This restaurant used to be fabulous when it was China Hut. I ordered $100 worth of food and nothing came out right.$1.75 I got one egg roll instead of two which China Hut used to give two. They were dried out tough and stale. I ordered short ribs for $8.25 and got three to six small pieces with a lot of bone and hardly any meat I thought it was an appetizer it was so small and tough. The shrimp fried rice was mushy. The barbecue pork was all covered in some type of sauce that made it taste not like pork not very good and too much sauce. Mongolian beef was covered in some gooey sweet sauce that tasted like the same sauce that was on the orange chicken. Too much sauce and not at all tasty like Mongolian beef. The orange chicken had barely any chicken nuggets and the same kind of sauce pretty much. China Hut used to have a lot of chicken for your buck and Mongolian beef too but these dishes hardly had any meat or chicken. I will never return they have gone straight downhill from China Hut. Must have changed ownership and bad cooks.

I received cold and bad food earlier this year from this restaurant. I called and complained about the quality of the food and the manager sent me another order that still wasn’t the greatest. I waited for a long while and ordered from this restaurant last night . Again, bad food!!! My food was cold and mushy. I waited almost an hour and a half for my food. Again I called and complained to the manager and she asked me if I wanted to wait for a new order or order something else. I asked for something different. Now here’s the kicker , she told me because I complained in the past about their food that I am not allowed to order any food that was returned in the past. They just lost a customer. How dare she imply that I’m not allowed to complain about their bad quality food or I would be penalized.. please don’t patronize this restaurant.

First tried them food was really good but over 1 year time have to say the food itaste, quality is mediocre at best. This is being polite. I called to inquire if they had a change in cooking staff? I was told no same chefs. Explained I noticed something is different and so has my spending with them. I ordered pineapple shrimp fried rice, chicken wings and 1 egg rolll. That came to 20 bucks, pineapple fried rice was 99% rice, it had 3 pieces of broccoli, 2 pieces of carrot, I tasted pineapple 3 times could not locate any in my dish after consuming the 3 pieces. Chicken wings were not fresh, they were refried to a point of extremely crispy; they were dry, even the egg roll tasted old. This use to be my go to place, not anymore. Too bad it cost me to find out how bad China Gourmet's food has gotten.

China Gourmet is a treasure trove for fried rice aficionados. Their rendition of this classic dish is nothing short of amazing - perfectly seasoned, delightfully flavorful, and stir-fried to absolute perfection. Even more impressive is the value; the portions are generous, and the prices are unbeatable. To top off the culinary experience, the staff at China Gourmet are the epitome of friendliness. They serve each dish with a warm smile and ensure your dining experience is as comfortable as it is delicious. For a hearty meal that satisfies both your palate and your wallet, China Gourmet's fried rice is a must-try!

The delivery was over an hour long, which is totally fine and expected. However, after waiting this long I get a phone call from China Hut and the delivery man was rather rude and kept asking for my address (even though l already left it when I ordered in the first place. I believe I repeated my address like five or six times, and after all of this he still got my address wrong. When finally arriving, he continued to argue with me saying that I gave him the wrong address. I know where I live, and I wouldn't have gotten it wrong all five or six times I had to repeat it. Also, I ordered the chicken chow mein, and let me just say it was okay, but defiantly not the best I've had, even by American Chinese food standards. This place is also overpriced for what they serve. I will never eat from here again.

  • Robert Middleton

I've ordered from this place twice and I was fooled twice, never again. Both times I ordered from this place they forgot my drink and instead of sending the driver back or another driver etc. they offered me store credit or I can pick it up from the store. My last order with them ever included what was supposed to be sweet and sour chicken, instead I got fried chicken chunks and tasteless syrup. Even the name of this place is a disgrace, there's nothing gourmet about this restaurant. There are plenty of Chinese restaurants in the neighborhood, shop with them instead of gambling on lunch and dinner with this poor excuse of a business.

Great prices for food that is worth eating daily. The staff are always hustling to make sure orders are done properly and on time. The hot and sour soup is the best soup I have ever had across several other restaurants. I also recommend the orange chicken or the golden sesame chicken with the specialty sauce.

I just moved to this area 3 months ago and hadn’t found any good chinese food but this was really good! I ordered the crab rangoons which were okay but too much dough and not enough filling for my taste and I also like the filling to be a bit sweeter but it did come with dipping sauce that was good. Combination fried rice was very good I ordered it spicy but it didn’t come spicy so that was a little disappointing and a vegetable lo mein noodle(not pictured) it was flavorful & had the perfect noodles and texture!

egg foo young was delicious, the fried rice and potstickers were good. the spring roll was alright. the pad thai was not the vibe, I hardly waste food but i ended up trashing it. never see pad thai red like this, it tatsed like they just dump sweet n sour sause on it. was really hard to eat even after trying to add some flavor back in. the egg drop soup was also off, redder than I've seen it and had no flavor. would order again just never the pad thai or egg drop soup.

