GF was craving Italian so I had a google search for the best Italian food nearby and it directed us to L'ulivo. We went to the one on Villiers Street opposite Charing Cross Station on a cold rainy Tuesday early evening. We walked in as (what looked like) the branch manager was also walking in. She grabbed two menus and walked us to a table right away. She literally walked up to the table, slapped the menus down and went off. Strike 1. Place looks like it's family run, you can kinda tell. We waited and then took an order, two lasagnas, some garlic bread, an appletiser and a berry mojito. We waited a short while. They brought out an appletiser and a coca-cola. We told them that wasn't the drinks order. They took the coke back and then our food came out shortly after. About 60% of the way through our meal the manager brings a coke again. We tell her it's the wrong order, and then we wait another age for the drink. Strike 2. I then had to get up from my meal, go to the bar and I was impeded by the waiter. I was trying to get a straw for the super-late berry mojito. That berry mojito was just juice and grenadine... Lasagna was decent, and the garlic bread wasn't very garlic-y at all. A shame. The third waitress to serve us took our payment. We decided to remove the service charge, to which she replied 'was something wrong with the service today?' Haha if only she had a few mins to spare I would have told her! Overall verdict: Decent to below-average food, mid-level price about £55 for everything. Decent ambience. Bad service but I will give them the benefit of the doubt on a busy Tuesday in central London. I don't envisage it's always like this, because it was pretty woeful. I don't usually write reviews but this was so bad I had to.

We have been here several times but not for a while, however today was awful, so never again. We were squeezed into a table where there was no room to move and everyone was so close one lady's hair was touching our table. Waited ages to order our drinks. When they arrived, my margarita came in a tiny martini glass which was only half full for £11.50, literally 3 small sips and it was gone! We waited a long time for someone to take our food order. We caught a waiter's attention and asked if we could order. He looked at us blankly. We asked him again, still no comprehension, then he sent an English speaking colleague over. Starter eventually came, the calamari was not fresh, bought in frozen. Waited about 30 minutes for the next course to eventually come and it wasn't worth the wait. We had to call the waiter over again to ask for the bill as he never approached our table. To be honest, this was a blessing as he had the worse BO I have even had the misfortune to come across. The smell was so bad it assaulted our senses and we were forced to hold our breath when he was near. The bill finally arrived along with another shock. BEWARE: The service charge is 25%! Nowhere on the menu or website is this mentioned. Having eaten in the Savoy, The Ivy, Windows and many more excellent restaurants, this is the most extortionate service charge we have had to pay for such bad food, bad service and a waiter with disgusting personal hygiene. My advice would be to steer well clear of this one.

Food was mediocre, for an Italian restaurant we had to send back the pasta. We had to wait about an hour before food arrived after we ordered, and two of the orders were wrong, one didn't turn up and like i said pasta had to be sent back. The serving staff were either extremely miserable and/or couldn't speak English, making it overly hard to order and even after ordering it was incorrect or didn't turn up. One of the serving staff was extremely rude to one of our table members, who was the oldest member of the table with being 89, she refused to believe she took the order incorrect and berated him for standing up for himself and explaining that he did in fact order something else, another member of our table stood up for him as the staff member started to become more hostile. Even drinks took along time to even be served, they were good drinks but not worth the money. The staff member, who couldn't speak English, when we ordered one drink (a white Russian) proceeded to ask 4 times if its a white coffee, even though its on their menu. This did not turn up, and they still put it on the bill. The environment was very overwhelming, there were too many tables upstairs and it was overcrowded, nobody was being seated downstairs even when its practically impossible to move, even for the staff. you couldn't move without knocking into someone, even in the middle of a pandemic. Extremely loud, we came home with headaches, don't waste your time going there. Still in shock from how appalling the staff where.

