Located at the southern tip of Manhattan with ready access to the harbor and the Hudson River, Battery Park is where the history of New York City began. The area’s strategic location was recognized by Native Americans and Dutch settlers, who called it Capske Hook (from Kapsee, an Indian term for rocky ledge). Near this point, the colonists of the Dutch West India Company began the settlement of New Amsterdam in 1625. As the colony grew and its commerce expanded, piers, wharves, and slips rose along the coastline. The Dutch constructed Fort Amsterdam as early as 1626, and around 1683, the first of a series of gun batteries was constructed around the shore. With its fine promenade and magnificent vista of the harbor, the Battery became a popular place for New Yorkers to visit in the early 18th century. Its development as a public park owes to its enlargement through landfill. Fort George (as Fort Amsterdam was then known) was completely razed in 1788, and its remnants were used to fill in the shore and expand the Battery. Between 1808 and 1811, a new circular fort known as the West Battery was erected 200 feet offshore. It was renamed Castle Clinton (for Governor De Witt Clinton) in 1815 and ceded to the City in 1823. Around this time, the park was extended further by landfills to an area of about ten acres. Another massive landfill project got underway in 1853 and was completed in 1872. Meanwhile, the old fort was renamed Castle Garden and provided the setting for countless receptions, demonstrations, and performances for more than thirty years. General Lafayette was welcomed there in 1824 and Hungarian patriot Lajos Kossuth in 1851. Inventor Samuel F.B. Morse demonstrated his “wireless telegraph” in 1842, and singer Jenny Lind made her American debut in 1850. From 1855 to 1890 the building was used as the federal immigration center for the east coast, processing approximately eight million immigrants. In 1890 Castle Clinton was acquired by the New York City Department of Public Parks, which operated the New York Aquarium there from 1896 to 1941. Portions of Battery Park were closed from 1940 to 1952, while the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and the Battery Park Underpass were built beneath it. Although construction was delayed by World War II, New Yorkers were delighted with the dramatically transformed park, completely relandscaped and expanded by two acres. Subsequent alterations include the addition of Peter Minuit Plaza in 1955 and the dedication of the East Coast Memorial in 1963. Castle Clinton was ceded to the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1950 and designated a national monument. In 1982 New York State designated Battery Park as a part of Harbor Park, a group of historic waterfront sites. Battery Park contains many monuments honoring soldiers, explorers, inventors, and immigrants. In 1995 this American Linden (Tilia Americana) tree was planted as a tribute to singer Jenny Lind (1820-1887), whose performance at Castle Garden on September 11, 1850 was billed as the musical event of the century. Thanks to promoter P.T. Barnum, the arrival of the “Swedish Nightingale” caused a sensation in New York. Thousands of fans purchased Jenny Lind cakes, hats, boots, opera glasses, parasols, and concert tickets. At the concert, Lind earned $12,600, all of which she donated to charitable and benevolent institutions in New York City. She concluded her American tour with a farewell performance at Castle Garden on May 24, 1852

The new and improved The Battery Park is steps ahead from the time back in the 90s and early 2000s when I roamed that area. I worked near the World Trade Center and also visited the Staten Island ferry terminal many times to get together with friends who lived out there. So much has changed, but it's been for the best. The park has so much to offer to any tourist or local residents of NYC. The undates of trails to walk on, bike paths, kid friendly play areas, dog friendly gated areas, many monuments, and the views are a delight to get out of the normal routine. Even their restroom have gotten some good updates. Try the Statue of Liberty tour if you're new to this. Walk one path and try another path coming back and enjoy your surroundings. Ride the Seaglass carousel. Buy some fruits for a vendor sit and enjoy the moment. Many areas to take pictures and selfies.

Restrooms are much larger and updated. It's always a challenge to maintain a public area clean, but this was not bad. There's staff workers on the job. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars.

The dogs gated play area is a large part of grass and tree shaded areas for dogs to interact, play, and run free. I give it a 5 out of 5 stars.

ALERT please guys be careful if you’re tourist and visiting NYC. If you want to take the ferry (the one is free) and it inside a big building, guys it’s totally free!!! You don’t have to pay, but there will be many people wearing blue jackets selling you tickets for that specific knowing that you don’t have to pay a cent. Be careful, do not talk to them, there are many scammers around the park. If you want to take the ferry (the one that takes you to the island, then get your tickets online) those you have to purchase them; but don’t get them at the park because they can sell you something it’s fake. Also those guys were very rude with me and my friend because we denied to pay attention or but those tickets, thanks my friend knew nyc before and she knew what they were trying to do. We skip them finally going around the park and then we got to the ferry station ( free one). I could see the Statue of Liberty and I loved it! Even tho it wasn't that close. also when getting in the ferry find a spot in your right side so you can get a better view of the statue

I went in to see the Statue of Liberty from the distance. Because I didn't have time to actually go to the island itself. It was a fairly average park, enough benches to sit on, dogs welcome. I can't remember if I saw a playground. It was a nice walk around the park. They had ferries that will take you to Ellis island to see the Statue of Liberty and back. I heard it takes about an hour. The view of statue of liberty wasn't actually bad, but it wasn't close enough to admire her details. If you're running short on time, The battery park is a perfect place to see the Statue of Liberty as you stop by to see the Brooklyn bridge which is pretty close from here.

I pick up my kids weekly at Staten Island so we spend time at this park regularly. My kids love it, and there are so many things to do here. The children's playground and the carousel are loads of fun. The public bathroom and a restaurant are nearby with loads of fragrant flowers around.

