the event/ stay to cancel his booking. Very unprofessional. I understand this is a hotel for specific stays (for non Alberta residents) but to cancel a stay that wasn’t fixed immediately (and not 5 days later) from an Alberta resident, and to cancel a stay the day before the event/booking, without offering alternative options, is not okay.

As perfect as it could be! The room was clean, so was the bathroom. The staff was supportive and responsive. Was amazed by their service. Many options for breakfast, as well. Highly recommended!

Safety
Didn't encounter or sense any issues of safety. The crowd in the hostel seemed good, as well.
Walkability
The hostel is at a convenient distance from government offices (such as US consulate office), retail shops, food stores, etc.
Noteworthy details
I didn't get to experience it but heard that Fridays are the days for free beer in the hostel.

Outrageously pretentious. Was really underwhelmed when the woman running the desk suggested that my license -- to prove that I'm not a resident of AB -- was a fake. She then went on to tell me that the policy of only allowing travelers was because "we want this place to have a really cool traveller and backpacking culture. Like, you know, me: I'm from Germany." It was hard to want to stay thereafter, and I've stayed at a tonne of hostels and never encountered someone with quite her finesse. Maybe she was having a bad day. Maybe I was having a bad day. But she definitely had no chill for someone who considers themselves a "traveller", and it totally rubbed me the wrong way. Overall, seemed like a decent enough place.

  • Dana Thomas

I stayed here for a Saturday night in an 8 bed bunk room. Mattress was so comfy and quite new. Room was quiet and secure. No plug next to my bed but there's enough around the room. No Aircon and temperature was okay with the window open, can't imagine it would be nice in summer and the common areas were all very warm, would benefit from some airflow. Bathrooms were pretty good, all clean and tidy. Staff were great and lots of social events each night but quiet enough as well. Free parking after 8pm and on Sundays on the street out front. A great time, would definitely come back.

It was a great hostel to stay at. Beds were comfy, a fun environment with events throughout the week (sadly only was passing through so could only stay the one night). A great price with a good simple breakfast in the morning. The wrist bands you get to enter the building/room was a great no keycard/key hassle! Only real thing lacking was there was no plug by my bed and the extension cable there did not work. Other than that great staff, she showed me the room and walked me through everything! As well very helpful/friendly with answering questions for parking my motorcycle etc.

Wicked Hostels Calgary was just what I was looking for. I wanted a cheap place near Saddledome so I could watch the Flames game and also pretty close to the airport. Parking is limited there but I got a spot and was able to walk to the game. It looks like the hostel offers great activities throughout the week but I didn't participate. I also missed breakfast but it is included, as well as bedding and towels. They even provide complimentary laundry service. My four-person room only had one other guy so it was nice and quiet!

I really enjoyed my stay here! My luggage got delayed on my flight in and Jeff the owner kept my spirt high and he was more then happy for the hostel to take my luggage for me when the airport would deliver. It's big but not to big if that makes sense? Different places to hang out. Definitely a place to people, yes it can get noisey but it's a hostel! If you want to get some sleep then or rest then maybe it's not the exact place for you. I found it to be a really good location. Jeff thanks for a great stay! All the best!

Staff are super helpful, I was worried I couldn’t get in after midnight but Megan was great on the front desk and made me feel comfortable and gave me a heaps of recommendations of things to do while in Calgary and Alberta in general. Will definitely stay again if I’m back in the city.

Great location right across the road from the Scotiabank Saddledome where the Calgary Flames play and where the world famous rodeo is held in July. NOTE only foreigners can stay there, no Canadians is their rule. You have to show your foreign ID when you check in and leave as a 'deposit' (or $20) for the room key. Great vibe there certainly and extremely social with events planned every night if you want to join in. Dorm room was as expected and breakfast is pretty standard stuff. Short walk to downtown. I'd definitely stay there again no question.

  • Anonymous Last

Good setup: electronic entry, small lockers for each bed, individual kitchen baskets. Staff very helpful. Had free simple breakfast. Bathroom could use a few more hooks but not a big deal. Generally clean. Location wise, great downtown central area. Best without a car otherwise downtown parking is available at Calgary rates. Note their location is different now than a couple years before, so there's lots of older photos that do not apply. Also they do not accept Alberta residents.

We are the hostel that makes you feel apart of the family, unless you're canadian, you can go sleep outside we don't care that you budgeted for 2 weeks in Calgary temporarily in hostels and we don't care that your international ID was issued In another province. Your shoulder bag which you travel the world with is just not enough of a backpack. Just came from staying in many different hostels all over the west? We don't care. You're not part of our family if you're canadian.

