I should’ve done this review when my mom was here in 2016 but she passed away and that fell on the wayward. Then my brother-in-law was also in this hospital and he passed away last year too. Not that it was because of the hospital or anything like that but let me start off with...I’m very, very pleased with this hospital. I happen to be Catholic and it is a Catholic hospital, but also the fact that everybody was so kind and nice. My mom had mitral valve surgery and from the time my mom was there for 2 weeks because of symptoms to making sure she has the right surgeon, the care that was given to her before and after the surgery was superb. My sister & I took turns staying with my mom and guess what, we were even with her when she was at the ICU. I don’t think that’s allowed in other hospitals but when I asked them, they said, most of the time if patients have their family in the hospital with them, they recover quickly. My sister & I were at St Mary’s for about a month and they were very accommodating to us. We got to take care of my mom, I got to work remotely (free WiFi) and my mom eventually went home. However, she died peacefully in her sleep a month after. Fast forward to last year, my brother-in-law was in his stage 4 cancer and before he was sent home for hospice, St. Mary’s took care of him and our family as well. They moved him to a bigger beautiful room with lots of space and beautiful views. He was able to take in visitors who wanted to see him. There were no time restrictions for visitors which is another first not for me and my sister, we know the drill, but for our family and friends who’s not used to it. They provided the family with coffee, tea, donuts, pastries, protein bar, which is new to us too. That is a very sweet gesture. Last week, I was the patient, I had a total knee replacement and I was very happy to know that they haven’t changed. The nurses and the staff are all still wonderful, no visitor restrictions and I really really appreciate everybody that works in this hospital. Yes, it is old. Yes, it’s not as fancy as the newer hospitals but you get excellent care. I felt so special during the time I was here. My doctors are all affiliated with St. Mary’s and they all visited me during my stay. I’m all for comfort and care and this hospital provides it. When I go here, I get everything done faster so no long wait lines and I prefer that over a shiny, fancy hospital where your wait time is almost a day. Don’t ever ever change.

Generally wonderful attentive staff, but I wish a few of the ER staff would have more patient empathy. I came in at 10:30pm on a Friday with abdominal pain. It was my first time walking into an ER in the U.S. During my tests, a woman asked me to sign several forms regarding my bill. The bill was quite large and I asked her to explain to me how the charges were adding up. She impatiently told me they couldn’t tell me and raised her voice at me when I asked her for clarification. This exchanged happened a few times throughout the night. The whole process made me feel like they were trying to sell me something rather than look out for my health. I had hoped that ER staff would have had more training being patient with patients. I wish they tried to understand more how the patient was feeling - they’re in pain, want to take care of their health, but also don’t want to be left with a $10k hospital bill that they cannot pay and will run them into long-term debt. Having someone yell at you on top of that is not professional. However, the nurses here were excellent. They were so kind, friendly, and made you feel comfortable at all time. They really knew how to deal with patients and how to treat them when they’re going through a difficult and confusing time. One of the nurses who treated me told me she was working on her off day because the hospital was so overwhelmed. It was clear the nurses and staff really cared about the well-being of the community. The residents were also very kind, caring, and informative. I would highly recommend Dr. Bailey, who was able to diagnose my abdominal pain and give me clear, actionable next steps.

Came here for a routine mammogram, ENDED UP IN COLLECTIONS!!!! St. Mary's was nearby and in network, so that's where I went. I received a standard exam, but was told I needed an additional sonogram bc of dense tissue (NOT unusual, 50% of women have it). On March 9, I received a bill for almost a hundred dollars, even though this is standard preventative care that should have been free. On April 8, I was told my payment was overdue. Calls back and forth to both insurance and St. Mary's have failed to resolve the issue. By May, I was in collections. The exam wasn't even complete until mid-march, so they must have sent the account to collections at the earliest possible opportunity. This is both cruel and grossly irresponsible, as it is not unusual for insurance to take three or even SIX months to finish reviewing a claim (the time period I've been informed my appeal will require). I have never heard of a medical facility siccing a collections agency on a patient so fast, nor without any good faith attempt to resolve the dispute. I now receive weekly collection calls which cause me great anxiety and distress. My credit rating (which was spotless before I made the mistake of coming here) has been ruined. Because I was foolish enough to trust St. Mary's I now have a black mark on my credit that will take months or possibly even years to clear up. Yes, I've filed an appeal with insurance and am pursuing legal options but my point is this should have never happened. Learn from my mistake friends - DO NOT COME HERE IF YOU CAN HELP IT

