I ordered my fried chicken burger with the Lee's Donuts. Man, I can only say that they did not disappoint!!! I already mentioned from my previous post that the donuts from the Lee's are the best in town. But the actual star here is the fried chicken! The outside was super crispy and the inside was so tender and juicy that the juice kept oozing out through the wrapper. The batter was fried perfectly but I didn't think it was too greasy or filling. They also chose chicken thigh over breast, which really tells you they really thought it through and picked the best ingredients (oh hello to the best donuts WITH chicken thigh). This exceeded way above my expectation. In fact, the thigh was fried so well that the attention was focused mostly on the chicken and the donut became unnoticeable. It's still great though but I think I would prefer eating them separately to fully enjoy everything to the fullest. They were also very generous with the pickles, but too bad I'm not a fan of pickles :( In summary, this restaurant has won many thumbs up from a very challenging and fussy customer who generally hates burgers. I'd come back for their burger without the donuts. I think I'd prefer a separate trip to the Lee's for dessert. NOTE: Donut burger is only available on Mondays Price: $13 without a side ($2 extra for a choice of: fried onion rings/ fries/ house salad/ cesar salad) Taste: 4.7 / 5 atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ seating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Price Performance ratio: 4.7 / 5

This is strictly a serviced based review! I would've loved to have given a food based review but unfortunately after being there for over an hour we couldn't wait any longer for our food and had to leave. The entire experience didn't go well from the start. Initially I had to go see the bartender to get a menu and I asked if we ordered from him, a polite waitresses intervened and mentioned that she wasn't informed we were there. (no problem, that happens). I got back to the table and waited another 10 minutes (it wasn't busy) and when she arrived she was surprised we needed menu's. (We laughed it off). We ordered what I imagine was a delicious feast and waited with great anticipation only to be gravely disappointed when the time we had allotted for our lunch date (without kids for once) ran out and we were forced to leave without eating. They rushed to get the food out and even paid for it but unfortunately money was not the issue, it was time. The American was a massive disappointment and I will not recommend anyone else take a chance that your experience would be different. You failed (The American) ****UPDATE**** The management at The American contacted me to offer me a make up experience at The American and then never responded to me again. Even when trying to make up for forgetting about me and my wife while physically at the restaurant they once again forgot about us. That's another 1 ⭐.

We had high hopes of sitting down to a couple of pints and a great burger. The pints were fine, service was good but the food was terrible. Our food was ready within 5-7 minutes of ordering (very suspect to have a fresh burger cooked in that time). The burgers were small, somewhere between a proper burger and a slider, they had no flavour (we weren’t even sure they were beef), and the buns were soft and white like the cheapest loaf of bread you can buy. Absolutely nothing to them. The onion rings were super greasy, to the point were the oil was pooling in the paper bowl they came in. The only thing decent were the fries. Finally, all of the food was served in disposable, food service packaging - the burgers were in a paper/foil sleeve, the onion rings and fries were in wax paper bowls, and all of it served on a cafeteria tray. Not great environmental stewardship. As a supposed sports bar, they have ample TV‘s and screens, but what was annoying was they put on music between periods (Stanley Cup playoffs). This is when true sports fans want to hear the commentary on the period. If you want an experience in a place catering to the under-30 crowd that serves average food at best, then this is the place for you. If not, you’re best to move along.

I decided to fly up last month to catch Peter Gabriel's concert at the nearby Rogers Arena, and this place was in convenient walking distance. The gentleman who was security at the front door was very welcoming. We talked for a bit, and he actually showed me around before seating me at a good table while I waited for some new friends I had made the night before. The running joke was that they were "going to take the American to a suitably named spot" . . . nice one, Jan and Tessa! The drinks were good and reasonably priced. The food was tasty, especially the fried chicken (who knew?), and the atmosphere was funky with good music and pinball machines spread all about (or is that *aboot*? Haha, I couldn't resist). The cocktail servers were very friendly and brought lots of napkins on request. The atmosphere and overall friendliness of staff is why I'm giving this place a five-star review. It's a good thing we got here on a Saturday when we did - around 6pm. Things got crazy busy when we left for the concert 90 minutes later, so keep that in mind.

