This review is of pick-up only at the Hilton downtown SLC. This is a small satellite location for Avis. It is a tiny, enclosed counter with room for one employee and 1-2 customers. The cars are stored in the Hilton underground garage in designated Avis spots. I did not stay at the Hilton, but took public transport here after attending to other business in the SLC, and then I drove the car to Denver, so I did not use this location for drop-off. When you walk into the lobby the Avis counter isn't immediately visible, it is around a corner past the hotel check-in counter on the right. I had a similar experience that others have noted, which is upon arrival, the office was locked with a "will return by..." sign hanging in the window. I did arrive 30 minutes later for my pickup that I had indicated when I rented online, so I wasn't upset by this. Having read reviews before my arrival, I knew that there was probably only on person working and that he was probably down in the garage P3 level tending to vehicles. But before I could head down to the garage to find him, he emerged from the elevators and came to the office at the exact time his "will return by..." sign indicated. By the way, if you do choose to go to the garage to locate the Avis attendant, note that you cannot return to the lobby if you are not a hotel guest. The doors to the elevator vestibule are key card access only. So either have another person go down with you and remain inside the vestibule to open the door for you, or be prepared to walk out of the garage on foot and back in through the hotel front entrance. The employee pulled up my reservation within seconds, printed the contract, gave me no hassles or hard sells to upgrade or purchase insurance that I didn't need. It appears that there are limited vehicles at this location, so the odds of getting a free upgrade are pretty high. He had only two vehicles when I checked out, and even though I rented the cheapest, smallest vehicle, I ended up with an SUV. If you absolutely must have the level of car that you reserve, then you might want to choose a location with more inventory. You will do the vehicle walk-around and examination yourself, the Avis employee at this site who operates the counter alone, will not accompany you down to the vehicle. So take pics and return to the counter if you have any concerns before you leave. Exiting the garage was easy, but a two-step process and could be confusing to anyone who isn't use to modern city parking garages. One card was inserted into a machine, and another card was scanned by a different machine. The arm lifted and away we went. The car performed well, displayed my android auto, and had a nice sound system. I would rent from this location again.

I'm reluctant to write a bad review of this location, as I've rented there many times and the service and the cars have always been excellent. However, they are trying to steal $250 from me. I returned a car in December, and in mid February received a letter telling me Avis was going to charge my credit card $250 for a cleaning fee. I called them to dispute the charge, and told them explicitly that they were not authorized to charge my credit card, to instead send a bill. I authorized a $250 hold on the card while I had possession of the car - I did not authorize Avis to make charges indefinitely into the future after the car was returned and the transaction was complete. Moreover, the car only required vacuuming to remove a little bit of dry sand and dust from hiking in the desert. I would have dropped a few quarters at a car wash and vacuumed it myself if I suspected it might be problem, but vacuuming is a normal part of the service you pay for when you rent a car. The contract says Avis gets to determine "at their sole discretion" whether to charge a reasonable cleaning free, but the contract does not say they get to arbitrarily determine what is reasonable - otherwise they could charge $10,000 for a fingerprint on the steering wheel. The going commercial rate for hand washing and vacuuming a car in Salt Lake City in $35. A full detail, with carpet and upholstery shampoo, which this car did not need, can be had onsite for $150. $.25K to vacuum a car is completely unreasonable. I offered to pay a reasonable cleaning fee, but they wouldn't even talk with me about it, and instead charged my card $250 without my permission. Now I have too waste a lot of time disputing this fraudulent charge with my credit card company. And I have to leave bad reviews here and other places, as I promised Avis I would. Renter beware.

Tim at the Salt Lake City Hilton gave superb service! 10/10 would reccomended! I had a terrible travel experience, and wound up at the Hilton after a flight was canceled indefinitely, and was surprised to see an Avis office in the lobby of this gorgeous establishment! The agents were kind and understanding when I explained my situation, and gave me the best possible service. The waiting area is adjacent to calming fountains and a Starbucks right there while you wait! I was able to quickly get a rental car reserved, around 11am, for noon pickup, and despite them being short around 50 cars, they had me in a complimentary upgraded SUV, when I had only reserved an economy car, within an hour. I haven't spent much time in the area, but I enjoyed the hotel and the ease of the avis office right there, so much, that I've planned my next trip through the area around it. No need to get a rental at the airport and stand in line for an hour, before finding a hotel. It's a 5 minute rideshare or taxi ride to the hotel from the airport, and I know I'll be taken care of fully when I arrive, and will quickly have keys in my hands when I'm ready! Thanks again to Tim and Avis in the Salt Lake City Center Hilton!