The negative reviews you are seeing are an accurate reflection of how this hospital operates. I recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting St. Mary's Medical Center and I would strongly advise anyone to stay far away from this hospital. The emergency department was completely chaotic and disorganized. I found myself wondering if I was even still a patient as I waited for hours without any updates or attention from staff. One of the major issues at this hospital is the lack of charge or break nurses. As a result, the nurses on duty are often overworked and stressed out, which only makes the situation worse. The nurse to patient ratios have been alarmingly high, with as many as eight patients per nurse. This is well above the legal limit stated in California law, and it is clear that this is putting patients at risk. In August 2022, an article was published with the headline "Nurses at St. Mary's Medical Center say low staffing is jeopardizing patient care." Unfortunately, this has proven to be true and it is disappointing to see that nothing has been done to address this issue. Overall, I would highly recommend avoiding St. Mary's Medical Center at all costs. The lack of staffing and poor management is putting patients in danger, and it is not a place where you can expect to receive quality care. It is a shame that more is not being done to address these issues and improve the hospital's overall performance.

If you need an ER don’t come here - literally any other hospital in the city is better. They don’t have a lot of services I ended up having to go to UCSF the next day since there’s no woman services on site for ultrasounds. Plus, the nurses that were working were super uncaring and made me feel like I was wrong for asking questions about what medications, procedures, and next steps. They were more concerned with having time to laugh and be on their phones and any questions were met with annoyance. The only person that came to check in during the 4ish hours I was there was the doctor. She and the intake nurse were the only people there with a shred of empathy and warmth. In the end, the only thing of value was getting pain pills to help me get through until I could see another provider. Update: Never received a bill until the FINAL notice. I paid the bill and two days later got a message that I’m late and haven’t paid via text. When calling their payment team, I was told they need the receipt forwarded to them because they don’t have the record and I have to submit more forms for a zero balance statement. Not only was this hospital incompetent in their services but they also are incompetent in their billing departments. Worst healthcare experience I’ve ever had in my life. I will never go to any medial institution associated with Dignity Health.

The doctor who treated me were really kind but the other nurses tending other patients were rude and treated me as if I was just another homeless who was giving “hard time”. I would give a 2 star from that experience that nurse gave me but the doctor who treated was really nice and caring. All I did was asked the other nurse politely because I know she was busy if she can give me a pillow for my arm. Her response to me was with a rude looking, VERY annoyed face While annoyingly yelling at me “it’ll take few minutes” and I never seen her come near me again. Just let me know if you don’t want to help me next time, instead of letting me be in excruciating pain waiting for help from some nurse! I honestly never been in a hospital so rude to patients, not just me but the other Asian lady next to me too. It’s too bad UCSF and General was too packed that day because I would’ve gone there because they’re all so respectful and kind to all kinds of patients. If you’re a homeless the nurses from this hospital will look down on you and I’ve seen that with my own two eyes on how they treat them. I don’t want to come back here ever nor would I recommend anyone of my family or friends to come here. I don’t want anyone I know get a possibility of getting treated the same way the Asian lady next to was treated.

