A few years between visits! Wow! Still love the outside vibe and the food!! (September 1st 2023) ----- Well done to all staff, your customer service went above and beyond this time 19th November 2021. We enjoyed a timely brekkie - so yummy! Especially love the choc Berry smoothies. -- (Edited after day of visit (originally 27th September) on October 7th, having spoken with assistant manager.) -- Originally visited on my Grandma's 100th Birthday on Monday 27th September, with family down from Queensland for brunch. The cafe section must have been busier then usual or they were short on staff. As we had to wait a long time for our brunch, and even that came out in dribs and drabs. We had our drinks and hubby his breakkie yet still he was waiting for his smoothie. We did receive a quick sorry for the late drinks however that was rather flippant. But still did not receive hubby's smoothie. After he went in to ask about it, it was made up then sat on counter for 5-10mins. Again another quick sorry. The smoothie was really delicious though! Hubby loved his eggs & his smoothie. I had a tea. Teens had milkshakes, my 6 year old had a milkshake too but they don't offer kids size ones, so I paid normal price anyway but in a smaller glass. It would be really good if you could add an option to the menu for this. ---- On since speaking with the hotel's assistant manager I have edited my review and really appreciate the explanation given for the day in question with the offer of a complimentary brekkie for one. Thank you so much, I look forward to my next visit at the Esplanade hotel.

refused to serve alcohol to a young man who was having his 21st birthday with his family. Manager pulled evidence of age card on him! without having a clear understanding of the actual liquor licensing act. He had presents and 21st cards on the table, even a 21st cake was placed behind the counter. The act stipulates 'reasonably suspects' the person is under 18. He clearly was over 18, it was his 21st birthday. The manager requires training on how to deal with difficult situations that the manager causes. The manager even refused to serve my wife as said manager assumed she would give it to the 21 year old whom she suspected of being under 18. To question ones integrity and to have such deluded perceptions is mindboggling. **IDEALLY** a complete refund of the night would be the best solution. Please do not dine here, they do not respect customers and their feelings. There are locally owned businesses that are SOUTH AUSTRALIAN owned that would welcome you as a customer within the area.

The venue itself is lovely, has a nice feel to it and is modern. The staff were very friendly and I saw them taking the time to help many of the elderly customers with their orders, explaining things, taking drinks back out to their tables and despite it being packed they weren't making anyone feel like they were holding the staff up or being a inconvenience. What let it down was the food. We got the Pie and the Steak Sandwich and were both really disappointed in the lack of quality. The pie was undercooked and the pastry had a lot of raw parts to it. The steak in the steak sandwich was paper thin and way over cooked but the fries were super under cooked and not eatable. Maybe it was just a off day, i'm unsure, but it's a significant drive for us to get here and we were only coming to celebrate our anniversary so I wouldn't say that we wont return, it will just be a big gap between visits.

I recently had an unfortunate experience at the Esplanade Hotel which is also my local hotel. My family have booked a table on Christmas Day. I feel compelled to share my disappointment. Despite explaining my health condition and dietary restrictions due to cancer, the hotel refused to allow me to order a child's meal, insisting on the $125 adult meal, which I cannot consume. Looking at a full plate of food actually makes me retch. Child’s portions I can handle if I eat slowly. This policy left me unable to join my family for this special occasion, causing significant upset. Despite my understanding of policies, I believe exceptions should be made in such circumstances. I have valued my past experiences at this hotel but this incident has left a lasting negative impression. I hope this review prompts a reconsideration of policies, fostering a more inclusive and compassionate approach for guests facing health challenges.

Shower doesn’t drain well, light through curtains and noisy throughout weekend. Blue light illuminated very disturbing deposits on walls, doors, fridge and cupboards. Absence I’ve affordable breakfast menu, PARKING WAS ABSURD, STAYED 3 DAYS, every return NO F’N PARK! No plates, bowls, cups, toaster or cutlery. No bedside cupboards! TX remote power not work, must turn on and off at mounted small tv screen.