They need to be concerned with safety if they are renting vehicles. They do not check tires. Rented an SUV for a family vacation. Noticed about half way there how bad the back tires were and how unsafe it would be to continue the other 6 hours with my family. The tires has tread on the edges and bald through the whole middle. When I say bald, there were NO tread at all through the whole middle of both tires- smooth to touch. Driving through ID & OR canyon/mountain areas like that is very unsafe. Called roadside assistance that evening and also in the morning. After hours of calls back and forth- We had to go pick up another vehicle. Drive 160 miles longer and extra money on gas. Missed a full day of our reserved vacation. I asked for some compensation for the hassle and extra gas we had to spend. Gas isn't cheap right now! Called and also messages were left for the manager by Tim. Tim was very nice but couldn't help with the situation. We have to speak with the manager or call customer service. Nothing has been done. Calling the customer service line 3 times for 30 minutes of holding. It has been ridiculous.

They charged me 2.5 times more than I agreed. I got a quote when I called to make the reservation for a car with unlimited milage. When I got to the actual location the price was slightly different but the clerk couldn't fix it so he told me not to worry about, wrote the original price I was quoted on the receipt and told me he would adjust it when his boss got back. I made it clear that I wanted unlimited mileage and he told me that yes, the quoted price should be the correct price. I had to drop the car off after office hours. When I got the bill I saw I was more that twice what the original quote was. I had to call several times to get help and eventually I was told there was nothing they could do for me but give me a small credit. I will never use Avis again. It seems like their employees are poorly trained because I think the price was misquoted to me on the phone and the the clerk didn't know to tell me differently so in the end I had to pay much more than I anticipated.

I just rented from this location and I wanted to come take the time to express my gratitude. The rental car business is one full of pitfalls. Between travel sites, the agency itself, all the way down to the almost small-business-like shop you actually get the car from, a lot can go wrong. Costco Travel made a promise that wasn't really part of Avis terms. The clerk was incredibly patient as he and I tried to work through the problems together. Ultimately after both Costco, and Avis corporate couldn't help, the desk clerk stepped in and made it right for me. He did all this while juggling a constantly ringing phone and an endless stream of customers, and stayed patient and professional the entire time. On top of the service, the car we got is beautiful. It was clean, well maintained, and better than what you get from a lot of other rental agencies. This is my first time renting from this location, but the experience was so good, I will be back.

I had a worst rental experience with this location. Will not recommending to book from here. Had a booking done well in advance (2-3 weeks prior) . I booked a full size car but when I arrived at the counter person said my ford focus is ready. Seems to be they have not even had a look at my booking . After arguing they offered me a SUV. And they did not had the toddler seat which I booked with the original reservation and asked me to go to the SLC air port to pick one. I have to spent additional 2-3 hours to complete the entire process and start my vacation due to all sort of these issues. (My wife and kid had to stay in the hotel while I had to drive to SLC air port to pick a car seat and return) Due to that I skip one attraction which I was planning during the visit. They seems to be not prepared and do not care what they have to supply each day.Only good thing done was the guy at the counter waived the fee for the car seat.

Worst rental location with poor customer service. Had a rental confirmation there for a business trip and they were one of the only places open on Sunday in Utah. I arrived to pick to up my car and the employee working you can tell was just trying to get his day over with and didn't want to help anyone. Even though I had all the confirmation paper work he told us we didn't have a reservation but that he could put us in a car for more than triple what our confirmation was. We immediately called Avis and they instantly pulled up our confirmation without any issues. Because of their lazy employee at this Hilton location we drove 45 minutes to SLC for nothing and have to drive to another location tomorrow just to get a vehicle I should have already recurved. Good thing this wasn't for an emergency. Anyone thinking of renting from Avis should try a different location.

Went to the location at 8am after pre-paying in advance for a car, we were told there were no cars available. The team suggested we take an Uber to go to the airport to 'check' (no offer of a call ahead). Then after pushing back we were offered a mini van or a 12 seater (we had requested a small car), we took as this was the only one available. We drove less than a mile, the air pressure in the rear right tire was very low - do you not check this before renting back out? I found a hole in the tire, which is incredibly unsafe and may have caused an accident! We had to return to the location and wasted half a day figuring out a new car. Terrible service, inventory showing availability when not, will not be using again.