Poor experience which started with being seated nearly 45 minutes after our table booking - most of which was spent waiting outside the restaurant. The table was wet once we sat down (one of the servers did apologise for this) and there were crumbs on the seats. Food was quick and pleasant, but there were whole, unchopped garlic cloves in two of our dishes. We requested water for the table which never came. We also ordered a side which never arrived but was added to the bill. When we brought up the missing dish at the end of the meal (we were in a rush, so didn’t bring this up earlier), the server who took our order accusingly asked us why we didn’t bring this up before. Another bill was brought to the table by a further member of staff with discount for the long wait, but still with the side dish (so there had clearly been no communication between them). The woman who had been told about the missing dish never returned with the amended receipt and appeared to get into an argument with the staff who had added the discount when we went to the till to pay and brought up the correction again. Very disorganised overall. The woman seemed miserable with her job. The restaurant was clearly overbooked, and quite crowded even once seated. The food, nice decor, and a few apologetic members of staff unfortunately didn’t make up for the rest of the experience.

A busy and energetic Italian restaurant with an extensive menu and excellent customer service. The vibe here is warm and welcoming with rustic decor and walls lined with bottles of wine. The restaurant is split onto two levels the main floor (accessible from the street) and basement seating consisting of a medium sized area which can be used for larger groups and a couple of break out rooms. The dishes are hearty and well cooked, with bold flavours and generously sized portions. It's not fine dining, but glorious comfort food. Drinks are pricey but that tends to be the norm given the area, and the food does offer good value. Of particular note, is how hard the staff worked. We visited with a large group (around 40 people) and though we had given a la carte meal selections in advance, there were still some changes here and there. Understandably, there were a couple of glitches over the course of the evening, but our waiters went out of their way to remedy errors or issues. Though the overall rating is 4*, without hesitation, the staff offer 5* customer service. If Italian is your go-to cuisine, the L'ulivo should be firmly on your list of favourites.

First time I've been not sure I would rush back ..other than the young lady who greeted us at the door service staff sullen and at times rude...no pleasantries at all to the point I stood up to put my coat on a waiter pushed past me behind I have s bad knee and it unbalanced me no apologies The food was ok other than chicken in the salad dry tastless And they need to cut the pizza through properly at least into 4 It's impossible with the knife you have and if your sharing you don't want to handle it Or give a pizza wheel with it. I definitely would not have left the £12 service but it was already added not good should be eared this was not I am ready to tip over the amount for good service willingly I've been in this business for years and didn't want to embarrace my guests so I reluctantly paid Get your act together front of house staff definitely letting this restaurant down shape up or ship out..I had to call the attention of 3 talking staff in a huddle that a lady on her home needed something.....really!

Don’t trust the Open Table reviews: I went there, because it seemed to have the best value for money based on 1200 OpenTable reviews. However, the bruschetta was made with flatbread and cheap tomatoes, the staff was not friendly, they never came to check on us for the food and actually were rude when were unhappy with the main. The vegetable soup was not properly tasty, the calamari was deep fried in cheap oil and actually burnt (£13!!), the mains were no better: the fish was just about edible, the chicken schnitzel Milanese was absolutely awful - seemed defrosted - and had to be sent back, and the lasagna was a disgrace to Italy! It was made with cheddar. To be fair, the schnitzel was exchanged for free for gnocchi, which tasted okay, had a decent bite, but the sauce was not properly made and was probably just a tomato base for the pizza . Finally, we wanted to know where Chef was from. The waitress didn’t know, and had to ask in the kitchen and turned out that the chefs were from Bulgaria and Bangladesh! I Certainly won’t be going back there.

I am not a huge fan of Italian cuisine but my friend came over to my office after work and we were both hungry and decided to have a nice chat over food so we visited L'ulivo. The dishes we ordered were not bad but we both agreed they could be improved in terms of seasoning or something. We were not wow-ed. My dish was supposed to be spaghetti in tomato sauce but I wanted rice so they made a modification to risotto for me. The rice was undercooked. I don't like chewy rice. Not sure if that's how risotto is supposed to be. The dish was £23. I've got better satisfaction from cheaper dish elsewhere. On the more positive side, the service was ok. Waiters were respectful. The ambience is nice as well. But most importantly, the company was great.