Stopped in our our motorcycle trip from Middle TN. Was expecting to be able to see the Statue of Liberty a little better then we did and they were under construction so the view was hindered. (Which construction is needed and I completely understand!) Unfortunately we couldn't go into the battery to tour it but it was neat to see the history and beauty around it. We didn't have time to take the boat to Liberty Island but we want to go back and take our kids for sure.

Battery park is a wonderful park. HOWEVER, they are littered by agents trying to sell you the Statue of Liberty ferry tickets. TAKE NOTE that there will be ‘official’ agents trying to stop you from going further into the park and claim that you need a ticket. THEY ARE NOT OFFICIAL AGENTS. I find it annoying and they stop the public from enjoying the park only to sell tickets. The only official way of purchasing the tickets is located beyond the Castle Clinton national monument and they have proper kiosks. Regardless of what the other sellers say, do not be intimidated by them. They have no right to stop you from entering a public park.

A day with my children. Park was very clean. People were orderly. Had a hard time finding Castle Clinton for the excursion, maybe some more signage to assist. The first thing to do is visit the clean restrooms. The attendants were phenomenal in kindness, alertness, and promptness as visitors hurried to board the ships to Lady Liberty! If you plan to visit make sure you get there early with your sneakers and jacket. It was cool and breezy. Visit the Museum! Do not Skip that part! We didn't go to Ellis Island and the gift store we needed more time! Get there Early. I believe you need 5 hours and not 3. Heavy tourist attraction. ENJOY!

Great place to go for the entire family… great place for an outing …. Lots and lots of people and activities going on…you can see dancers in the park performing their art… there are also artists to draw a sketch of you while you pose… lots and lots of statues….also across the water is the Statue of Liberty. You have a great view of it from Battery park. Here also you can take a ferry to go see the Statue of Liberty. This was a nice little park to spend a couple of hours. It wasn’t very big, but had amazing views of the Statue of Liberty and the coast. There were lots of interesting sculptures and military memorials which makes this a great area to reflect and pay your respects. My only complaint was the lack of gravel paths - the majority of walking area seemed to be concrete, which isn’t easy on the feet. Still, definitely worth checking out if you’re in the area.

You can't go to New York and not visit Battery Park. There's war memorials, there are fountains, plenty of benches, live performers, views of Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty, though recently many areas have been blocked and restricted due to construction and there's limited to almost no view. Being a ferry point for the islands, it is always busy. There are a few cafes/canteens for coffee water etc, plus vendors selling fresh fruits and memorabilia!

This is a small park usually crowded with people coming from or going to Liberty Island to see the statue of liberty including us. We had fun here sitting on the bench in the shade of trees protected from the sun to relax a bit before moving ahead on our visit. The view of the statue of liberty from here is amazing but as with other places, there are a lot of scams going on here as well so be careful who you interact with while you are here.

We waited more than an hour in order to be able to abort the fairy to go to the Statue of Liberty. When they were done with whatever problem they had, then they came to In form the people. Lovely quiet and historical place in New York, space in a coastal park area for birds & butterflies. Lovely memorial area with nearby fountains, we walked all along the coastal path to Brooklyn bridge, good sidewalks and facilities to use on the route! Clean restrooms.

Very lovely and serene park. I enjoy seeing little ones play in the water. The area is so clean and fresh although it’s close to the city it feels like an entirely different environment because of its atmosphere. There are very close train lines and museums attractions in walking distance. I will recommend it as a stop when visiting museums or taking the ferry!

Well I was in this park 3 years ago and I had impression that it is small but cute. This time it was horrible experience!They closed the promenade near water where you can make nice picture and see Statue of Liberty and now there are only crowds of people and gates for ferry everywhere. Really big disappointment. I would not recommend anymore to go there.

Got on the ferry here for the Liberty Island tour that includes Ellis island. Poured with rain all day but still enjoyed the tours. Statue of Liberty is iconic ( although smaller in real life which surprised us all) We went out on the plinth which is the concrete base Liberty stands on. Good excursion not to be missed. Museum was very interesting.

Battery Park area is very safe for walking and bicycling. From the point at the end you can see the Statue of Liberty and Governor's Island. Walk along the Hudson River and watch the boats. There are restaurants and cafes. The World Trade Center Memorial is an easy walk from there.

Amazing view, great place to spend time with kids and family. Kids have plenty of space to run around. You can take the Staten Island Ferry or the Statue of Liberty ferry from here. It is close to public transport hence good for tourists. The only negative is the crowd, it’s way too crowded that you miss the beauty of the place.

Our issues was maybe we were blind, or just tired...but we couldn't figure out for get on the Staten island ferry. We could only figure out how to get on the pay services. We decided to embark on a cruise to liberty island statue. A few 'gentlemen' tried to 'offer' their help claiming they are doing us a favor to buy tickets to the cruise. DO NOT be naive, there are official tickets at the launch site that cost you less and are managed by the government. You will thank me later.

I first visited 42 yrs ago and there were no gardens or green areas as now. The gardens are beautiful, plus there is an educational vegetable garden now.

This is the place we waited before getting on the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis island. It is quite small but full of beautiful tulips and has an amazing view across the water. There is a nice restaurant called ‘the view’ in this park, and lots of food places in the area.

Can see the statue of liberty from here. Nice fountain and memorial to military service members. When I went, there were a few artists who could draw a caricature on the spot. A bit touristy, but not a trap in the way that Times Square can be. Would recommend as a place to visit.

I love Battery Park. As a native new yorker, I'm always amazed when I go there and realize it's historical significance. In addition to the growth of NYC and expansion of America, as the main harbor for trade, the pivotal role it played during The Revolutionary War.

Beautiful park. Worth seeing. Traveling with friends and the husband is retired military. The memorial was beautiful. Security to get through to the ferry was good as well, they accommodated my friend's mobility scooter with ease. Hot dog vendor was good too!