Staff is friendly to your face, but leaves out important instructions like where tonreturn the keys after hours, then charges you for them without calling you when you leave them secured in the car. They said I damaged the windshield wiper and that the claim has photos but then they give you a number to call where the claim rep says they probably dont have pictures. They said I left it less than full, i filled it up at a dtation by my hotel less than a miles away, then drove it to the parking garage. It was full! They are hard to deal with afterward. The main number transfers you to the 800 number, who tell ypu to keep calling the main number. AVIS is a scam, and I was hosed by the Salt Lake City Hilton Location.

Had booked a sedan for a family road trip was assisted in the process with great friendly service. The woman was patient and great about helping us because I was tired and had a CC issue that was solved Quickly (bring a swipable CC and/or keep them fresh before travel) you can still pay debit for it all. I had needed the car for one more day and the gentlemen had assisted me again with hospitality and an easy in and out process i was AGAIN super pumped to get on the road again. I Had the tank full and was once again pleased with the 8am time they open because i could do a few last things before i said bye. I forgot the gentlemen's name but he was thorough, helpful, and just made my time here better and smooth.

Just disappointed, completely disappointed. They love not answering the phone the representees act unprofessional i will never again i rather rent from a company that actually cares about customers. i don't know how to put it just drastically disappointed worst experience ever. Oh and they also charged me 50 bucks and i still can't get ahold of them so they can refund me cause i don't know why i have that charge i mean i paid all the fees and and stuff and there is a random charge on my account like seriously and i still can't get a hold of no one to help me its wildly, outrageous it blows my mind im worthless to them seriously not even a call back and i have left multiple voicemails.

Avis saved the day when Budget fell through!! I needed an extended SUV and I booked though Budget weeks in advance. I communicated with the manager for weeks, in order to ensure that the correct car would be at the correct location at time of pick up. After all that, they didn’t have the correct car and I was left frantically calling every other company in town! Avis has a car for me, the employee I spoke with was kind and efficient! He had excellent communication and he was clear about the contract I was signing. The car was perfect! It was new, only had 1,000 miles on it! It was clean and had all the bells and whistles! The drop off process was easy and I was happy with the price!

I've rented from Avis at this location 14-16 times a year for the past 4 years. Roughly 75% of the time, there are issues. They do NOT bother to clean the inside of windshields, making it difficult to see at night. They charge $16 to refuel if your rental was one day, regardless if you show them a receipt. Getting that receipt is a nightmare, the PDF links they send usually don't open. Last car they gave me had a gas tank 2/3 full, the the tires had 55psi in them, and the tailgate was smashed in. Return agent was a jerk, claimed he had no access to the invoice to determine whether I was charged for fuel. Never again, I'm switching to another company (and not one owned by Avis...)

These guys are on fire. First, they rented a vehicle with a completely bald tire, worn well below the tread and all three layers of kevlar. Additionally, the vehicle had a cracked windshield when it was picked up (photos attached of both). Thirdly, the vehicle reserved was not the vehicle that was initially rented. After noting the issue with the tires they refunded the reservation, but then sent an invoice for $461.88 for the cracked windshield - which existed at the time of pick up. Mistakes happen. But the unsafe condition of the vehicle that was rented, combined with an unwarranted bill for nearly $500 for their own oversight is incredible, and warrants an investigation.

I have tried to contact Avis Customer Service three times to ask them to remove the infant car seats away from the trash cans. Storing infant car seats by the trash is UNSANITARY. The three times, Avis Customer Service, replied back to me, asking me to fill out a long form, instead of immediately removing the infant car seats from the trash cans. Since they were more concerned about "following the procedure" (filling out the form) than listening to their customers, here it is. This is the same picture I have sent Avis Customer Service. Apparently, THIS COMPANY DOES NOT CARE ABOUT UNSANITARY CONDITIONS FOR THE CHILDREN. Shame on you, Avis!

This review is for the location and not Avis. The Avis website allowed me to reserve a vehicle when none were available. However Tim at this location was very pleasant, helpful and apologetic. After a short wait he was able to find another different class of vehicle that although it had a problem, it was none critical to our needs and the vehicle was otherwise fine. Note that this is a small location and has limited selection, availability and service capabilities, on the plus side it is very convenient if you are downtown for some event and want to rent a car to spend a day out of town to explore the area.

