I had a great experience at Kabuki. The theater is beautifully decorated with Japanese style decor. Its a smaller theater that never gets too busy. Its advisable to buy tickets online as they do sell out. On the ground floor is one theater and the ticket area. They have multiple electronic stations to buy or print tickets. Upstairs is the concession area, more theaters, and the bar. The concession area features typical movie fair like popcorn, soda, chips, etc. The full bar has cocktails, beer on tap, and wine. There is lots of seating in the bar area and is a great place to hang out before or after a movie. The drinks are reasonably priced and the service is great! You can now take drinks into any theater. I went before it was purchased by AMC. Its identically expect for some fo the independent touches. But what you gain with the AMC experience is consistent pricing, rewards, consistent experience, etc. Due to the smaller size and the bar, you still get an amazing local experience. Huge parking lot in the basement or on street meters. Next door are lots of restaurants in the Japantown Center. To those that are complaining about the AMC buy out. They are just complaining as they don't like chains or corporate companies, but want local experience at extremely cheap prices. Many business cannot survive in San Francisco due to the rent and labor cost. This is something we have to accept. AMC runs with less staff to save money, but it's the correct amount of staff needed. No one uses real butter for the popcorn. Real butter is expensive, goes rancid, and must be kept warm. The seats are the same as they have always been. I wouldn't be surprised if AMC remodels soon with the new motorized recliner seats they have in all their other theaters.
The Security guard last night had no sense on how to treat customers who paid to watch a movie. He has no common sense on how to solve a issue if some previous person forgot their purse in the movie theater. We were disturbed while watching a movie because previous customer boyfriend came mutiple time asking me while I was watching movie as to whether I had seen his girlfriends purse. Then the girlfriend came in and sat right opposite to us and kept staring at us for half of the movie because she suspected her purse was in the area we were sitting. The security guard has no common sense on how to solve these kind of issues when encountered in a theater. The securty guard has no courtesy on how to treat customers with respect when they are watching a movie. In the end when the movie ended the previous customer came in our area with a strange attitude and took her purse and the security guard had a strange attitude and behavior towards us too. The security guard should know how to manage such issues and not disturb the current customers who are watching a movie and not show the customer strange attitude and learn how to act respectful towards customers paying AMC to watch a movie. We are not coming to this movie theater again.
This is probably the worst AMC there is. Sounds neat, it's in Japan Town in San Francisco, the lobby is nice, but it really is just a consistently uncomfortable and tiresome place to have to see movies at. Super warm and stuffy inside, year round, with surprisingly poor air circulation for a modern building. So if you gotta see a movie here, make sure you're able to shed a layer, even on cold SF nights. The AC's either been out for years or they keep the heat on. Walls are pretty thin. If the movie in the theatre beside yours has loud scenes, you're gonna hear them. Avoid the smaller theatres on the ground level. Their projectors and audio systems are subpar compared to what's upstairs, and the seats down there are unreasonably loud and motion sensitive. One time I got to experience someone suffering from opiate addiction and/or mental illness, wandering into the middle of a movie on the second floor. She spoke to herself and breathed heavily for a few minutes before heading out on her own will. If you want an adult beverage from the bar, I recommend wine or hard liquor on the rocks because their $20 cocktails are downright awful and it tastes like their beer draft lines don't get cleaned.
This theater was near by to where we were doing some sightseeing, while out visiting San Francisco. I noticed the bar area immediately, it was upstairs from the entrance. It had huge lounge chairs/comfy love seats, and dim lighting. It looked different in comparison to other bars in AMC theaters I’ve been to. But the bar was pretty empty, to the point I thought they had it closed for the day. But what wasn’t empty was the concession area, this theater has a very small concession area, like very small. It doesn’t match the size of the theater, or the volume of guests to the theater. The line went all the way to the door to theater room 1, which was the theater we were viewing our movie. I feel they need to re-evaluate that space, because it doesn’t allow for a good flow of line traffic. Plus it blocks entrance from people coming in the theater, who are making their way up the escalator. The theater room itself was massive, with big comfy seats, and it was clean. I am a frequent movie goer, and frequent AMC theaters. Aside from the very cramped concession area, this is a nice theater.
