On a beautiful Columbus Day( or National Indigenous Day) afternoon, my family and I decided to take a stroll through Hermann Park, one of Houston's most beloved green spaces. The weather was cool and comfortable, perfect for a leisurely walk. As we entered the park, we were immediately struck by the lush greenery and vibrant colors of the fall foliage. The trees were ablaze with oranges, reds, and yellows, and the air was filled with the sweet scent of flowers. We wandered aimlessly through the park, taking in all the sights and sounds. We passed by families picnicking on the grass, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and children playing on the playground. We also saw a variety of wildlife, including squirrels, birds, and even a family of ducks swimming in the pond. We continued our stroll, and soon we came to the Japanese Garden. This serene garden is a popular spot for visitors of all ages. We spent some time wandering through the winding paths, admiring the koi fish swimming in the ponds, and enjoying the tranquil atmosphere. After leaving the Japanese Garden, we headed to the Miller Outdoor Theatre. This outdoor amphitheater hosts a variety of performances throughout the year, including concerts, plays, and dance recitals. After a while, we decided it was time to head home. We had spent a wonderful afternoon exploring Hermann Park and enjoying the beautiful weather. We can't wait to go back again soon! Glad to have brought my family and had a great time at Hermann Park. It's a beautiful place to visit, especially in the fall. I'm sure anyone will make many happy memories there in the years to come.

My wife and I were just in town and looking for something to do. We heard about Hermann Park, so we decided to check it out. Even though there are several parking lots, parking was difficult. We had to cruise around for a few minutes before finally getting a spot in Parking Lot G, just outside the entrance to the Houston Zoo. Parking was free though in this lot, which was a plus. We were amazed by how huge the park is! It's over 400 acres, so there's plenty to see and do. Upon visiting it, I wasn't surprised to learn the park is one of the largest urban parks in the United States. We only came to the park to kill a little time, so we didn't opt to go to the zoo. We mostly just walked around McGovern Lake. It was very hot, but there were some shady spots while walking around. The lake was very beautiful, and my wife loved the odd-looking ducks and turtles. While walking around the lake, we passed by the Pioneer Memorial Obelisk, which was very beautiful. It's a 90-foot obelisk dedicated to the pioneers who settled in Houston. We also saw the Japanese Garden, which is a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. The plants, trees, and lush gardens at the Japanese Garden were gorgeous. We were only at the park for an hour, but it was still a beautiful and enjoyable experience. We would advise coming early in the day, especially in the summer as the park seems to get really busy, but we definitely recommend Hermann Park to anyone looking for a place to relax and escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Houston has so many great parks, and this is definitely one I would consider in the top 3 (the other two being Memorial Park and Buffalo Bayou Park). It's hard for me to choose which is number one, because each of these massive public spaces has a lot of pros and few cons. For Hermann Park, the pros include TONS of walking paths, special features (Japanese Garden, Miller Outdoor Theatre, Houston Zoo, McGovern Centennial Gardens, pedal boats & park railroad, Hermann Park Golf Course and all the museums - not to mention Rice University) and proximity to great restaurants (Museum District, Montrose and West U/Rice Village) and the Med Center. The biggest con is definitely parking and traffic around the park. Finding a place to park on a busy beautiful weekend day or holiday break is definitely a challenge! But, with some patience and a sharp lookout, you can find FREE parking around the park, or you can choose to pay for parking in one of the many public parking lots/garages. Bring the kids, bring the dogs, bring a picnic and some lawn games and make a day of it. Sometimes you can find some food trucks across the street from the park at the gorgeous gardens in McGovern Centennial Gardens if you don't bring your own baskets. If you haven't been yet, make it a priority and visit this historic and beautifully maintained urban park in the heart of the Museum District and Medical Center.

This has to be one of the best parks in Houston I have visited many times. There's so much to do and see in this park that each time I visit it i discover something new. There are wild animals like ducks and squirrels you can admire and gaze at. This perk has a reflective pool just like in Washington DC which is amazing and looks beautiful. It also has a Japanese garden which is super cute and quaint. It also has a mini train for the children to ride and it goes all around the park. It also has picnic tables to enjoy with the family or friends you go with that day. The restrooms are super clean and well maintained which is something all the parks in Houston should have at least. The nature is beautiful and everyone in Houston has to come at least once and enjoy this park.
Restrooms
This park has actually restrooms and not porta potties. Nice and clean and well maintained
Dog-friendliness
Perfect park to have your dog enjoy themselves and nature.

