UPDATED JANUARY 2018: Whilst the food is delicious and presented very well the service level absolutely stinks. From entering, the manager is not happy and of little words. He clearly does not want to be here and with a snooty attitude made us feel unwelcome. Our fellow guests were running a bit behind and as we did not want to miss a show at the arts centre we wanted to place our order before the others arrived. We were told a stern "NO, not until the others arrived". We stressed we had a show to see but another waiter told us that was their policy and sorry. This is a completely ridiculous policy and left us completely floored. I won't be back based purely on the attitude of the staff. MARCH 2017: I have been before a couple of years ago but held back on the review as I wanted to try it again. We decided to go for a weekend lunch on a sunny Melbourne day. The restaurant was about a third full so made for a comfortable and relaxing dining experience. Lots of steel and glass with great views over the city and Yarra. Plenty of different seating spots so you are spoilt for choice. Firstly, service is impeccable, a friendly warm smile and genuine conversation. All the way through we were served by a few wait staff and all were at the same charming level. The menu is very enticing, modern Australian but with a slight asian bent. It's very versatile and has so many good options we would love to try them all. We chose a couple of starters, an entree to share and 2 mains. I have to say I am impressed with portion size, it is really good. Too often I am disappointed with stingey portions which are uncalled for, here you will be fed well but also with satisfying flavours. Presentation is very good, styled with a keen eye for detail. There was an un-balanced sourness in one of the sauces but not a big problem. The wine list by the glass is decent but there are so many good wines by the bottle (wish the Curly Flat was by the glass, hint hint). A great experience.

Worth a try for any foodie. Complex and contemporary dishes that I believe all people who care for food will appreciate. I highly recommend the set menu ($105 for nine dishes served over three courses) as it provided a great array of dishes to try, for what I think was a good price. See list of dishes included below: • Baker Bleu country sourdough, cultured chilli butter • Sake washed tuna, soybean pesto, yuzu jelly • Steak tartare, nashi, black garlic, confit yolk, wonton crisp • Golden silken tofu, oroshi daikon, soy dashi --- • Prawn & ginger dumpling, wood ear mushrooms, tom yum dressing • Humpty Doo barramundi, cuttlefish, confit black bean vierge --- • Szechuan spiced duck, watercress, chilli dressing • Claypot rice, lup chong, shitake, son in law egg --- • Dark chocolate creme, cherry feuilletine, coconut sorbet The dessert was genuinely one of the best things I’ve ever eaten. Like, ever! I would eat that every single day if I could. Other stand-ours included the prawn and ginger dumplings, the barramundi, and the clay pot rice with the egg. I took one star off because 2 out of 9 dishes were below average. The tofu was bland and the tuna dish was off-balance. I shaved a bit off because the location itself was a bit difficult to navigate - so allow for extra time to make it in time for your booking. It requires going upstairs but I believe there is an elevator for accessibility. Service is warm, but it does get pretty loud. If you’re looking for a quiet place to dine, it won’t be here, although I don’t personally mind. Don’t let the one star taken off faze you. I truly would go back (mostly for that godly dessert) and highly recommend for anyone who appreciates well thought-out, complex flavours with flair and care in every bite.

On 8 January we went to Taxi Kitchen located in Federation Square ✨ We got: Rare Seared Kangaroo This was excellent! The lean meat was cooked rare so it stays soft, great contrast to the crunchy crackers. Prawn & Ginger Dumplings The dumplings need to be eaten in one-bite so the juiciness from it and the tom yum broth can be explode in your mouth Szechuan Spiced Duck w/ 5 Spice Caramel One of the best duck dishes we’ve ever had! The flavor profile hits all of the tastebuds - sweet, savory, sour, spicy. The cripsy skin held the sauce really well and the meat is very tender. Green Beans, Ginger, Rocket salad Not the best side dish we could get as the ginger was very overwhelming and when we took it off, the salad was lacking flavors. Skip this and try their other sides instead. Overall, we enjoyed our experience here, the food was excellent, the place was nicely spaced & decorated, and the staff was friendly. Not too sure why it wasn’t busy when we were there, but you definitely want to visit this place & book it in advanced (just incase!)

