Nice layout, wonderful food, reasonably priced but terrible service. I arrived with my girlfriend for lunch, we were given a booth to sit in as there was only two other tables taken (the other two booths). After ordering some food drinks (and paying around $70) we drank one each and went outside for a cigarette, when we came back in a local man had been given our seat and had a drink and cutlery in front of him, we weren’t approached about why this was so we chose another table and sat down. I went back up to the bar to order and thought I would ask why our table had been given away, to which the barman/waiter replied “I didn’t give it away, I’m here by myself, I can’t cant guard tables for everyone.” This was extremely disappointing as he seemed to be a really nice man at the start and unfortunately, if you’re a waiter, it is your job to ensure people’s tables aren’t taken, especially when there are plenty of other tables available. All in all the food and atmosphere was great, the waiter was nice too, however I couldn’t help but get the feeling he was too lazy to take responsibility for his mistake or try to rectify it.

The service was chaotic. Waiter had to come back confirm what the order was 10 minutes after ordering it. Then, it took another 30 minutes for it to come, only to find a plate of Eggs Benedict in which the toast, eggs and bacon were cold. Eggs weren’t runny as well. Only good thing was the halloumi. As for the other plate, the eggs on tast, it was also cold. This time, not only were the eggs cold but they were also completely boiled (they were supposed to be poached). On top of this, coffee was quite milky so very low actual coffee shot on it. All this for $54 and no apology. In my opinion, there was no excuse for this poor service as the place was only at 40% capacity by the looks of it.

Myself and three others wanted seafood and decided this place looked nice, we wondered why it was nearly empty on a Friday night but ordered food anyway. The staff were friendly and having fun, so much so they forgot to send the food to the kitchen to make which one of us found out after an hour when we enquired as to where our food was. In the hour after we ordered where not much was going on, it hadn't occurred to them to see where it was or remember to follow up. Very inept and we wouldn't recommend, makes sense why they were near empty. Appears the staff didn't have sufficient training or skills to effectively run the restaurant

We had a recent, awful experience at Phat fish. We chose them because they were the quietest bar on Salamanca Pier and that should have been our first sign. We walked in as people were walking out complaining. During the 25 minutes we waited for our drinks 3 tables got up and walked out without ordering . The mojito we ordered was basically a vodka soda. We then were told that the girl who delivered our drinks was not a staff member and because they were busy the manager just ‘got someone’ to deliver our drinks. When we questioned this the manager kicked us out because he ‘didn’t want to be questioned about his service.’

I have been visiting Tassie for the last 6 months and this is the first time I had my dinner in Phat Fish. I ordered the mussel which is on special every Monday and it was cooked perfectly, the mussels is so tender and full of flavour. You can select from tomato or cream based dish and both are worth trying for $12 each. I also had the Bloody Mary oysters and they are absolutely delicious. The oysters are small but it is full of tassie flavour in it. The seared pepper tuna is good but I guess I’m too full to appreciate it. I will surely come back here for another round of the Tassie Mussels.

Ordered the seafood basket. Large portion size but the quality and flavour was quite disappointing. Little or no seasoning was on the deep fried seafood and chips, there was a tiny container of tartare sauce compared to the amount of sea food and I didn't even get a lemon wedge which might have helped to improve the flavours somewhat. The side salad was a few sad looking lettuce leaves. For a water side restaurant that appeared to be all about seafood, it was a real let down. I was only in Hobart for 2 nights and regretted spending one of my nights eating here.

Avoid this place. It is dirty. Full of fruit flies. Dirty tables. They served us flat coke, it was brought to their attention and no refund offered. They did ask to swap out for another drink but has no sugar options available. The food was not bad but definitely not good. Way over deep fried to the point every chip was just crunchy. Very difficult to eat with a fork the chicken parmigiana was just similar, dry on the inside and soggy on-top like it was microwaved. Considering this was a $29 parmie I expected a lot more quality. Will not be back.

We really enjoyed our meals at Phat Fish today. We turned up without a reservation right on kitchen closing time (not intentionally!). The chef very kindly still agreed to take our orders. The Panko crumbed fish taco and grilled chicken and corn taco were full of flavour - delicious! My husband thoroughly enjoyed his Panko crumbed ‘fish and chips’. Thankful for the fantastic service as it was also my birthday and the first ‘date day’ my husband I have had since our 9 month old was born!