Great location for theatres. Staff friendly but a few things were amiss. As we were sitting closest to the kitchen and the bins we noticed that One of the waitresses clearly had a cold, blowing her nose with a tissue but walked around the whole time delivering plates with the same tissue touching the food. I think they were also short staffed so one of the chefs would come out empty some bins in the corridor and start cooking again without washing hands. We’re both tea totallers but My partner is in bed with food poisoning so can’t really say anymore. The final bill comes with a 25% compulsory service charge. When I asked for the bill without this, I was told that only the big boss can remove it and that they were not around. The table next to ours also tried to remove it. I usually pay a significant tip but Don’t like the idea of being forced to give a tip.

I have visited for dinner with my friends on a Saturday night. I love the decor and the atmosphere. The service was ok the food was eatable. My friends were ok with their food but, as I was getting to the end of mine, I noticed that the bottom of the plate was full of oil and, while I was trying to finish my foo, I actually started getting sick because of the intense flavour and amount of oil at the bottom of the plate. It was sad and unfortunate, its far from the best seafood pasta I ever ate, but it was ok. I also find that for the quality of the food the prices are way to high. I believe the quality of the food doesn't justify at all the money spent. Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be returning here. However I want to point, once again, the service was good but, if the food doesn't makes its justice is not worth coming back.

Booked this place for a Book Club meet up that was also celebrating it's 1st birthday. We needed somewhere not too noisy where we could have a group of 10 people and be able to talk together and somewhere that wasn't too difficult to find. L'ulivo was in fact on the same street as our usual meeting spot! Having the space in the basement was great as it allowed us to break out a bit more if the group got larger but the music was also more muted here. The food was delicious and covered vegetarian and vegan diets and service was excellent. Booking was extremely easy online and they read all notes you provide so catered for the request of the basement space as well as a tomato allergy. None of us had ever been here before and did not know about it but all praised the venue. It has now become our regular Book Club meeting spot!

We came in for pre xmas girls catch up. Food was ok but customer service nonexistent. Had to wait for ages to order despite the restaurant being almost empty only two other tables were taken. Then we had to wait for over 30 min to be given desert menu after which we didn't get to order it as no one came back to take our order. A German couple next to us left too as couldn't get served despite staring at all the chefs and waiters. They looked everywhere but at customers. We decided to leave without desert and only when we stated putting our coats on a waiter run up to us to give us the bill. Apologised for the wait but didn't offer explanation. We won't be back for this reason as clearly staff don't care to upsell or even just sell any food.

Very disappointing experience, would not recommend. I came here for a lunch and the food was, for the most part, disgusting. The Salmon was undercooked with a fatty bottom and absolutely drowned in the flavourless butter sauce. The salad that my friend had was also underwhelming with canned tuna and no sauce until she asked. The Bruschetta and Fries were okay, though they both also needed more seasoning. Overall all the food was flavourless. The service was not good, very unfriendly servers who wouldn't listen to you. Except for one lady who's name I did not catch. The atmosphere is cramped and loud and the food is massively overpriced. There are so many amazing Italian restaurants around here, with better food and reasonable priced. This is not the one to go to!!

  • simon taylor

We arrived prior to the evening rush, and chose our table. Drinks and food orders were taken and within a couple of minutes our entrees arrived.. which leads me to suspect this was not prepared freshly.. breaded (hard) calamari.. brucheta was a small pizza base with the standard topping. Drinks were okay. Mains arrived, salad was okay but uninspiring..just lettuce, no other greenery. Pizza was good, thin and topped adequately. Service started fine but became quite chaotic once it started to fill up. Additional orders were forgotten, waited too long to get any attention. The wrong drink was charged to our bill and had to be removed so it is best to check it at the end.

Food was beautiful however our dining experience was ruined by two children no more than 4 years old running riot around the restaurant. The family seemed to be known by staff members who sat with them while the children climbed on tables next to diners, grabbing knives and lighted candles. There was no consideration taken for the health and safety of the kids or the experience of other diners. We eventually asked the staff if they were going to address the situation when one of the children grabbed the flame of a candle. Not the relaxing experience you would expect at a 9pm dinner.

I popped into this restaurant with my family after a graduation ceremony at the Royal Festival Hall. We were looking for somewhere to have quick, reasonable and decent meal and this was the place. The staff were helpful and arranged for our large group to sit at tables that were already reserved as we only intended to be there for a short time. No sooner had the food been ordered it was served and it was fantastic. Everyone ordered something different on the menu and everyone was very satisfied with the results. Bravo! A lovely restaurant in a busy street that keeps it authentic and at very reasonable prices. Definitely worth the visit.

