De obligatoria visita en el downtown de Miami, la Torre de la Libertad (1925) posee un pequeño museo para recordar cuando el histórico -y simbólico- edificio, cerca de desaparecer demolida en varias ocasiones por su céntrica locación y su antigua construcción, fuera el primer refugio de los recién llegados cubanos en el éxodo de 1961-1972 y de los niños del criticado programa Peter Pan. Los cubanos que huían de la dictadura castrista en su más temprana etapa eran atendidos aquí para recibir seguros médico y dental y los papeles de residencia. Originalmente la torre fue la sede del periódico The Miami News hasta 1957. Por 11 millones de dólares fue vendida a Jorge Mas Canosa en 1997, aunque datos oficiales dicen haber sido $4 millones. Fue declarada monumento nacional en 1979. El edificio de 100 años también ha entrado en la arquitectura más representativa de la Florida con su estilo mediterráneo. James Middleton Cox en 1926 y el arquitecto Richard Hiessenbottle en el 87 la desarrollaron. Su cúpula de 78 metros recuerda a la Giralda de Sevilla. En el 2003 más de 20 mil personas fueron a homenajear a Celia Cruz tras su muerte. En el 2005 la familia Mas Canosa la donó al Miami Dade College, para convertirse entonces en el museo cubanoamericano (1er piso) y donde tienen lugar importantes exposiciones y actividades y recreativas infantiles en su 2do y 3er nivel. En el 2015 el senador republicano de la Florida escogió este lugar para lanzar su campaña presidencial. También en el 2015 el rey de España Felipe VI recibió aquí la medalla presidencial de la alta distinción del Miami Dade College. Aunque usualmente la torre se ilumina en rojo de noche, con lo cual es muy fácil de identificar en el Biscayne boulevard, diferentes colores de luces la visten según la fecha o celebración.

went to the Museum of Art design better known as the MOAD -I think it's operated by Dade College.  it's in a historic building - the first floor of the museum is pretty boring mostly civil rights stuff - important but as they say "been there done that" way too many times - my eyes start to gloss over . 2nd floor is mostly like modern art - kind of unique &  it is free or actually they request a donation -not sure if it's mandatory whatever that means (that has always confused me)  and he said he'd let me in free if I agreed to have my picture taken which seemed strange & I don't care but nobody that I recall ever actually took my picture

There's some really interesting bits of history and some fab artifacts but it's limited and not art and design related in any way. There was an interesting instalation with political and social commentary that was very thought provoking, hard to explain to children but we tried. Interesting, but check what's their as art and design museum was not what we saw. My son is very interested in design which is why we went and why it only got 3 stars as there wasn't anything really relavent to design. The building itself is interesting and it has information about local historic immigration.

I gather that the exhibits change somewhat frequently, but at the time we visited, there was no exhibits at all devoted to design, which was disappointing. (The Cooper Hewitt Design Museum is one of my very favorite places, and I was hoping this might be similarly cool.) The museum had a bit of a schizophrenic feel in that the first floor was devoted exclusively to the Cuban emigrant experience and specifically Operation Pedro Pan, and then the second floor was art. It wasn't really clear how the two tied together. That said, the historical exhibit was interesting and well done.

I thought this was free but they charged us $8.00 for no art or design. It was history related about the cuban culture. My friend and I even walked on the side of the building when we left just to make sure it really was the museum of art and design. Its really misleading. They kept saying come back later to the free event to see the second floor. They are literally scamming tourist who don't know the area. We were tourist from Atlanta so unfortunately we got, got. Just a heads up to others.

Ok! Estaba interesada en visitar este museo luego de ver por su página de internet que estaría abierto en spring 2018 luego de remodelaciones, había leído que su entrada era gratis y que se podía hacer donaciones. Cuando llegue a la puerta, me pidieron el pago de una entrada y luego queriéndome vender una membresía para entrar también a otros museo. Luego de hablar un poco más con la chica en la entrada resulta que no es a todos los museos que están en la lista de membresía. :(

Muy lindo museo, en el primer piso había una exposición sobre la inmigración cubana y otra sobre la historia de América con impresiones y libros antiguos. En el segundo piso estaba la exposición de arte, pudimos sacar fotos con cámara y nos divertimos mucho observando y jugando con los efectos de luz y colores. Como estaban haciendo refacciones y había ruido, nos cobraron menos la entrada. La atención excelente.

The staff were all polite, one of the exhibits was closed so the tickets were discounted. The exhibits we saw were basically just Wikipedia descriptions glued on the walls. Was kind of disappointed until we saw the Kentridge exhibit. This was a breathtaking piece that flipped our attitude towards our visit. The mix of video, music, and stop motion was captivating.

Great venue, but beware the over zealous security guard. After paying $ to visit the exhibits, stepped outside and sat down on ledge to hail an Uber...and five seconds later the guard rushes out to tell me not to sit down...despite no sign indicating this. Most unfriendly experience in Miami so far. Thank you.

It is a beautiful building, a real Miami landmark. It is a must see. The first floor of the museum displays artefacts linked to the Cuban refugees that came to US in the 1960's. The second floor exposes local and famous artists, mainly linked on post-modern art. Definitely a great attraction.

A quaint museum with some interesting pieces. It’s free on Sundays and worth a quick stroll to check it out if you’re around the area. I wouldn’t go out of the way for this Muesum though.

Considero una falta de respeto al visitante que no se infome previamente que lo mejor de la exhibición NO ESTA DISPONIBLE AHORA. Las personas venimos de lejos y quedamos frustrados en un lugar con difícil parking para no poder acceder a lo prometido en la página oficial.

The staff was very inviting. We felt very welcomed. The environment inspires creativity we had fun doing our activities with the kids. The exhibits was well displayed and tge staff was very knowledgeable about the artwork and it's artist. I look forward to going back.

What I love most about Museum of Art and Design @ MDC is it's size. Some Museums can feel huge and overwhelming, but Museum of Art and Design @ MDC feels intimate and manageable. No need to rush around to see everything they have to offer. Being free is a nice perk.

The museum is a great experience. It is in the Freedom Tower, an emblematic Miami building wit 2 floor of viewing space for are etc. A winner

Great historic building and informative displays. I really wanted to go to the 2 floor exhibit as well however did not want to leave my bag at the counter. Looks cool though. Check out the mural of the map of the world. Very well done.

Not the best museum it should be titled Cuban art of Miami. There was very little to no design exhibits and only Cuban art. The art was nice but the venue needs up the ante and bring in some other artists and real design exhibits!

My family really enjoyed the exhibit The Body Electric and the scope and quality of it was mind-boggling. The venue at Museum of Art and Design is so big it makes and exhibit like this possible where it could never fit at Pamm

Small two floor museum but packed with modern artworks, in an artfully beautiful garden. Detailed descriptions of the artworks and synopsis of the artists’ lives are much appreciated. Not to be missed in Miami!

This museum of art and design also served as an entry port for Cubans and has a permanent exhibit of that time period. Interesting to understand that history period from the point of view of those people.

Expected more, but I loved it. Free on Sundays and free parking too. Not bad to stop by on a Sunday afternoon and you just want to disconnect from the busy streets.

This event was in the Freedon Tower. Well known to Cubans who immigrated to the US. It's the equivalent to Ellis Island for Europeans that inmigrated.

Awesome discussion about the betterment of Miami Dade county cities and surrounding neighborhoods. Would love to take my students on a field trip soon

This museum has interesting interactive map from 1400 to end of 1500 where you can see it's becoming more and more realistic over time

Really interesting and unique, only complaint is on the day we came, it was under construction so only 1 floor was open.