There is nothing wrong with the theater. The sound quality could be better. I just want to share my experience and inform you how you would be treated. I went there with my wife. A lady lef her purse in between chairs and I didn't notice and sat on the chair. A guy came by in the middle of the movie and said he is looking for his girlfriend's purse. We said we are watching the movie and we didn't notice anything, please do it later. After a few minutes, his girlfriend came and sat close to us. She was looking at us till the end of the movie, something like we were going to run away. She was there with the cinema security. As soon as the movie finished, she came by rudly and found her purse. The security followed her. I didn't notice the purse is there till she found it, but they thought I'm fooling them. Anyways, the best approach from them would be to wait until the end of the movie and do their search without bothering us. Be careful to check your seat before sitting!!!
Best and local theater if you live by it or around. Tickets are fairly high but average for what they are since it's a theater and all. Good thing is that you can reserve seats, and there's even a bar at the top where you can bring drinks into your showing depending on the time you choose for the movie. Seats are good too, but too plush, not dirty and they clean regularly before and after each showing. The area is a bit on the ghetto but the entire area is slowly changing due to gentrification and more middle class families moving into the area improving the overall look and feel of the Fillmore. I have a long history with this theater since I grew up in the city and when this theater used to be called the Kabuki without the dine in sort of thing. Same and great theater just with now more modern amenities.
Went out to the walk-in movie theater (which I rarely do unless it is something I need to see). So went to the AMC Kabuki 8 for the first time in over a decade and it was a weird experience to see how much higher the costs were for the snack counter. Paid $10 for "mac-n-cheese" with bacon bits for a topping. It was a few bites to tell you the truth, but did not want to spend $7 for a small bag of popcorn. The fountain drinks were starting around that price so passed on that. The chairs were comfortable and I sat around the wheelchair seating, since I am disabled and have to use a cane to be mobile. The screen was a smaller one since we were in a mall-like multi-theater. The sound was perfect. The restrooms were modern and clean. I would now make this my 'neighborhood' theater and will go again soon.
This is definitely an old theater in an old building. The AC was out, and the exit escalator was out of order. But the location and the staff, which were all very friendly, make this place worthwhile. The popcorn was hot and fresh, and the soda machine was self-serve, which was nice. The bar is in a nice place to lounge while you wait for your movie to begin, and the bartender makes a mean Gin and Tonic as well! If you're not looking for all the frills and thrills of a fancy theater, this is a great place to pop in quickly. [SN: Go see the little Mermaid. If you love Broadway productions, you love this rendition.]
Very pricey theatre. $15.00 per ticket average and perhaps $2.00 discount for seniors. Parking under the building was $7.00 for about two hours. The automated movie ticket vending machines in lobby are not user friendly and end up making the line move slowly. Helpful staff was an plus. Major complaint is that the sound in the high end theatre is way too loud. Are we all so dead that we want that? The seats are very comfortable and theatres are cozy. Be ready to spend $37.00 including parking for two tickets to the movies. Sheesh. Hope this helps.
Worst movie theater In San Francisco, really if you have the chance to avoid this movie theater please do it, you’ll enjoy the movie better at your house. No air conditioning, the seats were super uncomfortable and bad quality, the quality of the image and sound were the worst and the prices super high even for San Francisco, we paid $38 dollars for 2 tickets for that sauna with bad seats, you really should close that movie theater, it’s old and in bad condition’s. I wish I could give 0 stars!
I love this movie theater! We always buy tickets on the AMC app so we rarely have any trouble with lines even if it is crowded. I love that you can select the exact seats you want for a movie even for $5 Tuesday movie nights. The snacks are good and they have a bar also with a decent selection. The seats are comfortable whether they are in the upstairs balcony for some theaters or just regular. The only real learning curve is realizing that BA15, for example, means Balcony level seat A15.
