We checked out one of the popular Mexican restaurant in Washington Heights, Las Palmas. The interesting story behind them is that they used to be a bodega with a small kitchen until a few years ago. When people kept coming back for food, instead of their merchandise, they decided to go full-on restaurant. Smart move. Now they are one of the very popular Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood. Their complimentary chips and salsa were different from what I usually see at other Mexican restaurants. The "salsa" was more like a sauce, since it did not contain any solid thing like diced tomato, and were really spicy!!! You would want to have a glass of water in your hand before you dig in. The chips are definitely home made, felt a bit thicker and harder than some other chips I have tried at other places. It was still pretty good. We ordered their tacos, which are $9 for three, and you can mix and match what kind of tacos you want. Which is really great, because you can try three different flavors, instead of getting three of the same kind. I ordered Bistetc, Carne Enchilada, and Chorizo tacos. When they came out, it was nice portion and were all pretty good. Thinking that we will need more than just three tacos each, we also had ordered Camarones a la Mexicana at the beginning. Now that we know how satisfying these tacos are, we probably will not do that in the future. This was really huge portion, a lot more than we expected. It was really tasty though! Everything was fresh, tasty, and the staff were very nice. They spoke a little English, but they communicate with you better if you speak to them in Spanish. The service was not fast, but we were not in a hurry so that was not any issue to us. Read my full review of this restaurant and food on my food blog, foodlovergirl.

Absolutely love this authentic place! Came by myself one day and got their tacos and ceviche with a warning that the ceviche was quite big for one person (they were looking out for me!) but I told them that I love ceviche. They served me complimentary chips for dine in and the staff were so kind and delivered excellent service! When my ceviche came, they did not exaggerate as a small woman, I was scared I wouldn’t be able to finish but it was delicious and refreshing that I ate it all in one sitting! Additionally, watching the guy work at the bar was interesting and I found it so respectable for him to work so quickly and continuously! I have such high respect for the workers at this restaurant and saw how they were patient and took their time to explain each dish to someone, even if they were talking to the customer through another customer’s phone!

I have ordered from this restaurant multiple times and it was always good but the last time I ordered shrimp was mistakenly put in my food and I have a severe shellfish allergy. When my bf alerted them, the server gave him a hard time about switching it, then the server told the cooks to just pick out the shrimp and he told them no don’t do that because of the shellfish allergy. When we brought the food home, we found that they had left one shrimp in there by mistake and actually didn’t remake the order. We had to go back a third time and to be honest my lips still broke out with a slight reaction. Absolutely unacceptable, food allergies should be taken very seriously. I understand that people make mistakes but DO NOT give them the same order. We are not saying these things to be annoying, I would love to eat shrimp but unfortunately I cannot and break out with hives for weeks when doing so.

Las Palmas cherishes authentic Mexican cuisine in a direct, simple approach. The quality of this restaurant was immediately apparent upon walking in, being immediately and graciously welcomed, hearing the music on the jukebox, smelling the familiar aromas pouring from the partially open kitchen. I could have ordered anything from the appealing and varied menu, opting instead for tacos de lengua with as few toppings as necessary to fully enjoy the flavors and a rich, creamy horchata to drink. There are many tests a restaurant must pass to satisfy customers, but one of the most important is how they deal with simple food and Las Palmas exceeded expectations from the flavorful 'lengua', rough chopped onion and cilantro, house made salsas and horchata as good as any in New York or Mexico. The service was gracious and efficient and I can't wait to return.

I stopped by for a quick bite at 2:00 after the lunch rush had subsided. I was the only person in the restaurant. No chips and salsa offered. Other patrons that sat after me were brought without asking... I wanted to keep it quick and simple (well, no so much...) I ordered the burrito "Supreme". It took over a half hour to come out. The shrimp still had the tails attached and we're buried in the burrito- making it very difficult and messy to remove the tails. After it was all said and done it was $25 for a not so quick bite... and to top it off they up charged me $5 for a small side of mole sauce. To be honest it really needed the mole! Burrito was plain and boring. but for $5!!!! Better choices in the area.

Affordable and delicious food with generous portions given at this family owned establishment. Family-friendly restaurant. You can't go wrong with any of their dishes. The drinks are also good. While in Washington Heights, go in and eat some grub here. You won't regret it. The staff is amazing, friendly, and accommodating.

