The artists arrive in their small vans and park on the pavement/sidewalk outside the gallery. They step out of their vehicles and begin unloading their paintings. These artists have chosen to display their art in the street. However, this does not automatically classify it as street art. So, what distinguishes street art from other forms of art, such as those intentionally placed in galleries? The status of these artists must depend on something else. But what could it be? When you exit the grounds of the Colombo National Museum, chances are you'll notice several street artists exhibiting and selling their paintings on the sidewalk. Many of these paintings are of little artistic value. Their target audience is mainly tourists looking for a souvenir to take back home, but some stand on their own merits.
