First time here today with my daughter. We walked over from our home in Old Town area so nice to be so close to us. We ordered some food - sandwiches, coffee and some drinks. The food was very tasty and served quickly. Amazing selection of coffee from all over the world too. The atmosphere is very relaxed - almost like sitting in the living room of a very nice home - complete with fireplace. and book case! It was nice to be able to sit down without feeling like we were an inconvenience to the establishment and rushed out the door. I know there is a health crisis going on - but a nearby Coffee / Sandwich place in New City /Lincoln Park area that just opened put us through too many checks just to sit down at the three or four uncomfortable tables that were available. Will not do that again. Kapej is clearly a hidden gem located just steps from the Sedgwick Brownline stop. If you live in Lincoln Park, Old Town, Near Northside - or even if you are further out - its well worth the trip. Places like this are not found too often - especiallly now!

Never again. I got a bad feeling about the place when the person at the counter made a big deal about needing to order online, even though I was the only person in line. Not the warmest of introductions! While ordering, I asked explicitly to confirm that WiFi was available. I had a meeting coming up in 15 minutes. Turns out the WiFi didn't work and I had to relocate abruptly. Worst part was that instead of offering to comp the coffee or just apologize which is all I really expected in that situation, I was told flatly that "We don't charge for WiFi so can't make any promises," more or less. At least the egg sandwich was pretty good. Sketchy vibe, rude staff, busted WiFi. I really like to support small local businesses, but I would sincerely not recommend given the attitude, price levels and nonexistent WiFi.

Adding another review because of the owner’s sassy and, more importantly, incorrect response to my last review. First off, I was on “YOUR” website. And no, it wasn’t working. I tried several times from two different phones. The boxes next to the items were not selectable. That’s great that it worked for other people, it doesn’t mean it wasn’t working for me. Maybe try listening to your customers? Rather than being so surly and rude one the phone. Secondly, no, I was not looking for delivery. I was looking to pick up, which I told you on the phone. Once again, you did not listen to me, but were extremely rude and told me I was wrong. So yes, as you said you “assumed” and were wrong. Again, maybe try listening. Not being able to place an order on the phone isn’t the end of the world. Being surly and rude and then lying when you respond to my review gets you two 1 star reviews.

A friend and I went in this morning at around 8 AM with the intent of purchasing baked goods. I was recommended by various coworkers (I work in the neighborhood) to check this place out. As I was waiting to be serviced, the person working at the time, while he was busy making drinks, says to us, “No outside drinks are allowed. It’s like bringing a 6-pack to a bar.” First of all, there is ZERO MENTION outside of the cafe that outside drinks were not allowed. If that was the case, we would have not entered. Secondly, we came in there just buy baked goods because we were told by people in our circle how delicious the place was and then be on our way. Needless to say, we will not be returning to this cafe. What a massive letdown to be treated this way and as someone who works in customer service (10+ years and counting) this is not the way to talk/treat potential customers.

PSA — a ONE man operation, online order is appreciated to speed up process. Clean-up after yourselves. He has loyal fans. A DESTINATION! One of the very few old school café décor when it was an affordable hippie, not the expensive hipster. Plenty of seating. CTA Friendly — off the Brown & Purple SEDGWICK STATION. A better option than Dunkin. Hearty, moist and well-seasoned GRILLED CHICKEN SANDWICH comes with avocado slices. I ordered his recommendation as grilled chicken is usually a flop. Excellent value for your $$. I'm happy and satisfied with NUTELLA LATTE. I look forward to the house roasted coffee beans (available online and in-store/caffe).

Rude staff. A friend and I came in today with the intention to purchase food, we had never been to this place before and wanted to give it a shot. We were finishing up some drinks we got earlier while we were waiting in line to order when the gentleman behind the bar very rudely said, "No outside drinks allowed. It's like bringing a 6pack into the bar." Trying to be cooperative we asked if we could order to go in which he rudely and huffily agreed. At this point we were so disappointed with the customer service we decided to go elsewhere and will not be returning. What a disrespectful and unfortunate first impression to make on a new customer.

I am so happy to have found Kape'j Coffee on the backside of Old Town!! The Owner Didier is so knowledgeable about coffee. His passion shows as he roasts his own beans to create layers of flavor in his coffee choices. In addition to coffee, there are kid's lattes, a ton of tea options, natural energy drinks, salads, sandwiches and pastries. I have loved everything I have tried. The room offers a cozy, eclectic mix of brick floors, vintage furniture, wood burning fireplace, artwork and books. It is the perfect backdrop do work, study or simply enjoy your food and beverage. This is my go to coffee spot and it should be yours as well!!

