Check in went well - still using the old large heavy room weight and metal keys. Elevator is not working, based on past comments, appears this has been an issue for quite some time - thus the room on the top floor was not as appealing, but fortunately very light luggage to lug up the stairs. Room had a musty smell as soon as I walked in. The top cover of the bed had stains in several places. But room overall appeared cleaned and well kept. Air con worked well as it was quite hot in Dire Dawa the few days I was there. No tea kettle but two bottles of water were provided which was key given my next discovery. The bathroom was frankly one of the worst I've stayed in throughout Africa. I turned on the sink tap and a brown tinged water came up, on top of a stopped up sink, therefore the foul smelling water took about five minutes to drain. The toilet did not have enough pressure to fully flush and the showerhead had one "stream" out of the entire showerhead that actually sprayed water (again brown and a foul smell). Further insult to injury, when I woke up the next morning still before dawn and switched on the light, roaches were scurrying within the bathroom when I proceeded there. The breakfast was included, and seemed to have a good selection of breakfast items and you could order eggs to order included in the price I had negotiated. The dinner I had was also good, consisting of local Ethiopian dishes. Staff at both dinner and breakfast seemed very attentive, and most apologetic for the constant flies on and around the table. A good bug zapper would come in handy in the eating areas in my opinion. Perhaps only my room, but I would not recommend staying here again until some of the basic room issues were resolved (bathroom water and tap/toilet issues, sheets/top cover) and addressing of flies and bugs noted throughout my stay being on food and around my room.

BEST ESTABLISHED HOTEL IN DIRE. Samarat Hotel is our go to hotel when in Dire-Dawa. We have been staying here for a more than 3 occasions. What makes Samrat hotel different from the rest in town are: - A very professional staff from the security officers at the front to managers on duty who make sure your needs are met -Location of the hotel close to many other places - stores, banks, pharmacy, hospital, and other amenities -Complementary breakfast included with the room - their fresh food and juices done on daily basis -Safe hotel -Rooms are spapcious and come with AC for hot Dire weather -It has a big pool in the back -spacious lobby where traditional coffee is served -Plenty of food items to choose from - their pizza was great! -Service standards is unmatched by any other places we have been to in town (this sets them apart) -If you like night life, there is a club next door for your entertainment All is all, a great hotel, a home away from home for us when in Dire-Dawa. Many tourists from all over the world who are there for business or tourism seem to select this hotel for the above reasons. If you want a decent, reliable, and excellent place to stay, choose Samrat in Dire. We would recommend highly and can't wait to visit again.

The best in Dire Dawa despite some evident flaws. Staff is very nice and helpful, the restaurant offers a wide selection of dishes cooked at the moment, the rooms are spacious and decently clean. Affordable. Having said that, there are flaws which would be easily overcome if the owner would invest in some repairs. First of all, the water supply in the bathrooms is insufficient for a good shower, still, the water spills on the floor through the poorly fitted bathtubs. The result is that the bathrooms are flooded and the water filters through the floor and wide damp stains appear on the ceiling of the restaurant and reception salon downstairs. The air conditioning system also leaks water inside the rooms, sign of dirt in the filters or pipes. The water in the swimming pool is a biohazard chemical weapon: no chlorine at all! Hope to see improvements on my next trip.

The hotel is located in a good neighbourhood. The elevator did not work and we were given rooms on the top floor. There was an attendant sitting outside the elevator informing us that it was out of order. The internet was good and the bed comfortable. There was no mosquito net in my room but a number of mosquitoes. I was so tired after a day of driving to the bush all day, I had no energy to go down many floors to complain. I went off to sleep but was woken up by the constant humming and mosquito bites. Had a hard night. The water pressure in the washroom was almost non existent. Took a shower with a small drip from the shower head. The towels looked washed but were brown from being in existence for many washes. One night was enough for me.

Great location, super friendly staff and basic but good rooms with all the necessary amenities (including airconditioning!). The bar area is nice, and if you don't like the sound of music at night just bring earplugs. The food in the restaurant is great (the Ethiopian food at least)! Especially the fillet tibs. Would recommend to stay here. Basic room is 1400 ETB p/n including breakfast, so don't follow the prices on the website.

