I finished my trip in October around South Africa and Namibia with a car rented via Drive South Africa Car Rental. I would like to express my reservations regarding the manner of implementing my car rental contract. 1. The car rented to me did not meet safety requirements and did not have the appropriate equipment: - the car was equipped with two spare wheels, but they were missing wheel mounting bolts. There were only bolts for aluminum rims, not for steel rims. - the car was equipped with a car jack intended for small cars (up to 1,400 kg) - my car was Toyota Hilux. On October 6, when we had a damaged wheel, we had to ask for external help because we couldn't raise the car or screw on the spare wheel. We were equipped with two spare wheels, but due to lack of equipment we could not use any spare wheels. This happened in the middle of the Namib Desert and we had great difficulty continuing our journey. Finally, the Drive South Africa partially covered the cost of purchasing a new tire due to the claim handling fee (we had a full insurance option). 2. On October 10, as agreed, we went to the drop off point to return the car in Windhoek Namibia. The address of this place in Widhoek was provided to us in the Voucher and in an email from Drive South Africa Agent. Upon arrival, it turned out that the Drop off site no longer exists there. We were told by phone to go to another point, about 40 km away. Of course, this situation disorganized our next day of travel and resulted in the need to incur additional transport costs in the amount of $600 Namib - this cost was finally fully covered by Drive South Africa. Any other compensation was not provided by Drive South Africa - even though we lost a lot of time, money and found ourselves in a dangerous situation due to an ill-prepared car. We had a bad experience after using Drive South Africa Car Rental.

We rented 2 RV from « Drive South Africa” last winter 2019; we chose this company because they were the only one offering a camper van (small RV, Class B type), among all RV renters available in SA. At the pick up time, we had our first surprise: “Drive South Africa” wasn’t the real RV renter; it was handled by Maui South Africa instead, who also seems to handle “Brits SA” by the way. The second surprise was that they didn’t have the smaller RV (Campervan) that we have requested. “Lucky… you have a free upgrade today”… The only RV available were the 25-foot class B, and quite old (90000Km and 65000Km), and both were really showing their age! On the road, in the following 2 weeks, both RV broke down (engine problem), at different times, in the middle of nowhere. Each one had to be towed and they have to send replacement RV. One of the replacement RV had 180,000Km on the meter! It was a very scary experience, being stuck in the back country, with a very poor cellular connection. I must say that Maui tried hard to help us at that time, but those events were a disaster…. No more fun possible. We also had to rent a room in the hotel, and lost a lot of food in those 2 RV replacements. We asked Maui SA a full refund, at the end of those two awful weeks, but they offered about $100. In conclusion: 1. “Drive South Africa,” was offering a product (CamperVan) that they didn’t have themselves 2. “Drive South Africa” do not rent RV themselves, anyway 3. We were not advised that Maui were to manage our RV rental 4. Maui seems to have very old RV on rental; renters should be aware of that… On each RV, we had engine problem, tire problem, water heater not working, bad smell in the toilet / shower .... and not counting all the very worn-out equipment (curtain, locks, cabinets, electric cable, etc.)

All was good and rate was competitive until something happens to the car and you need information from DSA. We noticed a small dent on the driver door upon car return and was told we will have to pay for it. No choice but we had Super Cover from DSA right? Wrong. We did pay a higher upfront for a rate that was quoted as Super Cover (vs Standard Cover) on their website, and we thought we had paid for Super Cover Insurance since that rate indicated there was zero excess. Would you have thought that it wasn't an insurance cover if the car rental website specifically stated the rate as Super Cover with zero excess? So I wrote to enquire about claiming insurance for the cost of the dent and was told I had to be responsible for it. I asked for a policy copy of the Super Cover Insurance and was given DSA's rental T&C. I wrote again and told them I needed the insurance policy for the car rental and was again told to check my rental contract with Bidvest. Really? Did I actually pay for any insurance cover for the car from DSA at the Super Cover rate?? I asked them again to explain what they meant by Super Cover (in case I had misinterpreted) and received no response. If anyone from DSA is reading this, I would like to invite them to respond and explain in this public arena on what the Super Cover rate is on your website. To anyone who wants to rent from them, good luck and Buyer Beware (and you better cross your fingers and toes nothing happens to the car).