Second visit a few weeks later: Unfortunately our visit was not as pleasant as our first. The floor looked a bit greasy/unmaintained and our food was quite greasy, total opposite to what we had at our first visit. ------------------------------- First visit when it just opened: Food was very tasty. The place is brand new (just opened a week ago). Polite staff and very affordable. We will definitely come back! Thank you very much PHAT FISH! We really enjoyed the time we spent with you guys!

Very good bar/restaurant! Tuesday night and every table full. We had fish and chips, scallops and chips and tacos that were 2-4-$10. All very good, tacos especially! (halloumi and panko fish) Great selection of beers on tap and nice wines. Also alot of other menu items I'd have(crab burger) Good atmosphere with music and stylish set up throughout... Only thing stopping from 5* is wait for food(about 45min) Think place is new tho.. so if they can shorten the wait then 5* defo

One upon a time, I would’ve given this place 5 stars. But now, I definitely wouldn’t. Headed here for a drink on a Saturday night - place was completely empty. Their signature fish bowls are now pre-mixes that are sickly sweet and hard to drink. The staff were unengaged and kind of rude - hard to believe they’d be rude to us when we were the only people in the joint. Had our one drink and left. Huge shame - it use to be a go-to for us on a Saturday night.

  • Tony Dunn

Great place for a speedy lunch, service was very friendly and efficient. We had a very short time frame before boarding plane back to Sydney, group of 4 plus one child had our meals within 20 mins. Batter on the fish and chips was light and crispy, the calamari salad was delicious and plentiful, one piece of advice a circular bowl maybe for the salad to help scoop up the goodness Would definitely recommend, good work guys. See you next time

  • Richard M

We had dinner there and went back for lunch a few days later because it was so good. The food was fresh and well cooked, the staff were friendly, the atmosphere relaxed, and the service was at just the right pace to allow you to have a drink or two and have a conversation without feeling rushed. The selection of beer and wine was good, especially the local varieties. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Hobart!

  • K H

Ordered the tuna and a garden salad with haloumi. Overall cost me 41 dollars... I wanted all the items. However they forgot my potatoes included with the tuna and I find that strange, and kind of rude because I had to disturb my friend while he was eating his burger to ask for the other part to my meal. To be fair, not cheap and probably staff should be more attentive. Otherwise good food

  • Nicholas Bronson

Food is great, service is pub service, not restaurant service so be aware. About the only thing that stops it getting 5 stars though, ambience is fun, drinks are plentiful and the food is top notch fried seafood, perfect for a night on the tiles. Maybe give the cheeseburger croquettes a miss though. A bit gluggy and if the meat is seasoned you can't taste it over all the liquid cheese.

  • Trent Clifford

Why a restaurant that focuses on fish in their name and on the menu does not stipulate what fish they're actually selling is beyond me. Non of the party were overly impressed with any of the food that got served up. Best thing by far IMO was the fish nuggets for the kids, OK food to have with a beer but if you want seafood and good seafood go somewhere else. Service was great,

  • Simon Williams

Ordered the fisherman's basket, salmon sushi, and salt and pepper calamari. The sushi was fresh and very pleasant. The calamari was fine but nothing special. Unfortunately the fisherman's basket was plagued by being deep fried too long - almost burnt tasting, and the prawns did not taste the freshest. Service was basic due to the lack of serving staff. Would not return.

  • Jon Novak

Great food here, we were able to sit outside, but toward the end of the night the birds were a bit of an issue. It's a bar atmosphere, so no table service but as long as you like seafood you'll definitely be able to find something here for you. We had the seafood sampler which was just perfect for 2 hungry people, but could have fed 3 normal humans :)

  • Inneka

The drinks here are an absolute rip off. Came to happy hour for a 'signature fishbowl' thats recipe stated it had vodka, orange liqueur and blackberry liqueur only to be served a regular glass of lemonade with 1.5 shots of a premixed blue liquid. For 12 bucks I could have just bought a nice beer rather than an overglorified lemonade.

  • Barry Page

The fish wasn't fresh - I suspect that fish and scallops served were from frozen. First lot was sent back as it was like rubber - if the chefs had any integrity they would not have sent this out. Second attempt was more edible but still not great. Scallops were edible but mostly free of any flavour. Waiter was pleasant and helpful.

3.7. Nice fish cafe off Salamanca place in a heritage building. Pleasant and casual enough and well fitted out. Staff friendly too. I had a nice char grilled salmon with egg, Sicilian olives, egg, tomato, beans, rocket, cucumber, capers and potato. It was a good tasty meal and the salmon was particularly nice. Recommended.