Great food!!! Genuine, tasty, fairly priced Mexican food. Impecable service, (the waitresses are very respectful, gentle and accommodating) and above all: A clean place! from windows to floor. We tried sopes tinga, pork pozole and cemitas milanesa (these are the best in NYC, a must to try here!) orange and carrot fresh juice... everything was delicious and generously portioned! So good! Chipotle and all of those chain restaurants have nothing on a place like Las Palmas. My only criticism is that between the TV and the music player on it can get a bit too noisy, I wish the management could change that and make it the perfect spot to enjoy Mexican food in NYC.

  • Eva Linda

The best and most satisfying horchata, hands -down, that I’ve ever tasted. I’ve had it from here twice. Once when I was pregnant and really craving it. And once today, when I was craving it once again. I bought the extra large size. I would love to come in with family the next time around and sit down to dine in here. I would try the mole. The hostess was explaining to me that they also offer a large array of foods, not just your average “Mexican” fare.

Yet another delicious local restaurant. The staff were very fun and friendly, and the food was great. Fresh veggies, well-seasoned meats, good bar drinks, and HORCHATA! If you've never had it, you need to try it. Of note, given that this is a local eatery, know that the staff speak mostly spanish. I am bilingual, so I was able to assist my friends. If you do not speak Spanish, that is also OK as the menu has many items (not all) in English. Be prepared with the Google Translate App.

I hosted a party of 10 people for a lunch on a weekday. Everything from the service to the food was phenomenal. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and prepare for our lunch get together. Everyone had a great time, and the food was delicious. We got guac and chips for the table and a variety of different entrées. Elaina is an amazing waitress. Thank you!

Hangover Mexican food My go to place when i need some food to get me out of a groggy stupor from a late night out. Today was chilaquiles with steak and two eggs. The meal comes with chips and salsa and a serving of pinto beens. I think i come here for the fresh juices though. A big gulp of fresh squeezed carrot and orange juice is $6! If u want real mexican food u gotta go above 125th street or leave Manhattan entirely. This place serves cemitas, huaraches, tortas, tostadas, pozole....

  • B. O

Fairly decent restaurant, one of the coolest things I love about this place is the fact that their food taste really delicious and you'll definitely get that Mexican taste and vibe, I've been here a couple of times on lunch breaks and it has never disappointed me for once, nice menu with lots of options at a fairly decent prices. If you're around and you need to grab lunch by yourself or with friends and family, I'd recommend this spot. Please like if you find this post helpful, thank you

  • Christina Ayad

I like to browse Google reviews for good food locally and I always get suspicious when there are two many 5stars it seems staged but this was the best Mexican place I have been too since I had been to Mexico 3 years ago. I had the tostadas with chicken beef and carnitas. Everything was fresh nice service and delicious. Just to add I love the decor and atmosphere too. It's small but it doesn't feel cramped and it's affordable but it doesn't feel cheap. Perfect

  • Casey Blake

I haven't been here since my brother passed but now this place has a special place in my heart. The food is really good and the drinks are balanced well. It's really simple and feel-good food for whenever you just want to have something quick or dine in.

The food was fresh and tasty. The quantity of food was great compared to the price. The staff who attended us was nice and jovial. The environment is not that great. It would have been better if the restaurant was bit more spaceous. And, they took long time to deliver the food. The place gets busier as the night sets in. So, the waiting time for food, checks, and to-go boxes increases. Overall, a nice restaurant with good food and not-so-good environment.

I was with a large party, and got to try many dishes. I enjoyed the tacos, fajitas, and the torta. This is a decent place for drinks if you are looking to order horchata or a margarita (they had jalepeño margaritas which were on point). One major drawback is that it is on the expensive side overall, and I have definitely had better-quality Mexican food (for a better price).

Omg i grew up eating these tacos since i was a kid.i grew up and my mom still lives around the block. Before there renovation it was a grocery store that sold tacos in the back the best tacos in NYC. My husband has gone plenty of times throughout our 11 year marriage for pregnancy cravings from Philadelphia (yes that far) to queens and bronx.(he did it for the kids lol) so many delicious menu items. I highly recommend it.

  • Jamie Byrne

Had a great dinner with my friend! We ordered the enchiladas because our server recommended them and they were SO good! Both the mole and the verde. It was $13 for 4 large enchiladas, beans and rice which was a great value. There was plenty of indoor seating and was spacious and they weren’t in a rush to get us out so we were able to stay and talk for a while. I would definitely come back.