I recently celebrated my birthday at Taxi Kitchen, and it was a delightful dining experience. The food served at this restaurant was absolutely delicious. The menu offered a variety of options that catered to different preferences. The staff at Taxi Kitchen were friendly and attentive throughout our visit. They provided excellent service, making us feel welcomed and well taken care of. Additionally, the restaurant's location provided us with a great view of the city, adding to the overall ambiance of the evening. While the overall dining experience was exceptional, I must mention that the meat could have been slightly softer. However, this minor detail did not overshadow the other positive aspects of our meal. The flavours, presentation, and quality of the dishes were all top-notch. I highly recommend Taxi Kitchen for special occasions or simply for a memorable dining experience. The combination of delicious food, friendly staff, and a stunning city view make it a worthwhile choice.

Super busy and bustling with life on the weekend night. ❤️: We got to try a range of delicious dishes including fresh oysters with ponzu sauce, sher wagyu bresaola with crispy bread, eggplant namprik dip, fried turnip cake, barramundi fillet with curry, pumpkin tortellini, miso cauliflower, and sides. Don’t miss out on any of their desserts. We all loved the Chocolate Mousse, Lemon Meringue and Passionfruit Souffle.

A truly wonderful and relaxing lunch today at Taxi Kitchen. “Modern Asian” cuisine can be a bit hit and miss, but every single dish we ordered was outstanding. Highly recommend the Wagyu dumpling, the duck, and the XO pippies. The service staff were lovely and hospitable, especially because we bought an infant child which they kindly provided a high chair for with no fuss. I would highly recommend Taxi Kitchen.

Officially now one of my favourite lunch restaurants in Melbourne. Impeccable service — including a round of free cocktails for the table as I came for a birthday — and complementary soup. The waiter to patron ratio was such that service was always prompt and helpful. The food came out quickly and was delicious, as well as beautifully plated. The lunch menu is wonderful value. I gave a 4 for the ambiance because it was nothing outstanding — it’s a great location with good views but located on top of a pub with quite basic modern decor. Nonetheless, Taxi Kitchen is one of Melbourne’s best hidden fusion restaurants!

Good food and view but marked down stars because we ordered two same desserts and they took the wrong ones out. After we realized, we informed a waitress. She said she messed the order up. So we can have those dessert and she'll order the right one under her staff credit. We were expecting that we would get two desserts but only got one. When asked, we were told (with the attitude) from the same waitress that she got that one for us free of charge!! So we were like ... hang on, it wasnour fault and we didn't finish the wrong desserts because we were waiting for the right one. Anyway, it wasn't nice to be said to like we were in a wrong.

While in Sydney, we struck up a conversation with a local and we mentioned we were heading to Melbourne. She recommend a few places, one of which was Taxi Kitchen. Just wow! What fantastic food and such personal service. Our server was so friendly and was great at describing the food. We enjoyed the fried and sautéed oysters, the Hiramasa kingfish, the wagyu and ginger dumplings, the candy pork belly and the roasted mushrooms. The fries were also good! We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. As we left, the manager provided some great recommendations for other locations to hit while in Melbourne. We highly reco Taxi Kitchen.

Exquisite tasting food with a spectacular backdrop and view of Fed Square, Yarra River and Flinders Street station. Sadly many restaurants in picturesque locations tend to use that as an excuse for service and quality but not taxi kitchen. Familiar contemporary Australian cuisine, e.g. porterhouse steak, duck confit, kangaroo, Barramundi ... But Asian influence adds extra element of flavour hit. Raw tuna was a wonderful mixture of texture and flavours, but the duck was the star. Succulent, tender with crispy skin and a caramel sauce not too sweet or overbearing. Also importantly, very reasonably sized portion!