We were helped by Amis at this rental location after almost being completely scammed at the Avis airport location in SLC. Amis saved our entire trip by helping us rent a car at the last minute even though we booked 5 months in advance and the airport messed it all up by adding on crazy fees (which they didn't explain) and then only accepting one credit card for the insanely high fee which double our originally booked car. Amis was kind, caring, and did everything he could to get us a car so we could go on our trip. We owe him BIG TIME. I would recommend this Avis location. DO NOT GO TO THE AIRPORT AVIS.

The first car we drove the fuel gage did not work. Challenges with contacting the proper person to get a different car. Then at 10 pm I had to drive an hour to get a different car. Then I was treated like I did not know what was wrong with the car. The when the got the replacement car it was the worst car I have ever received. It was nasty and had lots of damages to the vehicle. The cruise control did not work on this vehicle. Also the car inspection had been expired for months.. Not good when police pull you over for that.. So to put it lightly, I did not have a good experience.

From an Uber Driver perspective: Convenient in a pinch, but the process through Uber is convoluted and unnecessarily complicated. Service is okay but not stellar. The shortage of cars makes it hard to be assured that you can make money after they force you to bring it in for maintenance. Might try Hertz next time even though they're more expensive. They seem to have more cars and selection. Avis also raised the rates and didnt bother to say anything until my payment was stopped because my bank considered it fraud when the charge magically changed.

Update: I emailed them and Monte responsed that they can't do anything, then I emailed again and Blake thankfully made it for me, Thank you Blake and Aisha! --- I have a car that I took from here, Salt Lake and by mistake I put LAX as one way drop off instead of LAS (Las Vegas Airport), now I want to change drop off from Los Angeles California to Las Vegas Nevada which is even closer and they ask to pay more! Is there anyway to change it without paying more ? I should drop it off after few days so I'm waiting for your help. Thank you

When I picked up the van problems with the computer system made it take 1 1/2 hours to get it even after reserving payment and credit card info online. I received a Chevy van with bench seats instead of a more comfortable Ford transit. Even though I received a discount for giving my email I still paid $444 on a rental advertised at $256 after taxes, fees, and insurance. The van was covered with dust inside, had no windshield washer fluid, had a dead battery in the key fob, and had a carboard box in the back.

Worst customer service ever! Do not prepay they will screw you! I booked a reservation and when I came to get the car they didn’t have any available which made me very late for an important event that I came to SLC for. They said sorry you have to wait until more cars come in which was forever. So fine they screwed up but at least compensate me for your mess up. Nope they said because you prepaid we can’t do anything for you. Crooks! Take your business elsewhere people! I am.

1) Vehicle had no fluids-had to purchase windshield washer fluid. ) vehicle was dirty-scratches and dents 3)Vehicle had 0% oil life-unsafe engine could have seized stranding my family in the desert4) I was not told that I prepaid for fuel and I was given a credit when I returned the car with a full tank I was not given a credit. 5) I was not told that even though I had unlimited milage, I had to record the milage-I had to go back to the garage and wait on line again.

We are frequent visitors to SLC and, having tried a few other rentals, we're sticking with Avis. The downtown Hilton is an ideal place for pickup and drop off, the car is clean and ready, pricing is competitive, and we've never gotten the runaround regarding car availability. Extending the rental period is easily done over the phone. We almost always return to the hotel location (instead of the airport) and it's super simple. These folks are easy to do business with.

We picked up our rental car at 25 August in the morning after we had some very bad experience with another rental company the day before. The young Avis employee was very kind and helpful. He made a good offer, took the time to include everything we needed for our trip and helped us to install the child seat. So finally we could start our trip and I can really recommend this place. The office is inside the Hilton building on the ride side behind the hotel counter.

The van was absolutely filthy. Floor mats were in the seats, the carpets were filthy. When we put thre mats on the floor they were covered with dirt and dried mud. There is NO way this vehicle was cleaned and sanitized. We did not have time to wait for it to be recleaned....we were told it would be adjusted....ARE YOU KIDDING..$15.00 ADJUSTMENT. WE ARE A GROUP OF SENIORS...come.on Avis have consideration of the health and wellbeing of your customers!

I had booked a rental for pickup from Salt Lake City - Hilton Hotel at 8:00 AM. Upon reaching the pickup location, I was told that cars weren't available. I waited for an hour and was asked to come back at 10:30 AM. Once again, no cars were available. At 11:30 AM, I was asked to go to the airport instead. I had to pay to go to the airport, in addition to the already 3+ hour wait, and had to pay extra for the rental at the airport. Terrible experience.