  • Cool Ichigo

I would say only thing keeping me from giving this place a one start was the service. Came here with my siblings got seated very fast as the place wasn’t crowded. Order some drinks which came decently quick. But the food not so great. Most of it was drowning in beans, the chicken was over cooked (something as simple as chicken) couldn’t be done right how sad. They need a new chef.

  • Emilyn Elaine

DONT ORDER IN .. was starving after a long day and ordered chicken nachos around 10:30pm for delivery it is now 11:30 pm and haven’t received my nachos + the restaurant is now closed (I live literally 3 blocks from the restaurant). They could have just said they are no longer taking orders, but proceeded to accept the order and pretend I didn’t exist. Extremely unprofessional.

  • Sudeep Rajpoot

Best Mexican food in Washington heights! I had huevos rancheros, al pastor taco, chorizo taco, and chicken taco. The Only way to eat tacos is on a corn tortilla with cilantro and onions. Everything was cooked to perfection. Perfect amount of crisp in the chorizo. The horchata was a little too sweet for my taste, but I would still order it again. Can't wait to go back!

  • Vashti

My intention was to grab a quick bite to go but I ended up eating at the bar. Staff was friendly, atmosphere was lively and the taco was good. The green and red sauce was everything. I’ve been meaning to return whenever I’m in the neighborhood.

I've been going to this place for a couple of years now pre covid shut down. It was delicious then and is still delicious. The reopening Valentine's weekend I had the chicken taco salad and it was a mazing. Typically I'd order the steak fajitas but I tried something different and it was delicious. The margaritas are also delicious!

  • George Lin

I usually have pretty good experiences here - the chips and salsa on the house are pretty delicious but the red sauce is decently spicy. I’ve gotten the enchiladas, tacos, chalupas and chimichangas, all of which were delicious, but the burritos are kind of lacking in flavor. The nachos with queso fundido are excellent as well.

Trying to place an order over the phone called twice the first time the girl hang up the phone second time I try to call again and place my order had to wait for more than 5 mins on the line !!!! It’s not first time I’ve had to walk to the restaurant to place an order because of the same reason !!!!

  • Maurice Arreola

Just ok food. Kind of weird how they cook there food. There quesadillas have tons of chicken but no cheese. Enchiladas are made with a burnt black sauce not red or green. And burrito was mostly made of rice. Not happy at all. Plus staff isn't to interested in being friendly or attentive.

  • Karina Flores

The food took forever to come out (30 minutes waiting) during dine in, their was only two other tables prior to us and we were not given any chips or dip until after asked for an ETA on the food. Would definitely not recommend if you are hungry and expect good service. Go elsewhere. :)

Great deal for your dollar - I ordered some Chorizo Quesadillas and they were deliciously good and with just the right amount of spice for me. I waited a little while for my takeout, so I know the food was fresh, but not so long that I was annoyed. Will return!

  • DANY L

Excellent service and home style Spanish food. I have been here twice for lunch and dinner and will continue to stop by when in the area. They also deliver. Allot for your buck so when ordering realize that it's not a small meal so come with a hefty appetite.

  • Tom D

My "go to" Mexican place in my neighborhood. A free basjer of chips with pretty spicy green and red salsa to start. I always have either tacos, burrito, or enchiladas suiza with chicken and the green sauce. All pretty good. Good service and the place is clean

  • Nicholas Hornstein

Absolutely delicious. Coming from California this is the first authentic mexican restaurant I've found. Don't be fooled by the exterior (it is also a store). They deliver (although sometimes screw up orders). Their English isn't great but they try hard.

  • Daniel Garcia

One of my favorite Mexican restaurants to eat at! Very convenient with how close it’s located and how quick service is. Their food is delicious, I recommend las quesadillas de carne enchilada con tortilla de maiz and an horchata to follow it!

  • Latasha Berryman

I've been to better, the food was flavorful that all I can really say. Small area, most speak Spanish only, you have to ask for everything because they won't ask you or check on your table. Pricey for what you get. I wouldn't go back again.

Would've given them 4 stars, however they have a habit of rushing, if you tell them large shrimp they give you tiny, if you say crispy, they give you what they want.