WORST NIGHT EVER!! food was average, but the workers and managers were absolutely terrible. we had a waitress watching and spying on us while we eat, drink and talk. while the waitress was reporting back to the manager telling her false accusations. at the end of the night when we were eating my cousin's 21st birthday cake we were asked to LEAVE, which was crazy. My family and I have never been treated this way at a restaurant (SO UNBELIEVABLE). We had been told by another RUDE work member that the manager on watch had gone off crying and that it was my mum's fault. it was indeed not. These managers need to learn their lesson and be welcoming and nice to paying customers. My family and I are never coming back here. I had recorded a video that night of what the manager was telling us and if anything else happens I would release it.

I recently visited the Esplanade Hotel and was blown away by the beautiful view of the beach and ocean right on the esplanade. The ambiance was perfect for a lazy Sunday morning, and the staff were friendly and welcoming. One thing that really impressed me was the ability to order from my phone via a QR code on the table, which made the whole ordering process seamless and easy. I ordered the big breakfast with a vanilla latte, and while it was relatively good, it wasn't anything spectacular. The coffee was nice and had a lovely flavor that complemented the meal well. However, it was the stunning view and atmosphere that really made the experience special. I would highly recommend this restaurant for its decent food with a 5/5 view and atmosphere. Overall, a great spot for a relaxing breakfast or brunch with friends and family.

Best part was the view from the dinning room which looks more like a canteen. The steak sandwich had meat that was so tough and still had the fat left on which made it impossible to eat without deconstructing it and eating it with folk and knife. The schnitzels with gravy on side came with the smallest gravy pot I have ever seen, about 2 tablespoons full. The saddest tasting salad came with watered down dressing. Nothing was seasoned. The garlic bread was Turkish Bread which was doughy and barely warm. We talked for awhile at table hoping to chat to staff when clearing table but there was no clearing table and after approx 1/2 hour we left. So the service, there was none. Owner needs to look at this place with fresh eyes, we did not get what we paid for.

Just wanted very simple 2 coffee and cake. The place was full of inexperienced school leavers who didn’t know how to use the till to make the order but I was patient even after explaining 3 times the young girl got it wrong but I thought that’s okay I will go with that but after waiting 25 minutes and seeing that no one was going near the coffee machine or cake fridge I asked for my money back and told them I was going elsewhere which they seemed happy about because they were all afraid of the coffee machine and they only wanted to carry counter meals from the kitchen to the front bar I can see why people get angry at staff everywhere now because this is typical of inexperienced and untrained staff in hospitality and retail around Australia

This hotel is a prime location on the esplanade at Brighton. Unfortunately, the service and meals are terrible. We visited for a family member's birthday on a Saturday night with a group of 40. There was 1 person behind the bar serving drinks. It took forever to obtain a drink. The food was very basic, schnitzels, chips snd salad for an expensive price tag. The gravy which was served was in the smallest gravy bowl I have ever seen. Some members of the family waited 1 hour for their meals. For the amount of money that we spent as a group we should of been treated like kings & queens. Unfortunately, they are understaffed and under pressure. There are so many better pubs in the area. Very disappointed.

Went to the Espy Brighton Bistro today for lunch. Great window view of the ocean. Wonderful, polite and smiling staff. The menu is very good, but I decided to have the roast ‘special’ of the day, and it was the best roast I have had in years. Good portion size, real gravy, great ‘home style’ roasted veggies. Absolutely delicious!!! My lunch guest had a schnitty with pepper sauce, and loved it. Drink and food prices were good, true value for money. When you go out for a meal, you should remember it for the great food and good service, and that is how I will remember today. Smiling, happy staff, great food, excellent view, makes for a relaxing meal, so Thank you to all staff

  • Liam Harrison

The food wasn’t bad, but service left a lot to be desired. Long wait time? Understandable. Errors in the meals? It wasn’t a big deal, it was packed and didn’t want to make a fuss. A waiter refusing to acknowledge no one ordered a the meal they made, even after seeing our receipts? Now that’s a bit much. We accepted a meal we didn’t order as it seemed clear we had no other option – you did not need to rub salt on the wound by actually bringing out the correct meal 10 minutes later and walking off in a huff about it when you realised we had all been served. An apology would have been a nice side, but instead we just got salads (+1 meal) we didn't ask for.

