I was able to visit BLK + BRWN on Thursday and let me tell you they did not disappoint. It was very easy to find in the Westport area, google maps takes you right to it. When I walked in I was greeted by the amazing aroma of perming essential oil as well as a kind smile from bookstore owner, Cori. The natural light light coming from the from windows gave such an ethereal aesthetic it truly enhanced my experience. The selection of black books by black authors were endless and the shelves were easy to navigate. Cori, has the neatest QR code tech in the store that allows the customers to get a mini summary of the book, author, and suggested books to read similar to the one you are checking out. You may also order the book from that QR code right from the store website. I was able to find a gem, “The Dooky Chase Cookbook” written by the legendary Leah Chase. I was also able to pick up a nice bookmark, kids book, and tee shirt. I had such a great experience, and I encourage any and everyone to stop by!

One of my favorite things to do whenever I'm traveling in any capacity, is to find local BIPOC owned book stores. This past weekend I was lucky enough to visit @blkbrwnkc in Kansas City, Missouri. The space opened on Juneteenth in 2021 and was created specifically to amplify Black and brown storytelling in all its forms. My first thought when I walked into the door was that I felt cozy and safe. With local artwork displayed throughout and all the books front facing, it felt like an art gallery while still being homey. This bookstore is unique in that the content is curated to fit a theme. So, books displayed change monthly! Next month, the owner says the books will center on mental health. If you're in the area - stop by! You won't regret it!

Much more than a bookstore. This is home. Cori has thoughtfully created this space for underrepresented communities and voices to be seen, heard and felt. These intentions are experienced from the moment you walk in the door, from every touchpoint and interaction you have, whether in-person or online. Her knowledge, expertise and passion is astounding and genuine. I can’t recommend this place enough.

This bookstore feels like home and the staff makes you feel like family; Unmatched knowledge and customer service, and by far one of the best small businesses to support in KC! With an amazing selection, Coming back to this store to get more books is now a huge motivator for me to read more often! Best bookstore experience I’ve ever had, will definitely return!

The owner is so smart and a delight! She is in the know of most things and the few things she doesn’t know she usually knows how to get the information. The store is warm and inviting. She keeps a great selection of books and lots of good activities and events.