I've visited Eva's over a year ago, on a trip to Chicago. Ever since I find myself returning to photos of the place on Google Maps. It is, for me at least, the ideal coffee shop. Big, soft Victorian armchairs, heavy wooden tables, fresh pastries, ambient lampshades, wooden floors and red brick walls - this place is the definition of cozy, comfortable and welcoming. The wide array of excellent teas and coffees on offer don't hurt, either. I honestly can't recommend this place enough, but be warned - if you're coming in from out of town, you might find yourself missing this place when you get back home.

Staff is super friendly and hospitable! The environment has so much character and plenty of workspace—there is a lovely fireplace, tons of couch chairs and high top tables for work. The space is also super well-kept and clean. The vanilla lavender latte (I used oat milk) was the most heavenly drink I’ve had thus far. The menu is very large food wise and drink wise. The food is fantastic and portions are good. I had the caprese sandwich and it was great (bread was fresh and broke apart nicely and the vegetables were tasty). 10/10 recommend; this is my new go-to spot.

  • J

Egg, sausage and cheese croissant: huge size, too salty, not my favorite. Lavender latter: could not smell/taste the lavender at all. Was just a plain vanilla latte. Wi-fi: awful. I came here to do some work and the wifi is very spotty. Does not connect in certain areas. Service: I had to order online because they don't take orders at the counter. Would I come here again? Not really.. Just in terms of coffee, I've had better.

The atmosphere of this coffee shop is unique and fun, filled with local art, cozy furniture, brick walls, and a useable fireplace. The staff is kind and I've only had great interactions here. The coffee and pastries are good and you have a wide selection of beverage options to choose from. The bagels are a personal favorite. They're light and fluffy and you can add a variety of toppings to them to make the meal more filling. In an area of the city that is overrun with chains, Kapéj Coffee is a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend checking it out.

  • Melanie Riley

Egg and sausage sandwich on a bagel was really good and big enough to be shared with my dining partner. Didn't care for the iced coffee though. Have had iced coffees and cold brews in many different coffee shops....don't know what brand this place uses, but this was pretty bad (to me). I know everyone has different tastes. Atmosphere cozy; place much bigger inside than it looks from the outside.

Kapej is a charming coffee shop that everyone should check out! The atmosphere is 10/10. With plenty of seating it was the perfect place to take my visiting friends and family, and it is also a cozy spot to sit and do work. The Nutella latte is highly addicting (I like it iced or hot), and the breakfast sandwiches are delicious and big enough to share. The barista is really friendly and always working so hard. Highly recommend!

Super cozy coffee shop by the Sedgwick Brown Line stop that has a wide variety of drinks and food, including croissant sandwiches and bagels. They have plenty of seating for either small groups or individuals working remotely. I got The ham, egg, and cheese croissant and it was really tasty. Will definitely be back.

This is one of very few independent coffee shops within a mile of me, and definitely the best. The coffee is fantastic, the service is good, and the wifi works well. I rarely have any of the food items, but when I have, they've been good; seems just a bit overpriced for what you get, but it's not like their kitchen does much volume to cover their costs. My spouse has had the tea and thought it was good. In short, it may not be perfect, but it's everything a neighborhood cafe should be.

  • Colleen wOOD

We googled breakfast spots near our location and saw some pretty delicious posted images of their food and coffees so we stopped in and it exceeding our expectations. The croissant sandwiches are very large and savory. We got the iced vanilla lavender coffee — definitely get this! Sooo good!

This is hands down my favorite coffee shop in Chicago. I study here every weekend, and am obsessed with the Vanilla Lavender Latte (hot or iced)! The owner, Didier, is such a great guy and runs the whole cafe on his own. It's clear that he loves this place, and his customers! I tried a starbucks latte recently, and could not even finish it because it tasted so bad compared to Kapéj! He also roasts his own beans and sells them, and they are fantastic! If I could give 10 stars, I would!

  • tsh606

The best kept secret when it comes to cafés in Old Town. Owner is a very passionate coffee bean purveyor, really knows his stuff in addition to offering quality paninis, sandwiches, etc. Truly on of my favorites. Think twice before going to the Starbucks around the corner and head here.

Highly Recommend: will definitely be stopping here more often. The patte and bacon egg and cheese croissant were great! The place has a very chill-cozy vibe. Seems the kitchen is a one man show but what we got was really good. As signs in the place suggest to put the order in advance on line. All in all I loved this place.