Ref # DSCR459075 1.Rental Amount R1,700 (4 days x R425) Please note: your requested vehicle can only be confirmed once payment is received. – I was charged R1780 when I paid??? 2. Extras Requested Contract Fee x 1 @ R 90 per unit Estimated Delivery Fee = 0 Total = R 90 Paid when collecting vehicle, subject to availability. – I was charged R110 when I paid 3. Renter Comments I am 76 years old 4. Payment Details R1,700 – Rental Total (R0) – Amount Paid R1,700 – Amount Outstanding Please note: your requested vehicle can only be confirmed once payment is received. I was charged R1780 when I paid??? 5. When I booked the vehicle I was offered 300kms per day – when I paid my voucher only showed 200kms per day 6. Strange that the age limit on the application only went to 70. I am 76 years old and still healthy and drive my own car - remember the President of USA is 78 years old.

Great communication before hire period, very poor communication after. I rate a company on their ability to sort problems out. The vehicle I paid for was not what I received and I have not been refunded my deposit correctly. I've been short changed, that's code for robbed. I paid a large amount of money for 16 days with a fully kitted 4x4, I received a sub standard very tired vehicle with no hot water capacity, something I paid for. The vehicle does not belong to them, clearly they're only an agent but they took my money and they should be accountable and sort the problem out with Avis 4x4 hire. Their attitude is " we'll get back to you..." that's another code for we all know what. I've given them more than enough time to sort this matter before posting this review, it's more than a month. I would steer clear if you want to visit South Africa hassle free. That goes for Avis safari rentals too.

We recently hired a camper through Drive south Africa in Namibia. It was a very disappointing experience. Three days after we paid our deposit we were told the camper we had paid for was not available. We decided to go ahead with the second choice. On pick up day we were taken to the depot at 9 am and told our camper would be 25 mins late. Four hours later it was delivered but the fan belt was squealing and the tail lights didn't work. Back to the mechanic and we finally got away @ 2 Pm. Five hours after the arranged pick up time and lost most of the first day of or holiday. The camper compartment was old and in the second week of the hire period the passenger seat belt became jammed and would not extend. Our advice - go with another company. There are plenty

2 days before flying to Cape Town, we had booked a car and received payment and booking confirmation, so we did not worry too much that the morning we flew at 6 (am) we had not yet received the voucher as we figured it would be there when we land...within the announced 48 hours...When we landed, we called and were told there was no car available! (?) A notification email was sent to us at 10 (for the car that we were supposed to pick up at 12). They didn't help us out at all to find another car but basically told us that there was nothing they could do for us in a less nicer tone...I had booked with them before and had no problems but this was not only unacceptable but also really bad service...so I would not book a car with Drive South Africa again.

We hired a car from PE twice through DSA, and both times we got a great vehicle. 4x4 from thrifty, which went without a hitch. In fact the chap who received the car back managed to clear it and return a couple of items before we left. We didn't know which company for the second rental, so unfortunately had a bit of time doing the rounds of all the car companies. I had printed the online booking page only, and it didn't have a company or a specific rental number. Maybe more information on the web page when the booking goes through? Especially for ATDD (attention to detail deficit) people like me. Other than that, the service is good, easy to book, and covers all the relevant car hire companies.