As a healthcare professional for over forty years and a prior employee of CPMC/Sutter, as well as a massive stroke survivor with over years of hospital experience. I was pretty disappointed at what I saw yesterday visiting my 92-year old mom with a broken knee cap on the eighth floor. The bedsheets were wet due to a poorly inserted cath and when I notified the staff, the woman who came in was rude and grumpy. She literally just pulled everything off the bed and tossed them one by one, onto the already wet floor. There was no remote for calling the staff during emergency or turning lights/TV on and off. The ceiling fell off the waiting area so we had to relocate to the lower floor. My siblings avoided calling about her due to rudeness over the phone. The bedside cart with drinking water was pushed all the way to the other end of the room and unreachable. My mom's arms and hands, as well as her mind, are perfectly functional. I don't think a Covid surge could justify all of the low nursing staff quality.

I arrived 40 minutes before my procedure (after being recommended to arrive 30 - 45 minutes early). But with long check-in and registration lines, few staff members to process intake, and numerous inefficiencies (e.g. computer systems crashing and having to be restarted 3+ times) the whole registration process took more than 50 minutes. I was then told (quite rudely) that I would miss my spot because I was late, even though this was not true. I had to explain the situation to at least 3 separate times to different staff members. They grudgingly slotted me in 2 hours after the initial appointment time. I hope this deeply disappointing experience, where staff blames patients for process inefficiencies, is the exception rather than the rule at St. Mary’s. Otherwise I would recommend everyone with an upcoming procedure here to consider other hospitals and facilities in the Bay Area.

During my last visit for a Cortisone injection, I did not have a very pleasant experience. The nurses were very sweet and attentive, but I had a problem with my Orthopedist Dr. Zucherman. He was very curt, quiet, and straight to business. This might work for some, but during the procedure I was shaky and nervous, and was not offered any reassurance or updates on what was happening to me. The lack of communication from Dr. Zucherman during the procedure made the experience much more uncomfortable and unpleasant. I’m sure he is a great Orthopedist and the procedure definitely helped with my pain, however his style just did not work for me. I want to put it out there for other people who maybe prefer a doctor with more compassion in their bedside manner.

My wife had a procedure scheduled at 6:30am and we were instructed to check in at 6am which we did. The prep took no more than 15 min but then my wife was left on the bed rails for more than an hour. At 7:50am I questioned the nurses, and was told the procedure was supposed to start at 7:30am and that the doctor/physician hadn’t arrived yet. I underwent the same procedure at a nearby facility a few months back and the whole process was a lot smoother. Anesthesiologist called the day before to walk me through the procedure; two nurses helped me check in and get ready in 15 mins; procedure started right after; and I was released in about an hour from my arrival.

This facility does not show concern for seniors, especially if they are dying. They will call the police if your family are trying to comfort a family member when they are dying. One nurse in particular was Beyond Rude. Not sure what her problem is. I wonder why she works there if she is not happy with her job? I would NEVER recommend this facility to Anyone. The Ordacity to call the Police and deny a priest from praying over a sick patient that’s Dying. The head nurse this evening is the one that chose to call the police and kick out a visiting family member. There are continuous issues with this head nurse that seems to be a miserable person.

  • Monica Martinez

Horrible registration process. No matter what you’re doing, you must register at the same office. The wait times are horrible. Only two people doing registration for the entire medical center. I waited close to an hour just to get a quick “walk-in” procedure. Getting from registration to the different departments it’s like going through a maze. Very time consuming. Completely unnecessary. Allow at least 1-hour for registration. Another 30 to get lost around the building and going to different floors for each procedure. At least another 30 mins for parking. Ugh! Disappointed.

I had surgery at St Mary’s and received excellent care by the medical staff in the surgery dept, The recovery room nurses , the medical staff on the medicine floor and also the wonderful 7th floor nursing staff , I was treated well with good nursing care along with dignity and respect . My surgeon Dr Ziyad Hannon was excellent and performed my surgery with care and expertise and his follow up care was over the top excellent care . I truly recommend St Mary’s for their continuous excellent and safe care

  • daniel joe oconnor

I had to go there to refill my anti seizure medicine because I couldn't find a Doctor in S. F. who would help me. They treated my very nice even though I am homeless because the DMV automatically suspended my drivers license causing me to lose everything and now live on the streets. I am 72 and sleeping in the cold, wet, filthy streets, losing my mind and life but the nice people at St. Mary's refilled my prescription, and treated me with respect when almost everyone else treats me like human trash.

