Going to the movies is not what it used to be anymore. Took the kids to the movies for the first time in about 2 years. Understandably, the pandemic has changed so many things for so many businesses. The delicious whiff of fresh, warm tasty popcorn no longer lingers in the air at the Cinema. Instead, the popcorn is pre-packed into bags and each person is rationed with 2x individual spice sachets for the popcorn bag. At least they still had the popcorn tubs on display so once could still show and explain to the little kids what it used to be like. Best to book everything online including the snacks too, especially the snacks too and save yourself unnecessary queues. One collection queue straight at the snack counter will get your snacks and the tickets. It's shocking that the prices of the tickets and snacks are that expensive! We paid about R650 for 2 adults and 2 kids and that was with the Vitality discount. How do families afford a regular trip to the movies? It seems they don't. So if not the pandemic itself keeping one away from the movies, the prices definitely scare one away. At least the movie itself was absolutely fantastic. Sing 2 was a lovely, lively, family movie that we all enjoyed and made the spend worthwhile for this once in a while experience. For the rest of the time, Netflix in the comfort of my own home on my big screen with my own freshly popped popcorn will work perfectly as well, if not better.
Shocked and disgusted at the way my partner and I were treated at Blue Route Ster Kinekor. After struggling to book a ticket on the terrible Ster Kinekor website that keeps crashing and freezing for no reason, we finally managed to get our tickets. Unfortunately, because of the bad online booking service, the wrong time slot was booked. We arrived at the cinema, and the staff was not helpful or understanding at all, despite us explaining what happened. We spent hundreds of rands on tickets and the manager did not allow us to enter the cinema. We were not offered a refund for our purchase, and management basically told us "We can't do anything to help you". We were not offered a voucher to make up for the money spent and lost. We were not given permission to enter our cinema. We had to sit outside in the lobby. My partner was sobbing because of the money that we lost, as well as the long trip we made to make it to the cinema. The staff was very unfriendly about the situation and the manager did not bother to explain properly why we could not be refunded, or why we could not simply be moved to the appropriate slot. This is no way to treat loyal, paying customers. Myself, my partner, our families and our friends will no longer be supporting your establishment in any way whatsoever.
Air conditioning was barely working, if at all, in cinema 6. My girlfriend and I endured uncomfortably hot temperatures in this IMAX theater. The heat made it difficult to focus on the movie and after asking someone for assistance, there was minimal improvement, if any. I thought that perhaps it was just us feeling the heat, but seeing a few guys walking out 3 hours later with actual sweat patches down their backs, just confirmed that we had all experienced a light sauna whilst trying to enjoy the new AVATAR movie. It was an evening screening, so outdoor heat was not an issue, and this was not during load shedding either, so there was really no excuse to pack a cinema full of people and provide such poor ventilation. I think it's unacceptable considering the price you pay for a premium experience like IMAX. It's really unfortunate but I would be hard pressed to go here again. Oh and just a suggestion that you allow customers to collect the 3D glasses by the entrance of the theater. Because having to wait for 30 minutes in the confectionery que to retrieve glasses and effectively missing the intro to the film, was no fun either.
Went to the opening night of Avater, movie switched off 4 times in total. Movie started playing in 2D(we payed for 3D Imax). AC was off and it became unbearably hot and stuffy. No one came to apologize or explain why the movie kept stopping. More than half the people just left the movie because they were so hot and annoyed. After the movie ended I asked the manager if we will be compensated for this horrible experience and she was so rude and said we got to watch the end so that's our moneys worth and she has had enough of this night and her boss and her had a fight and she said she came Into our movie and explained what was going on(this never happened). She said it's not her fault that there were only 3 staff on for the night... It's opening night of Avatar and there are three staff members there, what if there was an emergency? So she said she won't give anyone a refund or a free ticket. This is just not right Ster Kinekor please correct this.