Was a bit late for collection at Bidvest, 30 minutes, ended up waiting 45 minutes for somne kids to decide how to pay for their rent. I asked the agent to just process my reservation while he was waiting for these kids to understand whether they had money in the bank or not, but got told to wait, not impressed. It then took 15 minutes for the other person to understand which car i had been given, which was parked in a very narrow space between a massive concrete pylon and a car, they wouldn't drive it out of here and i had to risk scratching the car to before i even made it to the road. It was easy to book and pay with DriveSouth Africa, not impressed at all with the poor service of Bidvest

The website is easy to navigate but I would have much preferred if there was an option to just view the price per day for the vehicles without necessarily having to fill in the booking form. Especially for people who are still in the planning stages and who haven't really made up their minds...I just wanted an indication of how much it would cost for a trip that we are planning to have in the last quarter of the year (no dates yet) mainly for planning purposes at this stage and I found it a bit of an inconvenience to go through the whole process. I however got a qoute in record time and loved the vehicle specs.

Drive South Africa is good, but unfortunately I had to deal with Europcar Bloemfontein Airport. The experience was unpleasant because I was treated like a favour was being done for me. Stubborn person I had to deal with, plus I didn't get the car I had booked on Drive SA website. a Mere shrug of the shoulders and the key shoved in my hand. I couldn't wait to give them their car back. Luckily that stiffneck clerk was not on duty, cause I was ready for him. Came to edit my review, and removed a star. Looking back I havnt experienced such service. This one was one for the books lol

It's not the 1st time I hire a car via Drivesa. The best thing about it is the service, the response and the quickest time they get you the car you need at the urgent time. Just book and pay it's sorted within an hour or 2 . . I normally hire a Vw Kombi but this time I rented a sedan for easter holidays it's an awesome experience. The fact that u don't have to worry bot how much kms u travel .thank you very much and definitely I will keep using you on any of my transport needs . Their 2 ladies that I get service from Charlynn and Bukeka the best ever. You the best

I feel like I was sold a dream on the website. I made a request in the evening of 7 October and received the acknowledgement email Friday 8 October. Other than that, nothing. I followed up between Tuesday and Wednesday of this week but the lady I spoke with did not seem interested in assisting me. Apparently it takes 2 hours to get feedback from the service provider. This statement has to be a joke. Anyway, I still have received nothing after another follow up email this week and my call went unanswered today. Is Drive South Africa really a legit business? Golly.

They charge about 25% more than the company they rent the car from (try getting the car directly from avis) They overcharged us by about 7000 Rand, then took almost a whole month to send it back and then return less money than the overcharged amount because the currency got weaker. After confronting them with that they stopped replying to emails. The car and the renal with avis was fine but then get it with them directly, it saves a lot of effort and money for the same vehicle and conditions. Unfortunately not recommended

Drive SA advertises a whole lot of cars available for rental. When you book they return an email saying a consultant will get hold of you the next day, thanking you for your "enquiry". Have checked all my email boxes including spam, there was no communication. So I call and am told there are no cars available at all. I check with the rental companies direct and there are plenty. Disgusting unprofessional service, to trap you into thinking their rates are good and waste your time. Will never ever use this scam company.

The car was booked via the Drive Africa website and the car came from Thrifty. I was aware of an extra R50 contract fee and a R749.99 cross border fee. My original quote from Drive Africa was for R2396 excluding the above and I was charged R2920 which I cannot understand. Next time I'll get clarification prior to paying. The car went well but it shuddered. This was reported on its return. The cross border papers were not ready at collection so someone slipped up somewhere.

Overall a wonderful experience. After they've picked me up from the airport I received a full explanation about all the functions and materials which come with the car. During my trip making up to 4000 km I didn't have any trouble whatsoever with the car. We had good comfort not only driving but sleeping on the rooftop tent also. Returning the car went very smooth after which I got a lift to the airport. Would certainly do again!

The booking process is not seamless, not efficient nor user friendly. After getting a booking reference number, you wait for an agent to call you, then he/she must call the car rental company to confirm availability of vehicle, then you are sent a link to pay, etc. This is just too cumbersome. The advantage is that you can hire a vehicle for unlimited mileage at reason rates compared to the car hire companies.