The American was a very interesting experience. The bar has a really laid back vibe, and I love the atmosphere and arcade games which are a really neat addition. The selection of beer on tap is a great variety from local breweries including some delicious options such as Parksides "The Humand IPA" and "Talisman" both of which are great options. But enough about the drinks let's talk about the main event...the Monarch burger. This burger is truly the king of burgers downtown. Made by next door Italian joint Campognolo, this burger is one of the best I've had in a while! Made on the more medium rare side its juicy, flavorful, amazing! Honestly if they weren't a bit on the pricier side (although well worth it!) I would have probably bought another! My only complaint (and where The American lost 1 star) was with the poutine. Sadly this just didn't live up to the price tag. The gravy was a but too peppery and lacked a nice "meatiness" and the fries were underwhelming. The cheese curds just didn't seem to have that melty goodness and overall I was left wishing I had just stuck with the fries. Don't let this deter you! The Monarch burger is a wonderful experience I recomend to all!

If you want to spend a casual evening with friends or meet new people, this is a great bar for groups. The crowd on average seems to be in their mid-twenties. There are a bunch of pinball machines, 2 skee-ball machines and a place where you can get change to play said machines (so bring cash). Although their bars take card and they have an ATM, so don't worry about that. They also have an optional coat check. Recently they've changed to having unisex washrooms, but watch out when you enter the one right of the coat check because you might walk into dudes pulling their dick out since all the urinals are that one. I'm not a prude, but I'm just warning you. They have great cocktails and a good selection of beers. The food is okay and average-priced, but I would suggest eating dinner at one of the other places that Chinatown has to offer. Music is also a mix depending on the person operating it, but sometimes they play hip-hop and it's lit! Every time I'm there, it gets super packed, so don't expect to get a table unless you've reserved one or you come early.

This white guy at the door definitely made my whole experience to the lowest point by the second I stepped into the bar. I totally understand of the procedure of ID requirement, but the way he kicked me out of the bar, the way he treated me, it was definitely unacceptable and extremely uncomfortable. When I went back to the bar 20mins later with my passport, he took his time to simply check my info for who knows why. Didn’t make sense for someone who checks hundreds of IDs everyday to take that amount of time. He told me it was just a procedure to check the ID, I understand. I have no problem with the procedure, but his way of treating me. This was the very first time in my life I really did feel racism, from him. I actually didn’t intend to write this review in the beginning, thought I might just be overthinking. But then I just learned about someone else’s review with similar experience 8 months ago. I think I am doing the right thing to bring this issue up again now.

A rough go at it, hopefully this is a rare experience that I held. 3 members of staff had their masks below their chins the majority of the time (I understand it’s rough, but cmon? Fortunately they were masked when serving us, just not masks at the bar). The barman was pouring drinks maskless. Service slow and rude. 4 empty tables had empties on for 20+min, servers just lollygagging at the bar. There was Serratia marcescens(the pink slime) in the washroom sinks, urinals dusty as ontop, when were they last cleaned? The doorman was surprised we had our vaccine passports ready, but the rest of the group who joined later didn’t even ask to have theirs checked. Food subpar. Maybe I’m just super heightened as ive been a GM in the industry for 12years. Just a quick cleanup, new training, and a pride in the job could turn this place around. It was very disappointing to see lack of care for customers safety re: the masks.

One of the few pubs open in these times for dine in. This is a sketchy area with a lot of characters one needs to avoid, especially near the Pacific Train station and the park. But once you get inside here it's all good. As I entered the waitress greeted me. Took my name and number. Seating is pretty much high wooden stools and tables which could be uncomfortable for some. But they are well spread out and high partitions between each. Ordered the Blue Buck Pale Ale on special (they have 5-6 beers on special every day $2.50 off). The breakfast burrito was also on special (rotation menu every day as well) but I settled for the crispy cauliflower. It was done to perfection and the house gochujang/yogurt dip was hot but delicious The pinball machines are interesting. Washrooms in the basement are clean and well stocked. Will definitely recommend for friends and also families.

One of my go-to spots on Main St in Vancouver. A hip, trendy bar with tons of games and activities. They've got a lineup of different pinball machines, you can shoot hoops and throw footballs. They've organized a number of different events throughout the week such as Karaoke and Trivia Nights. The open concept idea allows you to socialize with people fairly easily. Food is sourced from DL Chicken and I'm a huge fan of them. Chicken Tender Toonie Thursday's during Thursday night Football is a big move for us. Decent selection of craft beers as well for reasonable prices. They've got huge projector screens as well so it definitely gets busier during the sports seasons. Service is above average as well. The American is quickly becoming my go-to spot for cheap and amazing chicken tenders and sports games with friends.

