This store is clean and well-organized, quiet and well-stocked. There are all kinds of books for kids, teens and adults organized by genre, including "nostalgia" for historical books and even decorative spine books. I saw sections for self help, teacher curriculum, fitness and humor and more in addition to the standard fiction and non-fiction genres. They have a section for new release books as well. The store also has tons of records, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, games and of course a counter to sell your books. I haven't sold any at this location, but I do know that (when selling items to HPB) they give you the best deal they can based on the availability and demand of your items and the projected sale price. The cashier told me before ringing me up that they do not have plastic bags, which I really appreciated (eco-friendly!). I had a bunch of books and they let me take the shopping cart out to my car to load up. Be sure to compare the prices you see in-store to those online. Occasionally you'll get a better deal on Amazon. I'll definitely visit again!

I went in 3/23/2016 I sold 8 books I got 5$ not upset about that condition demand etc I'm cool with 5$. Although in the store I found a book for 4.99 plus fir selling your books you get 10% off store wide. I'm thinking sweet I'm not even gonna have to pay for the book. The cashier tells me I owe 4.89 I say ok cool apply my 5$ from selling my books he tells me he already did and that I have to pay tax. I'm like tax isn't 99% tax will be .37 cents. Meanwhile the manager is listing to this conversation and doesn't do any thing! Technically if I would have bought the book they would have only owed me .2 cents. I wouldn't reccomend going to this store their service is basically fraudulent. And they obviously don't care about customer satisfaction. If I could I would give the 0 stars.

Used to be a great place for a cheap read or two or three or four. Not anymore. They are rai$ing their price$ and it's not such a great deal anymore. Better pricing @ the HFB on Broadway. If you plan to "sell" or trade books at HFP - consider donating them to charity or giving them away - or you can pull a Fahrenheit 451 and just burn them or use them for fireplace kindling. You'll get a few pennies for each book - literally! [Umm. . . no pun intended] I miss those used bookstores like The Book Worm back in the 70s and 80s where you could trade a book or two for another book or two. Better just to get a Nook or Kindle or pad and download books for free off of the Z Library or go to the Dark Web. Actual hard copy books are fast becoming obsolete anyway.

- GREAT bookstore. Poor service ONLY interaction with the gentleman with long hair was to police mask me because the mask moved a little by my nose.. Barely 3 customers in the whole store. As in, no one close to me. The lady at the register said no 1 word to me. No thank you, no hope you found everything ok. Nothing. Just scanned, packaged and handed me the bags. And I spend $80. When I walked out both staff member were close, the mask police and the uninterested lady. No one said thank you, see you soon.. no words. If the owner reads this, you have a great store but some of your staff absolutely have no interest in being there and makes the customers experience sour. FYI, we came September 8th 7-8 PM. You can check who was on the shift. Best of luck!

  • Leona Roberts

Came in store women behind counter Marianne Wong think she is God. I was wearing my mask and I have asthma and trouble breathing and wasn't all the way over my nose and she said I had to put all the way over the nose. Explain I have trouble breathing and my mouth is covered and bottom of nose and she said dont care if medical conditions put all the way over nose or leave store. Last time I checked this was free country and can't discriminate against someone that has medical problems. She was very rude about it.People are getting out of hand with thinking they can control everything. But taking used books from use is safe right. Only place I've ever gone to this whole pandemic and been treated so rudely. Socialism .

Avoid this store. Mask mandate at this store, saying that it’s a corporate policy. We were just in AZ at multiple locations without a mandate. Then called other stores in the area and they also do not have a mandate. Thinking that was weird, we called the store to ask why they would turn away high paying customers during this economic collapse, simply because we will not comply to a mask mandate that turns out to NOT be a corporate mandate. Terrible customer service at this store. Tried to talk to the manager about it but they were “out to lunch” conveniently, the shift leader then hung up on me in the middle of a conversation after trying to pass me off to a corporate help line.