England is not known for having the best food. After days of eating bland, unseasoned mediocre meals we were ecstatic to find this restaurant! The food was hands down the best we had on this trip and the second time we ate here the meal I had was probably my most favorite meal I’ve ever had. The service is fine. The kitchen is quick and efficient. The staff isn’t overly friendly but no complaints. Our server remembered us the second time we came in which was nice. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area looking for an amazing meal!

Atmosphere was great. Very soothing and adequate for a lovely night. With reservations you get your table pretty fast which we gladly did. Caesar Salad was nice, needs to be mixed before eating to make sure all flavors are mixed with the sauce. Gamberoni Al Burro was tasty and cooked quite nicely. Would’ve loved to taste the sourness more but still good. Penne Fantasia, the classic Pizza Margarita, and Risotto Al Funghi were all good choices that we went with. You can’t go wrong with any of them.

Popped in on a busy Thursday evening 16/2/23 hoping to get a table after sight seeing all day with four kids and my parents (dad has a guide dog) The staff were amazing. The manager who was fantastic and placed us in private room Away from the busy part of the restaurant so the dog could settle and the kids didn’t need to worry about disturbing others. The food was delicious and the service was really fast. Thank you to all the staff there as they made us feel at ease with so many of us. Would recommend to everyone.

ate here at our last night in london. the food was excellent and those serving us were kind. however there was a lady who took my plate as i couldn’t finish it and i told her i felt sick, i was snarled as she walked away. seen her speaking to another member of staff who then came over and asked if everything was ok. after this i felt uncomfortable the whole time i was here so we left. the next day i actually ended up in a & e and it turned out i had a water infection. i won’t be returning if this is how customers are treated.

I came here for dinner with my family. We came in about an hour and a half before closing. Our visit started off well and turned sour. The food was good but the service was definitely below average. We were very mindful of the time and the fact that we were there late. But towards the end of our meal. The waiter came and took our food, ran and got the check and slammed it on our table and said we’re closing… while others were still sitting.. My whole table was stunned.. especially because there was still 30 mins till closing..

I was looking for an independent restaurant and, as I used to work nearby, I knew Villiers Street would be a good place to start. Visitors to London need to head here (a few hundred metres/yards from Embankment/ Charing Cross). Food and service were good and the facilities were well maintained. Highly recommended. There was a 12.5% discretionary service charge applied to the bill but I was happy to pay this as the food/service warranted it

Food is wonderful, there was too many staff members wondering around however. We were asked the same question by three different staff members in the span of a minute and the same sort of thing kept happening the entire time. All staff were lovely and friendly and the food was incredible like I said. It just got annoying being interrupted so regularly with questions we had already answered.

My phone was stolen by a vagrant who walked into the restaurant. The staff was incredulous to this and offered nothing but a weak apology. We sat in the back of the restaurant, and they allowed a vagrant to walk all the way into the back. This vagrant took my phone and left. Phone was reported and returned after the vagrant was arrested the same night. I did make a report to the police about the situation at the restaurant. We believe the restaurant was in on this. Don't eat here.

Packed full and bubbly when we went for a business lunch. I booked for 4 and had an extra join last minute. Staff were great finding us a larger table. Food was very good. I had seafood pasta, heaped with prawns, mussels and squid in a very tasty sauce. Table staff a bit dour. A top rate 'normal' restaurant. If you don't want fine dining but do want consistently good food at a viable price this is a great choice. No wonder it was packed full!

The food here is very expensive for what it is, £13.50 for a small plate of vegetarian pasta when the same at vapiano 10 mins away is £10 and double the amount of food. £3.75 for a bottle of water is also a rip off. The place itself is nice and we received a good service but at nearly £100 for 4 of us for 4 pastas, 1 portion of prawns and 1 portion of calamari including 3 soft drinks and a cup of tea with a £12 isn't justifiable. I won't be going here again.