At the restaurant: order a pizza for my husband and me. The service cashier, who toke the order, was rude and seemed extremely bore. The same girl brought the pizza to the table but not plates or cutlery. At my request for plates she brought little saucers. I asked again for dinner plates and cutlery. She showed her disgust for my request. The place was very dirty and the cakes seemed very out day.

A decent pub with picturesque views looking over the Brighton Beach coastline. There is you're traditional ordering at the main counter, or a QR code you can scan and pay for immediately at each table. Service is generally attentive and prompt, however there tends to be a longer wait using the QR code. The salt and pepper squid was light and not too greasy, chips also crispy. The fish and chips were excellent, great value for money. If you're looking for a decent pub meal with a great view, it's pretty easy to recommend. We will most likely return.

We used the me&u on our table to order our food and wine, thought we would try it out for the first time. Very disappointed that we waited for our bottle of wine so long that I had to go up to the bar and remind them. They had missed my order I then had to carry my own bottle of wine and wine cooler and glasses back to the table myself. Will not bother next time, will just go up to the counter to order. I don't think we get charged a credit card fee either when we order at the counter.

Sign said wait to be seated. So my friends and I waited just over ten minutes, no staff came to seat us so we seated ourselves. After another 10 minutes as we were about to go order drinks from the bar a waiter came over and asked us if we'd reserved the table (there was no reserve sign), we explained no one had seated us so we seated ourselves. He had the nerve to give us attitude while asking us to shift elsewhere (didn't even show us to another table).... the restaurant was next to empty. We just went somewhere else. Disgusting

I had a fantastic time at the esplanade hotel Brighton South Australia. The young waiter Jack was most helpful. He spoke to me about different wines and helped me chose one I would like, he then helped me and my 90 year old mother walk to the table. Afterwards I saw him helping a young boy with his women’s studies uni work called Oscar. Oscar was struggling with his homework and was stressed because he had an exam the next day, but Jack helped him gain his confidence, and Oscar went on to get a High Distinction. I will definitely be returning.

Booked a table for lunch, for Milang Old School House Women’s Group, as part of our monthly outing. After enjoying a drive along the coast, the ladies were happy to sit and enjoy a delicious meal, with views of the beach and people enjoying water activities. The service was wonderful, the atmosphere was welcoming, food delicious and prices were affordable. The ladies all enjoyed themselves and would be happy to return in the future. We’ve eaten here plenty of times before but never experienced what we did tonight. The manager with the terrible perm, poor moustache and even worse attitude is doing your business no favours. Singling out staff telling them to hurry up in front of people doesn’t make you a good manager, actually makes you look like a tool. Cleans our plates off our table and is ruder than your worst mother in law, just tops it off. You Mr, need to get a job where you don’t deal with the public !!!

Was my "Local" and we wanted to just order a meal at the bar and was informed that they can't do that and I had to use my phone to order and pay. The manager got involved and her attitude was far from what a "hospitality" manager's should be. Staff at this establishment have lost their friendly attitude. One staff member did advise of another venue and that is our new local as the staff and manager are professional, friendly and are aware of what the hospitality industry is about.

We came in today and unfortunately your staff were rude and very blunt. They picked and chose who they wanted to server and not do it in line up. We are a massive group that want to catch up once a month as some live in the north and some south so your place was in the middle. With the service today we were very disappointed and taken back as we have never been treated like that before. We get that you were busy but we have been there previous and it was the same but a totally different experience and atmosphere.

