In June 2020 my family had a memorial service arranged for my beloved aunt at Willamette National Cemetery. The prearranged day should have been one of peace, reflection and respectfulness for our loved one who had passed on. Unfortunately we were not given that solemn time. There was strife in the family so Willamette National Cemetery was notified in advance that there could be a disturbance that day. They assured us if anyone interfered in our private service they would be immediately escorted out by the military police. We mistakenly relied on that assurance, because on that set day when we arrived at our assigned location, our 10 seats (Covid protocol restricted us to 10) were already occupied by those same family members we warned, not only the cemetery personnel about, but the mortuary where we had just come from having had a viewing, who were also there on site. When we told the cemetery personnel who was standing near by what was happening she shrugged her shoulders and said there would be no military police escorting anyone out, and the woman from the mortuary acted oblivious. Meanwhile the minister is confused (we never met him personally due to Covid or explained the family dynamics), while those sabotaging our service acted rudely to us as though we were the ones causing the disturbance. There were 3 in our 10 person party who were elderly, needing walkers, canes and oxygen, yet when push came to shove, we were the ones escorted out (the cemeteries solution to the situation) to the gravesite, to stand in the street with a series of loud cars, motorcycles and machinery noises in the background. We also had to wait for the minister to complete a service for those same family members who had taken over what we had prearranged and paid for in the ministers fees, flower costs, my aunts casket, travel fees for out of state family attending, equaling approximately $2,600.00. That day sadly turned out to be anything but respectful and dignified. Without a doubt, Willamette National Cemetery is a beautiful and well maintained resting place for those who were in the military. I just wish my aunts service had not been unnecessarily marred like it was, leaving her devoted, loving and caring family in deep distress when all that upheaval could have been avoided had adequate questions been asked up front and disorder properly managed.

The two times I have been here it was immaculate. When we held a service for my father everything was well organized and went very quickly. They have narrow slots of time and everything is done in a very rigid and practice manner. It adds a level of gravity and seriousness to the grave side service. The second time was to visit his graveside. It was the Saturday before Memorial day and the flags were out. It was really nice to see. There were roads closed and blocked encouraging drivers to go in certain directions (I assume because it is a very busy weekend for visitors) they also had porta potty available in the lower back part which is far away from the main office and bathrooms. I don't know if it was because of COVID or simply because it was a Saturday, but the office was closed. There is a place to locate graves near the bathroom or you can use an online website. It is a large cemetery and quite hilly. If you have trouble walking I encourage parking as close as you can to the burial section. The roads are not grid, but loop and curve. Give yourself time to wind through. I got a bit turned around simply because of how they closed certain roads to direct traffic.

On a recent visit to WNC, I noticed two gravesites that had been damaged likely by a mower as the granite was chipped significantly on both gravesites. I did not know the two Navy veterans. As a former Army officer, I felt it was my duty to let WNC know about the damage. I have visited WNC on many occasions to pay my respects to several friends and to honor those brave Soldiers, Airmen, Naval, Marines, Coast Guard, and other brave individuals who bravely served our country and rest eternally at WNC and in the hearts and minds of their families. I wrote WNC a letter and attached pictures of the damaged gravesites a few days ago and I received a call today, June 17, 2020 that new gravestones have been ordered and they will be replaced with new ones within two weeks. The prompt response of WNC is in the finest traditions of military service and honoring our beloved Veterans. All the WNC personnel deserve a giant THANK YOU for the pride, reverence, and responsiveness to provide new gravestones to these two Navy Veterans and to this hallowed place of honor. THANK YOU AGAIN. YOU ARE THE BEST !!!!!!!

My mother is buried in the mausoleum and had several problems on different occasions. There grounds keepers go threw. And pick up and throw away flowers, statues, ect. Its a shame to see 2 trash cans full of flowers alot of them still fresh. I had a huge arrangement of expensive artificial roses recently with two large statues and angels that got thrown away. That's steeling in my book . I complained to the staff and was told I could put up a sign for them to leave the stuff alone. But they have to clean and might not know where to put the stuff back..The walk way is plenty wide enough to put things on other side and move back. On another occasion I went there and they had folding chairs in the middle with another basket of mine with others decorated a different hallway, with my moms angel and another angel with it a few stones down, on top the trash can.I complained that time also with the staff who could care less, and said they would have a talk with the grounds keepers. I asked for the person in charge to call me about it . And never got a call back.