The very little time I spent in here was the worst. I went in looking for newer vinyls. A present for my significant other so I was excited. I didn't know where to look and I had been in only once before so I asked the lady at the front. She pointed and looked at me like I was stupid. I asked again, if those were the new, modern day ones and yet again, I feel like an idiot for asking because she pi ts, this time shaking her ginger St me, and says "you don't see them, right there!" it was horrible. I immediately felt discouraged and took a quick glance and left. As I was walking out she was glaring at me the whole time. Needless to say I'll never go back there

Check your disc’s! At this location specifically (20821 US HWY 281) Especially if you’re buying a collection/set of any kind. I bought a Spider-Man 67 collection and the discs were starting to crack and bubble from the middle. They usually show you discs at the counter before your purchase (at least the one on 410 does) this one doesn’t, luckily I checked the set before I left the store. When I went to return the set the manager said they should still play and he was going to put them back on the shelf and on my receipt he put “changed mind”. Not the case. So if anyone buys a Spider-Man 67 set or anything from this location, inspect it before you buy.

Oohhhhhh man. Soooo many beautiful, beautiful books! This is a newer location and it is extremely clean and inviting. Large windows on the front of the building give wonderful natural light throughout the store. I would recommend visiting here before even checking for books online; the prices cannot be beat!! Be sure to fully browse the Clearance section along the back wall. You can also find fun, quirky gifts throughout the store. Also, the music selection, board games, and new release books are well-worth perusing. Staff it's very friendly and helpful. The store is well-stocked and well-organized. Two thumbs up! I will DEFINITELY be back.

As lifelong Half Price Books fans, my mom and I were very disappointed in our last visit to this location. My mom was moving and cleaning out, so we brought a large load of books to sell. While we were waiting, I overheard several inappropriate comments from the two employees assessing the books related to my mother’s age. These included sarcastic comments that were qualified by “Well I guess they’re appropriate for the year she was born in.” Please teach your employees to have more respect and regard for their customers and be aware that these customers can be sitting down waiting and overhear every word that they are saying.

  • Chi Loutman

I love half priced books. I usually find very helpful, book loving employees that are eager to help. NOT THIS LOCATION. The people that work here seem to hate their job and act very put out when you interrupt their cell phone activities to ask a question. I watched one employee berate a patron (who was wearing a mask) for "not PROPERLY wearing a mask". It seemed that was the only thing they were passionate about. They seemed more eager to exercise authority over patrons than help. Never again. Whoever manages this location. Get your act together, your employees are behaving horribly.

  • michael king

As Amazon gets bigger and bigger and their prices lower and lower, somehow I still find myself going to half price books at least a couple times a month. I love that they are so supportive of children reading, I remember their programs from when I was a kid, and it's great to see them still active. Check out different locations for different magazine prices and types, they change from time to time and some are more apt to have science and technology magazines. Generally speaking, the cheaper the surrounding housing, the cheaper the magazines.

  • Hector Elliot Flores

There was once a time when. I would buy all my book online or at Barnes and Noble but most of my reading needs are met here. B 'n' N still provides me with the newest titles however. But here is where I can buy 3 or 4 books and not break the bank. It's also great that though these are 2nd hand books, I know most book lovers take very good care of their books and are still in very good condition when received here. Also staff is pretty chill here and one is always available to guide you to your next literary destination.

  • Trenton Gold

We have been to this location on several locations. The store is big with lots of books in just about genre. This is a discount bookstore, but don't necessarily expect to see heavily discounted books. They also buy back books, if you are willing to part with them for very little $$ in return. The staff are friendly and generally helpful. I also learned that they donate books to school teachers upon request and sometimes persistent followup. I recommend you give them a try.

  • David Hickey

A little hard finding help sometimes but it's worth this "sometimes" inconvenience as the store has so much to offer and I most usually find what I'm looking for or come across something else that I want. I shop there often and recommend it to many. All locations are great places! One thing I really love is that when I call or ask, they will look in there computer and tell me if what I'm looking for is in their stock or if it can be found in another one of their locations.

  • Art Ful

Love HPB. But I could really do without the guy behind the counter making noises and faces because I almost forgot to put my basket away or asked my 3yr old granddaughter if she needed to use the restroom before we left. We had been there for quite some time shopping. Did most of my xmas shopping here. Had great deals and great selection. I could be here for hours! But I am seriously considering driving miles out of my way to go to the Huebner store instead.