  • The Melbie

Rather pressed for time before theatre event nearby - we decided on the share plate menu. King prawns dumplings were good but I would have expected more fresh flavour. The wagyu beef dumplings were similar tangy taste to the prawns. Country sourdough was good. Serves are small. A larger group is better for share plates. More upmarket than Transport Bar downstairs but nice ambience. Iconic corner of Fed Square & across from Flinders St station & Southbank.

We went to this restaurant for a wine and food pairing dinner hosted by Penfolds. Upon arrival, we were given each a glass of champagne and served raw tuna tatare canape. It was amazing! The food served throughout the dinner was immaculately prepared and delicious. Each meal was paired perfectly with wines from Penfolds. The stand-out dish was the slow cooked beef cheek. All of us enjoyed tremendously. Well done to Taxi restaurant and the Penfolds team!

It was a beautiful experience to have lunch here with my guests and try the Feed me lunch. Food was great especially the pork belly. Service from Jade was exceptional as she was helpful and pleasant to deal with. Will come back again soon. Came back again yesterday 20 Oct. with a couple this time for the Showstopper dinner. Food was amazing and my friends loved the food and the place. Like our first visit, the service was superb - thanks to Kitty

Wow! Stunning scallops (ive never had better), ceviche, duck and other chef's suggestions like prawn dumplings offered to our large group as part of fixed menu. I ate things I normally wouldn't and loved them. Most of our group dont like duck but loved this tender and crispy version. The vegetarians also had plenty of offerings and said they were amazing. Our waiter was also incredible. Highly recommend

Very cool and trendy Asian fusion fancy restaurant in Melbourne. The restaurant itself is located in a steel box placed over the Federation square with a nice view over the river and the CBD. The view is not the main dish for the night, but it is a nice complement to the food served in set menus they have to offer. Extensive wine and drinks options to go together as well. Service was amazing. Highlights to the seared tuna and the chocolate dessert. Just beware that the experience will be pricey.

Located smack in the heart of the CBD, it's difficult to miss the lingering eye-catching TAXI sign, and not feel the pull to eventually hail the Taxi Kitchen. The marble bar lining the Kitchen offering a spectacular view of the waters and cityscape, widely complements the contemporary Australian cuisine dishes served by the obliging and particularly helpful waiting staff. And the creatively laid out food is a gastronomical delight accompanied by a rather varied selection of wines and cocktails to choose from.

Appetiser - Banh Mi crockettes were unique and really tasty. Pass Entree - Wild Mushrooms fantastic . Pass Main 1 - Salmon was wonderful. Pass. Main 2- Steak was cooked perfectly but too sweet(tasted like a char siew pork fusion of steak). Fail Sides - Cauliflower, supporting gravy a bit to flavourful. Fail Dessert - mandarin sorbet souffle , very strong sweetness and citrus. Tasty but strong. Pass.

Everything was wonderful. Great cocktails to start, then lovely wine choices to follow. Everyone enjoyed the small plates, especially the sashimi and the dumplings. I've been to a few places to eat, but this simply took my breathe away. Kingfish sashimi, with the most delightful sauce complimenting it. Duck, cooked to perfection. Barramundi (from Humpty doo? I thought that was a cooking style at first!) paired with a fantastic riesling. Sensational view (of a thunderstorm of all things), brilliant service. And I love the open kitchen! This is a well-run kitchen balanced by a lovely staff and perfect view.

  • W W

For the view and food, it was a good price point. The complimentary bread was the worst we've had in Melbourne, which was surprising. Luckily the food were good. The bug tails were good value, beef dumpling was nice, lamb shoulder and cauliflower both well cooked. The fries was a bit of a let down considering it was $9, nothing fancy, just typical bar fries. Service could be better, I felt like we kept getting neglected, ie. The water refill.

