Idk what I walked into lol I came here to grab a drink. Turns out it’s bingo night but they call it “Stingo” cus the guy who’s hosting it is named Steve. It’s also his birthday. He’s turning 62. Someone yells “Stingo”, they get handed a mini fridge. He yells out the number 69 and every one yells out “Yesssss”. Someone brings in a cake with candles and suddenly everyone’s singing happy birthday and hands him the cake. This is Bernice’s Tavern.

One of the best bars on the South Side. Early in the day it is a neighborhood staple full of guys from around the corner who have lived here for thousands of years. Later on, the vibe turns a bit younger and hipper. Cash only, bottles and cans only, plus plain old mixed drinks, shot-n-beer sorta place. Sometimes they do open mics, host interesting musical acts, or Stingo...you'll just have to experience that. Mike and Steve, Bernice's sons, run the place, and grew up atop the bar where Herself still resides.

I come here every Wednesday for Stingo, every Sunday for a Bloody Mary (and sometimes free lunch!), and whenever I'm in the neighborhood just to stop by and chat with Steve. You get to know everyone fairly quickly, and your new friends occasionally bring homemade baked goods to share (Becky makes a mean red velvet cupcake). Bernice's Tavern is the definition of a great neighborhood bar.

I arrived here on Saturday afternoon with a bunch of friends exploring Bridgeport. We were nervous what kind of reception we'd get in this neighborhood bar. It was amazing! Michael was very inviting, told us lots of history about the place and recommended that we return for Stingo! We'll have to come back for that on Wednesday! Great place the moment you step through the door!

Never ate here so not giving a rating on the food. Other than that, this place is one of the best dive bars I've been to. Good selection of beers, great bartenders and just a good atmosphere of people. Prices are pretty decent. Won't break the bank drinking here.

Steve the owner bartender is a hot. This used to be strictly an old mans shot n beer bar with Lithuanian roots. Steve took over from his mom and it is now a certifiable hipster spot. Go there in Thursday evening for Stingo. Bingo hosted by Steve with his oddball sense of humor and prizes as loopy as the bingo caller himself.

  • Sam Bottoms

Cosy and relaxed pub with cheap beer. Lots of fun and kitschy decor, especially love the wall murals that were apparently painted by the owner. Friendly staff and unpretentious, low key spot to chill out for a few hours. Have a weekly bingo "stingo" night on Wednesdays and they host great live music on the weekends

  • Mia Valdez Quellhorst

Cheap drinks and great bartender. You can bring your own food in so feel free to grab tacos across the street. Wednesday, you can play Stingo (Bingo, called by the owner/bartender, Steve) for free and win real, awesome prizes. Mystery box, anyone? Favorite neighborhood gem of a bar; don't go changing, Bernice's.

If you want that Milwaukee feel three miles outside the Loop. If you want that backyard cheese grillin love from your grandfather who lives on the other side of the earth. If you want to see someone get proposed to, someone sing their heart out on stage and someone get over-excited about bingo. GO HERE>

Great local joint. It's a place that is hipster, but not Pinterest hipster. No mustache wax here. Its people buying cheap beer because it means more beer. If you don't have a friend to come with, no worries, there is enough stuff on the walls to keep you entertained until the Pabst kicks in.

  • Debbie McGovern

A friendly and welcoming place. You can catch music there several nights each week and the owner runs a bingo night (Stingo) most Wednesdays. But there's plenty of time to also just chill with friends or even alone in a low key and relaxing environment. Free juke box! What's not to like?

  • Rose Gronkowski

Great old neighborhood bar. It is small but they do have bands in there. Always a great time. The owner, bartenders and customers are all friendly and welcoming. If you are in the area you should stop in for a drink.

If you're going to venture down to Bernice's, go on a Wednesday for Stingo. Basically bingo with a lot of drinking. It's free to play, it's hilariously fun, and there are prizes! But get there early if you want a seat. Drinks are cheap and the bartender's tattoos are hott.

Get your buzz on once they buzz you in! Or as Billy "The Poet" Blake was heard to mumble over his $5 shot-n-beer: "A good local pub has much in common with a church, except that a pub is warmer, and there's more conversation."

  • Joel Buchanan

Amazing local watering hole. There is an actual (non-internet) jukebox in the back along with a great host of characters. Cash only. Beers range from low level domestics to high brow imports. Can't wait to come back.

  • J Pitts

Always have a good time coming to this bar. Have cash or be ready to get it out of the ATM as it is a cash only bar. No frills, just beer, booze and friends. Enjoy yourself the next time your in Bridgeport.

  • Stefanie Wright

Friendly, no nonsense neighborhood tavern in Bridgeport. Bartenders are friendly, and quick. Owner Steve is a top notch guy, and a great musician. Reasonable prices, good selection of beer and booze.

  • Marty Sweeney

My favorite bar in Bridgeport. A classic Chicago dive with great specials. Love going here after Sox games to either celebrate or drown my sorrows in their specials, usually a shot and beer combo.

  • Vasily Deris

Cool family owned bar. Love the owner, Steve. Very inviting. Asked us our names. Loved it. Love a family owned bar who appreciates its customers and very classy hole in the wall in Bridgeport.

  • Joel Philipp

Every night is good, but Wednesdays... Stingo is rad. A nice atmosphere, great drinks, reasonable prices and a fantastic staff, it's easily the best bar in Bridgeport. …

  • devin montgomery

There's a sign on the wall that says, "If we don't have it, you don't need it." It very well defines this bar. And its exactly what I was looking for to stop in and get a quick beer

  • Vittorio Carli

Nice honey atmosphere and I saw people there I have not seen for years. Although I was really tired and live far away I loved the comic/marriage reading and I was very glad I came.

  • Dav Med

My favorite "hole in the wall" local bar! Has a great dive bar atmosphere, odd kitschy coin banks. As well as cool artwork by Mike Badauskas. Best priced drinks in Bridgeport.

  • Geraldine Collins

Friendly staff and enjoyed the live music on a Sunday evening. Only beer and wine served here but if you like beer, there are good options on tap. Good for singles or a date!

  • Raisa Ramirez

The place is small but the atmosphere was nice and it felt very homey. They had live jazz music when we arrived and it sounded great! It's cash only but the drinks are cheap.

  • Juliana Kluever

Best little bar in town! It has so much character. With all its curious little knick knacks scattered throughout the bar, you never know what you might spot. Good service!

We came here for an open mic night and it was the quietest bar I’ve ever been to. One woman at the bar was even reading a book. Huh? Cool space but I’d doubt I’d go back.

  • Julie Whitehead

Cheap drinks and great service. This is exactly what you want in a neighborhood bar. The only drawback is the number of hipsters. But if you ignore them you are fine.

  • Grim Lore

Friendly environment for a dive bar sort of atmosphere. Relatively good prices on beer, occasionally they'll have bands jam making for an interesting time.

  • Ladykay

Gross, I love dive bars but this is........ Like daytime with no one is great but at night the owner is so stingy its terribly hot and gross... Blah

  • J G

I generally like the decor and the bartenders, not to mention the cheap beer prices. They normally stay open late, unless they don't feel like it.

  • Sam LeVon