Absolutely beautiful! Hermann Park is a treasure full of gorgeous, lush, extremely old trees, green space, water fountains, and picnic tables hidden right in the middle of this busy city. It's located within walking distance of the medical center, the museum district, the zoo, Miller Outdoor Theater, and it's not far from downtown. This is a perfect place to go for a walk, jog, take a date, propose, sightsee, have a picnic, walk your dog, offer a smile and a "hello" to a stranger, or sit and people watch on one of the many benches available throughout this park. I'm amazed that such a tranquil and beautiful space is surrounded on all sides by traffic, buildings, helicopters, and the hustle and bustle of the fourth largest city in the United States, yet offers a way to get away from all of the busyness to just be still.

I can’t believe I’m just finding out about the train!!! I loved in Houston s couple years and I moved to Austin early this year. I didn’t have a great experience in Houston. A very chaotic city for my taste. But I really did enjoy going to the Different parks. Herman park was one of my favorites. And was so nice and peaceful. I really loved the trees and benches along the trail. The fountain view. But I never knew about the train!! I can’t believe I missed it! If I ever go back to Houston I’ll definitely be going back to this park.. just for the train!!
Playground
Lots of options for the kiddos
Restrooms
I didn’t see them but sure there must be some
Dog-friendliness
Nice park to go on a walk with your dog
Picnic area
Nice quiet pic nice areas

  • Joseph Keller

I really REALLY loved this park! Spacious and lovely with plenty of facilities. Good private spaces as well as photo ops especially in the Japanese garden that section closes before the rest of the park though so if you want to check it out you'll need to get there before 6 which is when they close. However because it's in the museum district I recommend going on a weekday as parking is a nightmare on Sat/Sun. Anything close by is going to be hard to find before 6. But after that there's usually some space near the zoo. Fortunately they are open pretty late, 11 I think it is, it's also well lit and tended.
Restrooms
Very clean and plenty of them especially and the outdoor theater near the center of the park which has 10-15 stalls as well as 20 or so urinals

  • J CD

It was great. The park was well maintained, very clean, and had awesome walking paths. I specifically went to the Japanese gardens, However, there are many pools and fountains throughout the park. As I walked through the park, many shared my opinion as they used it as a place to recharge by having picnics and just chilling with their kids. There is also the option of using little pedal drive boats to sail around the lake there.
Playground
There is an awsome play area with water geysers at four sections of the park which kids love to play in.
Restrooms
Restrooms are at the entrance of the Japanese gardens.
Dog-friendliness
Dogs are allowed throughout the park.

I lived in Houston for a few years, but never came to Hermann Park. Decided to come out at 7a on a Sunday morning shortly after sunrise to see the animals start their day. It was early, so there was not many people in the park and it was very quiet. There's many different paths throughout the park with animals, nature, and water everywhere you look. It was a great place to go for a walk and take pictures. The paths are wide and plenty of room for the pedestrians and animals. Other features in the park include the Japanese Garden, Centennial Garden, paddle boats, train ride, and the Zoo. Nice place to relax, enjoy the scenery, and view the animals.

  • Gregory Watson

This is a wonderful park with a ton of different offerings. The park has a large walking/biking trail that covers about 3.3 km and is located next to a golf course. Another section of the park has a walking trails adjacent to a small lake. It is a great place for families and an excellent place to see different types of birds. The Japanese garden and botanical garden are both free to visit and have a lot of beautiful scenery. Finally, the park has a large outdoor theater with free concerts that take place during the summer.

  • SHAH JAFFAR™

Is a true urban oasis. The park's vast green spaces, scenic trails, and serene lake make it a perfect escape from the bustling city. The well-maintained gardens and beautiful Hermann Park Conservancy add to the charm. Whether you're taking a leisurely stroll, enjoying a picnic, or exploring the various attractions like the Japanese Garden, there's something for everyone. It's a welcoming haven for nature lovers and a testament to Houston's commitment to providing a relaxing and enjoyable outdoor space for the community."

