Best art museum in town! SAMA has a fab mix of contemporary and ... not... pieces, and a rolling calendar of great temporary exhibits Best part, the staff and docents are *way* less uptight than at other art museums in San Antonio (like, for instance, museums that rhyme w Nick Fray) Favourite piece is the sand mandala that the museum got special permission to keep intact (generally mandalas are created specifically to be scattered by the elements - an offering). LOVE the pre-Colombian section. Current temp exhibit is beer-centric - Still Brewing Art - thru 09.03.23. It's small, but very insightful, in the museum that used to house Lonestar Brewing The building itself is beautiful, and quick walk up the Riverwalk to the other great historic former-brewery, The Pearl, or down the Riverwalk to the historic VFW post and beyond. Quite a bit of parking available. Museum admission is free on Sunday mornings and Tuesday evenings.

Wow! The SAMA is awesome! It says art museum but about half the museum has historical artifacts and exhibits as well. I loved the Egyptian exhibit. There are 4 different floors. The Roman room was under construction when I visited. They had artifacts / history from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, Japan, India, and several others. Recommend planning for 2+ hours here especially if you plan on seeing and reading everything. Really nice architecture as well as it’s located inside the old Lone Star Brewery building. Only wish it was a little cheaper than $20 per adult (or had educator discount). Also the parking across the street is not free at $5 plus tax (came to $5.41 for me). Located along the river walk a few miles north of downtown and just south of the Pearl Brewery.

The museum is beautiful and well laid out. However, it is on four floors and the elevator in the west tower is closed down for maintenance. The floors are far apart basically limiting all access above the ground floor. Even though we asked about handicap parking when we bought our tickets, they did not mention lack of an elevator. I spoke to the young woman about the issue and she said sorry. I waited for others in our party and then walked into the East Wing through the gift shop. I looked around the first room and found an elevator which worked so I was able to see the whole East Wing. I couldn't believe the ticket counter girl didn't tell me that I could see the whole East Wing. Staff at the desk really need to know a little more than just how to take money for tickets. The museum itself is great. Allow a lot of time..... it's huge.

Amazing works in this place, the exhibits are rotated out pretty regulary. The website has only a portion of their displayed pieces. They have a skywalk with a beautiful view of the city. If you are an art lover or just hold a small interest in art, this is a wonderful place to visit. They have night events involving sketch sessions, free nights, and more. Check out their website for more info! It's probably a bit boring for young children, plus they get a bit loud. I would only advise it for older more mature children. Flash photography is explicitly not allowed. The art on display is unique, one of a kind, on loan and expensive, if you have no sense of etiquette you'll definitely not be welcomed here. That being said, i took a picture properly and a small girl saw, told her mother to take one of her with the painting, tapped on the painting and they both giggled. Big no no!!

We visited on a Saturday to see the special superhero exhibit. We only intended to visit and leave. We ended up staying over an hour and my children and I loved it. I was honestly surprised by how well received it was. It was spacious (I didn't feel like I was going to knock something over with my stroller), a lot to see, and they had interactive maps. Currently, per website children under 12 are free, they have special hours for local residents, and is a blue star museum. Parking is located across the street and you have to scan a QR code. Photos were encouraged and the children asked to come back. I can not see a reason not to.

The San Antonio Museum of Art blew me away, at first I did not expect much from the first exhibit of contemporary art, but when we went into the other exhibits it exceeded my expectations. They have many Roman, Japanese and Chinese, Egyptian, Polynesian, and other ancient civilizations artifacts there as well dating back as far as 5000 years ago. Two employees in particular named Gabriel and Andy Were super helpful and nice when explaining the history behind the exhibits. They were very knowledgeable of the history and the deeper level meaning behind the paintings and artifacts! We were only planning on staying there for less than two hours and were there for four hours as it was fascinating!!! 10/10 museum!!!

This was truly a big treat. Way bigger than what I expected and it will take you several hours to fully enjoy this multi level exibit. The building features everything from Egypsian, Greek, Asian, Pacific Islander, European, Latin American and contemporary art. The museum also featureas a sesonal exibit. It was $11 to park across the street. The building is very wheelchair accesible and yes theres even art in the staircases. Weare comfy shoes and take your time. Its been a very long time since Ive been to a museums of this size.

The museum is always a great experience for the whole family. I took the family on a Sunday morning because there's free general admission as well as on Thursdays. We paid to go see the Spain exhibit and it was amazing. Beautiful pieces and it wasn't too crowded when we got there. It did fill up quickly though. After an hour I sent my kids off to explore the museum and find something they liked there. What fun is an art museum if there isn't a bit of adventure involved? We spent at least 3-4 hours exploring the museum. There are some pieces being installed so there were certain floors and areas closed off. I can't wait to see the new exhibits.