Super good coffee and a very cozy, cute vibe. The staff is very friendly. The one thing I’d say is that it’s really quiet in here. Maybe I came in at an off time, but in the middle of the day people were kind of glaring at my partner and I for chatting at a normal volume and we felt obligated to whisper. I feel like this is more representative of the people in there at the time than the cafe itself, but it surprised me. I’ve never been to a quieter cafe!

The owner and staff are extremely professional, friendly and helpful - and able to juggle many orders all at the same time and be accurate! We were visiting Chicago for a family wedding and found this gem to be the perfect way to start our day every morning!

I just discovered this place a week ago and have already been three times. I've tried three different latte flavors (vanilla, caramel, and dulce de leche) and they've all been great. Also the breakfast sandwiches are next level. Regardless of what protein you get they always put a good amount on and the bagels you can get them on are so fresh. This is my new favorite coffee shop in Old Town - should definitely check it out if you're in the area!

  • Cody See

Was in town and needed a place to work for the afternoon so I took a gamble and tried this place. If I lived here, I'd probably make this my safe haven, for when my reclusive-soul craves human interaction but doesn't want to be overwhelmed by a "busy" coffee shop. It feels familiar, like a family or friends made happy memories here and the vibe still remains. If I'm ever in the area again, I'd make a point to stop back.

Bigger on the inside than it looks. Croissant sandwich - huge and delicious. Literally 2x the size of normal breakfast bagels or croissants. My sausage sandwich had 2 big patties. The muffin was large, moist, and yummy. Definitely coming back.

Very cozy atmosphere, I didn’t get to sit down because we were in and out, but the coffee was wonderful and I could see myself coming here to get some work done on one of the comfy chairs. My brother got a latte and I got a dulce de leche latte as the owner recommended and it was delicious too. Thank you so much for the hospitality!

Love this coffee shop! It's the perfect place to get some work/reading done while not feeling like you are the slave to your work. Be aware that the vanilla lavender latte is very sweet. The only improvement needed I think is the music, it would be so much more immersive if the music comes from a selective Playlist than just whatever the TV is showing.

I had a great experience. Had coffee and croissant sandwich. The sandwich was huge and delicious. The coffee was so good I took some home. The place was clean and the staff very friendly. Explained the differences in their coffee's and even gave us a little bit of history. I would highly recommend it. Can't compare to Starbucks because you might pay the same for a sandwich but get half the amount of food.

  • Rhonda Funk

Everyone must visit this delightful gem!! I love everything about this place. The owner is charming and gracious. The atmosphere is cozy and quaint. The sandwiches and muffins are delicious. Most importantly the custom roasted coffee beans create rich yet smooth lattes that are perfectly prepared. Hands down this is my absolute favorite coffee spot!! Oh they also have a huge variety of teas as well.

You walk in and there is an immediate charm to the place. The decor, the art on the walls (from local artists), and smiles on peoples faces are very welcome. The coffee is delightful and exactly what I need in the morning but the breakfast sandwiches keep me coming back. The croissants are huge and delicious and they absolutely stack the insides with a generous portions. Love this as a morning stop

  • James Halm

Great selection of drinks, the owner truly cares about getting you the best taste in whatever you order. Highly recommend the croissant sandwiches, they're so delicious and wonderfully seasoned. The ambiance of the shop is great too with art from local artists displayed, and a working fireplace to cozy up to on cold days.

I can't wait to come back here & I can't wait to see this place celebrate their 10th year that's eight more and baby I believe they're going to make it big time! Everything was fabulous from the moment you get in the door and you see the very eye-watering in a good way aesthetic. The coffee and the food was priced at a really really great price as well! 7star!

A fantastic, global selection of coffee at this brick courtyard converted into coffee shop. The staff is very friendly and will even place an order for a certain kind of international bean and roast it to your liking. The space is ideal with cozy lounge chairs, work spots, and large tables. Tasty bagels, salads, sandwiches, and pastries as well.

  • Helen Easterling

This place is great! I cannot vouch for the food, but the coffee was good, and VERY reasonably priced. Especially for an independent coffee shop. The service was good; nice staff. Located right near the Sedgwick brown line stop. I came on a weekday morning so it may have been less crowded, but I imagine it would be a good place to do work at.

  • Tina Luo

Love love love this coffee shop and it’s owner! You can find me working here almost every day - lots of outlets, comfortable sitting space and fast wifi. I usually get the Nutella or matcha latte and they taste better than you can find at any other cafe in the city (and I’ve been to most of them). Say hi to Didier if you swing by kapej!

