I'm not a Hindu, but my friend (who doesn't drive) is, and I often take him. I understand very little about the faith, but from my observations, and from chats with my friend, this place looks like it embodies all the virtues you'd want in a temple. It's clean and spacious, and the statues and other imagery are all meticulous in their design, colour, and adornment. One of the members of the Temple Committee, with whom I had a brief chat one time, said that it had "no negativity" and this seems to be true. It's also very popular with families, with people from babies to the elderly all there. And the musicians are terrific, powering away tirelessly on nadeswaram and thavil. There seems to be a real community here. We both of us like the canteen (I might not be a Hindu, but I can eat like one!) and given that it is run entirely by volunteers, the food is delicious: their dosai and sambar are worth travelling for.

Dear sir, temple staff harassing devotees to remove cap when praying. Been to many countries and visited temples, no such practices in any of the Hindu temples. If it's the practice here, at least put up sign to remove headress before entering temple. In temples, Sikhs and even priest wear a Thalapa. Have look through the last few days on various books and Google, there is not one place is stated as devotees are not allowed to wear cap or headress in temple. One of the committee was was rude to to say, " I don't deserve to be in the temple". He later apologize to me for the inappropriate comments. My peace in the temple was totally affected by the incident. Very bad experience. Attach is the photo of one member.

- what a lovely and peaceful place it is.. love it… - beautifully located in the arms of the mesmerising Dandenong Ranges just before Sassafras… - Recently renovated (completed in late 2021) and it looks outstanding now.. already seeking attention of massive pool of the public due to all of its qualities.. - Great place for meditation and for the Hindu rituals.. - staff are extremely polite, soft-spoken and always smiling n welcoming - plenty of car parking space in the premises and few more lots available across the street (be careful while crossing it) - last but not the least: the food served in their canteen is awesome and reasonably priced too..

My wife loved the temple. I, being an atheist and a food lover, went straight to the canteen. For the last couple of days, I've been having a craving for good, homely south indian food... So we decided to drive 75kms to come to this place... And was not disappointed! We ordered a variety of dishes... Masala dosa, rava masala dosa, idlis, onion utthapam and ghee dosa... Food was delicious, simple, not oily or spicy, and easy on the stomach. My compliments to the chef!

Sri Vakrathunda Vinaygar Temple was the first traditional Hindu temple established in 1992 in Victoria, Melbourne, Australia. Since then the temple has fulfilled the spiritual and cultural aspirations of thousands of Hindus in Victoria, Melbourne. Besides worship, the temple also participates in social justice programs in the main stream. Peaceful, Devine and Calm atmosphere at this temple Instantly relaxes your body and soul! Jay Ganesh!

This temple is a divine place for the seekers of peace and tranquility. Priests are welcoming and wise. The way they sing the shlokas and verses during pooja creates an awesome aura in the temple. Our family is planning to move near the temple so we can visit regularly. The management staff is also very nice. Not to forget the delicious and wide range of food at Sri Ganesha's canteen. Must visit for every one seeking blessings.

I am a visitor from UK. Visited with my Family and Grandchildren. Very pleasant experience of the divinity and the Sanctity that must have gone into the makings of this Amazing Temple. A must visit Another highlight was the visit to their Amazing Canteen, where an Super Tasty food is served with lot of love at minimal cost, compared to other south Indian canteens.

This is one of the best Gapati temples in Southern Hemisphere. You will be blown over by the Pooja performed by the priests and the devotion of people here. I witnessed the annual 10 day festival for Ganesha here where a special prayer is performed every day for these 10 days for Ganesha. It was one of the best rituals I have ever seen in my life.

  • Tu-Nhi Quach

Called this morning to ask to get prayed for had nothing but welcoming hands and offered to pray for em whilst I wa sin hospital, asked for my name and prayed for me and I feel awesome now, best in my life. I've had demons follow me which were my family and I feel they left. God thank them and wish to be in contact soon to give hanks and praise

Lovely Ganesh Temple, currently undergoing renovations Apr-2020. Temple is still open in temporary location within the same site. Parking can be a challenge on busy days, extra parking options available across the main road. Be careful of pedestrians when parking within the temple premises due to space constraints.Worth a visit.