I looove AMC Kabuki 8! We went to Barbie and the experience was good. The only thing is that the gap between seats are small that its hard to move when going to bathroom during the movies. I wish there was like 5-10 min break in the middle of movies like they do in europe. Anyways, the BIGGEST SUGGESTION is that- get the AMC app, sign up for their free membership so you can get discounted tuesday tickets, free large popcorn refill, earn points for rewards and birthday large popcorn gift.
Overall, I was disappointed in this theater. The seats were comfortable, but the screen in the theater was clearly low quality and damaged. During dark parts of the movie it was really difficult to see what was going on, and the damaged screen was very distracting. It was a cool, classic looking theater, but I wouldn’t come back due to the quality of the watching experience. Also, they really need more than one concession stand. The line was insanely long.
The staff is helpful, the theaters and restrooms are clean, and it's in a convenient location. However, the food choices have changed for the worst and the seats are horrendous leftovers from the 20th century. They will contort your back, ruin your posture, and possibly give you scoliosis. The escalators are very narrow so you can only go up single file. I recommend taking the glass elevator which also gives you an amazing view of the cinema.
This is a wonderful theatre, the sound quality is excellent, the seats recline and are assigned (so no squabbling). Don't be the person who arrives late and has to hunt for their seat! Drinks and food are delicious, you can take drinks into the theatre with you which is awesome. Careful if you order wine, some are extremely pricey ($19/glass!) and $10.99/glass is the cheapest you'll find. Better to buy the bottle for $30 and call it a day.
They have alcohol and snacks, which is great for a change in a movie theater. The balcony area was nice, although sometimes is not clean and you can find food or drinks spilled in the tables from previous customers. Beverages and food is not cheap, as expected. Their seats are by far the most comfortable, with plenty of room for your legs too. Online reservations are easy and convenient. Also you get $2 discount on your parking ticket.
Plus - reserved seating. Nice theaters. Relatively clean. Minus - food options are horrible!!!!! Pizza tasted like those from you junior high lunchroom. In other words, like cardboard. Chicken tenders were cold and tough. Then you get to your seat and there is no room to put anything. Better bet to just eat at one of the nearby restaurants. Food will be much much better. Beer and wine selection not bad though.
The seats are great, the ways to buy the tickets are convenient because there’s so many different ways to buy tickets. The beer and wine selection is great. They have cocktails too. The food is all carbs and sugar, regular movie theater fare. Customer service is all very friendly. Pro tip, there is an elevator in the lobby that goes to all floors and it has a glass encasing so the Vista is beautiful!
Cute venue, but it was not designed/built for movies. The sound system is bad, the seats are not great per 2022 standard. The employee is so good at their job, they forced us to throw away our bobas into the trash, like we would buy your overpriced soda instead? what do you want to achieve? I had never had problem at AMC 16. But she did her job, please give her an Employee of the month or something.
A bit of a splurge, but if you're going out to a movie these days why not make it count? I usually buy Japanese sweets at the mall next door and make that my movie snack. The drinks menu at the bar is short, but I've liked the wine and cider I've had here. The theaters are smaller than a cineplex, so I recommend sitting farther back than you might regularly. Nearly empty during matinees.
Regular here. TIP: wait near the accessible seats (row 5) until the movie starts and if they're not used they are the best seats. At this cinema good seats start least 3 rows back. Great boutique cinema. Theatres are just big enough and the sound is great. Saw Batman and while comments you hear are that it was too dark, at this cinema you could make out all the details.
The charm has been stripped away from the earlier Sundance incarnation. When I visited last week, I was disheartened to see the $6 Tuesdays taken away, the concessions summarily replaced by Coca Cola and subpar popcorn, and poor condition of the individual theatres (seats, sound). I'll come back only if there's a special event or a film not playing anywhere else in SF.
Screens are some of the smallest I have seen in YEARS. Expensive. Sound was terrible, static throughout the entire movie. NOBODY around to talk to because concessions and box office were all closed with not a person in sight even before the movie ended. Website makes it impossible to file a complaint or ask for a refund. Never going here or to another AMC again.