  • Seth Paskin

Based on the reviews, I stopped in while visiting. To my surprise and delight, they have pour over. The owner recommended a bean and then did a fresh grind and took time to do the pour right. Delicious, exactly what I wanted. Relaxing in the cozy ‘library’ setting, I was transported back to my 80’s college years, which is a good thing.

  • Jan Crosbie-Taylor

Very Good Coffee- best in the area we felt. The hot latte was very good! and my spouse said the drip was good;she is very particular about her coffee. I'm visiting and this was the best coffee in the neighborhood. Sitting by the fire watching it snow outside wasn't bad either.

Only two big tables to get work done. Most tables were small and at too low a height to be able to write in a notebook or lean over comfortably on a computer. The two big tables are reserved for large parties only. I prefer FoxTrot which is three blocks away with many seating options, good WiFi, and plenty of outlets.

A lovable atmosphere for a coffee shop. The exposed brick on the walls and flooring sets the tone. I got an espresso for over $3 and it was favorable. It had nice texturing with a little bit of everything. Barista is an interesting individual

Very nice interior, we expected a fresh roast coffee, but completely awful and impersonal way of ordering - the bartenders do not speak to you, to get our 2 coffee cortado, we were asked to fill in a personal questionnaire with email and phone number - what the heck for 2 coffees?!? Not recommendable for tourists.

I couldn't be happier to have come across Kapej. I had just been looking for a place to get work done, but now Kapej is itself a destination. This place used to be known as Evas coffee I don’t know why they made it so hard to pronounce. This place has quality coffees and hot chocolates with board games. Easily one of the bests coffee shop in Chicago and the No. 1 in Old Town. Personally, I get a matcha latte with two shots of espresso there, and it’s amazing. There is no doubt in my mind, the bests matcha latte that I have ever had and easily no. 1 in Chicago, is here at Kapej. Prove me wrong.

I liked this place a lot! I'll be back. The interior is very warm and comfortable. I sat at a window table and read the paper for an hour+ while drinking a latte and eating the Chipotle Breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was very tasty with a soft fresh biscuit-bun. And the latte was very good.

Eva's has been demonstrating exceptional hospitality since it opened years ago. My/our Philosophy discussion group has been enjoying itself there every Saturday for years. Eva's provides us with the space and tables our sizeable group

This place is perfect... Nice location in Chicago Great coffee and staff. The decor fits the historical city area. Food was amazing too. They also serve smoothies teas and iced drinks. I'm stopping there first when in the city again.

Truly delicious coffee and incredibly friendly staff. This is my favorite coffee shop in Chicago even though it's on the edge of a not-so-great neighborhood. Free WiFi and plenty of table space makes it perfect for getting work done.

  • Allie Nelson

Easily my favorite coffee shop in the neighborhood! I love the breakfast sandwiches, especially with the jalapeno bagel

Out of towners here. We walked in and placed an order for 5 coffee and a raspberry muffin. Everything came out quick and the owner was super nice and friendly! The muffin was warm and my lavender latte was delicious!!! Great spot

Incredible, high quality coffee (try the Kona Mocha if looking for a sweet treat) and tasty bagels and sandwiches. Homey, calm ambience, and a nice owner. My favorite place in the Old Town / Lincoln Park area to go for coffee.

Kapej Coffee is a hidden gem. Filled with comfortable armchairs, tasteful furniture, excellent lighting, and even better coffee. It is the perfect place to do work, have a coffee date, or just lounge and enjoy your coffee.

First time visitors and would happily return! Amazing coffee and well crafted drinks. Staff was passionate and friendly. Always love a place that supports local artists and encourages guests to hang out and read a book!

We stayed in an AirBnB above this coffee shop and enjoyed each drink we tried. Our kids also loved their kids drink menu. Also, the owner is so knowledgeable about the city and gives great advice on what to see and do.

Very good food. Nice atmosphere, newly remodeled modern Asian style. Great service, complete wine list, reasonable prices. Large portions; plenty for leftovers. I love their white chocolate dipped fortune cookies too!

I expected a third wave coffee shop with skilled baristas and specialty food and bakery. Instead this is an ok place no different to chains like Starbucks.

Great independently owned cafe right next to the brown line. The owner is extremely friendly and the vibe is quiet for working or having a conversation with friends. Plus in the winter the fireplace is lovely!

Today, I had the best iced latte in Chicago. Didier is such a great person. I was impressed by his dedication to make the best coffee. If you like coffee, you should totally try this place out.

Has the potential to be great. Cortada coffee was good! Pork sandwich as a whole was alright. But the pork was bland and not flavored.