My husband and I have been here a total of three times. First time was during Covid and everything was great. Second time was a couple of weeks ago when we went for drinks before an even across the street. We ordered some beers and appies. Food was okay. Nothing to write home about but the waiter just rushed the bill over to us as soon as we finished the last bite of our fries. Didn't ask if we wanted anything else and the place was empty. Not like they had people waiting for tables. Third time was tonight. The bouncer was nice, checked our IDs and brought us to our table. Again, the place was empty and we sat there for 20 minutes with no one approaching us even to bring water. Just completely ignored so we ended up leaving which was a shame. Last time we ever visit.

This place is one of the trending ones these days. To me it's way overrated! For the good points: There are a foosball table, a pool table and pinball machines. Beers are good. It's also great to find a bar with large tables for large gatherings. But sadly you won't be able to communicate with your friends, because of the insanely loud music! Even at 6pm it's crazy loud. Studies proved that louder music make people unable to communicate so they drink more> $$$. Apparently this bar heard of it. And when you see also the cost of the cocktails (small glasses full of ice cubes) and food (something like 14 CAD for a small burger, not even coming with fries!) you can feel this place is all about making money. If you spend an evening there, you will lose a lot of money and your voice. Better go elsewhere.

Really disappointed for my first experience at The American. We came for the f1 which The American’s staff generously opened early for, and played it with sound. This is the only reason they have redeemed themselves to two stars. We ordered our food about 5 minutes after we entered, and didn’t receive it until lap 68/70. The most disappointing thing is that it felt like we were just lied to. We watched people finish their meals before 11:30, and were told that the kitchen hadn’t opened until 12:00 and that’s why our food was taking so long. Clearly not. When the food finally came - it was pretty good, and came out hot. Wish my waitress paid a bit more attention to us. If you are advertising to open early for an event, be ready for it. Can’t see myself coming back.

Fun spot! Didn't eat here but games were fun and servers were super friendly. Would recommend and will go again. I wrote my first review above 2 years ago. Just went to this spot again. Servers are still great and the place is fun but one of the games I played did not work properly as well as the photo booth which we had to put money in twice to get our photos. When we mentioned it the server brushed it off, actually didn't even acknowledge it. When it happen once with the game it was a bummer. But when it happened a 2nd time with the photo booth and no care from the establishment it's suspicious. I would not recommend the games anymore sadly. Which is thepart that makes this place so fun.

I can always rely on this place to be a fun spot. The little arcade is a good detour and the long social tables are great for meeting new people. The bartenders are always fast. I took a collective star off for a) the burgers are, in my opinion, flavourless and b) my experience last night with a bartender who just didn't seem to be enjoying herself. Was sober and coming in to grab a quick drink with a friend, so I was acutely aware of being treated like I was drunk. Par for the course given the timing of our visit I guess, but in the future, I'd recommend treating guests with a bit more decorum until they deserve otherwise. Other than that, good crowd, good music, and good layout.

Good bar that has an impressive 9 pinball machines. They are mostly Stern machines though with a couple of classics for us older players: Netflix Stranger Things, Attack From Mars, Medieval Madness, Rick and Morty, Elvira's House of Horrors, Godzilla ゴジラ, Jurassic Park (Stern), Star Wars Mandalorian, Rush. Arcade machines include Street Fighter 2 Turbo Hyperfighting $1 for 2 plays although you can blow both credits immediately for multiplayer. The newest arcade machines here are naturally from the American company Raw Thrills and they are Jurassic Park Arcade and the omnipresent Big Buck HD Wild. If you like racing, they have 2 seats for Mario Kart Arcade GP.

Cool venue. Arcade games, pool table, larger tables for medium-sized groups. The burger was what drew my friends to this place. The burger is made by Monarch Burger (Robert Belcham of Campagnolo) and it was pretty good. It is a smashed-style burger; very nicely cooked. Crusted on the outside but still juicy. Flavor is beef- and pepper-forward, with the small diced onions coming in after. I think it's a little salty; would have liked some fresh red onion or more lettuce or something to balance the saltiness. Might be my fault for getting two patties, though. Overall, one of my favorite burgers in the city. Fries tasted like real potatoes.

  • Heather Hall

A diamond in the rough. It doesn't look like much from the outside and is in a bit of a dodgey area. Although I may not normally choose this place I was so pleasantly surprised! The staff was great. Super friendly. Easy to chat with and the food wait was not so long as we were one of 5 tables. The food was just about great! The burgers we ordered were tasty and yet both my sister and I wanted just a bit more for a $15 burger. The fries were perfect! And a generous amount of them for $2. The fry sauce was yummy on our burgers as well. We will be back to try out another burger option and to play some of the arcade style games!