  • Jose de la Fuente

Always a very good place to shop. Through all the years I've come here, all the staff have always been very friendly and willing to help, and when they were unsure about something they would always ask someone else who did. The prices are good, and even new products are 20% off, as well as having a very large selection and often having good sales (such as a recent 50% off any item sale). Overall, I'd definitely recommend it

  • Natalie Gillmore

My mom and I took a couple of books to half price, they were in good condition. The employees went through the books and said they are in " bad" condition and they would buy the books for 5 cents each,my mom and I were furious because they cheated me and my mom, and we needed the money, they are losing customers because of that.So my mom and I took the books to a pawn and sold the books for 15 dollars.

  • Catherine Davis

I go here way too much because of their DVD section which is Better than others in this city and it’s close to my home. I love browsing through the kids book section for my young daughter also. I love the fact that you can always sell things here and can get such a variety of genres to choose from in both movies and books. Always quick and friendly at the checkout!

  • J Lee

Face masks are REQUIRED to shop in the store and the workers are face mask nazis. I have not been required to wear a mask in San Antonio in the past 12 months except for here. I will not be supporting a store that puts in place policies that have shown zero evidence of working. For people around books all the time, they’re not very bright on how to run a business.

  • Victoria Martinez

Half Price Books is a great place for books, vinyl records, dvds, calendars, and so much more. Each location buys in materials from people in the area so there is something different at each store. The staff is nice and helpful and you can tell they really love what they do. The stores are well lit and organized and have most anything you could want in stock.

  • Eva

It was our first time selling our old books they were super friendly and straight to the point, pricing was reasonable since they also need to make money out of it. It's very clean and organized definitely prefer them over Barns and Nobles. Just went to sell but ended up buying a book they have amazing options its so hard to not buy 8 at a time and go broke

  • Brad Jackson

Its hard to go wrong with Half Price books. This location is in a richer part of town and is bigger than most Half Price Book stores, but still has nice deals on books. There is a somewhat larger than normal collection of new booms, calendars, board games, and suchlike. But since the store is on the larger side that doesn't cut into space for used books.

  • Josh Ramseur

Easy to work with, stock can be pretty limited at times, but that often is just because of the demographic. Some treasures here for sure, often in the poetry and drama sections. Always available to help in a very polite way, called today to check if some books were in stock and Vanessa searched and secured them for me, quickly and kindly. Thanks again!

  • Trish Bailey

Good place to get books at a more reasonable price. I do wish they'd pay more for books that are brought in. I get needing to turn a profit, but when someone brings in valuable books and they offer less than a dollar it just feels like a major rip off-especially when you see them on sale for at least $20 after that. Just doesn't seem right.

  • Emily Wycpalek

SUPER staff helpful and always come over and help you find things. It is like they read minds. The selection is great but if you need something is not in stock they are quick to look it up and find a copy. They can have stuff shipped. They are great. It is better than amazon because there is someone to answer your questions too..

  • CJ Smasal

This place is clean and has a friendly atmosphere. As the employees are very nice and kind. It is always fully stocked with all kinds of treasures for you to find. They have all kinds of books, cds, dvds, 33-records, 45-records, vhs, cassettes, comics and more. Also there is alot of parking and even handicap parking.

  • Isaac Medina

Like most half price locations this one had a nice selection of different items. Of course some similar. Staff is always nice and friendly. Only bad thing this was first location I bought blu ray and had to replace it 3 times at front desk cuz it was cracking. Never knew they sold DVDs with cracks :/

  • Annie Guajardo

My daughter remembered on a Sunday afternoon that she needed a book for school on Monday. She called Half Price books and aak for the book , they kept the book on hold, we drove, picked it up and came back home. It was a great and fast service , definitely we will comeback for more books. Thank you

  • Kim Cruz

Clean and very organized. There is a great selection of children's books and activities/games. My girls enjoy participating in the summer reading program and getting a $5 credit for reading 300 minutes. There's also a great selection of inexpensive and cute greeting cards near the check out area.

  • TACPness

Easily one of the best book stores ever! You can find new books as well as a ton of used ones in fantastic condition. Used books are awesome and some of the most pristine books in my collection, not to mention hard to find, I have found through Half Price Books! Bar none my favorite book store!