I've been using DriveSA for a while now and every time their service and delivery has been impeccable. They also provide the best quotes as far as I'm concerned, I would highly recommend them to someone who has never used them before to give them a chance and I don't think you'll be disappointed. Finally and in delight, I was also upgraded on my car hire this time around, needless to say I was very happy!!

The Corolla we hired had tyres that were almost bald & definitely needed replacing. We pointed this out at the time of collection but received no comment. The car itself had some damage front & back. The worst part was we returned the vehicle with a full tank of petrol only to receive an email invoice charging us for another 5 litres of petrol plus a service fee for doing so.....is this standard practice?

All went pretty well. The truck was great and everything functioned as it should. The only reason I did not give it five stars is because when we went to the agreed-upon pickup location at the agreed-upon time, which was an Avis Off-Road Rental location, nobody was there. At that point we had to go through a number of calls before we could get someone to meet us for the pickup. Everything else was great!

All that for unlimited mileage!To think that when I approached the rental companies for the same car,the rates where ridiculous with limited mileage and very high insurance excess. I had to pay extra R5000 which I was not made aware off when I collected the 8 Seater car after booking the car at R4000 online. I then received a call this morning that I still have to pay R7000 again. What was the R4000 payment for except the standard insurance cover with R50 000 liability should anything happen to the car? Hiring an 8seater combi for R16 000 for 3days is far too much

The experience was just super awesome, i mean the service is spot on when it comes to full information and advices. Am never going to use other services but this one only, this is my home now. Keep up the good service. When issuing a collection voucher you need to make sure the client's name is on the voucher not yours, with me the agent's name was on the voucher. you. .

Disappointing. I made a booking on Saturday 30th October and it is now Tuesday 2nd November and there has been no confirmation of the booking or proposed alternative. I appreciate that the office was closed on Saturday and Sunday and that yesterday was a public holiday in SA. However, I need to confirm to move forward for my other plans and arrangements.

Very good service, helpful and considerate. Three examples: 1) our rooftopadder(joint) broke in Swaziland and one employee came driving 300 kilometers for a fix at the border between Swaziland and South-Africa. 2) they deliver free shuttle pick-ups from and to the airport 3) possibility for free overnight sleep when/if necessary.

I understand that rules are rules, but we do not, and will not, carry any credit card, so this is a no-doer to us. The deposit fee is also absolutely ridiculous. R50,000 deposit? If it was R5,000 I might live with it. So, all from overseas, if you have a credit card. You may need a second one to cover your other expenses.

Booked a car and got confirmation that the car was reserved. Made payment and only to be advised 2 hours later that the service provider had no cars. There where no alternatives given and was told the money i had already paid would be refunded after a few days. Utterly disappointing and unreliable in my opinion.

Drive SA is very transparent. Before you collect the vehicle you know exactly how mich deposit one is paying as well. Their response is prompt...you don't stay on the phone for long and the free km's come in handy as you're guaranteed not to pay extra on km's. Car hiring has never been this exciting...

We took the option to have the car delivered to and collected from our hotel which, for a modest charge, was well worthwhile. The car was virtually new with low milage and performed perfectly over the 3 weeks and 2400 Kms that we covered. I would not hesitate to recommend Drive South Africa

For me drive South Africa I found them useless whereby the only time you can be assisted is when you have a credit card, whereby most of the agents can assist you even if you have a Cheque card with your name on it. So I give them a zero rating it’s time to change the way you do business.

Bad experience. Although I paid for my car hire when I booked on the web-site I had to rent and pay for another car at OR Tambo because they did not accept my debit card. It cost me double and they refused to refund the payment I made when I first booked the car.

Very effective at first with great prices, but lacking in communication. They won’t let you know if the car you want to rent is available or not, so have a backup plan as it will probably be unavailable by the time they reply on your follow up emails

Booking was very easy. However then first had to wait almost an hour for the car, which then turned out to have a broken air-condition. Another hour wasted in finding another branch to exchange the car. Wasted valuable time.