Popular movie theater in Japantown. It boasts several modern theaters across 3 levels, featuring comfortable seats and excellent sound systems. We visited on a weekday evening and found it wise to have purchased our tickets online beforehand, as all theaters seemed busy. While waiting, we enjoyed drinks at the top-floor bar, which were very good.
Lovely theater. The seats are very comfortable, it is quite clean, the service is quite fast, and the food and drinks selection is impressively good. My only complaint is that the movie screens seem to be a bit smaller than many other theaters I have been to, but it is a very small complaint. Their comfortable seats make up for it and then some!
I love this theater mostly because whenever I'm here it's for free screening of another great movie is about to come out. If you ever get a chance to stop in comfortable seat comfortable chairs I don't think I've ever ate at the concession stand but I definitely enjoy the convenience of being able to park on the ground close to the theater.
if i could give it a 0 i would. in all 19 years of going to movies in all different places i’ve never been to a place so dirty in my life. i left in tears from seeing all the cockroaches and having them crawling on me. it was so disgusting. ive never felt the need to leave a review this is my first but i felt a need to let people know.
Nice theater, and the fact that it’s in Japantown and super clean is a bonus as well! Food is nice, but be warned they don’t have many options because of the nationwide supply chain shortage. The screens are very big, and the audio when you’re in the movie theater is an experience on its own, with very punchy bass(which is good).
Watched animated movie here , not what i expected. Screen projection was bigger then the screen and was projecting out of the white frames and some times above on the ceiling. Never gonna watch any movie here . Giving it three stars only because they are still open and providing a source of entertainment to general public.
The smaller auditoriums at this theater are a pretty poor cinema experience; small screens with old projectors and unimpressive sound. The theater is really in need of upgrades to modern cinema standards like what you get at the Metreon AMC. But at least you can hang out in Japantown before and after the movie!
I Love AMC Movies the menu and chairs are perfect. My favorite thing about Kabuki is the Style and format of the Building. It’s a historic landmark at this point. I recommend everyone take the entire family here to see a movie. Best Marvel movie experience I had was with Spider-Man …
Cool place, really big theater but if you sit on the balcony the screen might be a bit small for people who don't have great eyesight. Otherwise spacious area and searing with tables every 2 seats or so for food and drinks. Serves alcohol which I think is a great addition for a movie theater
Nice theatre with reserved seating. The bar area is nice if you are over 21 and balcony seating is great as well. Expect a sizable crowds on weekends. I wish the lines would be tailored better towards peak hours but I guess it's also good for the wallet that they aren't!
This place used to be a lot better but now it is so understaffed that AMC feels like a parasitic entity in SF. Nothing is open, the building feels dilapidated, not enough people working there it's like the bosses aren't acting in good faith. What a disappointment.
The movie theatre experience was fantastic with an inviting ambiance. The closed bar space is a slight disappointment, but the comfortable seating and excellent movie selection made up for it. I’ll definitely be back for more movie nights in the future!
Large, comfortable theater. Our choice, because of location, to see The Met Live in HD. Where else can you watch an opera and eat popcorn? Perfect only, if the popcorn had been fresh. Too bad it was not, and the concessions seller was surly.
This is hands down one of the best theaters that I've been to in a long time. I love the decor I love the setup and the fact that the seats are super plush and comfortable with cup holders, is a super big bonus. They always have the latest
Beautiful space. They offer food and drink (including full bar) that you can eat while you wait in the little restaurant area, or take into the movie with you. The alcohol is REALLY expensive though (double the prices of most bars), so not
Miss boutique movie theater is really clean, has parking underneath there street parking as well, the staff are super nice and on Tuesday nights you can get into the movies with a $5 discount if you join their plus program which is a free
Complete rip-off and disappointed by the lack of customer service, knowledge, and management. My friend was charged $20 for a single glass of Francis Coppola wine that is typically $13/bottle. She called the next day when we realized the
Nice theatres ! Reserved seating which can work to your benefit as long as you plan ahead of time. Nice movie theater bar you can get a cocktail, beer or wine for your show. They have the nice self serve soda machines where you can mix
This theater has wide spacious seats in a small theater seating only 57 in an intimate setting that a rich friend may have in their mansion. The sound system was good and the experience itself overall quite a pleasant way to enjoy an
I had a great experience at Kabuki. The theater is beautifully decorated with Japanese style decor. It's a smaller theater that never gets too busy. Its advisable to buy tickets online as they do sell out. On the ground floor is one
Ugh. Long concession line (15 minutes), slooooooow service, people cutting the line, and the popcorn was broken bits very few whole kernals. By the time I realized what I had it was dark in the theater and the movie was starting.