BEST SERVICE & FOOD! I had YHE BEST experience eating out here than I’ve had in a long time! I dined with my mum & dad in the cafe. I am that someone that likes to create my own meal, with and without all the things and Lana made this so easy for me. I got the beet & pumpkin salad with salt and pepper squid GLUTEN FREE. Lana went well out of her way to help us and did it with such kindness and authenticity. The chefs did a great job, our meals were big and delicious! Big thanks to Emma and the team here

We had a post-Dawn Service breakfast in the cafe on ANZAC Day 2023. Service was cheerful and speedy, and the food was competitively priced and well-prepared. Location is, of course, second-to-none. I can't think of anything that could have been done better.

Thought we would try the espy even after reading the reviews. We couldn't fault it, my table of six were very happy with their meals, I had the porterhouse steak, yes it was a bit pricey but it was worth it, best steak I've had in a long time, 350 grams of yummy, and the wife's prawns were great and a generous serve, I managed to pinch one. The service was good aswell. Don't take any notice of the bad reviews, check it out for yourself, I think you'll be suprised.

All a bit dated really. Don't know about the rooms we ate in the restaurant. Food was ok but the service a bit slow. One guy trying hard but struggling. Apparently it was busier than normal but I have read that quite a bit in the reviews for this pub. You would think that after all this time the management would had sorted out their staffing levels. Great spot on the beach but don't think I'll be going back, Sorry.

This was terrible to say the least today. Chicken ceaser salad. Burnt chicken, no bacon and the most awkward salad to try and cut up with lettuce placed this way. Worst meal I've ever ordered in 10 years of coming here. $28 not happy customer today. Waitress didn't even bother coming to clean the table after we asked her nicely after someone had just left and we went and got cleaner and cloths and did it ourself.

Hotel in a great location but tge service is hit and miss. Apparently there is a glitch in their order system so when you order nachos with beef chilli on their app, it goes through to the kitchen as pork crackling. Turns out it is nasty, warmed up in the microwave pork crackling too which they don't replace with the beef chilli you actually wanted and paid $5 extra for.

I live locally and always like pop in to the Espy for a social catch up. Unfortunately the wine selection is very limited and they do not stock many South Australian wines which deters me from bringing interstate visitors. Food always delicious. However drinks service was treated disrespectfully- ordered. Bottle Sav blanc, girl brought bottle bubbles - explained that wasn’t what I ordered and she said that’s what I have up here and made me feel it was my fault. She was incredibly rude with no apology. No effort was made to wipe/clean table either. Very disappointing experience. Standards have been lacking somewhat of late

The food is good and there is a lovely view of the jetty outside. The service is pretty slow. We ordered coffee after our meal, which took a long time to come. When it did, the coffee was spilt all over the saucers so they asked if we would like new ones so we said yes. They walked away and never brought the new saucers (with sugar and spoon) so eventually we had to go and ask them and had cold coffee.

Just had an amazing dinner at the Esplanade Hotel. Great food and friendly staff, especially Jack or as my 90 year old mother affectionately calls him - her little stud muffin. Mum said that Jack made her feel like a young woman again. Even though my dad didn’t seem too impressed at dinner, he can’t stop raving about how it’s the best night he has had in a long time. Service typical ALH under paid staff, menu average, actual food is what you should expect, classic pub grub, if you have to eat here order the staples. Schnitzel, burgers, pizza and avoid the rest. We had a coffee in the front bar today with another couple and the young man with an English accent who served us was particularly nice. He brought my husband a ginger and lemon tea with his drink as he had a sore throat. He was 19 years old and although he told us his name I could not remember it. A great and polite young lad and the hotel should be proud to have him as an employee.

Atmosphere was ok in the Bistro but could improve. The food across the table we dined with was very average. Would go for a beer but not for a meal again. I think the menu could improve significantly to reflect today's modern Australian food and the steak I had was terrible and priced more like high end. I'm not sure how a chef can get it so wrong.

April 25th-what a buzz! Street was loaded with folk, pub's tables were chockers but even so, the Bistro with its full-sized windows was a quiet haven to sit, eat, drink n enjoy the company of loved ones. Have enjoyed some top quality lunches at the Espy and always received amazing service and coffees from Aysha ! She might even be the coolest person I know.