Good place to drink and watch sports. Nice beer selection. Decent service. I did the NFL Sunday Tailgate BBQ last season a few times with friends. The BBQ is pricey but good. I've always enjoyed their chicken items as I'm a fan of Downlow Chicken. Recently, I ordered three hamburgers there. I did takeout because of Covid 19. The fries were decent and so were the onion rings. Of the three burgers ordered, one was very rare. One was a little more cooked. The third barely qualified as medium. Make sure that you let them know how you'd like your burger cooked. Overall, I still like this place.

Went for brunch, ordered coffee. They don't serve coffee... ordered hot chocolate. They don't serve hot chocolate... Ordered tea. They don't serve tea... AT BRUNCH TIME!?? ordered appetizers instead, took 45 minutes to get fries, onion rings, nachos, and beers. Waitress never came around, so we had to go down to the bar and ask TWICE for someone to come take our order and even after that, it took 20 minutes to get someone. An hour visit became 2+ hours without even being served properly. Terrible food, terrible service, terrible place. The DL chicken is the only good thing about the place

Chicken burger from DOV menu ($18) Appy- Smoked onion rings. Smokey, herbal slight spice flavor. Very distinguished taste, probably one of a kind! Could use some more pieces tbh only three were given. Main- OG spicy chicken burger (+$2) I’ve never had such big burger! The buns were average but the fried chicken meat are juicy, tender. There wasn’t any burst of flavor except for the spice added but overall decently delicious. (Only downside was it wasn’t too crunchy but very greasy) Dessert-funnel cake. Crunchy, covered in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate sauce. Pretty good.

  • Amanda Ellsworth

Fantastic burgers, onion rings, drink selection. Good is diner/pub style just less greasy, better quality and delicious. Note, it is a little on the pricey side. But portions and quality make it worth as a treat. Burgers or mains do not come with sides. Sides sold separately. Makes it great for a couple or a group of people wanting to share different items. We had the truffle burger, the Meech, onion rings and fries, and fruit bomb sour from Main St Brew Co. All SO GOOD. Truffle burger is very very rich. Merch is just a classic burger. Vegan options. Not completely gf though.

Great place, great atmosphere. Went to watch a canucks game and they had the sound on which is a plus for fans. I tried their american burger which was kinda small but tasted good, tried the wings and the batter used is not the greatest, it was 70% batter, 15% fat and 15% chicken so, not getting that again lol. Their fries was great. lots of seats so its great for groups. Pinball machines were fun. Staff were great as well.

This is a seat yourself bar and order your drinks and food at the bar as well. The menu is just a few burgers and they aren’t accompanied with fries. You’ll have to purchase the fries separately! Just letting everyone know so it’s a breeze when you walk in and aren’t confused like us. On a side note, take change. $2 per game to play ball and then $1 for the other games. We had a lot of fun drinking and playing games! The burger was a little to peppery for my liking but the place was amazing! They have an atm if you forget change or a change machine :)

  • Jon Marcopoulos

Our food was slow to be delivered, but before we could say anything on the manner our server corrected the issue and spoke honestly to us about the problem, and the kitchen staff came and apologized to us about the issue. We were quality checked by the server as well as the kitchen after the food arrived, and they took care of a drink and half the food cost for us. We didn't say a word of complaint to the staff, it was clear they were very conscious of the issue. Every restaurant makes mistakes, 5 star restaurants handle them well.

  • Maxime parenteau

used to live next door 2.5 years ago and absolutely LOVED the place, fresh beer, amazing staff that became friends and the best burgers in town. went back last week and the beer was stale, server was nice so thats good but the food sucked, burger bland, chilly cheese fries felt microwaved, including us there 5 people in total that ordered food and all 5 plates only had 1-2 bites taken out and straight to the garbage . such a disappointment considering this place meant a lot to us and now seeing it go down the drain

  • Amanda E

I go here often as it’s on my way home but unfortunately nothing here is consistent. Chicken is sometimes great and sometimes super dry, sometimes batter is falling apart. service is sometimes great and then sometimes not at all. Ps their salt and pepper tastes like lemon pepper. Sometimes they Cook their burger right and sometimes it’s pink. Don’t go in expecting for things to be great. Go in hoping their great this time. Please train staff better to be consistent so you can take the guessing out of it.

