I had a horrible experience here and I was only here for 5 minutes. Regardless of how long I was here, I have a right to feel safe and secure and free of the threat of harm. I had my service dog with me who helps me with anxiety, a small dog only about 3/4 pounds. I was harassed by 2 white male staff to the point where one of them had a red face constantly screaming and the other one was extremely close to me swearing at me and both were very rude, yelling at me. The one close to me I was getting concerned he was gonna hit me. He was in my personal space 6 feet in height and I'm only 5'4 and a woman, latina. Maybe they treat nonwhite people this way. I was screamed at from the beginning and singled out in front of everyone and told in front of everyone to never come back again. I was already leaving and still the manager with the red face yelling at the top of his lungs and his employee who was swearing at me were following closely to me as I walked to the exit yelling " we're calling the police, get out and never come back again. " This was a very scary experience, emotionally traumatizing! There should definitely be staff training on anger management in this store. This store is not inclusive to people with service dogs that use them for emotional and mental health. After this experience, my dog seems like he's traumatized as much as I am. The manager has now given his staff the approval to be hostile towards shoppers. I will never bring my business there again considering I live right around the corner. I prefer to take my money elsewhere and you should to especially if you're not white or a person of colour.

Been going here since July of 2019. Parking is always available although a bit busy you really have to pay attention. The cleaned carts along with a greeter are always there to help out and keep things running safely and smooth . Once inside the clean store you'll find everything you need and a whole lot more along with friendly helpful staff. The store has a nice flow starting with fruits and veggies and continuing on to meats and poultry, grains and bread/bakery, bunkers of great deals on frozen seafood , bacon and appetizers. The isles are clearly numbered as is the food on a large signs making it easy to navigate down to an impressive international isle followed by toiletries frozen meals and much more and ending at a sizeable dairy and cheese isle . Let's not forget everything else that's been properly placed throughout the isles in keeping with the flow of the store . From dairy your shopping experience is almost over and then your hit with all kinds of interesting foods you may have forgotten, well played , and then just like that your in one of 7 maintained lines and out the door in 15minutes. You'll probably run into the manager while you shop as he likes to speak directly to his customers to get a realistic feel and sense of a job well done . His leadership is very apparent when speaking with staff members they know where everything is and will often drop what they are doing to help you get what you need. That's called service and what a great shopping experience in these troubled times . 5 star for sure

After visiting Food Basics, I noticed poor practice of the Covid-19 protocols by store employees. Upon approaching their store, the woman who was to ask if people had specific symptoms and count the customers entering was not actively doing so and was wearing her mask below her nose. While in the store, employees were reaching over customers to stock shelves while we were getting our products. At the check out, they only had three lanes open and two lanes were side by side. One employee was ending her shift wearing a mask only on her chin. When they were doing the shift change, another employee not wearing a mask, (assumed to be exempted, store manger claimed to have 3 employees excepted) however, while changing positions, they did not maintain the 6 foot protocol by having one wait at the end of the conveyor belt until the other had existed the station. On top of this, they also are allowing multiple people to purchase items at the same lane, while others (including myself) were bagging my groceries. In total, they allowed 5 people through the lane, to pass around pass us while bagging items and one was employee (the same one mentioned early at cash wearing her mask under her nose). Very disappointed in this store's lack of compliance. In the past they took decent care of their costumers however it seems now they are choosing to be very lacking in how they run their store's Covid-19 protocol. I hope this is dealt with so we can continue lowing the probability of another outbreak.

I went in to buy water and its like no one there can do math. My total came to $11.52 and I gave the cashier $21.50 and somehow she only gave me $7 back? I stayed there and told her that she owed me $10 and kept saying no and arguing with me. The manager came buy and he then told the cashier to only give me $1.50 back when it should have been $3. I get that it's only $1.50, but that still $1.50 that can go a long way in this current economy. Especially when employment is hard to come by and pennies can keep a roof over your head or evict you. Not cool Food Basics. I will NOT be coming back.