I am utterly disgusted in the way me, my sister and her friend were treated at blue route ster kinekor. We arrived there and were informed that we that they do not take cash payments only card, none of us had a credit card. My sister and her friend then went to buy popcorn so we had something to eat during the movie. As the movie was about to start two employees came to the three of us and said that we weren’t allowed any of the food we brought in and then confiscated all our bags, including the bag with my money and phone in it and they even threatened to take our waters. During the movie it was very clear that others had brought in their own food and none of them were approached by the employees. I personally believe that we, as minors, were taken advantage of and as a cinema that claims to be “good for kids” I am shocked in how we were spoken to and treated.
Worst experience ever. Bad service, terrible,I am completely disappointed with the service at blue route sterkinekor, wen to watch a movie no sound then still spoiled the movie for the entire theater, then I got a re-administration which I did not want, could of made another theater for the same movie in imax offered to pay my difference, still felt I had to pay nothing and they couldn't even help me with that, my popcorn, my slushi was completely ruined, I worked whole week and I still worked after hours at home and decided to relax Friday, a complete disaster, the bosses of this company has no customer care at all, they are greedy people only worried about there self, I will bad mouth this whole cinema to everyone I know as this is unacceptable the problem was not fixed and everything was in ruined.
I'm a great movie lover and have been going to Ster Kinekor for over 18 years! On Friday night I took my two teenage daughters on a date to the movies. They packed their own favorite snacks at home and brought them with. Long story short, their bags were confiscated before going in, which they understood BUT a lady who sat next to us had a Whole box of chocolates and large bag of Lays!!!! How on earth did they miss that at the door??? I felt so sorry for my girls who were so excited but ended up with tears of embarrassment! After 18yrs, this was definitely my last visit to the cinema. May I also add that I feel the tickets are ridiculously expensive and their snacks are a complete rip off! My one star rating is only for the cleaning staff who were so friendly.
I made an error & booked online for wrong show time, called customer care, explained that I was going to re-book & pay again for same seats, tickets etc. but for later show. They told me to please send email to request refund, which I did, only to have them refuse the refund stating "cancellation needs to be made 3hrs prior to screening." When I asked them how on earth that is even possible if I only booked 1hr&15mins prior to the show, the answer I received was "you wont get any refund" So R810 down the drain. Incredibly disappointing that Ster Kinekor have resorted to stealing money from their loyal patrons, they really must be struggling financially to stoop this low.
Went to watch Avatarv: The Way of water on Friday the 16th. The movie stopped multiple times, and at some stages it changed to 2D from 3D. There was no explanation as to why they had to stop the movie multiple times and during the movie no staff could be seen in the cinema to ask answer any questions. None of the staff offered an appropriate apology after the movie. No refunds or completely tickets where offered because "we got to see the end of the movie" in the words of the staff present. The movie ended close to 45 min late due to all the stops and starts. Considering a ticket is close to R200 with the glasses, having an experience like this is just not acceptable.
Bad experience! Firstly they make you queue for the 3D glasses in the long line for the popcorn, even if you don’t want snacks.. very unnecessary long wait! Then Movie went off twice.. once 45mins in, and they restarted the movie from the very beginning again until I complained. Then went off again for loadshedding, despite them saying they have backup power and loadshedding won’t affect the movie. Then when they eventually got it back on it was in 2D, not 3D. 2:15 hr movie ended 45mins late.. taking us to 23:30! Babysitter not happy either as even later for them to go home so late. Very frustrating experience!
Visited Ster Kinekor recently. The lobby was almost empty and this was on a Saturday. The guy scanning the movie cards can be strict and will often search peoples bags so if you feel uncomfortable with that its best you don't bring your bags along. Cinema was fairly small however I applaud Ster Kinekor for bringing down the sound in the cinemas, the sound is a lot softer then when I last came in 2019. Prices have climbed since the pandemic and become less affordable however it is still affordable to go once or twice a month. The overall experience was fantastic and has gotten a lot better since the pandemic.
3rd time I've been to Ster Kinekor Tokai over the last 2 months and EVERY time there is a wrap around queue for collecting snacks? Why? The packing of the popcorn is what takes the longest time, so why not pre-pack 100 units and put them in the warmer cabinets so that you are ready for the rush? I stood 30min in the Q prior to the movie, gave up and went back out 30min after the movie started and there was still a super long Q...Management need to step up their game and think outside the box...clearly the the collection method is not working P.S. Manager was standing watching the long Q...
