Yesterday my father purchased some chicken sandwiches from this restaurant. I sat down to eat a sandwich and it was great. I have grown up eating these sandwiches. Later on in the evening I sat down to eat the other sandwich and it was chewy. Couldn’t figure out why until I went to the kitchen and started peeling off the breading. I reached out to the restaurant today at 11:26am to let them know I had a food safety concern. I was told I would be called back in an hour. I received a call back at 3:40pm from a man who identified himself as the manager- his name was Joe commisso. Immediately this man was extremely rude, told me it was unlikely that the chicken I ate was raw as they cook them in batches and he has not received any other complaints. That’s reasonable; however, here are the photos for others to decide if this chicken sandwich is pink and raw enough to be upset. He asked me to bring the sandwich in but I do not drive and don’t have anyone who can bring it in for me now. I offered to email photos to him which he said “what am I suppose to do with photos”. After hanging up on him for being condescending and rude to me he proceeded to call me back and I let him know I would be forwarding my images and complaint to Toronto Public Health, as I don’t see the need to have a back and forth with someone so rude. He did not like that. He did not even offer an apology for his restaurants negligence, but instead told me it was unlikely it was raw and “what do you want me to do about it”. I have to tell a grown man to apologize? What an embarrassment. After I told him I would not want another sandwich from this place he told me “so there’s nothing I can do then!” How does someone think this is an acceptable way to approach this situation? I don’t want anything from anyone; however, I do expect to be spoken to in a respectful and apologetic manner. I called to make the business aware that this had happened and to be apologized to. This is unacceptable food, and even more unacceptable customer service. Accidents happen, but there is no reason for a business owner to be so rude to a customer with a genuine concern. After checking online, this business has multiple infractions with Toronto Public Health for “failure to insure food is not contaminated/adulterated”, so I am really not surprised after finding this out. Needless to say I do not recommend eating here, nor will I ever eat here again.

I wish I could give 0 stars for this establishment, but unfortunately I can’t! We have been customers of Commisso Bros & Racco for many years. In the last couple of years, we noticed the place going downhill fast and furious. A few times, we purchased expired products, like pasta and packaged cakes, which initially we thought were a slip, which can happen to anyone. We haven’t complained about those mishaps. However, yesterday we had it! It was the last drop to fill the cup. We purchased some shortbread cookies, which in the window under the counter looked really delicious. At the beginning, when we asked for them, everyone had no idea how much they were going for. They had a long chat establishing their price, then they took forever weighing them, and finally we paid $17 for them. I am posting a picture of them. At home, we wanted to have them for dessert, but my husband almost broke a tooth trying to bite into one! THEY WERE ALL MONTHS OLD!!!!!! Not days or weeks, but months old! Hard as ROCKS!!! How can a BAKERY sell MONTHS OLD PRODUCTS?!?!?! One expects to get FRESHLY baked goods in a bakery, isn’t it?!?! This was the LAST TIME we shopped at this terrible place, and I advise anyone who ever remembers the old place, under its old management to not even think to shop there! Dirty counters, mould everywhere, including inside the counters, rude salespeople, terrible customer service and sanitation issues by the truckload!!!! Shut the place down or burn it to the ground! A million thumbs down

I used to frequent this take out hot table a bit over the years. It's been around as long as I know and then some. The quality has gone down. They make fresh breads & buns that has remained the same and limited grocery items. Awesome baked italian goods. I ordered the chicken on a bun with sauce .. be sure to ask for light sauce or your bun will be soggy by the time you are ready to eat it. They have an assortment of hot items to eat with veges to go with pasta or meat, however too many sweet peppers and not enough tongs for serving food with. I witnessed one set of these used for veal, chicken, pepper mix with onions and for scooping tomato sauce to put on the dipped meat. They must of been short of the tongs that day, because I only saw three for a hot table of at least 12 items. Bring cash to pay for your purchase, they have a interac machine which will cost you to use it, increasing your purchase cost. The staff are always nice and lots of construction guys go there as its tucked away in an industrial area, on a main through way. They have another location off Jane south of Finch that I've been to as well. One thing about these locations is that they always seem to be open. For these reasons I give them a 4-Star rating.

