I arrived here where I was looking for some healthy lunch. I normally purchase sushi from the known franchise however I decided since I was passing the area, I might have a try. When ordering, there really was not much as prepacked sushi however they had this $15.80 set so I decided to purchase it and I also checked in at one of the tables. I received some Japanese tea which was the first in a very long time. The tea was very refreshing and I liked it quite a bit. The tray of sushi came in and for $15.80 it was a huge amount... really it is enough for two people. That is bloody value for money and the taste was way far better than the packaged I normally purchase from the franchised version. The wasabi is not the fake version and there is a distinct taste between the fake and real wasabi. There was plenty of wasabi and plenty of pickled ginger that I cannot fault the food at all. Yes it is a very small shop so maybe better for takeaway however you will be very please with the outcome. This to me is a rarity to provide a 5-star because they went beyond the regular service and provided something that had taste.

Generous servings of food and cheap but lacking in taste and flavour. Sashimi platter - sashimi cut way too thick - about 1cm thick. Agadashi tofu - soggy and lacking in flavour. Sauce tastes like water. Salmon platter - same issue with sashimi thickness. Rice on the nigiri and sushi roll was very dry. Takoyaki balls - these tasted fine but only had one tiny piece of octopus in it - I think these may have come frozen from a packet. We asked for udon with karaage chicken for the kids and the restaurant was very accomodating. The kids said the chicken was dry unfortunately. Service was very good - it’s a shame the food wasn’t.

Saw the reviews and was looking for something new to try. Was pretty disappointed by the food and service. It took a very long time for the food to come out, main dishes also came out at staggered timings so the first person had almost finished by the time the last person got theirs. I ordered the katsu don and the taste was pretty bland, the rice itself was just plain steam rice without much broth and the chicken was a bit tough. The agedashi tofu was a bit meh, and the takoyaki tasted like it was probably commercial store bought then reheated.

Quite disappointed, I ordered a bowl of seafood udon soup, specifically asked for no squid/calamari. Order arrived, squid/calamari in the bowl. I asked for no squid/calamari due to I'm allergic to squid/calamari, the waitress/kitchen helper clearly no clue what is a calamari. She didn't even write it down no squid on the order. I've been to other places which sells seafood soup and when I asked no calamari, it was written on there. Better education I think for the staff. My husband wasn't too pleased either with his tempura, quite oily.

If you want great fresh Japanese food, friendly staff, very reasonably priced and a nice and neat place to eat then this is the place for you. From entry you’re welcomed by the broad and friendly smiles of the staff and chefs, the selection is not too big nor too small. You can grab small take away items such as nigiris and hand rolls or eat in for some delicious meals inclusive of bento boxes. I had the salmon bento box and it was Devine!!! Certainly will come back here when on the Burwood highway and passing through. ありがとうございました

The food was as terrible as the service. With only 8 people in the restaurant my takeaway order still took over an hour to make. After telling me it would only be 5 minutes they proceeded to make me wait 45 mins. The customers dining in were clearly unhappy with the food and service too, as one of them even mentioned to me outside as I left. The seafood udon soup was plain warm water with inedible seafood, the takoyaki and other dishes were all cold WOULD NOT RECCOMEND!

Food is delicious and very reasonably priced, with most meals costing $10 - $14. All are good sized serves. Last visit I had the Soft Shell Crab Ramen ($13.80) which takes a little longer to prepare than some of the other menu options but is well worth the wait. The restaurant is quite small, like a lot of the places in Japan, but the quality is terrific. Will be returning again very soon, highly recommended!

Very friendly staff. Been there with my wife last week. They gave free pot of tea on arrival which was pleasant. Ordered Salmon Bento and Beef Bento Box. Probably one of the best Japanese food places I have ever been to. You could literally see the freshness of the ingredients. Finger licking Salmon, succulent beef, fresh garden salads, amazing sushi. Big portions, affordable price, and delicious food. Definitely coming back again

Had a salmon don, Uchiwa roll and wagyu bento. If you are after remotely authentic Japanese food, please go elsewhere. Words cannot express the frustration and trauma of having to eat a sushi roll or chirashi don made with normal white rice. This seem like a neighborhood joint for fast convenient Asian food, NOT real Japanese food… I feel so ripped off. Please save yourself the hassle and go elsewhere if you want a Japanese fix.

Ordered the chicken karaage for takeaway and my initial thought was that the serving size could of been a little bit more. Looking on the positive side it does come with soup. The food was good however I found it hard to see the value. Will dine in next time and order something else to see if the experience is different.

My preferred takeaway is outside my 5km zone. So I thought I'd give Uchiwa a go as I was quite desperate for a Japanese-food-fix. Prices are very reasonable, but you get what you pay for. The rice was cold and hard; the tonkatsu was dry and tough; the niku beef was tough as well. Takoyaki was OK. I'd probably hold off until restrictions ease for my next attempt to get Japanese food.