I’ve always loved coming to Ster Kinekor blue route. The people are lovely, the service is amazing and the cinema itself is ergonomic! The one issue I have is the IMAX 3D glasses. I bought a pair two weeks ago and the used that same pair last night but it didn’t seem to work? I then had to leave the cinema and buy a new pair of glasses. Not entirely sure why I had to do this also cant imagine the environmental effects it had regarding the plastic production? Shouldn’t these glasses be reusable and shouldn’t Ster Kinekor advertise this? Otherwise, this is probably my favorite cinema :)
Decided to pop in for a movie but was quite hesitant as the last movie experience at Cavendish was terrible. The popcorn was old and chewy, the buttersalt spice was horrendous and the Coke was flat ... this time around at Blue Route, waaaay better!! I can only think that there may have been numerous complaints about the buttersalt spice (prepackaged now) because it was back to its usual amazing taste! The popcorn was fresh and crunchy and the Coke had ample zing to it! All in all a very good experience which I hope will continue going forward.
Absolutely fantastic cinema! Had a great time going there, staff is friendly and assisted us throughout our visit and the self service machines are simple to use even though we booked online. What wasn't ideal was the extremely loud sound which sounded like the speakers were chainsaws. Secondly there is a long line at the food counter and they seemed to be understaffed there. The vibrations from other cinemas also interfered with the viewing experience in your theatre ,however overall a good visit 7/10 would go back again.
Watched Tenet on IMAX last week and whilst the picture was amazing, the sound was far too loud (experienced this with 1917, too). After the first excruciating scene, I ran out and asked the ushers to put the volume down. I think it was lowered slightly after I asked, but it was still too loud and dialogue was often difficult to hear because of it. It is not necessary to crank the volume just because it's a bigger screen - and you're going to damage a lot of people's ears if the volume issue is not addressed.
The vending machine at Blue Route Mall took our money for popcorn and drinks. But there was no juice available at the counter. We asked for a refund but the ladies were not very helpful and asked us to apply for a refund. We were adamant until they called their Manager. He was very helpful and without hesitation credited our card. Well done to him. Ster Kinekor need to make sure they have stock if juices. I just forgot to ask the Manager's name. Other than that all was good. The movie 'Elvis' was very good.
I love this theatre because of the layout, how close it is to the parking space, the selection of snacks, cleanliness and appearance. My only gripe is that I waited a long time to buy my snacks only to be told I had to purchase them at a self-order counter and then take the printout to the snack counter, which was a waste of time, there needs to be a better way of letting patrons know than a blue and white sign among other blue and white signage/branding that was facing the wrong direction.
AVOID - Manager is unprofessional- the one with the missing teeth. Like a real scroff with no customer service During Loadshedding went to see Avartar 2 (3d) the movie had so many issues and did not play in 3D because of all the problems people walked out and left. Loadshedding caused some complications but I really want to still support the movie house. Local security arrived for the angry crowd that developed and Ster Kinekor after numerous mails, has not responded to refunding my money.
We enjoyed last night immensely, everything was great and despite all the COVID nonsense protocol, the young man that did everything, from welcoming us in, taking our temperature, got our individually packed popcorn baggies, salts and drinks, to the almost empty theater, we had a great time. It was sad to see that on a Friday night, the cinema was empty! I wanna encourage folks to go again! The movie theater is such an awesome place to go, and youngsters, it's a classic date night. Love it
The only reason for the 4 stars is the fact that the process is prolonged. You pay online still have to stand in line. Why not have a machine to scan your QR and you on your merry way. If you didn't purchase snacks online along with your ticket, like me then you have to stand at another machine to order, then another long line to collect your snacks. What a waste if time. Otherwise the movie was aweskne my kids enjoyed it. The theater is always clean and the staff are helpful.