An Italian restaurant with the usual selection of dishes. The staff seem to be mainly from that region which added to the atmosphere. Portions were reasonably good but for the price, which was on the high side, there could have been a bit more. The menu was difficult to interpret given my unfamiliarity with this kind of food. Pictures rather than words would have helped me choose what to order.

We loved this place. Late night food after theatre trip. Service was so fast and really friendly. Food was just lovely, we all had pizzas, all had great tasting base's. I wanted plain with added toppings for Veg choice, Margherita for my Son was tasty and my husband's Calzone had spicy sausage instead of ham which was a great twist on the usual filling for this food. Thanks guys, we had a lovely meal which topped off a great evening

Really like the place! The food was nice. The service was fab! Nimmy, our waitress was so friendly and helpful. She also has knowledge about all the items on the menu! The place was so picturesque and beautiful! Overall nice experience

Really disappointing lunch here. Of the three starters, only one person enjoyed it. The pear and goats cheese special arrived charcoaled and the pear too hard to eat. The ravioli main had no flavour and the chicken and mushroom main tasted like Sunday gravy.

Walked into this restaurant by chance and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food! We were blown away by the lamb shank from the Christmas menu. Ordered risotto and their signature salmon & spinach pasta, which were great as well. Highly recommend this place!!

Nothing wrong with the food, but a solo female diner is basically ignored... sat for over 20 mins waiting to be offered a coffee, and at one point they started to set the other half of the table opposite me, then glanced up and realised there was someone sitting there... so scuttled off again, still not serving me. Nice fish but I would not return

  • Sandra Gavrila

food delicious, cannot say too much about service because apart one lady who’s been nice with us, everyone else been busy with a table where some of them friends been sitting, so much busy that they even forgot to bring my daughter the ice cream ending up not having it at all . overall we enjoyed the food and they would use a service improvement!

  • Eliad Malul

Was really nice. We run into the place due to rain and got lucky. We were 3 adults and 4 kids, service was great and we had great time. The food was great

We left Charing Cross theatre after 10 and we were worried we wouldn't have any place to eat. But this restaurant was just in front and open. I tried the gnocchi and they were delicious. I loved the sauce, it was so tasty and the tiramisu was really good too. Si glad we ended up here.

Friendly staff, great location & wide ranging menu. Food was very nice, wide range of options available. We tried goats cheese & aubergine starters and risotto/ lamb shank for main. All dishes were excellent. 12mins walk to West end so we ended up rushing but would def visit again. Busy Friday Evening so recommend booking ahead.

  • Keir Hopley

Pleasant, airy Italian restaurant on Villiers Street. My friend and I shared the garlic bread to start and there was easily enough for two. It was fresh and tasty. For the main course, I had an excellent lasagna. I had ice cream to finish: three generous scoops to the portion. The staff are friendly and efficient. Recommended.

  • Bog Art

Had a tasty Anatra con Arance with a nice white sicilian wine , the staff was friendly and fast! Got food served within 15 mins of sitting at the table.

Walked in to this restaurant one day that happened to be my birthday too, myself and husband were looking to have a special lunch and this was the place, atmosphere was wonderful, it was clean, had such a good vibe, the staff was polite and friendly, but the food was the most incredible. Can't wait to return.

Excellent service, and authentic high quality food. This was our fourth visit and it didn’t disappoint. A meal for two with starters, mains and two drinks without a tip came to just under £60. The restaurant is located directly next to Charing Cross Station, its only a 5 minute walk to the platform.

Nice vibe, friendly staff. I ordered the stake and a margarita pizza. The medium rare ribeye came a little too rare for my liking, but it was a good thick even cut of meat. The pizza was delicious. Out of 10 I'd rate this place a low 7

Starter was lovely, Roasted veg. I had seafood salad for main as i don't like pasta/pizza and it was literally a plate of iceberg lettuce with no other veg or even any dressing, and as if a bag of mixed seafood from asda had been poured over it. Appalling considering the price.

Ah… ordered a pizza, it was average/okay. Fine. Is it too much to expect consideration and a simple hello when you enter quite an empty restaurant ? When you order something, is it too much to expect receiving exactly what you ordered ?