Plenty of parking, at first it appeared to be a truck stop full of trucks and trailers, don't be put off. Expected to hear the music to the Godfather when entering, no guidos playing dominos at front of store. First impression when entering was a feeling of going back in time, an old fashion grocery store vibe, all staff seemed to be Italian family members/relatives, quick to ask for our selection Hot food items/sandwiches towards the back. Hot items in trays behind a glass counter for your perusal, reminded me of waiting in line with my tray during the lunch period in my grade school cafeteria. Ordered the veal sandwich, went with the hot instead of sweet peppers, could have used a little more sauce, peppers had a nice kick to them. Sandwich bread had a soft dense chewy texture, probably baked on premises. Nice assortment of Italian pastries, I went with the cannolis. The shells were soft instead of crunchy hard, probably sitting out too long. Should fill cannoli shells upon order like they do in Little Italy NYC to keep the shells fresh and crunchy. Filling was dense and cheesy. Their rum babas also looked delicious, maybe next time. Old style sandwiches need to make a comeback for the sake of humanity

Over 30 years, I've been periodically visiting this location. It used to be my go-to place after a night of drinking with friends... good food and open 24 hours. For the first time in years, I visited in March 2023... this time with my family. Food was ok, bread is good, location decor/condition is disgusting and deplorable. Ran into the owner and that's what HE told ME! Lol. We ate in the sit down area and it cannot even be described! All I can say, is that some third world country restaurants that I've previously visited, we're so much cleaner and better maintained. My kids went to use the washroom and the urinal was full to the rim, with a pure black liquid. The stench was overwhelming and there were huge rat traps everywhere. Tables chairs, walls and floors were covered in stains and old caked-on food. It was unheated and quite cold. Honestly, it was like visiting Screemers for a family dinner! My kids thought that I was playing a horrible joke on them. Lol. Well, a lasting memory at the very least!

Ive been coming to this location for over 15 years but in most recent years I havent been there. It's been awhile and I was craving their veal sandwich. Ultimately I decided to stop by. After many years of not coming here I've noticed a drastic change, the atmosphere was dead and the employees seemed not to care if customers were in the store. The employees came across as "lazy and bored" The two ladies working at the hot-table were very uninviting! They lacked in customer service and seemed as they would rather be at home, then at work. I felt as If I was bothering the lady-employee by asking her to make me a sandwich! Unfortunately they didn't have hot peppers so I asked for provolone cheese and mushrooms. The sandwich was good.. just not made with love other than that, I don't have any complaints. I do recommend Commission Bros.& Racco Italian Bakery to everyone. It's a good spot to grab a quick meal. Try the veal sandwich [$13] Food 4/5 Atmosphere 1/5 Service 1/5

I need to open this review with a story, that I swear is relevant to this review. On my 18th birthday, my parents told me that, within reason, I could ask for any experience, to go anywhere (within a few hours drive I knew). I'd been to most of the local attractions of note by then, and so I knew of only one place I really wanted to go; the Legendary "Commisso's" as we always knew it growing up. As I said, I grew up with this place, and it serves both the best veal sandwich I have ever had (and I have had *many*), but it serves it with the veal kept in delicious marinara sauce, and with *incredibly* hot peppers, to my delight. It has many other peerless Italian cuisine offerings, 24/7, cash only. If you're in the area, their Eggplant Parmesan is also amazing, if veal isn't to your tastes. But fellow carnivores...that veal...it haunts my dreams...

When you read the reviews saying this place is long past its prime, and is now a dead, dirty, dingy place serving old food left out too long….believe them. Used to have the best veal sandwich in town. It’s now $15, and the ‘hot table’ storing the food looks as dubious as it gets. Place was dead at lunch hour. When they’ve lost their regulars and their turnover, it’s not a good sign. There are now hundreds of better Italian sandwich places in this city.