  • Kaige Gonia

Large selection of relatively cheap books, however everyone who works here seems to be so incredibly done with the booking of books that they don't care to answer questions regarding where a book is, or whether or not they even have it. 5 stars for the store. -1 for the employees.

  • Deb B

Love this book store, many items brand new! Calenders, greeting cards, excellent children's section including yours, puzzles, stuffed animals. Used CDs in good condition, great prices. Fair offers on recycled books. Will even shop to you from another store, minimal shipping.

  • Alex Kirkwood

Half Price Books at Stone Ridge provided me with the resources that I needed, answered all my questions/ concerns & Jeff went above and beyond to help a soon to be graduate student out that most employees would not put forth that type of customer care. Thumbs up Jeff …

  • Walter Davis

Wouldn't let me in the store without a mask. Absolute nazis enforcing something that has zero proof of working. I've spent untold money with them and it's my favorite store. Won't go back unless they lift the requirement. People have to stop living in unnecessary fear.

  • Cemetery Sinner

Love these stores!! Not only cheap but in good condition to boot! Found almost the entire set of Forgotten Realms books to send to my daughter as I named her after the main character...could not have been more ecstatic and she now has them happily in her possession!

  • Joseph Banks

Terrible customer service. Went in to buy a few books with my HPB teacher card (10% discount for teachers). Apparently it expired the previous month and they wouldn’t honor it because I didn’t bring any teacher ID with me. The management of this store is terrible.

  • Casey Carr

Good selection over all and prices are decent. Got an almost full anime set for a little over half of what I saw online. Kids and husband all found items they wanted. Aside from books there are small amounts of toys, games, novelty items and arts and craft sets.

  • Ryan And Tiff

Half price is a great chain, this store is kept quite nice even among other stores. The only thing holding this store back is a large Liberal leaning in displays. Play both sides of the fence or dont play politics. You are in Texas, its not rocket science.

  • Candice Pink

I love to read so this is an awesome place to go! I love the magazines that are super cheap and the books aren't so expensive. I would get books for free from the library but I take forever to read so I don't have to worry about returning them this way.

  • Kenpachi Ramasama

Honestly went in trying to find Zoo Tycoon Complete Edition from the early 2000s, didn't find it. However the atmosphere is the same as any other day, and I found quite a few lovely TTRPG rulebooks and supplemental books. Excited, and thankful.

  • Christy McKee

Always love coming here. I haven't bought anything from here but I have sold here. I got a pretty good price for the stuff I was selling. I have always gone in the morning because there isn't anyone in line to sell or if there is not very many

  • Michael McPherson

HPB is a favorite of friends and family for decades. This trip was a road trip me and a buddy took to see out of town bookstores and comic shops. This was the site both of us found treasures at. A wide variety of good finds of a varied sort.

  • Y_K Parker

Extra happy visit to HPB on 11/24/2018! Staff always so helpful in directing us to what we are searching. They also checked computer and said "Keto" is so popular the books sell out quickly! Good for them! Also, met award-winning author Jim

  • Angelena Lee

I found this highly rated store online today. I called to confirm they purchased DVDs and their business hours. I brought in 80+ DVDs into the store a little before 5 pm. I was told to place the box on the floor infront of the counter,

  • Andrew Mahan

I love the fact that they have excellent prices on books, as well as a great selection. The staff are always willing to help, even when they are busy. I have called several times and the employees have never minded looking up multiple

  • Darcy Boggs

This is such a great place to find your next read! I'm a bibliophile so I can never have enough books! At the discounted rates you can find them here I can afford to get several and not break the bank. That is definitely a win for me!

  • Nathan Strange

The reason why I gave it only two stars is because I took in seven educational books value of total over $300 and I only got $15.02 so yeah that is pretty shity. So I don't think I'm going to sell any books or anything to them again.

  • Dave Vanian

The RUDEST MANAGER I have ever had the misfortune to talk to on the phone. He acted like I was a giant pain because I wanted to purchase something. What a joke. He sounded like the comic book guy from the simpsons. AVOID this store.

  • Jason

I love the religious book section and also they allow concealed carry unlike some of the other stores the do not. I never open carry because it can in some stores be a sign of disrespect. Thanks for allowing us to protect ourselves.