  • Katlynn Nguyen

Beautiful park with plenty of family activities and solo activities to do!! There is the zoo, Japanese garden, butterfly center, and cafe around this area. It gets pretty busy on a weekend morning due to families coming in for the zoo. If you are just visiting for the park attractions I recommend seeking parking closer to the outskirts of the park and leaving zoo traffic run it’s course towards the middle of the park. Included some photos of the reflection pool, ponds, and Japanese garden

  • Joseph Durden

Huge park... I walked around most of it. Went through the Japanese garden. It was nice. There was a big reflection pool with a pond at the end or it to rent pedal boats. I didn't go there although I saw it. Also there is a child's train that goes along the outer perimeter that I'm not sure where to buy the tickets for. Plus it's next to the museum of natural science. So plan it right and kill two things same day.
Dog-friendliness
Not a "dog park" that I saw. But leashed are welcome

  • Wi Sebi

Great public park, surrounded by museums and restaurants and hosting a museum and the Miller outdoor theatre. Lots of playgrounds, walkable lawns, formal gardens, trails for walking jogging and biking, big lake with hydro and boats, kids train, and plenty of parking spots.
Restrooms
Clean and accessible.
Dog-friendliness
Lots of walking paths for dogs and a doggie park.
Picnic area
Spread around, but mostly in the Miller theatre area.

  • Juzar Mustan

This is a large park with gardens and a lake right in the middle of the city. The gardens are well curated and the park has several trails for joggers. There’s a nice 8-minute train ride around the park that children and adults alike will love. The lake hosts a few species of ducks and tortoises. The park also boasts an open-air theatre that hosts shows in the late evening. Overall a good place to hang out with nature and take some lovely photos.

  • Ale Urgelles

A true gem in the heart of Houston! With its vast expanse of green areas, the charming miniature train, and the splendid Japanese Garden, it offers a perfect respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. The nearby zoo and museum make it an ideal destination for families. Every visit leaves me with memorable memories and a renewed appreciation for urban natural spaces! Highly recommended for both locals and tourists alike.

  • Sue Miller

I love walking at the Memorial park. It is such a nice place to entertain yourself, look at the ducks, sit at the picnic table, go on paddle boat rides. Visit the Zoo. I like the view of the horse statue as you walk out of memorial Park.
Restrooms
While enjoying walking the park, they have bathrooms and it is very convenient.
Picnic area
When sitting at the picnic tables, you can see the view of the buildings.

  • Hung Thai

This huge public space is a gem! You can walk around the park, go to the zoo, take a scenic "train ride", or just sit and relax. We were lucky to find parking and had the park relatively to ourselves because the rain had just stopped. On Saturday we tried coming back before our flight and it was packed, so much so that we circled the parking lot and gave up after a while. I'd be here all the time too if I lived in Houston.

  • Bishwa, The world!

Herman Park’s always been a treasure full of ton of different offerings, moreover the tranquility of the place is the best part of it though it’s surrounded by the crowded city life!!
Playground
Wide and big! Clean and well maintained!!

Picnic area
Nice benches and tables on top of that the ground is clean underneath the big trees!!

  • Jada Cole

It had been a while since I had been to Hermann. But wow it is so beautiful now! They have added a little pond with a fountain where you can rent out their paddle boats. There are also lots of turtles to look at in the water. You can take a ride on the train, get a bite to eat at the cafe, have a picnic or whatever you choose. Extremely kid and family friendly place.

  • ShovelheadTed !

Walked around this park while waiting for the zoo lights to start up. I was very impressed with how active this park is and everything there is to look at. I would definitely recommend taking a walk through this park.
Restrooms
Restrooms are clean and well kept
Dog-friendliness
The whole park and any shops surrounding seemed dog friendly.

  • LT

Great atmosphere perfect day pictures and frisbees. Restrooms for well-maintained throughout the day. The train ran from 11 AM to 5:30 PM Japanese garden open from 11 AM to 5 PM. our family pitch the tent, we brought tables and chairs, barbecue pit and drinks for the kids. They were enough trash, cans to hold all our trash. No one bothered us at all.

  • Sam Pattnaik

Visited during a Friday and it was great, lot of features tie together like the fountain, the pavilion, outdoor theater, Japanese garden, etc. There are a lot of benches and trees with shades to picnic or sit and relax while watching the water fowl. Definitely a well developed park to visit while in Houston, lots of things to do or just walk around.