One vegan burger, onion rings, a cider and a can of local beer. $33 Too much even though the burger was amazing! (5 stars for that) Alone, the burger will run you $14.50...too much I think. Don’t expect much in the way of service and you won’t be disappointed. Oh yeah, hands down THE greasiest onion rings I’ve ever had. They look amazing and the coating has a great flavour but ugh...dripping. August 30/22. One beer and two vegan cheeseburgers. $41.55 This place sucks ass…but the hipsters love it.

Staying at the hostel across the street, I wandered over a couple of times. Had a great time, the atmosphere was very welcoming, and the staff are super friendly. The bartender Rachel was great and even gave me some tips to relocating to Vancouver. I can’t say enough about that kindness. I would reccomend this place to anyone looking for a relaxed fun time.

Monarch burger (only from 5pm - 11pm): Best burger in town!!! Juicy burger, excellent bun, yummy fries! You can also have a grilled cheese bun instead of regular bun, which makes it massive (or amazing, according to my partner). The place is awesome, there's pinball, pool table and other games. We tried to go there on Friday night (8h30pm) and the place was packed, came back on Saturday at 6h30pm an there were some tables available - all of the tables in the centre were reserved, though.

Walking distance from Main Street SkyTrain station. Serves a variety of craft beer and fast foods such as poutine, burgers and much more. Family friendly as well. I know some bars don't allow kids but this one does! They also have a variety of pinball machines, pool, foosball and even a football throwing points game to help pass the time while having a drink. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to hang out in a chill environment especially on a weekday.

  • Sarah

I’ve been here twice now - love the wine selections in the off sales fridge (local BC options) but I’m not a huge fan of the chicken burgers. The flavour and concept are great but the chicken used is just too thick but then also narrow so it fills out the bun weird and it makes it really hard to eat. It would be really nice if they pounded it out a bit so it could fit the bun better. The smoked onion rings; however, are delicious and I would highly recommend them.

  • damanpreet singh

Went to this place for a birthday party. It had a huge lineup outside and we were lucky that our friends had reservations and we could bypass the lines. Very loud music and this is a fun place to hangout. Lots of games as well to keep you entertained. Beer was good and I was ordering mostly on the counter. Food was good too although French onion burger was too strong tasting for my wife. Overall positive experience and will check them out again for sure.

Had a burger which are all 2 Patties so ordered just a single patty because I thought 2 Patties would be too filling. Turns out the burgers are the size of a large cookie so in hindsight could have managed the 2 Patties. $18 burger was discounted only $3 for the single patty version. Taste was pretty good but didn't think there was value for my bucks. Won't be back.

Video game arcade and a menu thet can't be beat anywhere. Features DL chicken burger options and also their beef burger staples that keeps people from everywhere coming in to enjoy the atmosphere and great staff. Wonderful place to enjoy any sports and UFC nights with special nights menu available sometimes for these days. I love bringing friends and family who now frequently come by as often as I do. Thank you for everything and see you soon

Their beer selection is limited but good, but I find it frustrating that they don't sell pitchers. The food is expensive given the portion sizes, but my friends and coworkers have said it's tasty, so if you're willing to pay a small premium to eat where you drink (and you don't have any dietary restrictions), go for it. I still like this place better than most of the others in the neighbourhood just for the ambience and chill crowd.

Pretty chill atmosphere in this bar. Nice open layout so you get privacy whether at a booth or one of the longer tables but it never feels cramped on space. Amazing burgers, great selection of beer, and games. The only complaint I have is that they play the music way too loud on weekends, it's not the greatest for conversation in groups, which the layout/vibe seems to encourage. There's also no dance floor, so the annoyingly loud music seems even more pointless. Kitchen closes at 10 on week nights, 11 on weekends. Go to the back counter to skip the line at the front.

My partner and I were quite disappointed with the burgers from here. We are big fans of Down Low Chicken so thought it would be just as good. My partner ordered the Oklahoma burger and it was so soggy it was dripping all over his hands. It was just very soggy tasteless burger. I ordered the Buffalo chicken sando and it was very soggy and had no spice to it. Over all we were really disappointed with the burgers.