FIX YOUR WEBSITE. Today, I lost almost R400 because the website crashes and freezes so much and is such a nightmare on mobile that the wrong time slot got booked accidentally. Blue Route staff refused to help and would not offer a refund for the incorrectly booked showing, nor did they offer to move our slot. Your website is horrible and cumbersome, and your refund policy needs to be re-evaluated. Blue Route management was rude and uninterested in helping us. 0 stars.
I took my dad to watch Elvis on Saturday 30 July. The movie itself..amazing...went to 16h00 show.Unfortunately we just walked in and we love watching trailers and the alarm tripped and i went to complain..I understand these things do happen randomly...However the alarm rang through 4 or 5 trailers. So we missed what we might want to watch in future. No compensation was offered or even apologies. It won't stop me coming back, but I was a little disappointed.
It was very empty, but the staff greeted everyone that arrived with a smile, temp check and a hand spray. They directed us to where we needed to be and informed us of the safety protocols that they/us had to follow while here. Once in the cinema we were all spaced out correctly and even ran an info reel about how to exit the cinema while keeping safe distance. All in all a great experience and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
The 3D IMAX is epic. The screen is massive, and the picture quality was superb! The seats are big and comfortable, the most comfortable cinema seats that I've had the pleasure of planting myself in, other than the theaters with the recliners. We went to see Spiderman recently, and the experience was epic. My friends had to get the newest 3D glasses, as their older ones didn't work, and caused a lot of blur. Food for thought.
Ster Kinekor customer care could easily be replaced by a bot. They don't even try to help you if you make a booking error. They simply read from a rule book & refuse to refund you if you accidentally paid for same tickets twice. Their online booking system is also a joke. Ster Kinekor desperately trying to survive but ultimately will fall just like Blockbusters et al because they value profit over customer experience.
What a terrible slow experience at sterkinekor blue route collection ... only 2 cashiers serving refreshments... standing in ques for more than half an hour. I've never seen this kind of service before at a cinema complex. We.come to the movies to relax..pay huge amounts of money.. for the tickets.. not to stand in long ques for hours. Don't you monitor how many tickets you've sold.. and get your service in order.
We walked into an empty cinema, we had half a bottle of water that was opened at a restaurant, and we were told we could not bring it inside. If it was loads of snacks we got somewhere else maybe, but so super petty for half a bottle of water. Definitely not coming back, seems like lots of people not coming back because the cinema is empty for a movie that was released yesterday. Poor poor poor
Went to watch 9h15 movie with my teenage daughters on the first day of the school holidays. Expected it to be busy and full of kids but it was dead quiet. Loved it! We had the whole cinema to ourselves. Wish it was like this more often but expect it was just because we were there early on the 1st day of the school holiday day. The staff were awesome, the cinema was clean. Had a great time.
I've been several times to this cinema - actual theater is always clean, food on offer is always fully stocked but a little on the pricey side! Usually most recent films to watch The self service kiosks are always 50/50 - often they are not working properly and you have to go to the front desk to collect tickets that you bought online. All in all typically a good experience
The volume was so loud in the IMAX screen that it hurt sometimes. They also played a 3.5hour film with no break at all which is not the industry standard and ridiculous especially when paying top dollar at 200 ZAR per ticket. Also they do not accept cash at all and the customer service do not care to help with simple problems. It's no surprise that the place was empty
This Ster-Kinekor Cinema is Awesome, The Staff we’re Very Friendly and the New IMAX Theatre was Awesome. It’s also one of my Favorite Ster-Kinekor Cinemas ever in Cape Town. But in February, I enjoyed “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” in IMAX, but the most parts of the movie was shocking and it made me scared, but still an Amazing and Awesome Movie!!!
Considering lockdown restrictions they still bring cinema to us with all the trimmings, read popcorn and cool drinks. Their online booking system works very well and if one has a query there is a call centre that provides assistance. Just note the times they are open. Sadly, the cinema is only open over weekends.