If I had known better when planning for a single day trip in San Antonio, I would spend all my time at the San Antonio Museum of Art. The collection spans over 5000 years in history and comes from all over the world. In fact, to fully appreciate each and every item, I doubt if a week would be sufficient to cover the four-story twin towers of treasures. The entrance is plain and down-to-earth, but man, I did not expect I could find well preserved potteries of 3000 BC at this place (to put it at scale, that's 5000 years ago, versus the 300 years old Alamo/Missions). I wish it will continue to be well maintained, well protected, and well funded.

  • Snow Key

I was fortunate enough to go during the 500 Years of Spain exhibit and it was truly a once in a lifetime opportunity. The paintings displayed were extraordinary. And the regular collection is impressive. I love the variety of paintings and artifacts that can be seen in this 8 level museum. Technically it's four levels but there are two wings so 8 feels truer. On the Japan floor is one of my favorite pieces, a vase with cranes, the intricacies and craftsmanship are quite remarkable. Honestly, there are too many pieces that spoke to me and really stood out. I haven't been to all of San Antonio's museums yet but so far this one is my favorite.

  • Ramesh Moorthy

Fantastic museum with a mix of global, American and regional art. Loved the Rockefeller Latin American, Greek/Roman/Egyptian, as well as Asian collections. The building itself used to be the Lone Star Brewing Company, I believe? Gorgeous piece of architecture that closed before Prohibition and had various uses until becoming the museum in 1980 or so. There was a docent who was amazing in explaining the history of the building, the museum and surrounding area. Highly recommended.

This museum is absolutely absolutely WORLD CLASS! All of the pieces are authentic and period correct! 5000 year old Egyptian art and atifacts! And much more!! I thought I was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York! It was a truly beautiful and amazing experience. A very well kept secret in San Antonio. 5 stories high full of fascinating art and artifacts. NOT ONLY ART PIECES, BUT ALSO MANY MANY ARTIFACTS from: Ancient Egypt Ancient Rome Ancient Greece Plus art from the orient, Asia and Africa. I highly recommend it to whomever visits San Antonio tx. THIS PLACE IS A MUST SEE IN SAN ANTONIO TX

This Place is Amazing. Your Welcomed with Warm Smiles. The staff is Friendly, kind and stationed throughout the Museum with any information needed. The place was to Large for us to visit all Art exhibits. We are excited to come back. The Gift Store is well Organized with a Great Staff. There is an Elevator to reach the other Floors and also a Large in door Open Spaced Stairway. Directly across the street is Parking fir the Museum. There is also a Rent a Bike station in that Parking lot. The Restrooms are Big and clean. You will enjoy the Art Museum so much, no doubt you will Return.

  • Ali Saremi

From Egyptian art created 2000 BC, to modern Marvel art created in 2000s AC, there is definitely something for everyone to enjoy at SAMA. Museum has 2 towers, each with 4 floors, for different exhibitions. I really liked that they separated their collection based on region, such as Asia, Oceania, Texas and … Parking lot is located right outside the museum, but not free. This is perfect place to take your kids to on a weekend.

Recently went here with family in town after living in San Antonio for 16 years and was pleasantly surprised by the volume and quality of the exhibits. The displays primarily centered on historic Egyptian, Asian, and Greek art but there were also galleries for Latin, European, and Contemporary offerings. A fun way to spend a few hours staying cool and enjoying some art. Just a ten minute walk from The Pearl as well!

This museum is a must see when you are in San Antonio. The building is originally from the 1880s and it was a brewery. The museum has been here since 1981. And the collection is full of impressive pieces from throughout art history, antiquity to Kehinde Wiley and Montenegro! Plus the museum staff is very friendly and helpful and store is worth visiting for jewelry and gifts for people who have everything.

One of the most amazing art museums both architectural and art. This was the first museum I've visited in my 39 years of life that I am actually considering becoming a member. This museum even rivals those of Houston and Dallas. I was very impressed and I plan to return again to take it in a second time with some friends, and possibly a membership! This is a must see. Pro-Tip, buy a one day pass for the river shuttle and they will boat you all the way to the Pearl and then drop you back off in front of your hotel.

  • Michael A.

If you enjoy Egyptology, and ancient busts and statues this place has it, also has a nice collection of European and American/Texan art work. I’m not an art connoisseur but my wife enjoyed browsing the collection. I was not too impressed with the Wendy Red Star exhibit. Seems like there are richer American Indian art to be exhibited, but as they say art is in the eye of the beholder.

The museum was delightful. Well worth the trip. This collection of art and history felt well rounded, being from all cultures, well priced, and the presentation and lighting were expertly done. A bit of walking to be had, but plenty of space to sit down and rest while you enjoy. The contemporary art was fantastic and well worth seeing In person. The sand mandala was my favorite.

Well, the museum is actually nice, but I've visited it 4 times the past years, and well, this last time I visited was well the same as the other times, and well, most of the floors were close due to maintenence or under construction, over all I recommend it. I think the review will be higher when they open the sections that were closed the day I went. Here are some pictures a couple thinks they have.