Good prices, selection, friendly staff...however you will NEVER find a basket to do your shopping (...and I mean ever). The onus is on the customer to hunt around at every cash register for discarded baskets in order to do their shopping...I have not found a basket in a convenient customer area in at least a year. Shopping carts only require a quarter to unlock, however it's difficult to find quarters these carts will accept. I'll sometimes go through a handful of change trying to get the locking chains off the cart. If you find a quarter that works, guard it with your life!

This store used to be an A&P store more than 40 years ago changed to a Food Basics store about 25-30 years ago in 1995 then Metro bought this store and the A&P chain about 20 years ago in 2005 There are usually good to great sales here but like any store you have to shop around and know your prices. I shop there frequently but I am a little farther away recently. They have less of certain bakery and no drug store compared to the Upper James Food Basics at Mohawk. There is more variety of international products here but no beer store compared to upper James.

Are they always rude to nonwhite people? I came to visit my aunt from Toronto and I went to the store. I purchased some groceries. But mistakenly put wrong code for bananas and I wanted to remove and add it again. The casher came and directly asked me “ what did you remove?” Really, what was that? And I saw she was saying good bye to every white customers but she totally ignored us. Girl I work in retail too I never seen anyone discriminating customers based on their race in my store. Ill never go to this store again

This food basics is just a few minute drive from me, however, I think it’s about time I make the drive to a further location as it smells SO BAD in there. The entrance is where the smell is the worst, however the smell doesn’t go away no matter how far into the store you get. I don’t know if it’s just dirty or if there’s another reason for it but I feel for the employees. We’ve always loved them, but I don’t know how they handle the smell day in and day out.

RUDE staff. i had an uber eats order and they LIED and told me an item was in stock BEFORE i placed the order come to find out the uber delivery guy told me it wasnt instock and i told them to ask staff staff said it wasnt. then they said they will check the back. still nothing. then i called and asked why they lied to me they said i asked for a different item?! how PATHETIC !! then they MIRACLELOUSLY found the item i was looking for!! Prices are good, nothing fancy. Fruit is sometimes a miss, I've gotten bags of apples which were all bruised when I brought them home so wasted $5. Cashiers are usually really friendly, one lady wears a Christmas shirt every time I'm in, she's sweet and helpful. The man at the cash near the lotto, he was rude once to my husband and they exchanged words but we just steer clear of him when we're in

  • Chaeryeong

i love kathy, she was so nice she deserves a raise and handled my issue in less than one singular minute unlike the other food basics who doesnt pick up the grocery line. Kathy deserves deserves the world, she deserves it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I literally am so sasitfied by that phone call. 10/10 that I wanna move into food basics with Kathy love you kathy goodbye!!!! <3<# xoxoxoxo

The Staff are so mean and they don’t help. I asked for help with the self checkout, she rudely just pushed the fruits around. I wanted to ask for more help but she never looked back and left us there. The other day one of them spoke to us rudely and was like “don’t you hear they just announced that we can’t take debits”. This treatment is especially towards Hijabies.

There’s one cashier who is totally awesome and has been there for like a decade. The produce however is typically soft, nearly rotten. Can’t ever dream of getting berries. Most melons and cucumbers are soft and nearly turned. Place is great for pantry and frozen goods and at a good price but get your fresh stuff and meats elsewhere.

  • Erin McNeil

It's a fine store. I started going there because it was closest to where I live, but I keep going there because they mostly have what I want, and the prices are good. If I want exceptional fresh food, like meat or produce, I might go elsewhere for that. But the store is great for maintaining the basics (no pun intended).

  • Jenny Majic-Carter

Great selection and prices. Food Basic is much better than Walmart, better stocked shelves, and nicer fresh produce. The staff are friendly. Store has good checkout. You have to pack your own groceries. Bring your own bags. They always have nice seasonal plants outside, esp for the holidays that are reasonably priced.