Stayed in my fair share of Hostels all over the world and this is by far one of the best. Doesn't look too fancy from the outside but don't let that fool you. Very well maintained with friendly fellow traveler staff. Has free wifi, computers, internet phone, continental breakfast, parking and yes they even wash and dry your clothes for free! Great location right across from "the dome", train station and right on 17 ave so Calgary's best bar's and restaurants are within walking distance. Will be back for sure. Thanks guy's

  • Tom KP

It was such a awesome time!! The people are all great. You have a really good WiFi-connection and a phone where you can call everywhere you want to in the world. They also have computers and printer/scanner there. It works all perfectly, I've done everything ;). One of the best parts is the laundry, they do free for you. Its fast and its awesome, especially for travelers, who don't have a possibility to do laundry. One night for 30-35$. You won't find a cheaper and better place!!!

  • Kadeem

I was greeted by someone who didn't seem like they were im a good mood. They showed me around the place quickly and then brought me to my room. They barely cracked a smile. The room I stayed in had 2 bunk beds and was super small. My roomates were all cool and we got along well. The price was very affordable and fair. This was my first, and probably my last stay at a hostel. Not that they're a bad place to stay... They just aren't for me.

I was really impressed with my stay. The beds were extremely comfortable, and I was excited to see how clean the Hostel was and all the great people I met..I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a reasonable place to rest there head and feel safe. I was in Calgary a year ago, from Oregon, for a show literally across the street. Perfect spot. Nice safe space to go to. Comfortable beds (with plug in at each bed), hot water, good people, great conversations. I didn't eat there, as I was out and about most of the time, but no complaints. The wall is pretty cool too. I can't wait to be able to go back.

Very decent hostel! Just across the street from the Stampede grounds. They do your laundry for free, free breakfast and free parking! The place is clean and the service is excellent. The economy rooms are located directly beside the common areas and the entrance. Therefore it can get a noisy at night when people come back from the bar. I would recommend the rooms on the second floor. The rooms aren't to big for 8 bunks.

  • Jack McKeague

Stayed here during my time in Calgary and it was a pleasent stay. Met fellow travellers and had a good time with them and interesting conversations. Facility has free breakfast, wifi, showers, laundry (free if you're staying longer than two days I beleive, don't quote me on that). Location is right in downtown. Very affordable, you can't go wrong with this hostel.

I really don’t understand the 4.3 stars, the bathrooms were so dirty, it was a nightmare to take a shower, clothes on the floor, hairs everywhere, looks like it wasn’t cleaned for a long time !!! What a great hostel! We planned to stay here for a couple days but extended as we enjoyed it so much. Great location and the owners are amazing so knowledgeable and helpful for anything. We really enjoyed the events the hostel put on. Made it easy to make friends at the hostel and made the stay very comfortable. We also met another jack the cutest baby ever. Can't wait to come back one day!

Service wasn't greating for strangers. Travellers seems loving gaz and nuclear energies, well, I guess it is this city effect. Rooms are very small and thigh, Walls are carton. You hear everything from all other rooms; even see the light of them through the ceiling! Not clean. I strongly suggest the other hostel: hosteling International. Same price, better location, much better quality.

  • Adel Tabibz

Very good location. Clean sheets, dorm and kitchen. Very well done organized. Fair breakfast. I think Niina was in charge partially when we were there. She is the spreat of the hostel and made it friendly environment and clean. They do your laundry for free. Also, you may be entertained at early night with some social games. It was funny and educational. Completely recommendable.

  • Camorree Tinsley

Great place to stay for a few nights. Good wifi. Staff is good with keeping linens and rooms clean. The showers could use more frequent attention, but otherwise it was nice. Right in downtown near bus stops and the local train. Also, free breakfast, and free events organized by the hostel so you can enjoy your time in Calgary.

Could get decent sleep, helpful staff and free breakfast/clothes cleaning is good. Main downsides is the bathroom, which needs bigger shower area as not enough space. Also would need either some clarification that it is indeed a party hostel, or have a variety in the socials for different types of people would be nice.

I unfortunately stayed here awhile ago and suffered a horrible, traumatic experience staying in this hostel from two racist staff members. One made it his mission to make my stay complete hell! Clean rooms and showers. Comfortable beds. Very friendly staff. Its definitely a party hostel so if you're looking for a good nights sleep this probably isn't the place to go!

  • Kris Chan

The staff was friendly and helpful and the general atmosphere of the hostel was great. The accommodations were very good and they include a general breakfast in the morning C:

Very friendly staff. Free breakfast. Clean bedsheets. Only thing was that the rooms got really cold in the night, but they had a very warm duvet that was enough for the night!

  • Eamon Lesperance

2 min walk to the LRT system and you're right on the edge of downtown.

Friendly staff. Clean room. Clean bedsheets (however they don't change blanket cover). The A/C is loud and right above your head so it's breezy and windy. Small parking lot.

  • Roxanne Mailhot

Everything was fine. Maxime made it way much easier and cooler than some other person's. But other than that very nice!

Cant stop coming back, 3rd time back specifically because everything about this hostel is truly wicked. Great people, amazing atmosphere and kick arse outings

  • Paulina Martinez

The location and the staff is great, but the breakfast is very very disapointing. There is no individual light or night table in the shared room. Tiny lockers

  • anna

Great hostel, for the price you can't complain. A really friendly team of staff, especially Olivia.