It was my first time at the Cemetery - we got a map, but it was raining quite hard and we got confused. We asked a groundskeeper for help and he spent at least 20 minutes trying to find the grave, including involving one of his coworkers. Finally they realized we were completely in the wrong section so they gave us further directions. When we got to the correct area we were still confused and we asked another set of workers. The told us we were close, but we needed to turn around. The lead guy said, "we are going that way, so just follow us"! He helped my friend get her car turned around and then they drove up to the parking area and motioned for us to park beside them. They then walked behind the wall and lead us directly to the crypt. Everyone was extremely polite and helpful! What a great crew!

I would have given 5 stars because I usually have no complaints and this is a very beautiful resting place for my parents, however, I visited on Dec 30, 2017 and was.so shocked to see the flowers that I left on Dec 14.were still there dead and wilted. I was under the impression that they cleaned up dead wilted flowers on a weekly basis. My father has been here for almost 10 years and I have never had this experience before. There were several "vases" with dead wilted flowers on other sites. I feel this is an insult to all those who proudly served this country to leave dead wilted flowers on their above ground grave sites. It all looked a mess!! I was very sad and disappointed especially since this was during the holidays.

Beautiful place on the hill. But I have been to a funeral twice in a year, one for my grandpa then my grandma and both times we were rushed out of the service with no real time to console each other because they had another service scheduled. We were also not allowed to go up to the covered area where the service was being held to put my grandma’s favorite flowers around the area. We ended up sneaking up and no one was there so why not? They had us wait at the main parking area until allowed to go up and strangely since we are in Oregon, they have no covered area for us to gather and wait so we consoled each other in the rain. Guess they expect a grieving family to remain separated in their cars.

  • Brian Harrison

The funeral was rushed. Not our fault. Director was rude. I specifically asked for the landscapers riding mowers to please stop for they were working right where we were having our funeral. It was not peaceful. I had to shout over the noise. We had a special song to play that was compromised the time snd vibe…wtf? How is this ok ? the Director to not follow through on her promise to make them stop. Needless to say you guys dropped the freaking ball. I understand you have to try to make things run efficiently there but your client services or abysmal.

Located on Mt. Scott in SE Portland Oregon with great views. I take my Mom on Memorial Day to visit her parents and other relatives. Parking is an issue, but it is a beautiful service to honor those who have served. An honor guard, highland band, military flyover, a 21 gun salute and a special guest (The Governor, Senator, etc) are some highlights each year. The cemetery has certain restrictions on what you can put on the graves. A great place to honor those who have served and their families.

I visited my dad's gravesite today, a few days before Memorial Day. There was a guy mowing in the area. When he noticed me he stopped the mower and came over to talk to me and asked me if I would prefer that he stopped and came back later. I thanked him and said that he should continue with his job. He did go ahead and mow the strip where my dad's stone was so I could place flowers there. It was very thoughtful and I appreciated it.

I have been to many services here and most are only somewhat organized as far as where to go and when. But today was honesty a disaster, 3 admin all giving different driving directions, poor communication with the family on the whole process on what is already a very hard day. My hope is that you all get more organized in all areas! Family’s don’t deserve this type of service, so disappointed and hurt for everyone.

Very nice, clean kept, and Quiet for a resting place for my dad..although, both times I have been there, I was sinking into the grass.. I had to figure out a dry path to and from my dad because I had open-toe shoes and ended up covered in wet mud.. I am frustrated. Living in Eugene makes a bit harder to make the trip. But it would be ideal if I didn't have to walk in mud to visit my dad...