Ive been a customer of China Gourmet since they were across the street and were China hut over 15 years! They are a hit or miss and this time was a definite miss, so much it lead me to write this review. Ordered orange chicken, combination fried rice, crab ragoons. They sent me fried breading dipped in orange chicken sauce because there was no chicken inside the heavy breading no eggs in my fried rice and no filling in my crab ragoons. I know the price of food has sky rocketed but be for real!! Very disappointing!

I used to love this place. I think the name changed so maybe its under new management. During this most recent visit, I did notice the terrible ratings but I thought maybe people were being unreasonable. But in actuality maybe not. Online ordering was a breeze. But then there was the food. The potstickers were huge but mushy. Almost like they weren’t cooked well. They tasted like huge balls of flour with a small center of meat. $7 in the garbage. Usually we get a small container of a deep red sweet and sour sauce for dipping egg rolls. None. “Beef and broccoli” should be renamed “Broccoli with a Beef Topping”. Bland orange chicken.

  • RieRie

This place has went downhill where do i began. First off they use the little nasty looking shrimps that look cheap and undercooked. If you Oder beef fried be aware because my rice literally had only five pieces of beef in a large sized rice. The rice was mushy the chicken wings was huge like they were on steroids and my sweet and sour chicken was hard as a brick. The icing on the cake is there delivery guy who had the nerve to come to my door very rudely asking for a tip. What the hell I look like tipping someone that’s unprofessional and I’m glad because the food was garbage. I would never order from them again

  • Randy White

I ordered the chicken fried rice, beef & broccoli and shrimp egg foo young, so far the food was good until my family and I realized that the restaurant put eggs shells inside of the egg foo young and rice. I feel disgusted like China Gourmet did that on purpose, which I will not be ordering from this restaurant again. The next day my children were feeling sick with their throat irritated from eating the Chinese food, good luck whoever eat from this restaurant.

Okay prices. Not particularly good food. They do a *wide* range of dishes and suffer because of it. The Empress Chicken is essentially the same as their sweet and sour chicken minus pineapple. The Thai food tastes like the people making it have no idea what Thai food tastes like (why are there tomatoes in chicken pad thai) Additionally be aware that their fried rice may have tiny shrimp in it regardless of if you ordered shrimp fried rice so... maybe skip fried rice if you can't do shellfish.

  • Rulookinatme2

I usually get delivery or pick-up, the actual restaurant itself is spacious with more than enough room to get and eat your food. I usually get the sweet and sour three delight, shrimp fried rice (no msg & spicy), pan fried dumplings, and crab rangoon. I literally have them saved in my phone.

Called to politely ask the status of my delivery because my food was due but the app still said it wasn’t on its way. That woman was SO rude. Not sure if she was having a bad day, but boy did she ruin mine with her attitude. I honestly don’t even care how the food will taste, never giving my business to this place again solely because of her. Her meanness made me lose my appetite.

I ordered a small shrimp fried rice and wonton soup etc. The fried rice was very dark, salty, dry it had no eggs and hardly no green onions. Refer to the picture. The wonton soup was 97% wonton and 3% meat inside. Horrible i wish i could give it less than 1star. Don't waste your time and money!!!!! You'll regret it.

Since then we've both been on and off the toilet for 5 hours with nausea and stomach cramps, and I've been feverish. This was the only thing we are that was the same thing so it has to be this

It was very decent, the spring rolls were good but the orange chicken was weirdly chewy and all very stuck together. My roommate said she felt like she was "dissecting something" when she was trying to get a piece of orange chicken out of heap. Also they notified us that they were out of something we ordered after we had placed the order and did not give us an option to change the order before it was delivered.

  • Vyk Villareal

I ordered the beef fried fried rice with my general tso chicken lunch special and pot stickers. The beef cost extra and there was literally 4 tiny pieces of beef, in the entire order. (I counted them) pot stickers were bland and mushy. Chicken was luke warm and all gelled together. And it only contained ONE piece of broccoli. There's definitely better Chinese take in the neighborhood. It so disappointing.

  • Shanna Jordan

Worst expierence I had with them tonight. My daughter ordered my food from a different side of town and had them deliver it to my house ( a house which is very familiar with them), I sent my son downstairs to get it and he said we couldn’t get it because my daughter wasn’t here. In reality my son reported back he looked frighten, which meant he was racist and was stereotyping. Never ordering from them again!

  • Ricardo De Leon

I kept seeing neighbors recommend this place in several neighborhood Facebook groups I'm in so I finally gave in and tried it. Now I'm one of those neighbors recommending this place. The food here is amazing and authentic Chinese-American cuisine. Portions were healthy and prices were reasonable, definitely worth checking this place out if you're looking for a great night in with Chinese food.

  • ola kunle

My order has been messed up couple of times, when I call to make complain, I ended getting blame, that I don't speak up very well. Sometimes I tell the person taken my order to repeat my order, after he\she done. I would still get messed order. Then you hear "Can you please bring back the food so we can replace your order. Then you would charge extra money if a driver come to pick up the food.

  • jas s

The food is good. Pretty typica for neighborhood Chinese. Staff are rude. Front desk girls are always on their phones. Literally have to get their attention to be served. No greeting. I always get the lunch specials and usually spend about $9. I refuse to pay full price when there's bad service. It's cool to just go there and grab some good food but don't expect anything more than that.