  • Beverley C

We had the most amazing dinner one evening so returned a few nights later to eat here again. We were sadly disappointed as the live music was so loud we could barely talk. He was also over produced and a bit average to listen to! It really spoilt our night. If it wasn’t for this I would have rated this restaurant a 5star.

  • Patrick

This is a great place… great service and very clean and tidy. Food was great, seafood super fresh. You can eat inside or out on the street, we elected to eat outside and people watch. Good selection of beers on tap as well as the usual wine, sparkling and spirits. My only nit picking comment would be…. No dessert menu!!

  • WhoW L

The seats aren't family friendly, e.g the elderly and children will struggle to relax on the elevated benches. We had the oysters and were disappointed they stopped serving mussels. Only 1 staff was available on a Thursday for dinner time. I wouldn't say he was the friendliest or offered the best customer service....

  • Murray Herbert

Had a lovely family lunch here and were really happy. It was quite busy for lunch but the guy behind the bar was really calm, friendly and professional. They brought us a complementary bread as they were so busy which was nice. When the food arrived it was delicious and very filling. Super happy, will visit again!

  • BonitaxJxMarie

The most amazing hot apple cider and rum drink ever. Coming from Melbourne, we are spoiled for food choices but Phat fish has been amongst the top dining experiences we’ve had. Reasonable food , amazing cider and service and the Phat Chowder is worth it’s weight in gold. Would come back just to eat here again!

  • Bob Jones

We ordered the mixed platter and would highly recommend, although id probably ask for no extra/added salt next time as it was a tad bit too salty. Oysters were fire though! Really fresh, clean taste and the battered fish was just what you want, crispy outside, soft and melt in your mouth on the inside!

  • Mitch Follent

Heard about this place from the locals. Quiet night but got great service from the barman, served me a fine whiskey plus the best Flame Grilled Salmon I have ever had. All the flavours merged so well, cooked to perfection. Can't wait to eat here again. Definitely recommend.

  • James Coburn

Plenty of tvs, venue quite small so hard to grab a seat at times. Lost a bit of atmosphere once the footy had finished if you wanted to kick on and have a couple of beers post game. Great to have a sports bar nonetheless and im sure it will only improve. Bar food was good!

  • Jules Nicho

Very friendly service, great atmosphere! The winner was definitely the food, AMAZING fresh seafood platter. My husband who has been vegetarian for 3 years couldn’t resist the seafood platter! If you’re a seafood lover then the Phat Fish will definitely not disappoint!

  • Erica

Enjoyed a bottle of bubbles and some squid at sunset. Accidentally left my wallet behind and when I called up an hr later Curtis already had informed me he had sent me a Facebook message to let me know he had it. Thank you for the excellent service and honesty.

  • Grant Evans

Came out after along day with lots of walking. So we all wanted something simple. This venue provided that pub style meals with not to much fuss. We all enjoyed our meals, sitting in the outdoor area out front. Staff and service was good also. Thanks PF

  • Charmaine Sinclair

The fish portion was smaller that I'd have expected. The salad was boring with a very sour oil for dressing. We also had 2 x fisherman's baskets. Neither were good 1 had half cooked scallops. Neither meals were finished. Expensive for what we received.

  • Vicki Bell

We had some oysters and seafood baskets. Every thing was absolutely delicious. The calamari was the nicest I have had in Tasmania, and I am a local, battered oysters were delicious as were the chips. Their recommend drink was very nice as well.

  • jessie pp

I just had a meal here tonight, the meal was awesome and I love it!! I had a 12doz of oysters which was really fresh, a stunning pan seared scallops with a Seafood platter.. Staff was friendly, I will definitely gonna be back again soon.

  • Suzanne McGrath

A stunning meal at Phat Fish. The pulled lamb should on a bed of sweet potato chips was delicious . Crumbed prawns fresh & perfectly cooked. Great experience under the outdoor heaters on a chilly night. Great service as well. …

  • Cuckoo8ird

Honestly one of the best seafood lunches I've ever had and I'm not even a fan of seafood! Seafood here was very fresh and tasty. The fried items were not greasy and the Phat Fish chowder was excellent. Highly recommended!

  • Peter Gregory

Great little seafood restaurant in an awesome location. Food was really delicious and the portion size was perfect, not too small, but enough to satisfy. Friendly staff and overall great value for money. Amazing chips!!!

The food was all beautiful at good value - we had the porterhouse, grilled salmon and mussels. Although the service could be better by being more inclusive for people of colour.