  • mathew dingman

It's a grocery store possibly the oddest place on the planet. humans from all walks of earth come to a place like this to shop for basic needs or art supplies depending on youre personality, each one different but also the same ... idk they have groceries here so it thats what you're looking for go here

  • Sharon Swindells

Food Basic is just what it says - basic. Sale items are very good value if it's the brand you want. Brand choice is limited so it's not always my "go to" grocery store. Their rotisserie chickens are sparrow-sized ! This is one of the better FB stores and checkout lines are generally well-staffed.

  • Dinner Dog

It’s too bad, when I moved to the area 8 years ago this was the best grocery store area. Now, with the lack of cashiers, items being sold past the expiration dates and atrocious meat quality/price and below average fruit and vegetable quality makes it easily the worst grocery store in the area.

  • Dick Guzinya

They should change the name of this store to Bait and Switch's Food Basics. If it's on sale and it's popular, it's sold out. If you get a rain check, have fun going back ten times and then giving up. If you do go, use the flyer to find out what they don't have in stock. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.

  • Lynda Danahy [Staff]

I really like this neighbourhood store for deals on dairy, packaged meats, canned goods and snacks. Most produce is fresh and priced to compete. I do buy most meat elsewhere. Irresistable Brand uncured bacon is excellent. Also best price for ground turkey and chicken more often than not.

  • The Ainzlee

Very organized supermarket. Once you enter, you're able to get your vegetables and from there it's pretty much a straightforward walkthrough with the cashier being the end results. Tip: The foods of the world section is a must visit so many good things there.

  • John Woll

Have had fruit flies for the last 2 months only because they came in the house after buying fruit from this location. Absolutely disgusting to find out that you baught rotten fruit despite paying more for food while at the same time getting less.

  • Deban Brunette

Social distancing not great as the aisles are narrow. Keeping track on #'s, there was a wait of 10 minutes outside. Opened up 2 cash registers while there, so short wait to check out. The one at Upper James is more spacious, but usually busier.

  • Marcello S

It's a fine place but I don't really need creepy bearded guy hoovering over me when trying to cash out. Don't worry, I'm not trying to steal anything. If I see him again, will just go to the cash line. Who needs the aggravation.

  • sud

Nice place, but some cashier can scam you, I bought 10% cream twice both time in offer for 1.99$ he charged me full price. Also parlour ice cream charged me full price instead of discounted price. My favourite place not anymore

  • Fongo Forgo

Buying meat from this store is like buying rotten eggs. I bought two beef meat chunk plates and both were rotten once opened despite of them being new shelved. You better fix your refrigerators instead of selling rotten meat!

  • Cassandra Cole Schouten

Our go-to grocery store has everything we need but they don't carry beer or wine at this location. They recently renovated to add a self checkout and it's looking good and speeding up the checkout process.

  • Helen Melanson

I had the most pleasant experience with your cashier ,Jesse, today. She was so lovely, smiling and being happy and responsive. I think she deserves $10 extra an hour rather than the $2 she is getting.

  • Manfred K

Nice clean store with friendly staff. Good selection of fruits and vegetables. Vegan food is also available. Prices are good with sales on various products throughout the store.

  • Bas Dawod

Good place for quick shopping when Costco isn't the open or if we need sth quick. Like the nane says, basic food, so don't expect to find everything.

  • adam Plus

Nice new self checkout registers. Good prices. Produce could be alot better. Something is usually moldy or has bugs on it: Raspberries, broccoli.

  • Tony Huisman

The entire place smells like cat pee. The place needs to be shutdown for a few days and deepcleaned, the smell is so strong

  • Dea Hanlon

I have lived by this store for years now and every single time I go in it absolutely smells disgusting. It’s repulsive.

  • Malcolm Purdy

Nice store. Fairly busy. Larger selection of products than some stores. Access easy to rest of mall.

  • dharmashree iyengar

My favorite store to buy fruits, veggies and groceries Great prices and quality

  • Lynn Davidson