I watched a movie in their new IMAX cinema. Was a bit skeptical at first, but when the movie started, I loved the picture resolution and crystal clear sound. I will definitely go back. If you haven't experienced quality sound, then I will suggest to spoil yourself with a popcorn and go watch a movie in the IMAX
Bought the IMAX glasses before going in to watch Avatar, which were broken when I unwrapped them as the movie started. Then after the movie (spent constantly readjusting the glasses, which rather detracted from the experience) there wasn't a single employee there - just doors open to the back, but nobody there.
I saw The Super Mario Bros Movie on opening day. Unfortunately, the 3D effect was not applied correctly, and the screen image was blurry all the way through, which made it almost impossible to enjoy the movie. With or without glasses it was a complete mess and nobody even bothered trying to fix it
Staff are friendly and willing to assist. Theatre was nice and clean. There are seats open between every person to ensure social distancing - which also ensures that you have your own armrest. The sound in the movie was a bit deafening and may need some attention. Overall our experience was good.
What to say, except that Ster Kinekor has a less than appealing experience, from try to just order water online to searching my bag for ? Um? Corona? Really? A mom, with two kids? Since when. We've been supporting businesses like Ster Kinekor through Corona, but it's not a two way street.
To the manager or owner of the Ster-Kinekor movie theatre. I hope you don't mind me sending a review about the business. It is a place were customrs and vistors go and buy a movie ticket and then go to one of the movie theatres to watch a enjoyable movie. And also to enjoy the venue..
R490 for 5 tickets and another R435 for popcorn in a paper bag, some cool drink and some chocolates, that all together probably cost less than R100 in a normal shop. You people should be ashamed of yourselves to charge normal South Africans these prices. I will never be back.
We went to watch Paw Patrol a the kids loved it. Clean and neat. The only thing that was not great was that some kids had cash and they couldn't buy popcorn and coke so I paid for them with my card. If I was not helpful then they and you would have missed out which is silly.
Literally the best movie experience, the management is super helpful and address issues that aren't their fault in a professional and expedient manner. The staff are helpful and friendly going above and beyond to make the experience a pleasant one for both adults and kids.
It’s not cheap to take the kids to the movies. Was very disappointed, the cinema had not been cleaned from the previous movie and the toilets had a terrible urine stink! Apparently the 1 cleaner fell ill, but surely you should have more than 1. Not very good management.
Ster-Kinekor is really great the staff are kind & generous & helpful. I would just like to thank the staff for helping me, you don't find that very often. The cinema is awesome & it's really cool to watch movies here the atmosphere is welcoming & so are the staff.
Swift service is always experiences at this Ster Kinekor. The cinemas are always clean and smell fresh when you enter it. More staff just need to be on duty during busier times because it always seems like they short staffed at the Popcorn and Snacks section
The post-covid management of the theatres is very comfortable, but volume is often too loud. Be certain to bring your credit card if you didn't book online, because everything (including refreshments) is done through the web portal. No cash options!
I am sure everyone knows to get to the movies about half and hour before the time as if you need to get popcorn lines can get long and employees do the best they can to get everyone orders done quickly. Employees are very helpful as well.
Really one of the best movie experiences I had. The screen was clear, the lighting was great, the combo package was great, the seating was comfortable and the help/service was great. Definitely will recommend the blue route imax theater.
Always a blast to visit this cinema and the fact that they have a variety of screens to choose from in 2D or 3D or IMAX makes it that much sweeter. If I must take one star away it will be for the price of their popcorn combos lol
IMAX experience was brilliant as always. Unfortunately the queue to get popcorn and drinks took forever and resulted in us missing a couple minutes of the movie. Seemed there wasn't a lot of staff serving with the rush of people.
Haven't been to the movies in such a long time. A lot has changed due to the pandemic which is understandable. The facilities were great and the staff were helpful and pleasant. Thank you for adding to the pleasant experience.
Imax was super awesome. Toilets have a urine smell .. could be better .. Best use the mall toilets... the straw for slushy needs to be bigger... couldn't get the ice into the straw .. staff are friendly and accommodating ...
Just got home after watching Elvis. The film was fantastic and the sound was very good but was ruined as the sound was very soft half-way through.(it's a musical) But still a great venue. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
Fantastic cinema. All the latest movies are available. The cinema itself is modern and always clean. Staff are super friendly. The location of the cinema is central to many shops and even suburbs. Overall a great experience.