I went to visit my my parents burial site for the first time and I was concerned about finding the site. While driving around a gentleman working there offered me assistance in finding my parents burial site, the man's name is Don, this is minimum a great employee not to mention a great human, if there are more ppl like this working here we are all blessed! Thank you Don, Brad Grier

We have three immediate relatives and a very close friend who was a WWII veteran at Willamette National. In all the dealings we have had with the cemetery and cemetery personnel, they have been above and beyond in their courtesy and compassion for us. I will be interred there as well and have total confidence that my remains and my wife's will be handled with dignity and respect.

  • Bill Nielsen

We warned the cemetery that another group would try to come and cause a disturbance. We were told that the military police were very strict and if they created a disturbance they would be escorted out. We were also told that 10 people max would be strictly enforced due to the Coronavirus. Neither turned out to be true. On the plus side it is a beautiful cemetery.

  • Eric Anderson

We had a service for my mother a few weeks ago at the cemetery. The service was great, the staff was amazingly supportive and courteous. The grounds at the cemetery are pristine and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. To all of those staff and support staff thank you for your attention to detail and devotion to helping our service members and families.

I am often at this cemetery for burials as I am part of the Patriot Guard Riders. Additionally I am up there for Memorial Day and Wreaths Across America with Civil Air Patrol. They have always been professional and respectful of the families needs. It is a beautiful location on the side of a hill. I also have family buried there as does a friend of mine.

  • Karla Jones

Dad's burial service at Willamette National Cemetery was beautiful and very efficient with the Funeral Director's help. He guided us through everything from beginning to end. The honor guard's presence and flag ceremony was very moving and so appreciated. They allowed our family to provide pallbearers, which my brothers had wanted to do.

  • D F

My husband was loved by many and the amount of people at his service reflected that. Sadly, the staff was not prepared for such a large turnout and it became a circus. Please have a better system to handle large groups. The military honors were beautiful but the chaos getting family and friends to the correct shelter still upsets me.

  • Stacey Wineburg

They treated my Father and my Mother with the greatest respect through the entire service that will not soon be forgotten. The honor guard was fantastic and treated them with great respect. My dad would have been so impressed and honored! He was very proud to have served his country. Thankyou all very much for what you all do!

  • Stephen C. Schultz

This is a very beautiful Cemetery. Well kept with obvious attention to detail. From the military escort to taps to the gun salute to the presenting of the flag to my aunt, the service was respectful, honorable and patriotic. Even if you don't have a funeral to attend, it is worth a short drive through.

Happy Veterans day Dad/Grandpa. We Love and Miss you and Mom/Grammy! Forever in our Hearts you both will stay!❤ This place has always been such a nice Peaceful and Beautiful place through the years on any given day. Thank you all at Willamette National, you all are appreciated!

Wonderful Memorial Day Program , thank you for honoring our veterans in such a wonderful way. Director Jared Howard left us with a quote about remembering our veterans. As I turned to leave I saw the back of the veteran pictured below - both this Veteran and Director reminded us in a wonderful manner.

  • Michael Bielaski

Great cemetery, grounds look great. Staff who escort you to the funeral ceremony are nice, professional, etc. The Honor Guard did a great job. The funeral ceremonies are limited to a 30 minute duration - the reasons are available online - no issues, just be prepared to be efficient.

  • Kathy Oberst

Visited the site where my husband is interned on April 8th for the first time since his committal that was on January 29, 2018. The committal service was beautiful and the location is peaceful. I miss my husband but know this was the perfect location for him to be.

  • Paula Bergstrom

This is Oregons Vetwtans cemetery. Over 900 acres. It is well maintained, a beautiful location. The workers do an excellent job, and quickly move when they see you approaching a grave in an area they are working.

  • Scott F

The grass isn't kept, for whatever reason they are stacking two services in one hour when there are hours when there aren't services. This used to be a national cemetery that cared about honoring veterans.

  • Amber Stice

Can't really say I loved it, it's a cemetery. But my dad is now buried there and I appreciate how well they maintain the grounds. They also gave him a wonderful spot with a great view!

  • Betty Calvin

When I was a little girl I thought that when memorial day came, that's when God came and took care of the souls of the departed and brought them to the heavens above. Once a year!