Easy reso accommodations. Tons of fun games! Kinda bummed their margaritas were so dreadful lol. Very lively.. its bar service after I think 10pm. I didnt love my burger. I asked for minimal mayo and it was drowning lol. This place is more a fun relaxed ambiance type bar with games to kick it with friends. Don't order the margaritas, maybe try the chicken fingers for food. Good servers. ill be back

Made our Friday night! We’re visiting van to potentially relocate and a friend recommended The American/DownLow and if did not disappoint Quinn went out of his way to deliver to us and let me tell you, it was worth it! Vegan burger and vegan chicken sandwich could easily pass for “real”. Plus, anywhere that gives you Mayo+ketchup for the fries without needing to ask is A+ in my books!

Downlow Burgers is located inside the American. Great delicious burgers without breaking the bank. Yummy beef patty and great friendly service. Love the arcade game especially the skee ball machine! So happy that minors are allowed to eat there until 10pm on weekdays and I could enjoy my burger while my baby sleeps in the stroller. Would definitely go back and try a few more burgers!

Low rating because of the slow and lack of commitment in the service. Our original server was no longer attending us and every time we wanted to ask something their response was "I am no longer your server". The new server was high AF that forgot to ring in our drinks and had us waiting for 15 mins.

I have been here multiple times and the atmosphere is always good. Most recently I was there for the UFC 257 fight and I have to say the staff were amazing that night! Super accommodating, friendly and helpful. Thank you to everyone who was working on Saturday :) Great beers and a nice cider on the menu to wash down a delicious OG Chicken Sando. Thanks again, will be back soon.

  • Esmé

The food is really good here but the place is crawling with rats and mice, in the dining areas while full of people. Management brushed it off saying there are mice everywhere in the area. I've never seen multiple rats AND mice inside a restaurant ever. I'm from the area.. pretty unsettling to see when eating out and knowing that's the attitude that they have about it.

A great casual bar to chill with a large or small party. Been coming here for years with small groups and large Christmas parties. Always good service. Tonight server Emma and her bartender took care of our large party (50+) that were mobile and ordering hard and fast with the utmost speed and professionalism. Very impressed. Also the chicken tenders are TO DIE FOR.

  • Douglas Wood

Great food and great service! You have got to try the OG Sando or the Merch Burger both are fantastic and are a great homage to DL Chicken and Merchants respectively. Another must try is the loaded fries, this I like a big Mac meal in every bite. Not only that but they have their COVID controls sorted out so you can be safe while having a great evening out.

  • Krishna Haridas

Dropped in here on a friend’s recommendation to try out their fried chicken sandwich. Very crispy and tasty sandwiches, we preferred the “Always Sunday” Sando to the “Buffalo hot” sando which was a little too saucey for our liking. Lot of large tvs around and there was an arcade area as well. Friendly waiter and a nice place to hang out as a big group.

  • Wheels

Really enjoyed going here for some drinks with our friends. Lots of pinball and other games to play! Cheap drinks, cheap food, nice chill vibe! Looks like it would be a cool place to watch hockey games or any sporting event. It is also very close to skytrain, making it an easy location to get to. Definitely recommend checking this place out!

A really fun and funky little bar. I strongly recommend drunkenly playing a game of Mario Kart with your buddies, it's a really cool concept and the staff was pretty nice. Be careful though, since it's not in what you would call the safest area of the city. (ie. Maybe don't walk there alone at night.) Definitely worth a visit though.

Can’t even tell you how great Amanda is. I often go to bars/pubs and never had customer service like it. She is kind, reliable and an amazing person. This girl deserves a promotion. Alongside this, the person running your Instagram was very helpful and reliable! Huge shout out for great service. We will be back thanks to your staff

  • Brent Robson

American was a breath of fresh air! The staff were very accommodating, I really enjoy sitting at the bar and getting to know the lovely community that frequents the bar, as well as the kind and personable staff. Food was quite quick and overall they always go above and beyond to make my visits enjoyable. Try their cocktails!

  • Chris Blair

Really the burgers weren't up to the hype. I'd at least liked to have had a plate to eat off. The tables were dirty, the water tasted like chemicals, the burgers were overcooked. The only thing I enjoyed was the fries, they're pretty good with that white dip. I won't go here again and I wouldn't recommend it to my friends.

  • Jarell Alvarez

My first impressions will last because you get a lot for what you pay for. I ordered a stout that seemed super pricey, yet it came in a big ol mug and was great. I was shocked to learn it was under $6 and for something downtown i wanna come back over and over. Love the atmosphere, music and the amount of seats is perfect.

  • Troy Dowling

The American has a dozen or so great pinball tables including some heavy hitters like Medieval Madness, Attack from Mars, and Godzilla. The place is large, so finding some space for a small group isn't too tough. They also hold a weekly trivia night. Every time I leave the place, I feel like I've had a good time.