I had a great experience at this Avis location. Prior to finding Avis, I had a negative experience using Expedia and was stuck in Salt Lake without a vehicle and a full schedule of meetings and work. The owner was incredibly nice and efficient, super helpful, and all around easy to work with. The car was in great condition, pick up was easy as was dropping the car off before hours to catch my early flight. I would highly recommend this location.

Rented a car in Utah/Wyoming in the Winter. The headlights were out of alignment and only illuminated 15ft in front of the car so it couldn't be driven at night. I had to stop at dark in a town I hadn't planned on staying in. The windshield wipers needed to be replaced and only smeared the windshield during snow storms. There was no ice-scaper and the back seat looked like the Prius from the Other Guys with stains and dirt upon pick up.

Service could be improved with a smile upon greeting and more explaination of what was going on when their computer crashed and they had to resort to hand written forms. I had to ask what was going on. Attendant seemed new or tired or distracted but nice...

Terrible service. Was told via phone (by the international rep cause local reps are never available) that my reservation was for 6:00 pm and when I got there at 6:00 pm they were closed. With no way to get in contact with them I was left out to dry. This company needs to update its customer interaction to 21st century standards.

I have rented from this location a number of times and they always provide me with the best service and a beautiful rental car. I have no complaints here, only good things to say about this location.

Showed up at 11:40 to pick up our rental reservation. Office closes at 12pm. Plenty of time. Yep three customers outside the office waiting already and no agent. I guess someone decided their shift was just going to be over early today despite multiple customers having reservations. I will never rent Avis again.

Rude, sign said be back in 10 minutes we waited 30 and she came back to close the store and had to help. We rented the car and really glad car was ok , just really stunk and had to buy air freshener to help with smell. She locked up behind us and was gone before we ever got to the car. I will never be back.

First, gave me a car with maintenance light on. Came back right away to change it but the only attendant was gone and had to wait about 30 mins for the change. I would say, from service point of view, if you are giving a car to the customer, you have to make sure no check engine or maintenance light is on.

Be sure to not get swindled by this guy. They will tell you that you can return to other locations when you you in fact cannot. They will then charge you extra. Awful customer service. I guess they have to make money somehow. Avoid at all costs, there are plenty of other places to rent cars from.

Had a great experience renting at this location! Admittedly had a little bit of a hard time finding it at first but the return at this location was extremely easy. This location made it very easy for me to pick up and return during my lunch hour. I would definitely rent from this location again.

I asked for all additional product and services to be declined and the guy at the counter (for who English was a second language) decided to accept a $31 per day loss damage waiver for me despite saying no. This $31 per day loss damage waiver cost more than my car rental per day.

Service is a 5-star. The reason for this 3 star is because I got charged $20 without explanation. Also because I prepaid, instead of just charging me around $100 for 1 day, they charged me $157 because they couldnt cancel my prepaid reservation. So lesson learned: NEVER PREPAY

It was so easy to rent from Avis in SLC. I walked 1 block from my hotel (the Marriott) to the Hilton. I picked up the car from the Hilton parking garage. I returned it to the airport. We were greeted in the parking deck (lot); did not have to go in or stand in a line.

My flight was delayed so I got there at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and they closed at 2 p.m. The guy at the desk ran and got his manager. The manager helped me out and gave me a car and even did so for the guy behind me in the same situation. Saved my trip to Sundance.

The car had a bad odor, its wasn't too clean on the inside their was fries and chicken under the driver seat the side mirror were glass were very dirty and then I had to fuel 4 times from Utah to Texas the fuel tank was too small it was a KIA K5 2023

We asked for an economy car and they gave us a Kia Soul, which is not as good as we expected on gas, our car is way better on gas!! Everything else was great, customer service was really helpful and nice.. We will rent from them again!!

This little Avis stop is in a Hilton and the gentlemen who work there are amazing communicators and really take care of the customer. The cars are always well maintained and, especially during the COVID pandemic, are always clean.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I realized the rental counter was in a hotel, but the gentleman who helped me was amazing. The speed of getting from the counter to the car was great, and I got the exact car I was hoping for.

Your Downtown salt lake city location always has there door open and ready to wheel and almost every time I need a rental they have one for me. As a preferred member I'm in and out real quick like and thats why recommend avis

Bad experience. After flying cross country to pick up my car at the hotel in SLC, the agent tried to double the agreed confirmation price until finally giving me the proper price. It was an embarrassment to Avis.

Online order was confirmed but had no cars onsite. Was offered a ride to airport but was 45min wait for ride. Once at airport there was another 1.5 hours wait at airport. Finally cancelled confirmed reservation.