Just ordered from grubhub, and this was hands down the most disgusting food I have ever received. The beef fried rice came and it was chicken fried rice, it smelled absolutely horrible. And had a slimy texture. The orange chicken was definitely heated in the microwave, and was completely dried out. And we never received the crab rangoon. Do your self a favor and go somewhere else.

  • Nicole Smith

Regular street parking. Good sized place with nice simple decor. The beef hunan was okay, the chicken fried rice and chicken egg foo young was good! The egg roll and spring roll was decent but a bit oily. I would return for the fried rice and egg foo young and probably try out another specialty dish. There are bathrooms and the ladies working there were so helpful and nice!

yummy! just added to my saved phone numbers! the fried shrimp was wonderful! its a tempura batter, so I definitely couldn't make it at home! food tastes fresh, ingredients are good quality and its nice to get large portions after trying some trendier places like Asian Station that I was still hungry after eating all the dinner and the sadly small appetizer

  • Joaquin Cordero

WARNING do not get the Burbon chicken There is barely any chicken in it only two tiny strands of chicken and the rest is battered (pic below) Plus is not very tasty and its also chewy. With that being said, I liked their other dishes the pork fried rice is really good am not gonna stop ordering from here but I think they should sell what they advertise

  • Sally Williams

We have frequented this Chinese restaurant for years while we lived in Roger's Park neighborhood. The food is consistently the same flavors, unlike many who change owners that also seems to change how they prepare things. It's very good here always. They have lunch specials that are a great value. We will always go here when in the neighborhood.

  • Iris Hiatt

When today for the lunch special , I was sorry when I got home. They have just upped their prices and lowered their quality.. I had the Mongolian beef 2 weeks ago it was meaty & good. Today it was mostly onions with very little meat . Also it didn't taste as good. And this comes along with their prices going up . I will not be going back again

  • jo peer-haas

I used to like this place more. You do get a lot of food. But prices have increased; and, the chicken is really not good. My son and I got two different dishes and we both noticed the chicken was soft, almost mushy, with a lot of fat. I had to remove and toss most of mine. With so many other Chinese restaurants nearby, we won’t be returning.

  • Arrow Black

Tasty food in this little Chinese restaurant. A nice place to grab some quick food and keep going. The fruit smoothies are delicious. Edit: (Opinion) Upon eating a combination of different meats, it's hard to tell which meat I'm eating. Meat quality needs to be improved. But don't get me wrong, the place is still really tasty.

  • Osvaldo Pena

The staff behaves in the traditional way. The food is not served as much as other Chinese restaurants. The positive things are that the food taste very good and is not grease at all. Also, at the end, the servers say "thank you." I will defendly come back again.

The most horrible service and Chinese food I've ever had. Asked for receipt was not given one. Called back to ask to speak to manager told out of town. Ask them to drive over a receipt for my records was told they were too busy. Sounds like I have a law suit!!! Call me Rich when you get back from vacation!!!

  • Joshua G

The food is consistently excellent, but the young ladies that work the counter give even better, more friendly service. I just finished my pork fried rice and egg roll and as always it was delicious. I will go back for the food, but I will be loyal because the service at the counter is so welcoming.

  • Grayson Coleman-Selby

Great tasting food and great prices to boot! Right around the corner from my apartment so we order from here all the time. They sometimes don't get the order 100% correct but they do a lot better than most Chinese places I've ordered from. Highly recommend the Honey Rose Chicken!

  • Rosetta Berry

Every time I order it’s a even brighter day for me! I love their food! From the fried rice to the egg foo yung, to the smoothies! You’re gonna love it! Just ordered me some food just now from them and I know for a fact it’s gonna be delicious, so why not write a review this time.

  • Jada Williams

Ordered through the Doordash app and got my food very fast! Tried the sesame chicken, chicken fried rice, crab ragoons, and fresh fruit smoothies (avocado, banana, and watermelon). Very impressed with this place will absolutely be ordering again. Everything was delicious!

  • NunuRavenous Fahim

This restaurant used to have great food but it's gotten progressively worse over the years. They must've changed cooks since then. Play it safe and stick with the basics like egg rolls, fried rice and egg foo young. The specialty and Thai dishes are horribly prepared. Smh

  • Richard Sellers III

Ladies at the front counter are especially nice and accommodating. I likes their approach. Food was enjoyable and hit the spot. I was a tad confused though on the garlic shrimp dish as there were no vegetables - as other places traditionally do. Overall, i was satisfied.

  • Stern Life

The past 4 times we've ordered has been wrong. This time, I have nothing to eat. We called them & they said itll take another 40 MINUTES to get to my house that's about 10 minutes away. I have to cook my own rice to have my meal. So freaking ridiculous.

  • Maria Canizales

The food overall is very good but we were very excited to get some potstickers and they are very bad please don't get them. They were huge and mushy and all you could taste was the dough you can buy something else like the wings which are a lot better.

  • Koko G.