I am scheduled for a XLIF spinal fusion surgery in 10days with Dr Kondrashov who I have confidence in and has been supportive considering my workers comp insurance chaos. During my visits to St Marys for X-rays and picking up med records I found the staff to be kind, helpful and knowledgeable excellent. So I’m going into my surgery and hospital stay calm and confident in their ability to care for me and this is a huge relief at a time like this.. I’ll review again after my surgery and stay.

Impossible to schedule physical therapy appointment. I needed physical therapy 10 years ago, but i was never able to get on the phone with anyone and schedule it. I even told them over voicemail these are the times im available please just get me scheduled they never could. Fast forward to now im having the exact same problem with attempting to schedule physical therapy there. Don't wast your time with St Marys if you need physical therapy even if they are the most convenient location

  • Harold Elliot

I was a patient at St. Mary's a long time ago. I was really sick, and I spent most of December there that year. I was a student at University of San Francisco, so I was far from home. The doctors and staff went out of their way to make me comfortable, and I had a great holiday season despite being very sick in the hospital. I have always looked back on that period of time with fondness despite the inconvenience of dealing with my illness. They really did make me comfortable.

  • От Первого Лица

The emergency room is a disgusting place. Here, instead of helping you, either they will harm your health and you will lose healthy parts of the body, or they will not provide any help simply by measuring the pressure and keeping in line for 5 hours. The bill for this will reach several thousand dollars. If you want to save your life and money, avoid this place, because people are bullied by slow staff and bash patients with long waits and lack of professionalism

  • Darrell Simon

This is a great small town Hospital in a big city. Unfortunately if you have certain types of problems, the government has made it impossible 4 doctors to treat you. I'm a little ambivalent about leaving a good review about my recent trip because I feel like I was shoe horned into treating what was the secondary condition. A bit regarding treatment options. I really wish the doctor simply said I can't help you. Other than that everybody was great as usual!

  • Meagan ADELLE

My boyfriend's grandad was admitted here after a tragic stroke that left him in need of therapy to regain use of his legs and right arm. This medical center is calm and quiet. Also parking is free on nights and weekends which is a relief in SF. They make the rooms more of a comfortable stay. He will be released tomorrow after 36 days of constant treatment, so thank you for everything you have done to make him comfortable and get that smile back!

  • Stacey Carder

Caring staff, quick appointment. One note and it’s not a big deal: I asked to wear my cloth mask over the surgical one they gave me (I’m trying to double mask in confined spaces) and the front office staff said ok but the nurse said I could not. No tension-all completely fine-but everyone needs to be on the same page and it would be great to offer patients two masks if the preference of the hospital is to have patients where surgical masks.

  • CJ Babb

Went to the ER with an anaphylactic reaction due to tree nuts. Not a single staff member checked the severity of my throat, which was closing, even though I requested a nurse to at least look. Last time I had an allergic reaction, I was in another city and the nurses had debated on whether to put a breathing tube in me bc of the severity, so to not even have a single staff member at least look at my throat seems incredibly irresponsible.

Unfortunately in the last year is been very sad to see the poor quality of dedication and customer care. My mom is 74 years old and she has been coming to the clinic for 15 years. She complains that her appointments got cancel few times, she doesn’t get the right help cuz she is Spanish speaking I mean before they used the blue phone for interpreting. Hope it gets better. Thank you.

  • Johnny Welch

Great care. Great staff. Showing up for my surgery, everything was on time and everyone was so nice. Met by very nice man who took me back to or area. Was so friendly and even got my wife a pillow so she could be comfortable in waiting room. Dr. Feldstein and Brooke are fantastic and kept me informed at every step of the process. Will def repeat if I have another procedure.