We went specifically to take my 6 year old to see the Super Hero and Villians exhibit, and he loved it. It was a quick tour of statues. It took probably 15 to 20 minutes to get through it all, including pictures. We ended up going through the entire museum and seeing all the exhibits, and I was pleasantly surprised how awesome everything was. If you're military, it's free to get through as this museum is apart of the Blue Star Family. Parking was right across the street and only $5.

Beautiful architecture and design. Quite a large museum with 4 floors, so pick up a map at the entrance. SO many lovely pieces and a great layout. Because there wasn't a large crowd I was able to take many pictures. But I did not get to see the entire museum as I ran out of time! I will definitely visit again. The gift shop has great stuff too!

Visited the day after Thanksgiving. Parking in the front ran us $10. You have to use an app to pay but it covers you the whole day. The staff was very friendly. There is a map so you can find your way. I wish a lot more of the exhibits had more information than "head of a man" type of labels. Other than that, it was a great experience.

Being able to see items several thousand years old is amazing. The only issue is that it was difficult to take pictures of some of the exhibits due to the reflection of lighting on glass. Also the elevators seemed to be malfunctioning the day we visited. Maybe rain? So it wasn't very accessible to handicapped or those with strollers.

The preservation of history and cultural memory is always a commendable endeavor, and The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) not only accomplishes, but far exceeds that task brilliantly. The whole experience from the parking lot to the gift shop. The layout of the different gallery floors is tasteful and conveys a cohesive story of any given culture per collection.

I was lucky to come in to this place when it first opened. It has a small collection then, now 2021 finally the gentrification of the area has taken root and with that hopefully a growth spurt for this pretty museum. The benefits of the smaller galleries is the concentration of the works needing to be displayed. For now you can actually enjoy the entire museum after breakfast and enjoy a late lunch if you decided to see all it has to offer.

  • Robert Krock

We totally enjoyed this Museum amazing detail on old treasures like I've never seen before. S. A. M. A is awesome. It's twenty bucks to get in, but if you payed a penny too see every piece of art in that museum you would under pay. There is art from before Christ, art from the Orient, Europe, Texan, modern and contemporary. If your thinking about going plan on spending at least three hours in there and wear some good walking shoes. Great visit and the staff was really helpful.

The museum of art is very beautiful. It has two towers ,the east and west towers. It covers history all accross the globe. The Chinese , Oceania,Asia, America, the museum summarize all of the cultures. It also has a modern art gallery which is a treat for eyes. The sovernier shop in museum is good. Its on the route of San Antonio hop on hop off. A through tour of museum takes 2-3 hours.

The lay out of the museum is very organic and allows you to wander. So full of artifacts from across different time periods. Plus the way they have the Asian culture sections lighting set up make it feel like you are discovering something for yourself.

Very great place to view works of art. There is a huge variety of art, from paintings to pottery this place has a ton of things to see. The atmosphere is very nice as well, very clean. Nobody from the staff will be lurking around your shoulder when you look at anything either, which is very nice. Highly recommend going here! There is a lot to see and you won't regret it.

Wonderful place to see San Antonio's culture come alive. Had various historical era but when we went this summer level 5, 6, 7 were closed for construction. So we only got to see half of the museum , it would've been nice to receive a discount for the inconvenience instead, had to pay full price to see half the museum. Great place to capture the roots of culture here.

  • Christina Mantas

An Art FORTRESS, more than Museum! It'll take you at least 5 visits to see every gallery: There are galleries from all over the world, a sky walk, and special exhibits, as well as tours and lectures. Right now, there's an exhibit of art from Pompeii.

Wonderful floor layout, and nice little giftshop as well!

I've been to San Antonio a number of times over the year but this was my first time visiting the art museum. This place is amazing. Such a wonderful and diverse collection of art. Exhibits are professionally displayed across four different levels. Staff was very knowledgeable and professional. This is a "must do" item on your itinerary while visiting SA.

  • Clearly Colleen

This museum is okay but after going to museums in large cities this museum is kind of sad. I really wish it had more impressive art pieces and less art leftovers. San Antonio is a large city and should have a better museum. The "superhero" exhibit really could've used actual art from comics, some figure drawings and concept art. Disappointed

It's peaceful and hardly ever crowded! SAMA is an inspiring museum that all San Antonians need to visit when they can. Bring your walking shoes and have a coffee beforehand. The entire museum is doable in 1 hr, but you may want to stay for 2 or 3. You can buy tickets at the door.

We love to visit this museum. This trip was planned exclusively to see the Wendy Red Star exhibit, which was beautiful, educational, satirical, and awesome. Highly recommend. More

Beautiful special exhibit of American paintings and sculpture from the DeMell Jacobsen collection. Spent an hour just enjoying the range of styles from realistic to abstract.

A comprehensive Egyptian exhibit and so much more. This museum goes around the globe and has a beautiful Asian exhibit and much to say about Texas History.

Always a great place to see a sizable antiquities collection and some unique pieces, too. The Tony Parker Heroes and Villains exhibit was so fun!