This is my favourite cinema, recently watched the new Indiana Jones movie with delicious popcorn, coke zero and whispers...mmmmm yum yum. Always a great movie experience. Clean, quality screen and impressive audio.
Overall a great theatre; be sure to come in at least 30mins prior to make sure you get your snacks in time; lines can get quite long. Friendly staff, efficient service, especially when you book your tickets online.
While in the que, a friendly staff assistant called us to an emty self catering machine and assisted us through the booking. The cinema as clean..movie was great. Most certainly taking my son there again.
I couldn't buy a ticket without downloading yet another stupid useless app onto my phone, or sharing credit card details. Can't buy tickets at the cinema anymore. I'll wait and watch it online.
Sterkinekor tokai not impressed that you open at 930am. It is school holidays where is the consideration. When I asked the time the patron thought it was still 8 Amish. Totally not impressed.
Watched a movie that started at 18:15. The staff was so helpful as i didn't know how the self service worked. The cinema was clean and imax seats so comfy, really had a nice time there.
The cinema is so clean. Toilets I'm excellent condition. They just need another person around to help people who are not sure how things work now due to the changes caused by Covid.
I find it ridiculous, how super expensive the snacks are... while you are not allowed to bring in your own snacks and drinks. And that while the tickets are not exactly cheap....
Sadly so quiet at the Movies lately! If you are seeking a near-to-alone time ...this is the place to go. The last 3 movies we have seen have had the movie theatre near to empty.
Aircon stopped working during the film making the closed cinema uncomfortably hot, then the power cut so we missed the end of the film. No apology offered by any staff on site.
My experiences with this theatre is always a good one. The staff go out if their way to make your experience go smoothly. Thank you for adding to my birthday special moments.
Nice and clean. You can only pay with a card. Prices are steep for movie and especially pop corn. It's actually ridiculous because kernels are inexpensive R45 a large
Great service and new look is stunning. Big screen and comfortable seats. I would have given 5 stars except it was cold I think the aircon is set for summer still.
One of the best Cinemas' in Cape Town. Staff is helpful and friendly with kind and credible advise. The theatre is always in a good clean and hygienic state.
Always enjoy the movies... The staff were friendly and helpful and the facilities were great as well. Looking forward to our next movie night.
All good. Great to get to the movies again. It would help if they served pop corn and drinks a bit faster. I like the flavor sachets though
Wonderful experience. Clean environment with friendly staff. Prices, though ! But the cinema will always top any home experience. …
This is the only Ster Kinekor I really go to. It's on my doorstep and I always have a Great Experience there. Keep it up, Promenade staff
First time to the cinema in years. Other than the volume being too loud, it was a good experience. Loved the wider, comfortable seats!
Went to watch Wakanda Forever at 3D IMAX, throughly enjoyed the experience, was our first time and definitely not our last
Tux collection quick, but 20min queue for popcorn Screen 4 has 4 black marks on the screen which detracted from the film
Nice cinema, goodcselection of movies, take your own snacks to avoid the insanely overpriced popcorn and other snacks
Really enjoyed our experience but they could have used more staff behind the food counter. We waited a long time.
First time back after covid, I forgot how awesome going to the movies is. Very helpful team, great experience
Was nice to watch my daughter enjoy her movie...nothing has changed much at the venue, but the service is ok
Lucia was exceptionally helpful and friendly!!!! It was a lovely personal touch to a very automated system!
Was so nice after a 3 year break from the movies, so glad covid situation is almost a thing of the past
Great cinema. Good quality visuals and audio. Air conditioned and comfortable seats.
Staff very helpful & professional. Cinema is clean,, grt time 4 couple or family.
Well organized with cashless ticket system. Ample parking at Blue Route mall
Service fast and good, cinema was clean, and restrooms too
Nice place to watch a movie and hangout with your friends.
Great snack, friendly, helpful staff and clean theatres
Have had some great experiences at this place.