  • Denise OToole

I would NOT recommend selling your books here!!! I got $18 for about 20 books, many of them hard covers and most of them pretty curren, including a Liane Moriarity! I will seek out an independently owned used book store next time!

  • Daniel Glaser

Excellent service by staff. When I walked in, the cashier directed me to the right section of the store. He also checked my books and I was able to use a tax deduction for the books purchased for our non profit organization.

  • MrChadstthomas

An average run of the mill Half Price with all the things you'd expect. Had a slimmer than usual vinyl section than I'm used to but I could see it was a smaller location. The staff is also young but it's also really nice.

  • Alyssa Elaine

Every half price book store gets 5 stars from me. I haven't been disappointed yet! At this one, I found the only Jim Morrison/The Doors CD that I didn't own! Also a Motley Crue CD that had all my favorite songs by them!

  • Randy Scott

Only wanted to give $00.28 for all the books I brought in. Gave all to the Salvation Army instead.. nice clean store and had a lot of nice books for sale, but for 28 cents felt like they could have tried a little harder

  • el mago

As usual, great selection. My only complaint today was that I picked up a couple really tattered books that either should be donated to Goodwill or marked down much, much more. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly

  • Andrea Gallier

It would be nice if they would give you some sort of estimate on how long it’s going to take or at least tell you that the people ahead of you brought giant boxes of books when you only brought like 5. Waste of time.

  • Leo Lopez

Had a good experience, someone must have sold some of his library, found some excellent books ( religious books) calvinistic in nature, the drive was worth it. The only problem was I forgot my coupon ☹ shame on me...

  • Ethan Roberts

Possibly the best selection of any HPB in the San Antonio area. Prices for books are splendid. But with music/other media it is a hit or a miss. But it is a great place to just browse and maybe pick up a few things.

  • Josh Vela

Good selection of comics but a lot of them aren't in sleeves & the price sticker is directly on the comic. Idk bout y'all but having a sleeve is nice just in case & I pull off all the price tags but that's just me.

  • Samuel Temple

Very well organized and well managed for social distancing. Relatively low visible staffing, but adequate for the number of patrons in store. Definitely am comfortable shopping there in it's current state/capacity.

  • Gerardo Almaraz

HPB is one of my favorite places to go to for books, music, movies, gifts and so much more! Affordable and such a variety of things here. Walked out today with a few items. Staff were very welcoming and helpful!

  • Diana Cantu

I like going to Half Price Books it's convenient and not expensive. I normally find what I'm looking for. The service has always been extremely helpful, polite and knowledgeable. All in all I like this store.

  • Michael Stephens

I’m a fan of HPB but very disappointed to hear you are still requiring masks to shop. Please reconsider allowing your patrons freedom of choice as it pertains to masking now the vaccine is widely available.

  • Bert Ng

Knowledgeable staff, friendly and helpful. I always enjoy visiting this location for Half Price Books. I hope they stay at this location because I always find rare gems here that are not at other locations.

  • Joaquin Olivera de la Vega

Simple and good store layout, has a good selection of books. When I went I was not able to find what I needed, but I did find some awesome books that I will definitely read. All in all a great Half Price.

  • derrick kraft

Nice staff and well stocked and organized store, but don't expect much for books you're selling... it's really a joke. Less than $4 for about a dozen books about half of which were really nice hardbacks

  • Lorena Holguin

So many books! Loved it. Children's books were a little to high priced, but I found some I've never found before, and was shocked to see some of my old copies are considered special addition antique.

  • Emily Stafford

Neat place, first time I’d ever been in. Excellent collection of books and vinyls, can’t wait to come back to explore more. Less than impressed with the customer service though, which was a bummer.

  • Blake McMullin

Great location and friendly service. As with many used bookstores, sometimes that book you're looking for isn't exactly where you'd expect to find it, but it's a great atmosphere for perusing.

  • Christie Bartkowski

Horrible experience with them trying to “require” face masks. Staff is very rude and aggressive. It’s funny, since used books are covered in germs and diseases. Ignorance really must be bliss.

  • Shane Saunders

Great place for books, but I noticed they have a lot of liberal, democrat books that are brand new... I guess to many were printed so they are already getting sold for a discounted price. Lol

  • Gabrielle Ortega

One of my happy places! This company loves teachers and has contributed to my classroom library generously. They've inspired reading for so many and always have a wide selection of titles.

