I never post reviews, but I feel like my experience definitely warrants breaking that trend.  Out of desperation, I got in touch with Play to see if I could get a hold of an out-of-print DVD boxset. I was advised they didn't have it available, but they could take down my details in case they managed to track one down. Cynically, I didn't believe it would actually come to anything... Less than a month later though, my expectations were defied in the best way; I was notified they had sourced the boxset, and would offer it at a much lower price than I'd thought to boot. I finally went in today to pick it up and the team were very friendly and professional. I'm really terrible at remembering names, but you know who you are. Thank you so much for going above and beyond. I will definitely be dropping in again to have a proper browse the next time I'm in the city. I cannot commend this business highly enough.

Had an okay to expensive range on DVD’s and vinyls. However, my store experience felt particularly unsafe due to being followed throughout the store and particularly unsavoury and misogynistic conversations being carried on between customers and store employees. I also noticed that I was the only customer not greeted when I came in or asked if I needed any assistance and also the only woman. When I approached the register to pay, the man held a finger at me and made me wait while he carried on a 10 minute phone call before putting it on hold. It just wasn’t a very welcoming store experience from start to finish. Ultimately, I would not recommend the store as I felt unsafe and the experience unpleasant.

I've only shopped here online due to lockdown, but I've been very impressed with the breadth of the films available, including many imported and obscure gems. However, the truly exceptional feature of this store is the customer service on offer. I experienced a problem with one of my recent deliveries - it wasn't a deal breaker, but I was a little disappointed. However, when I voiced my misgivings to Rex, he personally drove to my house to hand me a pristine replacement and share his sincere apologies. I couldn't ask for better service, and you can be sure I'll shop here again.

I’m no film buff, so I will give PLAY the benefit of the doubt when it comes to movie selection. Walls are stacked ceiling high. As far as records go, they did have some rarer joints you don’t see elsewhere. But the prices were obscene (!) and inconsistent with other record stores or even Discogs for that matter. Feels like they’re capitalizing on Australians’ willingness to pay more for vinyl than they should, not knowing what stuff is really worth.

Best place in Melbourne to buy movies on Blu-ray and 4K UHD. They import region A discs, Criterion, Arrow and KL releases, and are most knowledgeable about what they are selling. I love going there, even just to browse what they have or chat with the guys. They also have a quite large selection of music on CD and vinyl. I only do digital. It's mainly used stuff, any genre. I couldn't recommend this highly enough! 5 stars!

The staff are an excellent reason to visit and support this small business. They are exceeding knowledgeable and helpful - if they don't have the title you want, they will look it up and make every attempt to get it. The prices are also another reason to visit; new releases are often cheaper than the big chain stores. They sell dvd, blu ray, 4k, cds and LPs. And have rare and hard to get titles. I keep going back

Fantastic store, great service and huge range of films. Unlike JB Hifi a lot of the movies they stock are rare and hard to find in Australian stores. They stock releases from distributors such as Arrow Films, 88 Films, Criterion, and other companies you would normally pay a lot of money for online (plus the shipping restrictions and costs from some online US or UK stores) and it's all at a reasonable price.

In a world of fast, rapid change. One of obsolence and pursuit of the newest thing or technology, this shop is a godsend. Sometimes JB-Hi-Fi just is not able to scratch that itch when it comes to the perfect dvd's. But this place manages it everytime I have bought many a dvd here, and they also have band t shirts, CD's, Vinyl, some of it original, and laserdisc if you feel that way inclined.

Really Cool Place! The store has an extremely wide collection of different types of DVD's and CD's. Ranging from 1950s B movies, weird to obscure films and music as well as a lot of more recent films and TV Shows. Whilst the prices aren't cheap they are definitely better than other stores and honestly you can not find most of this stuff any where else!

  • James Patrik

The last, great DVD & Blu-Ray store in Melbourne. These guys cater to both collectors and movie buffs. With an insane range of both new and second hand DVDs, I always make this place a part of one of my trips to the city. Love chatting with Brendan as well. Guy has amazing recommendations and his knowledge of film and tv is extensive.

Don't even know where to start. Abundant collection of films and music, huge diversity in what's on offer, my only complaint is I lose all self restraint when I'm flicking through your shelves. In particular I appreciate the rich collection of heavy music on vinyl, but lately I'm finding as much joy in the film sections too.

  • Scott Crawley

Quite possibly the best DVD store I've ever been to. Had a huge selection of local and imported titles, some of which were very cheap. Staff were absolute champs, very easy to talk to and have a laugh with. Highly recommended for anyone who visiting Melbourne that loves movies.

  • Bayden Revell (Arto)

One of the few gems left hidden in Melbourne. Excellent range and always something new to be found. Each time I've been Served by Gareth, who is an excellent customer service representative, has no issue striking up a conversation and an all round legend. Thanks Gareth!

  • Steven Dunn

This is always my first stop when looking at purchasing dvds. The prices are cheaper than you find anywhere else. And they stock hard to find titles. Dvds are a mixture of second hand or brand new. I've never had any major issue with thing I've purchased from here.

  • Dan Stevens

Excellent range of movies including hard to find ones and the music selection is also very good from the obscure to the uber_popular. The customer service guy was also very good, friendly ,knowledgeable on what they had and didn't have and not in any way pushy.

  • Justin Cooper

This store is fantastic! I always find gems on DVD & CD. There is so much here that won't be found on streaming services. The staff are always helpful & approachable. The store is always clean and easy to navigate. It's my favourite store in Melbourne CBD.

  • Aden Purcell

They stock awesome shít, lots of boutique titles and imports, however the owner is unresponsive to enquiries and their online store is neglected making it very hard to gauge what they stock unless you wanna sieve through the 622 posts on their Insta page.

  • T Ski

If you're a film or music buff this spot has it all, I had no intention of buying when I went in unless something at the top of my want list popped up & they did! Cult, horror, anime, art house, world cinema all very well represented & layed out.

  • Alex Pennini

One thing I don't like about the bigger chain stores is that they only stock what will absolutely sell at some point. It makes sense, it's a business but when you're looking for slightly obscure films or music, it makes it hard to find and

  • colin lacivita

Tucked away in the city just down from parliament station. I visit regularly and have picked up some amazing deals. Good prices. Staff are willing to help if you ask and will leave you be if you don’t. Worth the visit. …

Was only in melbourne for a few days but visited here twice because it was so good. I could’ve spent hours browsing the shelves. Ordered something online recently and it came straight away. Can’t recommend this place enough.

Best selection in Australia. DVDs and Blu Ray's includes imported products from USA and Europe. Arrow products to Vinegar Syndrome. Cult films to rare finds.

PLAY: The BEST Music and Movie Store in Melbourne! The best thing about this store isn't the extraordinarily low prices.