Many of the other reviews are unfairly benchmarking this hotel against Sheratons and Hiltons. If you moderate your expectations, the hotel is clean, well-located, and offers relatively reasonable accommodations in what is an otherwise small city with few places to stay. The value for money is also excellent. The breakfast is simple but very delicious. The restaurant food is also excellent for lunch and dinner, with some really tasty Indian options. On the whole a great place, and we'd go back there again.

It's the one hotel in Dire Dawa you can actually go to as someone foreign. Giving it 4 stars due to relative comparison not from global perspective. The rooms were decent the beds clean, showers working. The food is Ethiopian. Only did breakfast...where you can get French toast, omelette coffee plus the Ethiopian breakfast cuisine. Not a fan of the cuisine, so can't say much about it without being biased. Charged almost 2000 ETB per night including breakfast

I stayed at the hotel for two days during a business trip to Dire Dawa. Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the receptionists who have given us great first impression of the Hotel. We have also met the General Manager who was very humble and hospitable. He has surprised us by upgrading our rooms to spacious suites. The staffs were also friendly and cooperative. They made every effort to maintain our comfort at all times. The food at the restaurant was great. I would definitely choose this hotel in my next visit!

They delete bad reviews to make the place look good but the rooms are very hot the fan releases warm air there’s no room service they don’t even answer and if they do they will take ur order and never bring you the food elevators don’t work so you got to go up and down to order they’re very slow for the price you pay

A three star at best. The service is the only thing 5 star. Sometimes hot water and elevator didn't work. Internet at the business center was slow but to my surprize i had to come back after a day of leaving because i couldn't find anything better in the city. For Dire Dawa its 5 star but don't get your hopes up thinking its 4-5 star. I stayed at the most expensive room too.

The customer service is very good, the rooms are clean. The place can use a renovation but it's fine. We used the double room for 2.2k. Breakfast was good and they have a swimming pool. Good location. Overall good experience, I will recommend it.

Friendly staff. The good is good, the weather is hot, rooms are clean, it has a pool as well. Now going back to the friendly staff, there is one thing that will always make you smile and that's the people. They are really humble people, they are really good people and I know if I could acquire some of their characters, it will make me a better person :)

One of the nicest hotels in Dire Dawa with an Indian flair. Fairly well organized and very helpful front desk. The receptionists were very helpful in findng us vehicles for hire for field work near Aysha. The swimming pool at the back is a welcome treat in a hot climate of Dire Dawa. Though pricey, Samrat clearly corresponds this with fine hosting.

A very nice hotel that seems to be well managed, and were things, including wi-fi just work. Well maintained, with nice, well equipped rooms where air-condition is available if you need it. The restaurant has a wide selection of food from international cuisines. For what you get, the price-level is very reasonable.

We stayed in the hotel for few days. They told us they will send airport pickup to the airport which they forgot to do and made us wait for 35min and still didn’t come. The rooms was okay , food was not bad as well. Some of the guards were not respectful

Rooms were nicely decorated but bathrooms lacked consistent water pressure and smelled of mold. The pool was clearly contaminated with some kind of bacteria or algae and the power to the hotel facility was inconsistent.

Old facility, not so good rooms. Restaurant and bar is good though. Also have a good night club but mostly empty. Location is only positive point for this hotel but there are really better hotels around.

My wife and me stayed and enjoyed the Ethiopian Christmas week in Samrat Hotel. We enjoyed the hospitality of ALL Personnel, They were POLITE; ATTENT; FRIENDLY; HELPFULL AND HONEST. Fam. T.Habtemariam.

The place is all about looks. I come to dire every 4 months and the service is terrible and besides the indian food the rest is below average. It used to be good but it's lost it's way.

Spacious room. Wifi mostly worked. Ate in the restaurant most nights, food was good. A bit noisy at the weekend, with pop music beside the pool. Would recommend it.

There is a Kimchi Salad on Menu. Good!

The hotel rooms are very old and the shower is stinky despite very high price for the rooms. The breakfast is very basic not suitable for foreigners.

It’s very crowded during weekends. The food is good. The rooms are kinda old. And the room AC system is so bad. It’s either very hot or very cold.

Nice place in DD. Needs some renovation.