  • JDZ

First time at this location, nice store and they have more of what me and my kids enjoy compared to other locations. It's pretty far from where I live but it's worth the drive …

  • Marie Danysh

As with all the locations I've been to, the book selection is great. It's well lit with chairs placed near the sections so you can sit and read. They have cool novelty items as well.

  • Lauren Doan

This HPB has a better selection than most I've been to on town. It's always bright, clean and easy to navigate. The staff is more than kind and an absolute pleasure to interact with.

  • krysten losoya

Great prices on a variety of books! Small sections on certain genres but they gave a great kid corner section. Also have great selection of movies and they habe some novelty items.

  • Hero BLOB

Always my go-to hpb, they've usually got a great selection with fast turnover. staff are helpful and the lines usually move fast. I've found some awesome dvds here over the years!!

  • Meghan O'Brien

Coming from Missouri I LOVED this place. Great selection and staff are knowledgeable on where to find anything. Great prices. Just don't buy too much to pack home if you are flying

  • Francisco Treviño

It was pretty nice. Somebody there started whistling The Super Mario theme song so I have to be part of this!! Pretty fun experience, and nice selection of albums in cd and vinyl.

  • Jenn Kruizenga

I love half price books. A great place to take your used or outgrown books. They pay you for them, then you can use your money towards something new. Always such nice employees!!

  • CP FF

All the San Antonio Half Price Books are great but this one has the best staff of all; and they have the 2nd biggest variety (1st on that department will be the downtown store).

  • Jason Deats

Great book store. The books are half-priced, which I had no way of guessing. So that was a nice surprise. And the clean restroom— another nice surprise. 10/10 recommend.

  • Mike A

Great used books store. It had a great local old school 90s vibe with friendly staff. They also have a CD and games collections to buy. Prices are fair and a good price.

  • Marcos Herrera

Staff is friendly. Generally good selection of books. I went looking for poetry books. Not a big selection of poetry but did leave with two Pablo Neruda collections

  • Eric Cooper

My wife and daughter enjoy coming here. Usually a good source of books for kids school projects. Good place to sell your used books also. Won't get much for them.

  • Jayleen Lann

Nice clean store. Very well organized. Great prices. I was lucky to find all the books in a series. Books are in very good condition. Staff was very friendly.

  • Paul Barham

Friendly staff. Your not likely to make much off selling your books and stuff, but it is a good way to recycle. Always find a read of interest when I go in.

  • David Fasman

Half Price Books is always awesome. Good selection of a variety of used books for great prices. The cheap used vinyl is a plus too. I'll definitely be back.

  • Ray Tincher

Great Half Price Books location. You can easily buy and sell used books here. Great selection from well known authors. You'll find some great deals here!

  • Miranda P.

Great selection of books, movies, laserdiscs, LPs, and other types of media at discounted prices. I can almost always find a gem in the $1 LP section!

  • Daphne Campanelli

I love in New York, but whenever I visit Texas, this little gem is one of my first stops. Staff extremely helpful and polite. Love Half Price Books!

  • Teri Higley

The service is exceptional and well knowledged. With a wide selection of comics , vinyls and some unusual finds. Very good selection of literature.

  • Lucy Duncan

First time to Half Price Bookstore since March and COVID-19. Sold some books. And spent $45! Love this chain of used books and more items.

  • James Verschoyle

I went in, sold my books, found one I've been looking for and got out. Very quick with very friendly staff. WEAR YOUR MASK PLEASE!!!!

  • Nichole Byron

Decent selection of books but rude and unwelcoming staff. My suggestion would be to choose a different location over this one.

  • Ari Cauri

Cashier's are always super friendly. Great selection of hardback classics. This location and the Huebner location are great.

  • Bea ThaTruth

Got some cute stuff for the kids and when I say this place has all the throwback books I'm talking ALL THE THROWBACK BOOKS.

  • Josh Gibson

Wish they were open later on Saturday, they close at 6pm. Otherwise, it’s awesome. Also they price used CDs pretty well.

  • Alexander Fowlkes

Great selection and one of the most wonderful outside appearances found among all of the midwest's Half Price locations!