  • vinay jorra

This place is very nice. They have so many attractions for kids they have their food court and all required facilities. This place is so informative about the history, evolution of humans about dinosaurs and all sorts of animals, fishes. They also have a corner for Egyptian art and history.
Playground
Good place
Restrooms
Very clean

  • Riya Sinha

Fabulous park indeed. The monument looks like a small version of Washington monument. There is also a little stream by the monument just like in Washington D.C. There is a amphitheater too. The park is great vibes, lots of people and beautiful ponds. There are lots of ducks in the ponds, bridges, boats and so much more. Large golf area as well.

  • Jonathan Uribe

Hermann Park is such a cool place to hang out when the weather isn’t bad in Houston. There are lots of families and activities to do. We had some gelato, rode the train around the entire park, walked through the Japanese Garden and walked alongside the mirror pool. There are some nice statues and random things scattered around the park to see.

  • Stacy H

Took the train ride through the park. It was so fun it was all lit up with Christmas lights. Kids started singing Jingle Bells. We had a blast! The wait was super long though. One train was down so it took us 1.5 hrs to finally get on the train. I do not suggest waiting till the Zoo closes to go. Go before you go into the zoo.

  • Emanuel Rolon

I fell in love with this place. It’s big and it’s family and bike friendly. It feels safe. You can go with family and friends. Rent a bike nearby and enjoy the peaceful environment. The main entrance to the Japanese Garden is just nearby the fountain, also is the bike racks. Excellent place for photo shoots and selfies too.

  • Nelson Contreras

Tons to do within 2-3 mile radius.. great trail with tons of shade thanks to the abundance of trees in the area and always kept clean.the Houston zoo is a walk away and the miller outdoor theater always has great entertainment and is usually free!! Great area to ride around on e scooters as well!

You don't have to spend much money to have a good time. Bring some water or sodas and some snacks from home for your kids and enjoy the day. Only paid $13.00 for a 30 minutes boat ride ticket (4 people can ride). My kids enjoyed seeing the ducks, geese and some turtles too. We really enjoyed our last day of 2022 …

  • Chris Wineinger (chriswphoto)

Hermann Park is one of my go to location's to photograph clients photography needs. There's a variety of places to walk around, plenty of open spaces, cool backgrounds and nice oak trees!
Restrooms
there are restrooms on site for changes as well!
Dog-friendliness
bring your dog along for the scenery!

  • James Wilcox

We mainly visited for the Japanese garden, we heard great things and found it to be incredibly disappointing. The squirrels were a great novelty, but perhaps not the primary focus of a Japanese garden. The paddle boats look like they'd be fun in the summer, the zoo is there at an extra cost. It was ok, not great.

  • Erica Camp

We love going to the free concert series at Miler Outdoor Theater! The only downside is parking, I recommend parking at the nearby science museum down the street that’s a close walk to the park.
Dog-friendliness
A great place to bring your dog - lots of space but keep your dog on leash.

  • Jeff Smith

Great park in the Museum District/Medical Center. Close to Rice University, the Houston zoo and the Museum of Natural Science. Outstanding location to go for a walk or just sit in solitude observing nature. So quiet and peaceful. The ducks and squirrels play around you. It's so relaxing!

  • Adalberto Lopez

If you want a really fun day go on the paddle boats. 30 minute ride gives you all the work out you will need for the day there is a big fountain in the middle of the lake that really makes a splash that's if you don't mind getting wet. But nice to take in the park and just float there.

  • Mariya Pugacheva

Crowded and parking is hard to find but it's a nice time! Large areas to walk around, affordable peddle boarding (though not a huge lake to do it in) and places to visit like the zoo and flower areas.
Restrooms
Restrooms available in various places around the park. Free

  • Christa Jones

Enjoyed a relaxing walk in the park while waiting for the family who were visiting the zoo. I wish I could've had more time there. The park has a great layout, playgrounds, picnic areas, clean bathrooms and food options. And it had free parking which was truly surprising.

Beautiful park. I only got to see a small part during my but it was beautiful and well maintained. I made use of the shaded pathways to make walking more tolerable in the summer heat. The little train going around the park looked like fun for the family.