  • Velama Annamalai

One of the earliest traditional Hindu temples to be built in Victoria, this temple is very cosy and neat, situated near the Dandenong Mountains. Very beautiful inside and well maintained too. Went for Chathurthi prayers in the evening- it was quite packed for a weekday night and there wasn't enough prasadam for the devotees.

Beautiful Ganesha temple. They have navgraha as well as Shiv ji and Durga devi along with Ganesh ji. Hanuman temple is at back of the main temple. Canteen is small but serves good food. They charge $2.00 for containers for take away. Situated in The basin surrounded by beautiful mountains and view. So peaceful …

This has been newly renovated, has a few additional structures and a new coat of paint. Very clean inside and outside. The temple cafe has lots of food varieties in their menu and reasonably priced. Though I have not tasted the food, I have certainly heard it is delicious and typical South Indian flavours.

  • Greatest Ever

Very nice temple. You feel the vibes and peace when you are there. The priest there is one of the most nicest person you will ever meet. The committee members are good and helpful. They are very down to earth people and treat everyone with respect unlike some of the other temple management personnel.

  • Srikanth Selladurai

Excellent temple. Although smaller than other temple in Victoria an excellent place to visit and pray. Very calm and serene. Recommend to anyone as i have been to many temples. This temple just had its kumbabishegam and is fully restructured. Has a good canteen to for vegetarian food.

  • Sonali

Beautiful temple but incredibly disappointed that more wasn't done to prevent the temple from being filled with heavy smoke during a pooja. In such a small area with so many people, young and old, who would have inhaled atleast a cigarette packet of smoke that day, myself included.

"A must go place in Melbourne". Ancient and historical place, build by Indian community, with the support of local government. The place gives a good insight of Hindu traditions. Worth visiting, as the vicinity of the Temple is surrounded by mountain range, which adds beauty to it.

  • Gan Ganapathy

Have you been there lately? It is now renovated (2021). The granite sculptures are unique for Melbourne, Australia. The same as the ones you see in South India. The temple and the priests are well organised. You will have a great experience to go on a festive day.

  • Gavan Robson

Absolutely beautiful there however couple of people weren’t happy that I was there but we are all the same inside doesn’t matter what nationality we are just because I want to believe in the same beliefs as you do but definitely I keep coming back great stuff

  • Iynkaran Natgunanathan

A great temple filled with spiritual energy...... and the very important thing is our traditions are followed in several aspects of the temple..... I think all Melbourne living Hindus should be thankful to the God and the people who are behind this....

  • Malathi Nadarajan

Wonderful atmosphere, for devotees who come from near and far. A nice quiet temple by Melbourne's standards, with plenty of spots to sit quietly. I would rate the food in the canter as some of the best South Indian / Sri Lankan food in Melbourne

  • Madhu Dason

A beautiful temple situated at the foot of the Dandenongs. Quiet and so very peaceful. A great place to sit, pray, meditate and leave the noise and the hustle and bustle of Melbourne life and find strength in yourself. ❤️ …

  • Ravio S

Please update the events on the website. We need to know what's coming up next. Also previously if you punch in the name in Google search it'll show up with opening times and happenings shortly which is very nice and helpful.

  • Subhash Sul

Facing the mountains and nestled in a quite serene neighborhood of Basin. I've been here a couple of times, neat and well maintained. Jai Ganesh, jai Ganesh, jai Ganesh deva, Mata jaki Parvati, Pita Mahadeva...

  • R V

Peaceful and i visit here regularly....... ....BUT ......as mentioned by others tne stupid tall thin man at the counter needs to be thrown out. He brings bad vibes to the temple. He is rude and arragont.

  • Sithy Hassim

We love south Indian food and wasn't dissapointed before. But this time it was a rip-off. Masala dosa had no potato curry at all. We'll never recommend to anyone. Same with other dishes we ordered.