I used to loved Commisso Bros, so whenever I happen to find myself in the area, I visit for some pasta and cannoli. Unfortunately, after several years absence, my most recent return visit was very unsatisfying. The cannoli were inedible - very soft and flavorless. I've since spoke with friends who have reported similar experiences. I've also noticed that several recent reviews report something similar (people who used to enjoy Commisso Bros noticing the quality has declined). I'd recommend other options for Italian bakeries/hot counters

  • Travel Advisor

Used to be best veal sandwich in the city. It’s history, not anymore. I returned after few years and am A bit disappointed. ☹️The bun has no taste at all, not the tasty one that used to be. Likewise the veal and bucket mushrooms tasteless. Also, I found the shop a bit dirty, floor, ceiling and around the food serving area. (photos posted.) Hot table not really neat and tidy. Staff looked bored and not really smiling and friendly. Bored to be asked! At least panzerotti are still good. Invest in cleanness! Food safety comes first!

LONG TIME stop for west-enders at any time....ESPECIALLY late nights for some great food!!!! Open 24 hours a day (WHO DOES THAT?!?!?) and hot table has massive selection of the usual suspects. A VEAL SANDWICH ($11+) which actually tastes like a meaty veal unlike other bland offerings from so-called "Italian" chains which are hiding bland meat under numerous toppings. On the down side the hot table didn't really give me a HOT veal but the bun was terrifically fresh and crusty. CASH ONLY....so be prepared.

Haven't been here for years due to living outside of the city. Being back brought back so many memories. Food is still delicious, my son had to have a veal on a bun with me while I reminisced. Staff is still super nice and friendly, make you feel at home. This trip we didn't grab anything from the bakery, but have had them in the past and were great, nice and light. Open 24/7, well lit parking lot as well as the location itself. Most definitely will be back when I'm out this way. Highly recommended

We have been coming here on a weekly basis for the last couple of years. The food is delicious...the fagioli soup is yum, yum...delicious vegetables...the eggplant lasagna is to "die for"...amazing!!...enjoy their regular lasagna as well. Veal sandwiches-best deal in the City of Toronto. We have found all the staff very friendly and accommodating. Prices are so affordable and reasonable (better to have good prices than a fancy, glitzy overpriced joint). Bravo Commisso Bros.

  • Rissa H

This place was a frequent stop on Jane street some 20 to 30 years ago. It still tastes excellent. We had chicken parm and a pork sandwich. Both were very moist and excellent. In case you haven’t been here before there is a wide array of hot food. Lots of sandwiches as well as pasta to choose from. It is also a small grocery store. There is no place to sit officially but you can head to the back on some tables if needed. Not restaurants quality seating, be warned.

  • Gary Dore

Parking and exiting during busy periods is troubling. Very quick service, excellent food, price and portions more than makeup for the stress of parking and exiting the lot. Variety and freshness of food very good. Lineup to pay pretty good as it is cash only! I love that! Best is to time your visit just before or just after lunch and dinner rushes but still worth the visit alternatively!

  • Diana Tomasella

Honestly this place could use a major makeover but it's been around since I was a little kid and I'm 52 now....it's a dumpy landmark in the community. They still make amazing veal sandwiches and awesome rice balls which you have to smother in tomato sauce. The great thing is it's open 24 hours. You can get your Italian fix at any time. You gotta love this place regardless of the look.

  • Trucho125

Got A Veal Sandwich with A Fly in It. I bought 2 spicy veal sandwich I called and told her she said she would give me my money. But because I didnt mention i got 2 sandwich and a veal dish she wouldnt give me the money back. I told her after seeing that mo one would be able to eat after that and she told me that since the others didnt have bugs in it would be fine to eat

  • Salvatore Casto

Where’s the meat ? My wife went by to commisso bakery to pick up a few things for Christmas Eve when it came for everyone to have rice balls it was a complete disappointment very little toppings inside no meat for which you would see in a traditional rice ball what was inside the ones she bought was peas and cheese not to mention I’m sure the rice balls are over priced!