Definitely one of the most memorable meals in my life. At the last minute my sister's and I went there. It was the end of lockdown and the city was just emerging again. Celebrated my sister's birthday at this great restaurant last Sunday. Of the 8 people on our table, 3 have medical dietary conditions and the staff couldn't have been more accommodating. We did share plates for our starters and the serving sizes were very good. The mains were a very generous size. Beautiful food and an excellent selection of wines. I could not fault the experience.

Always a winner and a personal favourite of mine in Melbourne. Location couldn't be any better in Fed Square, views and ambience are modern and cool without being too crazy. Food though is the real winner here; hefty selection of modern Australian / asian fusion here from fish ceviche and caramelised pork belly each with a favourful punch. The menu is seasonal but anytime you see the Kingfish Ceviche with ponzu jelly, grab it.

Service is great, view is decent For the food, we thought the scallop were great, but the rest of the showstopper was average at best. Apparently there were some foie gras shavings on the wagyu which none of us tasted. Dessert was not memorable I think for the steep price, it is not worthwhile.

Wonderful pre theatre dinner at Taxi Kitchen. We enjoyed 3 small plates, 2 mains and a side, which was perfect for 2 people. Tuna, wagyu dumplings and lamb bao buns to start. Duck and barramundi for main with side cauliflower. Great view over the city from the second floor in fed square. Host and waitress very good too. A great experience. Chic and bright interior and nice setting by the river. Food didn't really hit my palate. Overall presentation was good. Liked the summer green which was refreshing and warm with the hazelnut spread and the spicy oil added a bit of kick. Barramundi was well cooked - crispy on the skin and moist inside. Avoid the slow cooked chicken breast - flavor in my opinion wasn't really infused and pretty dry.

  • Paul Lin

Was here because of the high review. Pros Good location and atmosphere. Good service Cons Thai fusion in the wrong way. Flavours doesn't match each other. Every dishes I had feels like just putting colours together without understanding the overall taste in our mouth. The worst one is the entree tuna with broad beans, they just don't go together. Give a 2 because they don't understand the food.

I sincerely had no idea that this restaurant was so good. The meal was absolutely life changing. I was so emotionally motivated by the way it made me feel. “Delicious” is not enough of a word to describe how great the food is. I love Melbourne Yep, I'm a fan.. Highly recommended!

We had a fantastic experience at Taxi Kitchen. We did the 6 course tasting menu, and were even able to vary the offerings. The food was amazingly good, to accompany the delicious wine and great view of the Yarra. To top it all off, the service was exemplary; attentive, knowledgeable and friendly staff.

Lovely views of the city. Food was delicious. Asian fusion with an interesting Australian twist. I had the rare Kangaroo for entree which was a very nice surprise! We also had the scallops which was superb. The downside was the duck which had too much five spice. Otherwise, great experience!

Nice location, friendly & knowledgeable waitstaff, overall delicious food. 4-course menu/$65p The only thing was that I had to reach out multiple times to refill my water. Although the restaurant was very quiet without many people, it seemed under-staffed (only 1-2 FOH). I felt neglected.

Taxi at Federation Sq is a unique experience with its service and food. Being a tourist, the dishes were unique and representative of modern australian. I love the tender kangaroo dish. Waiters were very knowledgeable and friendly.

Enjoyed the 4 course tasting menu on a trip to Melbourne. A great way to try smaller portions of what’s on the menu without committing to an entree size dish. The crispy salmon was my favourite.

I am rating 4.5 - round up to 5. Nice food good service, reasonably priced. All of us enjoyed visiting the restaurant. The only 0.5 point reduction was because no on site baby feeding facility.

Good selection of dishes. Kingfish sashimi and pork candy are good. Szechuan salted duck and steak are disappointed. Came out super dry. We were unable to finish them.

Great location and quality food. For some reason I like the shared plates more than the main dish and desserts.