Here tonight Disgusting service, dirty tables not wiped after use, staff ignoring patrons requests to wipe tables. Man with the man bun in sports bar the worst. Place has gone so far down feel ashamed bringing my guests to a local place. So disappointing. Staff standing around talking not doing anything.

Great pub with outdoor area overlooking the ocean. One complaint, we often stop for a beer and coffee and are surprised the staff dont take dirty plates etc back after delivery of food and drinks. Some dishes etc can be on vacant tables for 1/2 hr or so.

Such a wasted opportunity for an amazing location. Unfortunately the service is not great, neither speedy or friendly and, we live in SA, where is the variety and selection of local wines?

Service in the restaurant is lacking, specially at the price of the meals. Most staff were bust serving the other sections of the hotel. Specials very badly displayed and then hidden be signs. Steaks and chips were under cooked. Luckily they have the location, as it will bring people to them

Lovely place for family dinner. Went with my mum and two of her friends. Not too noisy, we could talk well. Good choice without too much range. Fair prices. Prompt service. Diane sauce on schnitzel a treat as always! Good size and not too big!

Took a little while for coffee cause it was so busy, but the coffee was alright so no stress. This girl named Myah was super nice to everyone at the table and made us feel very welcome, definitely one of the most chill staff members I’ve met at a place like this. Everyone else seemed very nice too.

Hey! We had a birthday dinner there, not only was the food amazing and the ocean views but the staff were super friendly and nice, shout out to the manager Bree for adding an extra touch!

Great location, food was ok , place is a bit tired & seems grubby. Staff not overly enthusiastic - dirty plates sitting on many tables and it wasn’t an overly busy time. Could be amazing with just a few tweaks. The location is what draws you in

Been lots of times and always had good coffee and food. We had pancakes today for brekkie although a little disappointed as the only evidence of maple syrup was one small drop on the side of the plate. Thankfully there was enough marscapone so it wasn’t too dry

Right in the center of it all. Short walk to train station. Right on beach. Absolutely loved it. Best place so far for location and activities I've ever stayed at. Upstairs at back rooms. Parking at back.

Have been a regular visitor and unfortunately noticed a steady decline in food and service quality in recent times. If all you’re after is a drink, nice view and bowl of chips then it should satisfy that need. Otherwise there are far better options nearby.

I can see why this place was packed on a Thursday at lunch time! 6 of us had lunch here, and all were pleasantly surprised with how hood the food was. Paired with great service, sea views and ice cold beer, I give The Esplenade Hotel an easy 5 stars.

Decent enough food. You don't get side plates and entrees to share are eaten off the table or napkins. Whilst bistros aren't known for service they had restaurant prices and bistro service and bistro quality food

Here's a thought, we're encouraged to order via the app on the tables. The problem is that as we witnessed, when the meal is brought to table there's no cutlery 'cos it's held at the counter where the orders are taken by a person. Just saying

This place is personally a bit of a hit and miss. The Salt and Pepper Squid is great, Seafood platter is nothing fantastic, neither are any of the breakfast options except for the Vegan breakfast as per the photos. Great location and service.

A humble but spacious dining room with all the standard pub meals with great quality, service and price. The most expensive at $42 was a half lobster on grain fed porterhouse steak. Apart from that, most meals were on the $20-$30 each with

I havnt been for a long time, but was disappointed in my recent visit. Chicken parmigiana was dry, my chips were undercooked, and my families food and drinks weren't much better. Steak dry. Lobster dry. Salt n pepper squid too floury. Soft

Nice meal for Father's Day and some good events on the day to boost the atmosphere. Friendly service, wide menu selection and great view. The food has improved since I was last there a year ago, though the salad bar isn't back as yet.

  • Diana Waines

Had dinner here, basic pub food. Generous helpings. We ordered the fish & chips meal, batter was light & crunchy, salad was just leaves with a piece of tomato. Pleasant position right on the esplanade overlooking the jetty & ocean.

This is a good place to eat while looking at the sunset. I loved the combination of nachos and beer, and the main dish of steak and fish(salmon and barramundi) was better than expected! Highly recommend …