  • Mamma Goddess

Worst veal sandwich ever. This place should close its doors for good. Both locations are abysmal at best. Half empty, dirty, lack of care by the owners and the veal was unpalatable. It literally tasted like uncooked bread dough. There was a time this was a great spot for veal sandwiches and that time is not now. I took 2 bites of my $12 sandwich and had to throw it out.

  • William DeJonge

I been going to this location since the early 70's veal sandwich was $2.75 back then.

I haven't been there in awhile, but it was always a favourite place! Now my son is driving and I told him...you want the best veal sangweech ever? Here's where you need to go!!!! My husband and I are planning a trip to the city soon, and you'd better believe we'll be stopping there!! Olives, provalone, amazing buns and everything else you can think of!!!!

  • Sam B

The pepperoni panzos are absolute garbage. $6 for one and it hardly had any cheese in it. Mostly just breaded and hardly filled with anything other than a few merely small pieces of pepperoni and like maybe half a table spoon of cheese. I remember when they use to pull apart and have that cheesy goodness but not any more. Worst panzos ever here

  • readkem

My boyfriend took me here for the first time today he got cheese and mushroom panzerottis. They were so delicious! The second he brought them in the car my mouth started instantly watering. They smelt so good and tasted even better. They definitely don't cheap out on the cheese either. So good and can't wait to make a trip back for some more!

Classic old school Toronto institution. Hot table veal, lasagna, vegetables and more. Classic Italian sandwiches made to order. Usually a few pizza slice options. Lots of sweet stuff too. Wide selection of drinks. The pricing is pretty good in these times and the portions are not small. If you have never been here, you gotta check it out.

  • Tom Turnbull

Great food! Lost a star because they only take cash, and their ATM was broken. Too bad as I would have bought a lot more if they at least accepted debit. They have a wide selection of baked goods plus prepared foods and drinks. I had a veal sandwich that really impressed me. Too bad I couldn't buy dessert, and breakfast, and some buns...

  • Cameron Pichette

The food here is Amazing! AUTHENTIC Italian, Stuffed Pepper, chicken Parmesan, Veal Parmesan, Lasagna and a huge deli and fresh bread section where you can find everything. They have it all including homemade cheesecake, cannoli, biscotti ** MADE FRESH ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT! OPEN 24 hrs and the staff are familiar, friendly and helpful.

  • Steve Nunez

Decent food but that’s what you can expect from a 24 hour spot. You can’t expect fresh food right when you come in the door but since it is 24 hour you really can’t complain. Customer service here is pretty good, all in all four out of five stars for customer service and food. Would be a lot less if they weren’t 24 hours to be honest.

  • Diane C.

Wish this bakery was closer to home! We have been coming here for years and the food is constantly amazing! I veal sandwich is the best by far in Toronto and the lady that serves is always friendly. Wish I had taken a picture but I was super hungry. Great place to get the baked goods, fresh bread and hot sandwiches made to order!

  • Delfina Fuentes

Really nice food . But the cashier ruins the good experience. He is the owners family but has a really bad Attitude. Is like begging for a plastic bag every time , he never puts the staff in the bag . Plus every time he ask for how many bread you have ,goes and puts his nose to check like your are stealing or Really rudely

  • Chris Levien

Was very upset to have ordered all our food to find out they don't have debit and their ATM doesn't work. This forced me to go hunting for a bank machine. 45mins later I came back only because I had to pick my wife back up.

Priced well.. hot table is 50/50 some stuff is good, some stuff is not so good.. the veal and meatball sandwiches, rice balls, lasagna all great.. then rest isn't.. some of the stuff depends on how fresh it is or if it's been sitting there all day. But it's a great spot for the simple fact it's 24hrs.