  • Diana Chan

We ordered the fat boy and merch burgers, but found that the burger patties were dry and tasteless, despite being smothered in cheese and sauce. I couldn’t figure out why the buns were so much smaller than the patty but the burger basically fell apart as soon as you picked it up. Service was good on the patio.

  • Tony

First time here. We came specifically to play the venom pinball machine but the food was top notch especially the chicken tenders, onion rings and the classic burger. Our server Aron was phenomenal. Anytime we are back in Vancouver this place is a must.

Absolutely disgusting food, I ordered 3 of the buffalo hot sando's and all of them were soggy, took one bite out of it and it almost made me vomit, complete rip off this place has the worst DL burgers i strongly suggest to stick with Downlow Chicken Shack. NEVER ordering food from this garbage place again!

  • Jocelyne Ward

Good beer, good atmosphere, good food. Lots of stand up tables that also have stools so you can sit or stand and mingle as you please! They did communal seating well. The burger is incredible if you can get your hands on it - they often sell out. Last time we went at about 6:30 and they were all out.

  • Amy Moorcroft

Good vibes, attentive service on a busy Tuesday trivia night. Burgers are well sloppy though, and they didn’t provide a fork. Dripped all over the place. Hot and tasty though.

Hipster hot-spot... If pointy toques perched way on top of the head bother you--I suggest finding somewhere else to go. That said, there is a decent beer selection and prices aren't too bad. There is an arcade with pinball and party games. Also the new burgers are good, though extremely expensive.

  • Mack Benz

Great spot, great staff. Fun place to play games, get rowdy, be chill, eat good burgers/snacks and hang-out with a group of friends with lots of breathing room. The experience is what you make it, but in terms of larger bar venues, this is one of the better choices in the city, without a doubt.

Good eyes on customer need, very colorful place. Here aiming for download chicken. Wish they have chicken wings!! Happy hours 3-6pm.. the chicken burger too much salt, .. overall price is above average. Many good looking man are hanging here..( from Realtors to Architecture and ordinary Joe…)

  • Amy

Super delicious food. We had a hoagie/burger and wings. The games are a blast and there are several drink options. We actually thought the chilly service was part of their schtick but it is not. The guys (all male servers) are simply aloof. Didn’t change my evening but it may annoy others.

  • Sim

Staff and servers were nice but the burgers and food was just ok. Maybe my expectations were just too high for burgers but they did not taste good and the atmosphere was LOUD it was difficult to even hear the person sitting next to you

Top-notch. The burgers are cooked perfectly, and are the perfect combination of mess and delicious. We also got the chicken tenders, which, like the burgers, are cooked perfectly, moist meat inside a wonderfully spicy batter. Good beer, great service, what more can a person ask for?

Was very busy but service was incredibly decent.the food was top notch and don't even get me started on the amount of games cuz the arcade section and the pinball section were phenomenal! I recommend going there definitely bring a group it's a great social atmosphere check it out!

I rarely visit these types of bars but was surprised by the welcoming atmosphere. They had a trivia game with some regulars, it looked like a lot of fun! I came here for the burger on hamburgermap.com and was very happy with it. I really love the unisex washrooms, so unique.

  • Liv E

Personally my fav bar ever! Good vibes, games, cheap options, great food. Service staff is super friendly. I’m not sure if there’s handicap accessible washrooms so that’s the only fault! (I may just not know the Lore)

only done takeout a bunch, never eaten inside but they do the best vegan burger in all of downtown. 2 impossible smash patties, 2 slices of extremely melty chao cheese, and soft vegan brioche cant be beat by any of the other spots, even the certified vegan restaurants.

  • Derek Townsend

Same vibe of a place, but the burgers went downhill. Their old burgers were WAY better. Nice bun, good meat but there was no good flavor. A burger with potential but at this point, I would rather drink all night at the American and grab a teen burger on the way home.

  • N Van

Had a beer, single patty Oklahoma burger and onion rings. The burger was not very exciting, but the onion rings are probably some of the best I've had. Nice and crisp and served pipping hot. The service was also just meh- it took a long time to place our order.

  • Justin Montigny

This place was awesome, came on a Monday stayed for both football games on the projector. Service was wonderful and the happy hour food was delicious, fresh and exactly what I expected. Played lots of arcade games and had a great time. Will definitely be back

  • Steven Saldebus

It was just ok, but for $18 I expected a more tasty burger and special fries. It tasted the same as five guys except the fries weren't as good or plentiful. Or maybe I'm just entitled and my expectations are too high. Either way the experience was 3 or a meh.