one of the coolest movie spaces i have ever been to! you can tell that this was not originally an AMC theater because the lobby is fantastic! stadium seating but seats are very comfy, plus, theater 1 is awesome!
One of my favorite theaters in San Francisco. The seats are comfortable, and it’s a more luxurious theater-going feel. They serve alcoholic drinks, and the food is decent (I recommend the flat bread pizza).
There aren’t many AMC’s in the city, so this one serves Hayes to the Sunset, and Lands End to Pacific Heights. That being said, this is a half decent theatre. I do wish they had the fancy reclining chairs.
Big seats, and clean theatre. We sat up in the balcony halfway back, on the end, and the seats were still great. So many great food options nearby too! Great theater for dinner and a movie date night.
Great theatre, nice location , loved the fact that besides the snack stand you'll also have a bar serving alcohol. You can take your drinks and enjoy while watching your favorite movie , so so nice
Saw many movies here. It’s a great theater with great snacks. They have big and small theaters. The small theaters are very nice. They have very comfortable chairs and it’s a great movie experience
Saw Oppenheimer last night in 70mm - movie theatre was so hot and uncomfortable. No AC or air circulation in a packed theater. Screen was also disappointing and small for an AMC theater.
The good reviews are old, before AMC bought this theater. It used to be great. It showed you the movie right when the movie was supposed to start with only 2-3 movie trailers before.
Bed bugs or some sort of bug that bites in the fabric chairs in theater 1. Got 3 (triangle pattern) this past week. Felt myself being bitten within minutes of sitting down. Stay away.
Never really a very busy theater especially at matinee. In the evening serves alcohol. Has the regular theater seating not yet updated to the 'lazyboy' style but still comfortable.
Nice smaller theatre. I was in auditorium #2 and the picture looked great. Very bright and sharp picture, better than most other places. 2.39 screen which is a nice bonus.
The star is for the friendly staff. But the bathroom is horrendous. It's dirty and gross. The priority line at the snack bar is just another line. You aren't a priority.
They don't validate parking any more...bummer. Food is not so good. But movie an popcorn are great...love the mall nearby and the big windows. Glad it is still open.
Tiny theater but well maintained, conveniently accessible by the #22 bus, decent movie selection. A very calm neighborhoody alternative to Metreon for AMC releases.
Saw Star Wars at a matinee mid week..So much fun! Almost empty theatre with a bar. And clean and comfy. Very nice interior spaces for eating drinking and chillin'.
AVOID THIS THEATER! If I could give this movie theater 0 stars, I would. No AC, the most uncomfortable seats, small & faulty screen, and way too overpriced.
Ever since AMC bought the Kabuki, the theater has been full. And as a full, busy, theater inspires further snack bar purchases.
It was nice &cheep and the chairs are very comfortable!! They do a good job accommodating my disability!! Thank you very much..
Speaker was broken and made an awful banging sound that was incredibly loud. I had to wear earplugs during the movie.
No sweet popcorn, watched Oppenheimer in 70mm but the quality was bad. Very noticeable flickering and damaged film.
Bar was shut qith no warning, the seats were fairly cramped, and there's certainly old HVAC. Not worth a trip
It's been awhile but I've always enjoyed this theater as I've grown up in the city.
Great cuter loved it. We even had our dogs there.
Very small theater, no AC... Do not recommend.