  • Joe Cargnello

Picked up some food trays for a New Year party including breaded veal in tomato sauce and the eggplant lasagna. Not only are the portions very generous but the food was fresh (read not dry or overcooked) and DELICIOUS! Games were played to decide who got leftovers. Great start to 2023!

  • Scott Hughes

Visited as I was in the area, and its been a few years since I last ate there. Veal was dry, and meatballs were mostly filler, hardly any meat, was luke warm instead of hot. Maybe it was a bad day, but I ended up throwing it away. It used to be so good, so I'm majorly disappointed

  • Chris McMurdo

One of the best places to get real hot table food in the middle of a late night shift. Been coming here for 10 years now and the quality hasn’t changed. Although the price has gone up like everything else, it is still my first pick . Plus you can get a nice shot of espresso

The steam table is great with fresh bread and desserts. Great veal panzzerotis . The grocery side looks a little dated. Prices are ok. Wiil go back again . This has been a staple in the neighborhood for decades with veal sandwiches, Nonna would be proud of.

  • Steve D

I've been coming here for years. They make an amazing veal sandwich, and everything on their hot table is fresh and delicious. Bakery items are excellent too. Do be aware this place takes only cash, but there is an ATM available for a $2.50 service fee.

  • Fabian V.

Sorry but this place is dirty and sketchy. It seems that there's never a good supply of products. Hot table is ok, but you can tell some items are re-heated from previous days. The sausages are shriveled and sometimes the veal cutlets look dry.

  • Jason Francis

Been coming here for a year now for their, mini chocolate cannolis. OMG BEST EVER! Highly recommend the pepperoni & cheese Panzo & chocolate cannolis! My gf loves them, and we go there atleast twice a week to get the mini chocolate cannolis

This is a great place for a late-night bite to eat. The veal sandwich and the meatball sandwich are the go to sandwiches to get here. Though they have both gone up in price and the taste isn't quite like it used to be, they're still great

This place has been here since my mom was growing up in Toronto. They don’t need a review. The pasta sauce is very acidic but tastes great on a Veal sandwich. It’s always open The pepperoni at the front counter is really really good.

The ATM was down when I was there as they only take cash but I just happened to have the right amount for what I purchased. Open every day 7 days a week! Great Italian hot food and bakery also espresso available. Love it!

Was so disappointed with the cannolis, wasn’t even able to eat them. They seemed to be very old or sitting out for a long time. They were moist/soft and the cream was dried up. Very disappointed and not worth the visit.

  • Rita Lucia

If I had the option to give this place a ZERO, I would.. Watch out for Expiry dates on every product you buy. A very dishonest and very dirty place. And they only take cash.. I do not recommend this place whatsoever!

  • Rochelle Jack

When asked about having bread to purchase the lady behind the counter had very little customer service to her customers! She was rude and disrespectful! You will lose customers with this employee working there!

  • Antonietta Bozzo

Haven't been there for many years. When we entered this bakery, it was discussing, filthy dirty!!!!! It used to be clean and inviting. Not any more. Health department must inspect ASAP. …

  • Fearless money

Just left and I’m absolutely disgusted with the bread and lasagna and the veal. This place used to be good now it’s garbage. I’d rather buy a hotdog from the corner vendor than ever buy food from here again.

  • Justin B

I want to enjoy this place as it has nostalgia. However, it’s just gone downhill and is now dirty and and unpleasant. Commisso wasn’t like that in the past and there’s other Italian bakeries in the West End.

  • Mike Chan

About $10 for a very generous sandwich. $3.50 for big slices of pizza as well. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth checking out. Shopping for stuff around the home can build up quite an appetite.

I LOVE Commisso's!! I have been going here for over 20 years. Nothing negative to say about this place - come and enjoy some good food, great portion sizes at great prices. Bonus, they're open 24 hours!