  • Inventropy

Wonderful bar, good food and fair prices. The waiter was really nice, always asking if we need anything. The karaoke night was definitly fun, the performances went from stunning to "ah yes". Nontheless an experience you should make if you ever got the time!

  • redmonkey719

Got a takeout burger. Didn't wait long. Had the food ready, the Sunday sando was very good and reasonably priced for downtown. Next time I'll try dining in and having a few pints. They seemed to have a nice pub style atmosphere, at least for a Thursday.

  • Aaron Shiels

I happened across this place because a nearby bar was full, but my god was that a happy accident. I accidentally found myself here on trivia Tuesday, playing pinball, drinking great beer and eating fantastic burgers. Will definitely be coming back often

Terrible experience on my last visit. Staff were rude. When I went inside a staff member rudely told me to wait at the front. I always listen but the tone was not good. I have been to many bars and restaurants and I rarely get this kind of treatment.

  • Matthew DeFaveri (irmatt)

Burgers burgers burgers onion rings onion rings onion rings!!!!! I WANT TO EAT MORE. But I might puke because I'm so full. These are the best onion rings in the world imagine that right here in Vancouver. Love it to the max. Today's not chicken day.

  • Kevin L.

Came here for their lunch special burger with fries and a drink. The food took a little long to come but it was worth the wait. Comfortable seating, and the bar tender / server was super nice and chill. Good vibes for sure. Definitely will be back!

  • Kareem Gouda

The burgers here are exactly what I'm looking for. They know exactly how to make a thicker patty go down smooth. The meat is juicy and tender and the Americans burger is the correct toppings. Cheese, lettuce, pickle, onion. That's what you

Where do I begin? Lost our reso for euro cup final, promised to “take care of [us]” due to their error. Never happened. Gave a beef burger to a vegetarian and vegan. This was incredibly bad as it happened twice in two weeks, the server

  • Diana Cardenas

It has a nice ambiance but the place is way to hot and to loud. We ordered two burgers and both had ground bones within the beef. It was painful to eat. To bad because the taste was fine but the bones on the meat ruined the experience.

Nice space and love pinball. However for a place that has lots of tables and chairs encouraging conversation, the music is always so loud that everyone has to shout. Not a pleasant experience when you're there for more than 20 minutes.

  • tasha vu

Food was great. I know people keep complaining about portion size but it was all I needed. I like that the fries come separately because I don't always want fries. The drink/beer menu is small but that didn't bother me either. This is

I was there the other day and my friends and I were served by kentya who is SO REFRESHING! She has so much charisma and was such a joy to chat with. I had to write her name down to remember to ask for her the next time we come back!

  • Matthew Gibbons

Food was great! Ordered the DL burger and it was a hand made patty - hard to find these days - delicious! Games were a bit pricy but I guess that's inflation, food and drinks were reasonable! Would recommend for a group of friends!

  • Pooya Dubash

Their burgers are exactly like what you see in the movies, juicy, tasty and worthy of your burger cravings. I had the Americano burger and damn, it hit the spot, oh and their chicken pops and nachos were approved by my kids too.

  • U A

Great place to hang out for awhile. Large open space with many pinball and basketball machines. We went for the burgers, they were alright, the patties were too well done IMO but they have 5 burger concoctions all intriguing.

  • Iain Allan

This is an easy way to have a good evening. Menu is simple and effective. Burgers are good, fries are fantastic, a lot of local beer it was hard to make my mind up. Plus a lot of pinball, skeeball, arcade games, big screens.

  • Jennifer Jordan

What a fun place. Wonderful staff, super cool pinball machines - the Stranger Things one was my favourite by far. If you go on a Tuesday you can catch the IQ2000 Trivia which is nothing less than awesome. Highly recommended

  • Paul C

So different than the way it was in the early 90's, and that is a good thing. Back then it was the poor man's Ivanhoe. Not as good as it was in the 70's, apparently, when live music and cheap beer were the order of the day.

  • Ace

Absolutely delightful. Amazing food, reasonable drink prices. Be warned that no happy hour if there's a PPV event, such as wrestling. But, the atmosphere was amazing when we happened to come in during the AEW event.

The former Electric Owl is now a large sports bar with an excellent selection of current and classic pinball tables. Has a good food menu and more than adequate drinks selection. A great place to watch the game.