Both a customer and do ubereats pick up for them. Personally I like it, one for their hospitality, the other being reasonably priced for it's quality. I have tried many food on the menu and although I won't say I like them all. The ones I do like are what makes me come back again and again. Nice small shop and chilled. Sadly I'm moving away from Vermont South soon so will miss it

prices are cheap but this was hands down the most flavourless japanese food i’ve ever had. i got the ramen and it was more bland than cheap 2 minute noodles. the broth, the most important part of any ramen was a joke. tasted like literal dish water. disappointed. the most flavourful thing in that bowl was the egg.

Good Atmosphere. Budget Japanese in the suburbs can be a hit and miss but i would come back here again to try other dishes. Very well priced. I eat the Wagu Beef Ramen and Gyoza Bento box. Ramen broth ok, Could use more flavour but beef very dry and tough to eat. Otherwise would have been great. The bento box i think was fine and Miso soup was excellent.

The food at Uchiwa was amazing! The japanese curry was out of this world, I’ve had a lot of Japanese food and this is actually in my top 3 best food. Really well priced, the portion sizes are good and the flavor has a lot of love. We were even discussing to buy take-away after our lunch so we could eat again for dinner haha Couldn’t recommend more! ☝

Asked for a little bit of extra teriyaki sauce and this is what they gave. Not sure if they were trynna make a bowl or teriyaki soup or were just trying to mess around with me. Genuinely believe whoever did this has problem Will never order from this place ever again and I sincerely recommend any of you contemplating on going to this place to move on.

Finally, Good food is in town, yes right here, Although the shop is considered small, but that's not my concern, What is important to me is the restaurant is very welcoming, the lady at the front desk is friendly and always smiling, foods are delicious with Free Hot Tea, and the price is reasonable. Overall this is a great place to have a quick lunch.

Our second visit to Uchiwa while down in Melbourne; we so enjoyed the Japanese food from our first trip (while in Wantirna) we came again. Food is excellent, came in a timely manner, service polite and friendly. Having been to Japan 3 times in the last decade and really loving their cuisine we have not been disappointed with Uchiwa.

Great food. Full of flavour and consistently good. I have been coming here since it's opening and have always walked away feeling very satisfied and full for a good price. The staff are really friendly and are able to tweek things for dietary requirements. Would highly recommend. Good vegetarian/vegan options are also available.

Poor service, poor atmosphere, a long wait to sit down and an even longer wait to receive food. Only one worker going around doing stuff while the other one with glasses sat down the entire time doing nothing. Small things like these are pretty noticeable after sitting there for 30 minutes waiting for food.

Unfortunately no chef or cook working there. The noodles were cooked to a powder, and the Gyoza were too sticky to pickup. Service was excellent, I wish them well

We were in the area on a rainy Saturday afternoon, and needed to grab a quick bite for lunch. We walked in only to be surprised. We had chicken Katsu Don, Beef Steak, and Grilled Salmon Bento. We left pleased but at the same time wanting more... Table/Customer service was also good!

I ordered the tonkatsu bento set. The portion is a lot and quite nice except the sashimi sushi rice was too sour. My colleague ordered the teriyaki udon but was too salty. The tea was not nice as I thought they should served green tea instead of ceylon tea. Nice service though.

The food was OK. Nothing wrong per se but just adequate. The unagi piece which came in my bento box was laughably small (see photo). Like 1 mouthful of eel on a giant pillow of rice. Also the table water had floaties.

Fantastic place. Stylish tableware that isn't cheap plastic but good ceramics. I love their teapots and cups. Prices are excellent and portion sizes are very satisfying. Food there tastes great with effort put into presentation. Would definitely eat there again.

40 min wait. Asked for squid then after 20 min they say we ran out and ask me to chose Something else so i choose the beef. AND THEY MAKE ME PAY THE EXTRA $1. Great customer service.. not coming back

We were pleasantly surprised when we tried this small Japanese cafe. The staff were lovely and helpful and the food was very tasty, reasonably priced and good serves. Can recommend for a casual dinner when you feel like Japanese flavours.

I was looking for takeaway sushi around 9 in the evening and this shop kindly made up fresh rolls for me even though it was late ... great price and quality and will try again next time in the area.

Excellent, high quality dishes and very reasonably priced. I ordered the teriyaki beef don which was excellent. The staff are lovely and friendly. Will be returning soon to try more from the menu.

Food was surprisingly good especially the takoyaki balls, I've had them when I was in Japan but these were better. I will definitely come back only downside is the place has limited seating.

Not good at all as I found bone in my salmon sashimi which was totally unacceptable. Tried to let them know but the reply was "Is that okay" and then stopped and nothing was acted.

Unfortunately, my experience at this place was unpleasant. Smell and noise of the kitchen was overwhelming. Food made my whole family sick: too much oil, huge tasteless portions.

Fantastic food that is delicious and affordable. The staff are lovely, friendly and welcoming. My whole family love Uchiwa, and I would strongly recommend Uchiwa to anyone.