  • Nicole Haddad

Eric and Mary in the ER were awesome! I came in pretty scared and they were so helpful and compassionate. They were so patient too. The nurses Dolly and Mary and Dr. Gupta were amazing as well once I got admitted to the hospital. They do everything they can to make sure you are comfortable and understand what is going on. Thank you to everyone so much.

  • Carina Mifuel

Came through for sepsis/kidney stone blockage. Amazing ER and acute care! Kudos to Dr. Ko, Dr. Jin and Dr. Jalife Bucay especially. Incredibly kind and compassionate staff. Warm blankets everywhere! Definitley won my trust for future emergencies (and I pretty picky about hospital care if you've seen my other reviews) Kept my socks to remember my stay.

  • Jesse Darko

My first time going there was frustrating coming from Kaiser where things are clearly labeled and places are easy to find and there are directories everywhere. But after some changes and more help staffed throughout the place coming and going to st Mary’s is much easier and the staff is very helpful and kind. Doctors are well informed and efficient.

  • Donna Marchesano (La Donna Marchesa)

The staff at St Mary’s was efficient, attentive and kind. It’s never easy when you have to go into surgery, Dr Van Warmaden is an excellent surgeon and her staff is focused on having strong communication with her patients. I felt safe and well cared for during this difficult time. St Marys staff Is the best part of St Mary’s hospital.

  • Stephen Allen

They were very rude last night & treated me like a second class citizen.. I came in because I had fallen & knocked myself out for about 45 minutes. They didn't even have a wristband on me & started having me sign documents & asking how I was going to pay for it. The only good thing I can say is that it's not as bad as St Francis

  • Laurence Oppenheim

I highly recommend St. Mary’s Medical Center Outpatient Services. Support staff is friendly and professional. My two hand physical therapists Jennifer and Kayla are wonderful. I actually first came to this department in 2013. St. Mary’s has a wonderful atmosphere, and it is my favorite medical facility to visit.

  • Phyllis Nabhan

Very professional staff. Doctors, nurses, and all personnel very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and caring. The hospital had sophisticated and modern equipment, it was clean, and well organized. It was a difficult procedure, but a good experience. Thank You St Mary’s Hospital for taking such good care of me.

  • Vicky Farmer

I have anxiety about going to the ER. I always ask who is the doctor due to the way I was treated by Dr. G (I don’t know how to spell his name, but they called him Dr. G). My experience was great, the drs and nurses, even though I am in the ER, the energy was awesome! One of my best experiences ever. Thank you!

  • Papa Yaw Q

First time visiting this facility and my experience was pleasant. Dr. Ryan Cudahy demonstrated a high level of understanding of what was going on with my hip pain and recommended some prescriptions. I’m looking forward completely healing to write part 2 of this review. Stay tuned!

Kentfield rehab is the worst facility I've ever experienced. My brother was in there for physical therapy it was supposed to be everyday. He got it once a week and when I called the director to talk to him he never called me back.Do not being your loved ones here you'll be sorry.

  • Sergio Hernandez

My podiatry appointment with Dr. Starratt was outstanding. He and the student took excellent care of me. The exam consisted of a thorough examination of my feet, toe nail trimming as well shaving down the calluses on my feet. My feet felt wonderful after the appointment.

  • James Gee

Registration was quick and fast for X-rays. Everything Wawa’s done in less than an hour. I must’ve gone at the right time and day about 3:30 on a Thursday afternoon. Only reason I didn’t give 5 stars was an employee didn’t have their nose covered by mask just the mouth.

I have Mixed feelings— the Supervisors, staff, and resident doctors don’t seem to communicate well for the patient. As a patient I have found parts of what my doctor and I discussed missing from the summary, affecting future orders and recommendations.

St Mary's consistently has provided caring and skilled medical professionals and staff. The only caveat I would add is that the building is outdated and in need of replacement or renovation.
